Join the Russia Knitting/Crocheting

orphans. Bring a project, or we will help
you start one. Yarn is provided. We have
some needles, but if you have any,
please bring size 7-11; or bring a crochet
hook. Beginners are welcome as are
those who want to join us for snacks and

The Food Bank of Central and Eastern
North Carolina seeks to meet the
nutritional needs of children at risk of
hunger during the summer. Some of the
highly requested items are: canned
meat/pasta, canned fruit/fruit cups,
sugar-free pudding cups, 100% fruit
juice boxes, individual cereal boxes.
Pop-top items or microwave cups are
preferred; no glass please. Place items
in the crates in the Connector.
Something big came from this little town,
and Bethlehem is on the itinerary
proposed for the trip to the Holy Land in
mid to late March 2014. Estimated cost is
$5000 per person, and an initial deposit
of $500 will be due no later than

Ramadan Dinner
Our Turkish friends have extended an
invitation to an Iftar dinner at Institute of
Islamic and Turkish Studies (1393 SE
Maynard Road, Cary). Iftar is an
evening meal when Muslims break their
fast during Ramadan. Come on July 17
or July 25 (choose one night). Dinner
will start between 8:15 and 8:30 p.m.
Ten White Memorial members can be
hosted each night. Organize a carpool
and take a group to dinner. Guests
should arrive at 7:45 p.m. for a tour and

Vacation Church School Thank You
Love the Lord your God...and love your neighbor as yourself.

At Vacation Church School’s Everywhere Fun Fair, 230 children
experienced the love of Jesus as they discovered what being a good
neighbor is all about. With the help of Godwin Merrifeather, our
friendly VCS bird (shown right), they learned that neighbors are
friendly, giving, bold, forgiving and welcoming. Our VCS
neighbors met friends from the Bible and learned about neighbors
from Japan, Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom, Australia and Mexico.
Each day they encountered ways to love and serve God and to be a
neighbor to the world. Through games, music, storytelling, crafts,
snacks and fellowship, VCS children experienced God’s world
coming together.
During our morning assemblies, children, youth and adults gathered to celebrate the gift of faith
through scripture, storytelling and song. Fourth and fifth graders were worship leaders on Friday
and participated in a lively Bottle Choir as we raised our voices in celebration of our week together. Our fourth and fifth graders also
served our neighbors by sharing the music of Everywhere Fun Fair with Morningside residents on Friday. Our entire church family
reached out to our neighbors by loading the Diaper Train at Saint Saviour’s Center with 4,146 diapers, 8,813 wipes, and 351 used
children’s books. Our curriculum will be reused by our neighbor churches in the New Hope Presbytery.
We are grateful for the 158 adults and 61 youth who helped make our VCS Everywhere Fun Fair a wonderful celebration of our
shared faith.

Rising Ninth Grade Mountains to the Coast Mission Trip
16th ANNIVERSARY!
Started by Tom Watkins, a previous White Memorial Presbyterian Church youth pastor, in 1997, the tradition of the Mountains
to Coast Mission Trip has continued now for 16 years! Carrying the torch this year are 18 youth and six adults who will travel
across the state from Montreat to Myrtle Grove, stopping along the way to participate in mission work and play.

We are days away from our second ASP trip of the summer! Twenty youth and eight adult volunteers will
travel to Dickenson County, VA. We will stay overnight at Sandlick Elementary School, work in and
around the city of Birchleaf, Virginia, helping with anything from repairing ramps to digging ditches to
rebuilding parts of houses. The work will make a radical difference with warmer, safer and drier homes.

Have you ever realized how sometimes the very simplest things seem to be the hardest? Like needing a ride to the
doctor or a chemo treatment? Wishing you didn’t have to figure out supper because you are in the middle of a “hard
time” with a sick child? Needing someone to pick up items from the store because your aging parent no longer drives
and your work load is overwhelming? Simple things that have become burdensome.
Yet, on the flip side, you realize you would be happy to volunteer for a simple task, no long-term deal. With a little
bit of planning in your day, you would like to do a simple kindness. You want to connect and give back.
Martha Ministry is just that sort of ministry — one you can reach out to for a bit of help or to find an opportunity to
“give back” a bit of your time.
