Palumbo students achieve Mission Impossible and Win Attendance Challenge
Close to 700 Philadelphia students from the Academy at Palumbo were treated to a premiere preview
screening of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol after they won the title of East Regional Winner of
the Get Schooled Foundation’s Fall 2011 Attendance Challenge. Prior seeing the film at the U.A. Theater, the Academy students walked the red carpet that Paramount Pictures had rolled out for them and
discussed why increasing their attendance was so important to them.

Year End Review, 2011

It’s been a tradition of
mine for at least the last
twenty years, to write a
Year-End Review column for the SCOOP
USA where I am very
proud to remain a member of the family. Normally when I write this
column I have asked the
question on the radio,
“what were some of the
top local news stories of
the year.” It was always
a very lively show and many people would call in
and remind some of us, of news stories that had
occurred in Philadelphia in a 12 month time frame
that we forgot about. This year, since I am not
currently on the radio, I guess I’ll have to do all the work
myself, trying to remember all the many big news stories
of 2011. On the other hand, I think I can give some credit
to the CBS 3 web site which I perused just a little, to help
me remember some of the major national and or international news stories for the year 2011. I can call that “research” and give the credit to CBS-3. I also give credit to
my husband, Minister Darryl Milling for his great memory and assisting me with my Year-End Review for the
SCOOP U.S.A.
The year really was off to a hurtful start when Arizona
Congresswoman Gabby Gifford on January 8, 2011, became the victim of what appeared to be an insane constituent who fired on her and several other people and put
the Congresswoman down for many months and to this
day she’s still not totally recovered or able to work in her
Congressional office. On January 14, 2011 widespread
discontent that had been boiling since December of 2010,
boiled over January 14th in Tunisia. They had a major
revolution claim victory for the people that ultimately
ousted longtime President Zine El Abidne Ben Ali. The
movement began the Arab Springs protests that took place
across the Middle East. January 18, 2011, Pennsylvania
got a new Governor, Republican Tom Corbett. Meanwhile
out in California, Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of
killing of Michael Jackson this year. There was more
Flash Mob craziness in 2011 and Mayor Nutter initiated a
newer, tougher curfew law. North Korean President dead.
Osama Bin Laden killed. War in Iraq over. Other top Al
Quida leaders dead in 2011.
Meanwhile back here in good old Philadelphia, by February 7, 2011, people who love both former Governor Ed
Rendell and Judge Midge Rendell were saddened to hear
that the married couple of more than two decades were
going “Splitsville” after so many years of marriage. However, through an email sent to friends and close associates
the Rendells’ did in fact announce they were divorcing.

