Introducing a New Face at The Project: Steven Hrubes
S
teven Hrubes has taken over the position of Community Outreach Coordinator at the Yellowstone
AIDS Project. Hrubes joined the team officially at
the beginning of September, filling the shoes of Allison Corbyn.
Born and raised in Montana, he grew up on a farm just
outside of Miles City. He moved to Billings to study Public
Relations and Marketing at Montana State University
Billings. Hrubes was helping manage a local coffee shop
downtown when the job opportunity arose. He jumped at
the chance for many reasons.
“I was ecstatic when I got the phone call saying I had got
the job,” said Hrubes. “This organization hits close to home
as my brother lost his life to HIV/AIDS. I have been looking
for any chance to get involved with a cause such as this but
always seemed to be lacking the time. Now I get to do it
every day, and it’s been fantastic.”
Hrubes was chosen out of 6 applicants, all from varying
backgrounds and had to go through intensive interviews,
including one where a member of the board, previous Community Outreach Coordinator, Corbyn, and current Executive Director Morgan Ditto were present. Ditto believes
selecting Steven is also looking forward.
“Upon first meeting Steven, he is a person that we wanted
to get to know more. A person that people everywhere
should get to know,” said
Ditto. “Besides having
the necessary experience, he has a dynamic
presence. What he
brings to the table fits
where the Yellowstone
AIDS Project is going.”
Hrubes is no stranger
to the Billings community and you may recognize him walking down
the street as he has made
a name for himself by
doing performing arts in
Billings.
“When I got to Billings
I became heavily involved in the theatre and performing community and I love it. I am
able to use my abilities to perform and dance and make people
smile when I get on stage. It’s a great feeling,” Hrubes said.
He is also looking forward to his future at YAP.
“I am taking it day by day and learning, but its truly a blessing to
be working for this organization and with the amazing people here.
I know we will accomplish some great things.”
“
QUOTE OF THE QUARTER
”
We condemn attempts to label us as “victim”, which implies
defeat, and we are only occasionally “patients”,
which implies passivity, and dependence upon the care of
others. We are “people with AIDS.”
