COME UNTO ME
J
esus said come
unto me all ye that
are heavy laden and
I will give you rest
(Matt. 11:28).
We are living in a
burdensome and stressful world that will
squeeze every ounce of spiritual, physical,
mental and emotional energy from us. This text
is therefore applicable to everyone to come to
Jesus because without Him there is no true rest.
We need to go to Jesus when we are burdened
with sin and guilt to be free by the power of His
blood. Only Jesus can give us the victory over
sin so that there can be peace within. When
Jesus said, “Come unto me,” He is fully aware
of our condition, that our souls are in need of
urgent attention. Jesus is inviting us to His
emergency operating room because if He does
not attend to us, we will die. There is a favorite
song of mine that says, “Jesus is the answer for
the world today above Him there is no answer
Jesus is the way.” In Desire of Ages Chapter 1,
Ellen White wrote, “By coming to dwell with
us, Jesus was to reveal God both to men and to
angels. He was the Word of God, God’s
thought made audible”. When Jesus said come
unto me, this was a call to the Father, Son and
the Holy Spirit, all Three working in unison for
the salvation of humanity. We can only receive
true rest when we heed the call to come unto
Jesus, however, we cannot come unless God
gives us the power to open the door of our
hearts to begin that process of salvation. In
steps to Christ Chapter 1, Ellen G. White says,
“It was to redeem us that Jesus lived and
suffered and died. He became ‘a Man of
Sorrows,’ that we might be made partakers of
everlasting joy. God permitted His beloved
Son, full of grace and truth, to come from a
world of indescribable glory, to a world marred
and blighted with sin, darkened with the
shadow of death and curse. He permitted Him
to leave the bosom of His love, the adoration of
the angels, to suffer shame, insult, humiliation,
hatred, and death. Jesus does not give rest to all
the heavy laden, but to those of them who show
their want of relief by coming to Him.”
Ed Barnes, in his message, describes those who
labored and were heavy laden: They were any
and all who had been struggling in an effort to
find the truth. They had discovered, however,
that the task was impossible and they had been
driven to weariness and despair in their vain
search. They were exhausted with the search for
truth. This group would have included the
Greeks of Christ’s day who believed it was very
difficult to find God and then impossible to tell
anyone else about him. It would have included
the Jews, whose religion was a thing of burdens
(Matt.23:4) and endless rules. The Law, it
seems, was to them a forest of regulations
dictating every action of a person’s life to the
point where one was always listening for a
voice which said, “Thou Shalt Not.” During the
time of Christ, the Pharisees burdened the
multitudes by loading them down with
whatever they saw as necessary for obedience
(Matt 23:1-4, 23), and then, adding insult to
injury, confused and exasperated the multitudes
as they themselves lived up to the much easier
standard of saying but not doing.
Finally, the burden of seeking for the true
source of rest, peace and salvation has been
lifted because we have found the Messiah. He
declares to Thomas: “I am the way, the truth,
and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me” (John 14:6). Today, I heed the call
to go to Jesus, my burden bearer, my problem
solver, my healer, my deliverer, and my all!
Will you join me today? -Pastor Mark Ewen,
Grant’s Town Seventh-day Adventist Church