February 11th on the national news front, Egyptian President Hosni Mubrak was forced to resign after 30 years in
power. He too was forced to hand over power to the
Egyptian Military. On March 5, 2011 Nate Dogg, born
Nathaniel Hale passed. He became known as one of the
smoothest R&B and Rap vocalists of his generation. He
died at age 41 after two strokes. March 23rd Elizabeth
Taylor died. She was known as one of the most beautiful
women who ever lived and certainly one of the most
beautiful actresses in Hollywood for many years. A long
time close friend of Michael Jackson, Liz Taylor was also
known in her later years for her crusade to educate about
HIV/AIDS after another one of her longtime friends,
famed actor Rock Hudson passed from AIDS years ago.
On May 1st of this year, our President, Barack Obama
and our U.S. Navy Seals showed the world that America
is not to be toyed with when they killed Osama Bin
Laden.
Osama Bin Laden is believed to have been the one ultimately responsible for the 911 attacks on our nation. He
was 57 when killed earlier this year. June 12th Clarence
Clemons passed away. He was best known as the sax
player for Bruce Springsteen. He had a massive stroke at
age 69.
After a 30 year time span, the Nasa Space Shuttle program closed on July 21, 2011. August 3rd, Buba Smith,
Hall of Fame Football player for the Baltimore Colts,
Oakland Raiders and the Houston Oilers passed of acute
drug intoxication and heart disease. He was 66. August
23, 2011 the earth shook, right under my feet, and not
only mine, but for many around the Delaware Valley we
did in fact feel a 5.9 magnitude earthquake right here in
Philly, New Jersey and Delaware. Everybody may not
have felt it, but it definitely happened. August 27th Hurricane Irene hit the East Coast and had a nine day life, damaging homes and businesses, shorelines and more as it
ripped its way up the east Coast form Florida and South
Carolina to New Jersey and Pennsylvania and on to
Canada. What a storm.
Nick Ashford of the famous Ashford and Simpson
singing duo, passed away of throat cancer Monday, August 29, 2011. I never had a chance to interview or be in
the same room with Steve Jobs, the Founder of the Apple
Computer Company, but he seems to have truly been a
cool dude who when he became rich, did not forget the
poor and disadvantaged. In his lifetime he gave away millions and millions of dollars to people in need, plus he
was a darn genius. Quite an extraordinary gentleman who
died October 5, 2001. On October 20, 2011, a person
whom some describe as eccentric”, Muammar Qaddafi
was killed. He rose to power in the late 1960’s and ruled
Libya until Libyan rebels overthrew his government this
year. One day later, October 21, 2011, President Barack
Obama announced that all U.S. Troops would be withdrawn from Iraq before the end of the year and he has
kept his word on that. Three cheers for President Obama!
Penn State. Oh beloved Penn State. Do you understand
that to some people in this keystone state of ours, that
Penn State and Football are the next best thing to God,
Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost? So when on November
4, 2011 the Penn State Football scandal, dirty little secret
blew up and all the dirty laundry hit news world-wide, oh
how very hurtful number one, it was and is, to all the victims, all the little boys, who allegedly were essentially
molested and or raped by this person, Gerald, (Jerry Sandunsky), former assistant head Coach of the Penn State
Nittany Lions, under the infamous Joe (Joe Pa) Paterno,
who was forced into sudden retirement over this child sex
scandal that sure is looking very much like it’s real, it
happened and it even looks like major cover-ups that
could reach Governor Corbett’s desk, went down. Nobody’s talking about it, but Governor Corbett was on the
Board of Directors when this scandal first came to light
years ago and it appears and or is alleged that none of the
board members of Penn state did a darn thing but sit on
their butts and sweep the dirty laundry under the rug. Is
football really that important. Are you serious Penn State
Officials? Are you serious? On November 7, 2011, World
Boxing Champion, Smokin’ Joe Frazier passed away of
liver cancer. Thousands and thousand came out to pay last
respects to Joe Frazier. While born in South Carolina,
Philadelphia equally claimed him as our hometown hero.
He was a great man who loved the Lord, loved his family
and embraced life. You gotta love him for that as well as
for his boxing acumen. Rap Icon Heavy “D” succumbed
to a heart attack just days after Joe Frazier passed and in
fact, one local radio station, 100.3, WRNB/FM hosted a
live broadcast from Philly International records, paying
tribute to both Joe Frazier and Heavy D on the same day.
Lady B was the Jock on duty throwing her thing down.
Occupy Wall Street kicked-off September 17th and
soon after right at City Hall we had Occupy Philly, polluting Center City like it needs any more stench in the
mix. Well, the occupiers go their 15 minutes of fame and
its share of media attention in 2011, but at the end of the
day, were there any real results? During the November
2011 General Elections here in Philadelphia, rising political star, State Representative Kenyatta Johnson won the
second district city council seat vacated by longtime powerhouse Council President Anna C. Verna. This is very
significant because this will be the first time that an
African American has ever had that seat in a district
where millions of dollars in redevelopment and other land
issues, old school meets new school politics, traditional
South Philly is still geared up and ready at any time for a
dance ort a fight, and so much more. Read between the
lines. Kenyatta do well and continue to make us all proud.
Meanwhile, someone whom I secretly to myself referred
to as “The Grinch” of City Hall for many years was
ousted in the November General Elections and that was
the reigning longtime Queen of the City Commissioners,
Marge Tartaglione. When you start to act like you own a
political office, it’s yours as if it’s a birthright or something it is time to go and the people spoke in November of
this year, so Tartaglione should be just about finished
packing by the time the ink is dry on this week’s SCOOP
Newspaper. December 18, 2011 Kim Jong II, long time
leader of North Korea died of a heart attack. Now his son,
who is 23, will take over leadership of Communist North
Korea and everyone around the world is waiting to see
how that works out. It’s said that the young Jong has no
military training and no leadership training. Things that

Christmas Party for needy
area children on Wednesday, December 14th. Santa
and his helpers (MATSSC
employees) brought happiness and holiday cheer to
over 100 children from
three local schools: Joseph
Leidy Elementary, Allen
M. Stearne Elementary,
and John H. Webster Elementary. MATSSC employees sponsor each child
and try to fulfill the wishes
listed on each child’s
handwritten Christmas list.
The festivities started
with a delicious, hot lunch
hosted by Mickey and
Minnie Mouse, Frosty and
the Grinch. The Shriners’
Crescent Clowns bent balloons into silly shapes and
the children had their faces
brightly painted by the
elves. After lunch, the
children participated in a
magic show and Christmas
sing-along until Santa’s
grand entrance. Happy
hearts were displayed by
all!

