Optimism is high and we are off to a flying start this year after two productive board
meetings and a beautiful awards banquet at
the Lexington Country Club. We all benefit
from the experience and wisdom of our existing board members and the enthusiasm of our
new ones. I want to thank all of them for their
service and dedication.
KDA committees and volunteers have numerous clinics, shows, and activities planned
for our membership in 2016 and they can’t be
accomplished without everyone’s help. Volunteers will find a new page in the Impulsion
dedicated to keeping track of volunteer hours,
rules, and potential volunteer opportunities.
For those volunteers needing to brush up on
scribing, bit checking, ring stewarding, or
scoring, you won’t want to miss our upcoming
clinic on March 12 at the Secretariat Center.
Our second clinic of the year begins with
an Angela Jackson youth clinic scheduled for
April 16-17 at Timbach Farm in Corydon,
IN. Show season brings back the May 27-29
Spring Warm Up and 30th Annual KDA Show
at the Kentucky Horse Park in May followed
by a Susan BeeBee Clinic at Morris Farm in
Lexington on June 11-12. The following weekend Gwen Poulin heads to Spring Run Farm
for yet another clinic.
The new KDA Summer Classic I & II
debuts July 8-10 at the Kentucky Horse Park
along with the National Dressage Pony Cup
shows. During the same weekend at the Park,
July 9-10, the KDA Breed Shows I & II and our
adorable smaller friends, the National Dressage
Pony Cup Breed Shows, will be offered simultaneously, for the first time ever. Our education
committee will provide a Caroline Roffman
clinic on July 23-24, location TBD.
August 7 marks our schooling show at
Masterson Station Park. Be on the lookout
for new children’s 4H classes at several of
our shows and tell friends about gaited and
Western dressage classes offered at both of our
schooling shows. A third breed show qualifier
and KDA’s first ever Great American Insurance
Group/USDF North Central Series Finals will
be held at Lakeside Arena on September 17-18.
Details on all of these events can be found on
our website www.kentuckydressageassociation.com.
As you can see, there is a serious effort
to serve our membership, and the calendar
is chock full of shows and clinics this year.
Remember that it takes a village to plan, host,
and implement the programs we offer and we
need YOU to help maintain the quality of our
shows and clinics through volunteering. Please
do not hesitate to share with us whatever talent
you might have, no experience necessary.
Inside this issue of the Impulsion you
will find lovely photographs from our annual awards banquet. Thank you to member
photographer Lisa Dean. Congratulations to
all who took home one of the beautiful awards
designed by Julie Cook, and congratulations
to our new scholarship recipients and special
award winners. I’ll leave you with a quote for
this issue of the Impulsion.
“An optimist is the human personification
of spring.”
Best Wishes,
Cindy

Dressage is all about precision, perfection
and determination. To be your best you spend
countless hours making sure you have enough
bend in your shoulder-in, enough push in your
lengthening. There is always something you
can improve, something you can tweak. It is so
easy to take your test from the last show and
drill everything from the judges’ comments
until you get it perfect.
I found myself in this place last year. I
knew my horse could do it and he drove me
crazy because that terrible T word was always
in my way.
That’s right: tension, the word that gets
us all at some point. In my case tension got
in my way of having a supple horse who was
happy to go to work. I used my scholarship
for extra lessons with my instructor to try and
get through all of this tension. It was the end
of the summer of 2014 that I started to think
how things needed to change. By the end of
the year the tension had progressed to some
serious teeth grinding and lack of forwardness.
We both hated going to work as it meant a
fight. Out of pure frustration and a lack of an
indoor we ended up taking the winter off from
any real riding. Instead I kind of ignored him
for the most part and would free lunge him in
the covered round pen once and while.
When we came back to work in the spring
I knew something had to change. I ended up
completely changing our weekly routine; no
more drilling, no more pressure.
I ended up deciding that while I loved
my instructor my horse did not. My current
instructor was recommended by a friend as
someone who is good with the more sensitive
horses.
I spent another year at third level so we
could try and get back to basics. I spent more
of the ride making sure he was in front of my
leg and straight and tried very hard not to
nag him. I changed how I warmed up and my
expectations. While we didn’t have any crazy
amazing scores we came out of last season
better then we went in. He was happy to work,
I was more forgiving of our mistakes and we
were working better as a team. This year I
gave him two months of just hacking around
fields a couple times a week before I moved
him to an indoor to get back to work. He was
so happy, working was fun, he was forward, he
was soft and most importantly we are a team
again. When he says “it is hard” I can say “you
can do it; I promise” and he tries. I am making
a big deal about when he does it right and he
tries harder because of it.
There will still be times when he gets me
mad and I forget to play nice, but I will do my
best to be a fair teacher as we both learn new
things in our quest to master PSG!

