An Introduction to
Protexin Research
and mode of action can vary. Therefore,
preventing genetic shift will mean that
the benefits of the Protexin strains will
not change. It is for this reason that when
taking a probiotic, it is essential that it is
identified to strain level, produced
to the highest quality, and backed by
good science.
Protexin’s Research
One of the key areas of investment for
Protexin is research. A large, diverse
programme is in place across all divisions,
covering new product development,
as well as new clinical evidence for
existing products.
Probiotics International Ltd (Protexin) introduced their first probiotic product
on the market over 22 years ago. Back then the term ‘probiotic’ was not as
well-known as it is today, but as the evidence of probiotic benefits grew, so
did the knowledge and the number of products on the market. This evidence
is still growing at a rapid rate, and as an example, a simple PubMed search for
published trials using the search word ‘probiotic’ brings over 12,700 articles,
whereas a similar search just 5 years ago returned less than half this number.
About Protexin
The Protexin Strains
Protexin products are sold to over 80
countries worldwide and manufacturing
is at their purpose built facility in
Somerset, South-West England. Quality
is of paramount importance, with a
dedicated quality department and
accreditations including cGMP (audited
by the MHRA) and ISO 9001:2008.
All of the Protexin strains are lodged at a
leading culture collection bank known as
the National Collection of Industrial, food
& Marine Bacteria (NCIMB). This allows
safe storage as well as a library to ensure
no genetic shift of the strains.
This is important as there are many
different strains of the same species, but
as research has shown, their efficacy
Janine Barlow, Technical & Product
Development Manager at Protexin explains
the process; ‘At Protexin, we have a
philosophy of producing innovative,
research-based products to the highest
standards for both human and animals.
Our product development can take a
long time, and once a new product is
launched into the market, the research
does not stop there. We are committed
to an extensive research programme that
includes supporting products already on
the market as well as developing new
products. For example, on the healthcare
side, we are commissioning four new
clinical trials on existing products over the
next 12 months, and this is in addition
to more than 15 clinical trials already
completed with Protexin products.’

Janine continues, ‘our commitment to
new product development research is
large too, with projects both on the
human and veterinary side that will
keep us at the forefront of producing
innovative, research-based new products.’
The product development at Protexin
includes more than just clinical trials – preclinical work such as proof of concept,
survivability and shelf life stability are to
name just a few stages of this process.
The Research Team
With more than 100 people employed
across the company, our knowledgeable
and committed research and product
development team has grown in all
divisions. On the healthcare side is Head
of Research Peter Cartwright, who has a
wealth of microbiota knowledge, Medical
Advisor Dr Mayur R Joshi and Technical
Advisor Natalie Lamb. On the Veterinary
side, there is Veterinary Technical
Manager, James Kyffin and Veterinary
Research Manager, Lindsay Rose. Lindsay
explains ‘the depth of research here
at Protexin is paramount to producing
products that optimise animal health. It is
an exciting time with new research results
being released this year and more trials
currently under way.’
Protexin works with various leading
organisations across the world on
research projects, including universities,
clinical research organisations and
hospitals. Janine explains ‘it is the variety
of organisations that we have links with
and our in-house knowledge which
enables us to produce high standard
research on scientific formulas alongside
world-leading experts’.