Remembering a poor baby

When Britany
Lewis was born,
no trumpets and
glad tidings or
even balloons
and baby showers greeted her
arrival. She was
just another poor
baby. Britany
never knew her
father, and for
the first six years of her life lived in
virtual squalor with five siblings and a
mother addicted to drugs who eventually went to prison. Britany barely remembers her, though there are some
details of her early childhood that do stand out—like
the maggots everywhere in their run-down house, even
in the refrigerator.
When Britany was six, her then nineteen-year-old
sister was awarded custody of her young siblings. But
her sister was hardly prepared to be a parent or
provider for her younger sisters and brothers, and the
family was forced to live for over a year in a two-door
Honda Prelude. The deplorable living conditions and
lack of parental guidance caused Britany to miss an en-
ley Press Newspaper, Brittany believes “I overcame the
things from my past because I refuse to let them hold
me back. My plan is to continue to do my best in school
and help others along the way.”
Britany is now also one of the newest winners of the
Children’s Defense Fund’s Beat the Odds® awards program, which recognizes outstanding high school students who have overcome incredible adversity to excel
in school and display incredible self-determination and
a drive toward achievement through the common thread
of hard work, academic excellence, and service to their
communities. On December 1, celebrities and child advocates joined CDF’s California office at an awards
gala honoring Britany and four other extraordinary high
school students from the Los Angeles area. Each of
them will receive a $10,000 college scholarship and
support services including rigorous SAT prep, one-onone college counseling, state-wide college tours, internship opportunities, educational and life-skills
workshops, and guidance and mentoring throughout the
high school and college years.
I am so proud of Britany Lewis and the other youths
recognized in Beat the Odds awards programs in eight
cities this year. But how many more of America’s 16.4
million poor children will never beat the odds stacked
against them and grow up to reach their full potential
the way she has? How many millions of Britanys have
we already lost? How many poor babies were born
today who will never win any awards and whose names
we’ll never know—but who will instead grow up hungry, homeless, poorly educated, and unloved on the outskirts of the American dream?
In the afterglow of Christmas when Christians celebrate the birth of the most famous poor baby in history—the miracle of the incarnation and the belief that
God actually came to live among us as a poor, homeless child—I hope we can honor this holy baby in our
lives today by raising a mighty voice for justice and
protection for all the poor babies and children made in
God's image still left behind in poverty and hopelessness.
tire year of school. No one cared enough to notice or do
anything about it. Her sister also began a destructive
pattern of physical abuse toward Britany that would last
for several years. Once, she dealt a devastating blow
that forced Britany to miss two days of school while
she nursed a black eye. Britany remembers that the
physical pain paled in comparison to the disappointment of tarnishing the perfect attendance record she’d
built up and determinedly maintained for several years
in a row in the midst of the chaos at home. By then,
school had become a refuge.
While millions of children have found safe harbor
with relatives, Britany did not until she was 16. Her sister kicked her out and left her then in the care of her
grandparents. In this current home Brittany has finally
found the love, support, and guidance she needs and deserves. Despite the abandonment, homelessness, and
physical abuse that permeated her childhood, Britany
managed to stand tall against the odds that constantly
threatened to destroy her dreams. Now a high school
senior, she has a 3.94 GPA and is, according to her
guidance counselor, “a proven force” on her high
school campus. Britany serves as Associated Student
Body President and is a vigilant community leader in
programs such as the Youth Commission-City of Lancaster, California and the Teen Builders Community

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-- With 2012 approaching,
many are beginning to whisper "good riddance" to
2011. For those whose past year can be counted in the
"Yuck!" category, motivational speaker Shawn Anderson has a tongue-and-cheek message offering five ways
to guarantee that the new year will look exactly like the
old one. "The best way to guarantee limited success in
2012 is to do more of what you are currently doing,"
says Anderson, a best-selling author on maximizing potential.
Five tips to guarantee limited success in 2012:
1. Set less than spectacular goals. Set your sights low.
Who needs goals...right? An alternative option: Be
bold! Create a wish list for what you want different in
your life. Albert Einstein shared, "Imagination is everything. It is a preview to life's coming attractions." If
your imagination is dull for what you want out of
life...how can you truly live a life that you'll love?
2. Be afraid of taking risks.
Want more of the same limited success this year?
Then don't jump. Don't risk anything. Just keep walking
the exact same status quo road. An alternative option:
Jump! Ray Bradbury wrote: "Sometimes you've got to
jump off cliffs and grow wings on the way down." Sure
there are no guarantees, but if you don't take risks, how
is anything great ever going to happen for you?
3. Watch a lot of TV.
Want to be sure to stay stuck? Flip the TV on! Undoubtedly, there will be a ton of mind-draining shows
on that will absolutely allow you to waste your time.
An alternative option: Kick it into gear! Take one
baby-step forward on one of your goals every day.
Maximize time, and remember that when you put yourself into motion and take action, you initiate the possi-
bility of putting into motion something great.
4. Act like a victim.
It's gotta' be somebody's fault you aren't where you
want to be...right? Go ahead and blame your boss for
not paying you enough. Blame your spouse for you
being unmotivated. Blame your parents for how you
were raised. Blame the government for not having a
program to help you. The reason you are stuck in life
must be because of one of them!
An alternative option: Move forward! Quit blaming
others for your "bad luck." Instead, take responsibility
and improve your life from the inside out. Start a daily
self-improvement program: 1) exercise, 2) read motivational books, and 3) join an empowering organization. We become what we do and what we think.
5. Give up.
You're too old...too broke...too everything to start
over now, so don't even try. Just quit. And point fingers. And watch TV. An alternative option: Make your
life count. As long as your heart is beating, you can
still go for it! You can still make a difference. You can
still influence others. You can still create adventure and
success for yourself. It is all about choosing to make
your like count untilthe end.
Anderson, the Founder of Extra Mile America, an
organization highlighting the power of "going the extra
mile", shares that the biggest obstacle in creating more
of what we want in 2012 is ourselves. "If we don't
change our attitude, our plan and our actions...neither

the 2012 PLBC scholarship
program are now being accepted through Feb. 17.
The PLBC will award five
$1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who
currently attend school in the
Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh or the Chester Upland
school districts, are classified
as a minority, and plan to enroll in an accredited two- or
four-year college in Pennsylvania.