3rd Annual Kentucky Dressage Association Youth Clinic
with Angela Jackson
Timbach Farm, Corydon, IN
April 16-17, 2016
The KDA Education Team is very excited to announce our 3rd Annual Youth Clinic, to be hosted by KC Dunn
at her Timbach Farm. Featuring KDA’s own Angela Jackson, youth and horses of all levels for a fun and
exciting weekend of lessons.
About Angela: Angela Jackson is the owner and head trainer of
Rhine River Farm in Henderson, Kentucky.
A successful show jumper in her native Germany, Angela won the Gold
Medal Riding Award in Jumping, the silver medal at the German Young
Rider Championships, and Equitation over Fences with a score of 9.5 which
was held at the Volvo World Cup Qualifier in Dortmund. She has also
competed at many international shows throughout Europe, from CSIs to
CSIOs, with a second place win at the CSI Aachen Indoor Show, jumping 6'6" ( 2.10 m.) in the puissance.
After immigrating to the United States, Angela focused on dressage, showing at FEI level at international
dressage competitions. Those competitions included CDI’s at Global Dressage, Wellington,, FL, Festival of
Champions, Gladstone and multiple other Regional Championship Titles. In addition, she has competed
at the USEF/Markel Young Horse Championships for the last 15 years in every Division 4,5,6, Dev. PSG
and Dev. GP. Most notably she claimed 3 National Champion Titles at the same US Dressage Finals.
Angela has been training young horses out of the family breeding operation for over 20 years. Their
breeding program has produced numerous Grand Prix horses in both dressage and jumping.

TDF AWARDED OVER $53,000 TO DRESSAGE GROUPS IN 2015
FOR EDUCATIONAL EVENTS
Thanks to the support of many generous donors throughout the years, significant
and meaningful financial support has been provided to non-profit dressage
organizations from The Dressage Foundation’s Grant Funds.
In 2015, over $53,000 was awarded to groups from Maine to Hawaii and Alaska to Florida.
Over 1,000 individuals participated in events that included educational symposia and seminars,
musical freestyle clinics, dressage camps, the USDF Instructor Certification Program, and so
much more.
A member of a USDF Group Member Organization (GMO) in Virginia shared, “As an organizer
for this year’s adult dressage camp, I realized how crucial your grants are to us. They allow us
to keep the camper fee reasonable, allowing more people to participate. Thank you so much for
your support!”
“Because of this clinic, I realized that riding a musical freestyle was definitely within my skill set,”
said a rider from Kansas. “The Dressage Foundation and the Dancing Horse Fund definitely
provide a much needed helping hand to riders everywhere.”
Grants are available for USDF Group Member Organizations and other nonprofit equestrian
clubs from several different Grant Funds:
Violet Hopkins Fund – For USDF GMOs to host a variety of educational events, such as
camps, symposia, and seminars for riders at all levels.
Dancing Horse Fund – For nonprofit groups to hold musical freestyle clinics and seminars or to
purchase sound systems to use for freestyle events.
Continuing Education for Dressage Instructors Fund – For nonprofit groups hosting USDF’s
Instructor Certification Program.
Sally Swift Fund – For nonprofit groups to organize a Centered Riding® clinic.
Edgar Hotz Judges Fund – Provides support to USDF GMOs for the “Continuing Education for
Judges and L Program Graduates” program.
Michael Poulin Dressage Fund – For nonprofit groups or individuals to host an event that will