We celebrate the holiday with food.
Tomorrow, we'll visit Bubba Freda who
is now actively dying. In one month, a
cancerous tumor spread over and
through one thigh. Instead of putting
her 90 1/2 year old body through
painful treatment that might have cost her leg and probably brought about an earlier death from shock or anesthesia, she's in Hospice. Hospice is controlling her pain
well and lately, she's awake and upbeat again. Harry and
his brother are grieving of course. We're praying she
lives a lot longer than expected, but in no pain. She
doesn't understand anymore and being moved out of her
room is a terrible punishment to her. We'll bring her a
plain hamburger, french fries, a milkshake, chocolate
candy and her Pepsi--"No Diet!!" tomorrow.

hard to do, but I'm hoping I

Getting down to Business regarding weight and health
of the towers and the signal comes via the airwaves. Periodically I listen to terrestrial talk radio to get a feel for
what people are talking about and how they see the
world. What we listen to reflects our consciousness and
interests. What you listen to tells a lot about you. What
we watch, read or listen to re-enforces our belief system
and values (more accurately the beliefs and values we
were indoctrinated to accept.) Frankly I’m flummoxed
when I listen to sports talk stations; the way the callers
refer to their favorite team as “we”; as if they’re on the
team, suit up, practice, sweat and play the games. They
know more about the professional athletes’ batting averages, yards per carry, free throw stats than they do abut
their own selves. They are hyped to the point of fanaticism and foolishness about men and some women making millions playing games; more so than they are about
their own lives !
Sports is a multi-billion dollar industry. As a former
high school and college soccer and basketball referee, I
know scholastic and collegiate athletics can be an integral part of a well rounded educational experience. But
all too often today, professional sports are nothing more
than escapism, a way to put the doldrums and monotony
of life on hold for a few hours. But why are we bored and
stagnant? Life is toofull of opportunities and way too
short for such things. What if we put the same enthusiasm we put into watching sports into the various aspects
of our personal lives? What if we put the same attention
to detail and preparation into our own lives we put into
making sure we have just the right items for the tailgate
party? What if we researched and applied metaphysical
and spiritual principles the same way we researched and
negotiated our Fantasy Football picks? Do you think
there would be a lot more energized and happy people
around?
Here’s a suggestion, for this year 2012 minimize being
a spectator and become more active. Get up, get out and
do something different. Enjoy participating in life rather
than being a mere witness. Take up a hobby, pursue one
of your dreams and ambitions, volunteer, go for it and
see what happens. More than likely the process will be an
enjoyable one, you’ll learn a lot about yourself in the
process and you’ll be happy doing it.

Year can be thought of
as a new series of opportunities to actualize our potential, to make the
myriad possibilities and options at our disposal
real. The world is what we say it is for us. We have the
power and potential to call things that be not as if they
are, meaning we can create by calling forth our ideas, desires and images and allow the UNIVERSE to work on
our behalf to make them so. We have the gift of imagination the ability to form ideas, pictures and images in our
mind’s eye. All too often we just use this powerful tool
on a lower potency level by merely daydreaming, engaging in fantasy or wishful thinking.
We have the ability to be creators and we can take full
advantage of what we already have right here and now to
move to a higher level by using our innate powers to envision a better world, wholesome communities, healthier
families, a more civil environment, peace and prosperity.
In contemporary culture we hear so much about New
Year’s resolutions, people make lists of what they want
to do, be and accomplish during the coming year. Unfortunately because we have not been taught how to actualize our latent powers, talents, gifts and aptitudes, because
we do not know who and what we really are and we have
not been taught the principles of success we stumble
through life rarely accomplishing or achieving the things
we say we want out of life. Rarely do we actualize our
full potential. Why?
Because we allow others to set our agenda, determine
what is important, define our world view, set our self
image and focus. We live in a culture that is essentially
unspiritual, overly materialistic and ethically cretinous.
It is no wonder most of our energies are dissipated and
misdirected away from our best interests towards maladaptive conformist behaviors that enrich other folks but
endanger our health, well being and undermine our social
networks.
We are literally sleeping giants slumbering away as the
world/life passes us by. Even worse we find ourselves sitting on the sidelines unaware of the reality that life is not
a spectator sport. Wake up, get up and begin to take
charge of your life. Happiness, success and fulfillment
are inside jobs. No one can make you happy or unhappy.
Happiness is not based upon circumstances or your bank
account.
We are in the throes of an economic downturn so if
your happiness is based upon your income, your cash on
hand, the economy or any such thing you probably aren’t
feeling too euphoric right now. If your happiness is based
upon the political landscape, you probably aren’t feeling
real cheerful now, with all the partisan bickering, the incivility, foolishness and betrayal going on across the political spectrum. But if your happiness is based upon a
confidence, an assuredness that all is well no matter
what, you are in good shape. Better yet if you envision a
better life for yourself, your people and community and
you are living in accordance with your vision to the best
of your ability, you are probably a happy person.
I produce and host several Internet radio programs on a
couple of Internet radio stations. I have to do research to
prepare for the guests and topics I cover. Most of my topics are about serious matters such as the wars, politics
and the economy. People who are on satellite and Internet
radio refer to traditional radio as terrestrial radio because

for children at the People’s Emergency Center

Bridge.
The event took place at
Le Cochon Noir, located
at 5070 Parkside Ave. The
owner Jamal Parker said the quaint spot has been open
for the past year or more. The place started with jazz on
the front lawn until the facility was renovated and once
the doors opened, they could not keep people out of the
fine establishment that offers jazz and blues and great
cuisine.

Clarena I.W. Tolson announced today the Residential Christmas Tree
Recycling Program will
run from Tuesday, January
3 through Saturday, January 14. The 24-year old
program was developed by
the Streets Department’s
Sanitation Division to provide citizens with an environmentally safe
alternative for the disposal
of used trees.
Citizens who wish to
drop off their trees to be
recycled may take it to the
Streets Department Sanitation Convenience Centers
located at 3033 S. 63rd
Street, Domino Lane &
Umbria Street and State
Road & Ashburner Street
during the two-week program. The Sanitation Convenience Centers are open
8:00 am to 6:00 pm from
Monday through Saturday.
Please note, the City will
be closed on Monday, January 2 in observance of the
New Year’s holiday.
Streets Commissioner Tolson urges citizens to follow these tips for a
successful recycling program:
Trees brought to the site
to be recycled should be
free of all decorations and
untied. Christmas trees
with decorations cannot be
recycled and will be
placed with rubbish.
Trees should not be
brought to the site in plastic bags.
Christmas trees present
a seasonal addition to the
City’s waste stream. By
recycling them and returning them to the earth, we
help to reduce the number
of discarded trees that end
up in landfills.
There will be no curbside collection of Christmas trees for recycling
purposes. Trees left at the
curb will be considered as
trash and will be picked up
on regularly scheduled
trash days. As always, the
program is for citizens
who receive City collected
trash and recycling services. Vendors are responsible for making
arrangements for the private disposal of their discarded trees.

Mehgan Wieland’s paintings will be showcased. Her
work will be displayed from Dec. 26th to Jan. 22nd with
a Wine and Cheese Reception tonight from 6 to 8 p..m at
Le Cochon Noir.
Another component of King’s Holiday Party was to
help raise money for a play station or XBOX to entertain
the children at the Peoples Emergency Center, at 3902
Spring Garden Street. However, she was surprised when
Dr. Darren Devoue donated both the Playstation and
XBOX to the children.
The other proceeds went to Jazz Bridge, an organization dedicated to assisting jazz, and blues musicians in
the lower Delaware Valley during times of crisis. To accomplish this the group collaborates with professionals,
corporations and nonprofits that provide free and low-fee
services. Their financial support comes from donations,
grants and neighborhood concerns throughout the region.

big party at the station and everyone you could think of
was there. The festivities include great food, drinks and

What a day it was at the Wells Fargo Center! Stars from
Disney On Ice volunteered their time to make gumbo in
honor of Princess Tiana at Wells Fargo Center. The gumbo
was donated to the Drueding Center shelter in Philadelphia,
as requested by Princess Tiana. Princess Tiana joins Rapunzel and Cinderella in Disney On Ice presents Dare to Dream,
which opens a 24-show run at Wells Fargo Center.
The press night, was a blast kids got a chance to take
picture with Mickey Mouse and Princess Tiana who was
beautiful. And she wasn’t the only one beautiful. Dare to
Dream featured the stories of the Princess and the Frog;
Cinderella and Tangled.
The creative minds behind the show found ways to
make the long hair visable and entertaining in “Tangled”.
Plus, the horses that pulled the carriage in Cinderella was
unbelievable – I think my favorite; and the mystical story
of the Princess and Frog thrilling. A good night for my
nieces and nephews. Well That’s the Philly Beat!!
The way I see it: The more things
change, the more they stay the same
As a legislator, I have
come across pieces of legislation, commentary from
public figures and news stories that I believe are discriminatory in nature. They
have caused me to think that
the more things change, the
more they stay the same.
While great strides have
been made in civil rights and
equality, this country still
faces varying levels of discrimination and prejudices.
I am concerned about a measure the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed that aims to
limit one of the duties and liberties many have fought
and died for: a citizen’s right to vote. The voter ID legislation, if passed, will silence many minority, low-income and senior voters throughout the Commonwealth.
These groups are more likely than any other to lack an
acceptable form of identification at the polls. This
measure is an attempt at disenfranchising voters whose
needs may not fall in line with the Republican majority
in the Commonwealth. Over the last decade, out of an
estimated 20 million ballots, we’ve only seen four cases
of voter fraud. Relatively speaking, if only four out of
20 million students failed in school, we would consider
that outstanding. If only four out of 20 million were unemployed, we would consider that full employment. If
only four out of 20 million people were diagnosed with
cancer, we would consider that a medical victory. But
for some reason the proponents of mandatory voter ID
think that four out of 20 million people committing
voter fraud is a major problem. Those that support this
measure are trying to prevent a problem that is nearly
non-existent. This is a solution in search of a problem.
We should not create barriers to people expressing their
constitutional right to vote. We should encourage voter
turnout and seek ways to increase participation.
“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought
forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are
created equal.” These words, spoken by Abraham Lincoln, are being violated daily. Conservatives throughout
this country have failed to treat all men equally. They
have made every effort to contradict the values behind
this statement and infringe upon civil liberties and discriminate against minorities, the poor, mentally challenged and senior citizens. Such efforts have been made
at all levels from government to religious institutions.
These institutions should be the pillars of our communities and the very sources that exemplify equality, liberty
and justice for all.
The disenfranchisement issue has reared its ugly head
in other forms within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as recently as last week when legislation, which I
voted against, was reported out of the House Judiciary
Committee.
House Bill 2032 addresses theft of scrap metals and
would enact additional mandatory minimum sentences
for violations. This bill is unnecessary because current
law already addresses the problem of theft of scrap metals and imposes legal penalties on violators of the law.
This legislation unfairly targets the disadvantaged, undereducated and substance abusers who fail to understand the gravity of their actions. Most of these people
cannot afford quality legal counsel like the more afflu-

ent and have their charges reduced or dismissed all together. For instance, two people are charged with an
identical crime, but due to resources or the lack thereof
they get treated differently. This leaves such groups to
face stiffer sentences and increased penalties. This is
simply another attempt at targeting the less fortunate of
our communities.
The discrimination does not stop within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Recent comments made by Republican presidential
candidate Newt Gingrich were disturbing, to say the
least. Gingrich inferred that the unemployment problems within our cities are a result of a lack of work
ethic, perpetuated from generation to generation. Statistically, his remarks target African-Americans and
Hispanics. He suggested that inner city children have
not seen a valid example of work ethic and therefore
have been conditioned to be “lazy.” Mr. Gingrich
should not be so quick to judge people who are down
on their luck. There are many examples of people, academics, athletes and entertainers who have changed
their condition through hard work and self-determination. Perhaps he may not see them from where he sits,
but I see them in neighborhoods and communities in
the inner city and the rural communities.
Mr. Gingrich’s solution to the problem: putting children to work. What Mr. Gingrich fails to acknowledge
is that many times these children that he is recommending work as janitors in schools, are already taking
on the task of helping to run a household and care for
siblings while the parent or guardian of the home is
making paltry wages in an effort to provide for their
families. He is clearly out of touch with the people he
is unfairly targeting. His proposal would not only restructure child labor laws, it would also eliminate
unionized janitors; both of these issues having been
objectives of conservatives for quite some time now.
A story recently caught my attention about a Kentucky church that banned interracial marriage in an,
“attempt to promote greater unity among the church
body and the community (they serve),” This came in
response to a request from a member of their congregation, a Caucasian woman, who is engaged to a man
whose birthplace is in Zimbabwe. Only 15 members of
the congregation voted on the proposed language, with
nine in favor. The rest of the congregation chose to refrain from casting a vote on the matter. It is disgraceful
that an institution that teaches principles such as loving
thy neighbor and having compassion for others would
decline to join two people in marriage because of a superficial difference between them.
Again, I declare that the more things change, the
more they stay the same. Unless we relinquish efforts,
at all levels, that disenfranchise voters and discriminate
against the people of our communities, we will fail to
live up to the very principles of which this great country was founded. Certainly the Constitution gives the
inalienable rights to ALL of the citizens of these
United States to live free lives in pursuit of happiness.
That being said, I believe it is the responsibility of all
elected officials to represent the best interest of the
people. We should keep the process honest and fair for
all. If the entire eligible Pennsylvania constituency
cannot exercise their right to vote, how then is the
democratic process true to our way of life?

On Sunday, December
18, Tamika Patton (Voted
Radio One's Most Inspirational Singer in America) and her annual
"Night of Caroling" event
partnered with the
Supreme Gospel Entertainment's 10th annual
BrothaZ & SistaZ Christmas Fellowship and Outreach at the Ark
Entertainment Center.
The goal of the partnership was to combine resources to raise as much
money for the annual
Christmas food basket giveaway.
With assistance from Tonya Ginyard of Esther Productions and Gospel Highway 11, Sadina Davis of Create the
Look Hair Directory and Karen Carthy of True Light Fellowship Church the annual event turned out to be fun and
inspiring. New Jersey's Christopher Armstrong sung a
beautiful medley and Philly's Rodney Talley sung us all
into a worship and praise moment with his selection.

sing then another person would sing and so on. That was a
lot of fun as the audience warmed up quickly and got into
the Christmas spirit.
After the caroling, the Battle of the Sexes began with a
group of men and women going head to head on questions
ranging from entertainment to social issues. Ms. Patton
served as the host for that portion and the game served as a
great ice breaker for everyone. Needless to say the women
one.
From caroling to the Battle of the Sexes game came the
bidding on SGEM care packages hosted by Marcus C.
Smith. The audience had to bid on items that were in covered baskets without knowing what was in them. That
proved to be very exciting as the bids got higher and higher
people got more anxious to know what was in the package
and wanted to be the highest bidder. In addition, we were
blessed to have Shoprite on board as an in-kind sponsor.
Because of their generosity, two audience members were
able to shop at the market for the holiday. The final part of
the evening was hosted by Tonya Ginyard where she raffled
off a gigantic basket full of expensive toys. The money
raised from that raffle was going to benefit one family in
particular whose loved one was given less than six months
to live but had a personal wish she wanted fulfilled.
Once the winner of the raffle was announced it was time
for everyone to dance, dance, dance. With the Gospel
music playing courtesy of Ernest Watkins and Chosen Vessel Productions the party continued for a while longer.
Overall, it was a very special evening and fun for everyone.

In ancient Mexico, turquoise was reserved for the gods
and could not be worn by mere mortals. In the 13th century, turquoise was thought to protect its wearer from
falling especially from horses. Legend says tears of joy
combined with rain seeped into mother earth to become
sky stone or turquoise. Native Americans believe that attaching turquoise to a bow would help the arrows hit their
mark. In Tibet today, turquoise is by far the most popular
of all materials used for personal adornment; it also plays
an important part in religious ceremonies. Turquoise was
discovered by the Egyptians around 3000 B.C. and was
used in their finest jewelry and ornaments.

Rhythm is a key component of African American culture, African culture and African Diasporic cultures
around the world. Dr. Angela Nelson clearly addresses
this issue in her book, This is How We Flow: Rhythm in
Black Culture. She argues: "Rhythm is the foundation of
all African American popular and folk music. Rhythm in
rap is especially important because it gives rap its movement momentum, and a significant portion of its meaning. Since the art of rapping is based on a precise
knowledge skill and ability to use complex rhythm, rappers themselves boast of their skill in being able to control it."

Williams ‘Gifts for the Holiday’ party and toy

Denean Thomas sat in her wheelchair eagerly awaiting
the arrival of Santa Claus. She excelled at Hardy
Williams Charter School; now she is home schooled. Denean was diagnosed a year ago with a brain stem tumor.
As if radiation and chemotherapy did not take enough of
a toll on her small body, she was shot twice in the leg in
July 2010 simply for being in the wrong place at the
wrong time.
Denean’s mother, LaTitia Johnson, says Denean’s
fighting spirit keeps her going. So do her four siblings,

The Thomas family was at the Simeone Foundation
Automotive Museum in Southwest Philadelphia for state
Senator Anthony H. Williams’ Holiday Party and Toy
Giveaway. They were among more than 200 children and
their parents who stood wide-eyed with excitement,
awaiting the arrival of Santa at this special treat-filled
party.
“Gifts for the Holidays” featured a magician and tasty
refreshments for children in need. The party attendees
were pre-selected by social service and faith-based institutions throughout the 8th Senatorial District. Lincoln

As Williams addressed the crowd, he understood that
these challenging economic times have brought hardships on families. With area unemployment at nearly 11
percent, higher than the national average, and scores of
families struggling to make ends meet, holiday delights
have been out of reach for many.

downturns. They are supposed to do well in school,
dream about the future and be happy at Christmas. They

they’re playing outside like Denean Thomas did,” said
Williams. “This celebration and our efforts to get guns
off the streets are our contributions toward that end – to
give children and their families a safe and happy Christmas experience.”
Two year old Anh Khoa Tran bounded into the museum’s party area with his four year old sister Anh Thu
and their mother Thu Hang. Anh Khoa. He could hardly
contain his excitement about the activities awaiting him.
Dee the Magician enthralled the young crowd, all of
them waving their hands high in the air to be picked as
his next assistant.
Chigbawa Nwegbo was animated all afternoon. Handsomely clothed in slacks and a suit vest, he watched the
younger children laugh at the magic tricks, often taking
pictures of his siblings and engaging the adults in conversation. It was not hard to imagine him one day following
in the footsteps of his father, Colwyn Borough Councilman Sunday Nwegbo.
The highly anticipated arrival of Santa Claus was excitedly announced by Williams, who then greeted the
children and their parents as they lined up to have their
pictures taken with Santa and receive their toys from
Santa’s elves.
As Santa bellowed a jolly “ho ho ho,” four year old
Marquise Floyd Reid wasn’t sure what to make of him.
“I’m scared,” he said quietly as he hid behind his mother.
That all changed when it was his turn to receive his toys.
Williams will see to it that Santa’s elves deliver gifts to
any child who was invited to the event, but could not attend.
“The love and generosity among families, friends and
neighbors in this room is what the spirit of Christmas is
all about,” Williams said. “What’s important here today
is that these children will have great memories of a
happy Christmas and that their parents will have a little
more ease.
That certainly was the case for Denean Thomas and
her family.
As for two year old Ahn Khoa Tran, he was last seen
grinning ear to ear, trying to carry a new bicycle almost
as tall as he is across the room as he waved goodbye to
Santa.

Worship Celebration at
WarmDaddy’s. WarmDaddy’s was filled to capacity as the very loving
crowd listened to the magnificent performances by E. Daniels, Angeley Crawford
and Donielle Rodwell. This event was hosted by Shelly
Williams of Urban X-pressions (wow that’s me!) The audience was incredibly warm and accepting I truly Gregory Greene for all his kindness and professionalism.
Theresa Noye topped the night off with an amazing
performance featuring some of her songs from her debut
EP “You Saw Me” and some classic Christmas songs. To
hear more from Theresa Noye she will be a worship
leader at Conquer the Night on January 13, 2012 at
Christ Community Church located 4017 Chestnut Street.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Theresa and it will air
on Urban X-pressions this Saturday at 1:30am on WWSI

think that it was great of president Obama to bring home
our troops that were stationed
in Iraq, especially now. I
don’t want to sound corny but
a lot of men, women and children have missed their loved
ones too long. Anytime they can come home is good
to me. They have done their duty, now it’s time to let
them be with their families. Besides it’s time.

No matter, I want to support the President 100% and I feel
that we all should.
Now if can only fix the job problem. In order to bring a
meaningful solution to the problem, we need the help from
people who in my mind just don’t get it. Not to wish any
harm upon anyone, but it would be interesting if the Republicans lost their jobs so they could know what it feels like to
be poor, homeless and in need through no fault of your own.
I really think they all need that to wake up.
Anyway, about my cousin Pastor Dr. Alyn Waller paying
people’s layaway bills – now that’s doing something. That’s
Oprah Winfrey stuff. Some Pastor’s talk. Politicians talk,
but cuz did it. Not everyone is built like that. God bless you
cuz. I am rally proud of you big time and so is the whole
Gang Association. We go around telling young people who
they should look up to and respect, well Pastor Waller you
win hands down on that note.
What is always good about this time of year is that people
always find ways to look into their hearts and become
human again. It’s amazing.
Thursday I went to a good old-fashioned holiday party at
the 332 Labor Union Headquarters that was attended by
everyone from Mayor Nutter to the guy or gal on the street.
They give a Holiday party every year. People eat, dance and
fellowship and it is so nice to see people of all religions and
backgrounds really get along. We need that today so I was
glad I asked to attend.

On New Years Eve
many of us will gather in
church for the purpose of
praying the old year out
and the New Year in. Traditionally this is called
“Watch Night Service.”
In many African –
American Churches, this
has been the most important prayer meeting of the
Christian year. For we
gather to thank God for
keeping us through the
past year and to be found in a state of prayer on
bended knees in “God’s House. When the clock
strikes 12 midnight and the New Year begins.
Now the act of being on bended knees at the
midnight hour is supported by the spiritual belief among
Black folk that a good ending and beginning are necessary ingredients for the Christian year. You see, Black
Theology believes God can and will forgive the sins of
the pat year in a special way on this night that closes the
year and opens up the New Year. This golden moment
affords the child of God the annual opportunity to make a
new resolution to live a more “Holy Life.”
This is also a night for us as saints to give our “Testimonies” and make our “Determinations.” A testimony is
a personal statement of what God had done in the believer’s life. A determination is a statement the believer
makes committing themselves to live a better life or to
overcome some personal fault.
I can remember with freshness those testimonies and
determinations our fore-parents would give. I can remember some of the old saints at my home church, Calvary Baptist in Chester saying:
Children, I have been coming up the rough side of the
mountain all year. Along the way I thought I wouldn’t
make it. But I kept on praying and the Lord has brought
me through and I’m here to tell the story.
And another saying: Church, I haven’t been as good
this year as I ought,
I know I have fallen short of the mark but I want y’all

to pray for me that
I might overcome my faults and failures.
Then just before the midnight hour the minister, God’s
man began praying because it is believed that only he
could unite God’s people with divine power at a depth
suitable for this occasion.
When the prayer service was all over and the New
Year had begun the saints got up from their knees shouting, singing, praying and praising God wishing everyone
present a “Happy New Year.”
I have attended this annual prayer meeting since I was
a very young child. I believe that there is a spiritual and
psychological sense of security that comes from being on
bended knees in prayer at this midnight hour. So I urge
you to get to some church at least a few minutes before

A healthy diet has numerous benefits. Healthy foods

Pennsylvanians will make the New Year’s resolution to
quit smoking in 2012. While quitting smoking is extremely difficult—six out of 10 smokers require multiple
quit attempts to stop smoking—preparing a quit-smoking
plan can greatly improve a person's chance for success.
The following are proven tips and resources from the
American Lung Association that have helped thousands
of people give up smoking for good:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the various
types of treatments and different over-the-counter and
prescription medications that are available to help you
quit smoking.
Look into the different options available to help smokers quit. Visit www.lung.org/stop-smoking or call 1-800LUNG-USA (1-800-586-4872) for suggestions.
Take time to plan. Pick your quit date a few weeks
ahead of time and mark it on the calendar. If you can,
pick a day when life's extra stresses are not at their peak,
such as after the holidays. Mark a day on the calendar
and stick to it. As your quit day approaches, gather the
medications and tools you need and map out how you are
going to handle the situations that make you want to
smoke.
Get some exercise every day. Walking is a great way to
reduce the stress of quitting. Exercise is proven to not
only combat weight gain but also to improve mood and
energy levels.
Eat a balanced diet, drink lots of water and get plenty
of sleep.
Ask family, friends and co-workers for their help and
support. Having someone to take a walk with or just listen can give a needed boost.
You don't have to quit alone. Help is available online
and in your community. Consider joining a stop-smoking

12 hours after quitting – The carbon monoxide level in

1 – 9 months after quitting – Coughing and shortness
of breath decrease; cilia (tiny hair-like structures that
move mucus out of the lungs) start to regain normal
function in the lungs, increasing the ability to handle
mucus, clean the lungs and reduce the risk of infection.
1 year after quitting – The excess risk of coronary heart
disease is half that of a continuing smoker’s.
5 years after quitting – Risk of cancer of the mouth,
throat, esophagus and bladder are cut in half. Cervical
cancer risk falls to that of a non-smoker. Stroke risk can
fall to that of a non-smoker after 2 – 5 years.
10 years after quitting – The risk of dying from lung
cancer is about half that of a person who is still smoking
and the risk of cancer of the larynx and pancreas decreases.
15 years after quitting – The risk of coronary heart disease is that of a non-smoker’s.
“I started to take steps to quit smoking one year and a
half ago,” says Keith Paradise of Chambersburg, Pa.,
who was able to go smoke-free through the help of the

on his girlfriend’s 9-year-old daughter as one of the many
reasons he decided to quit smoking, Keith adds “since

application in person or over the phone. Early-onset
Alzheimer’s falls under the purview of Compassionate
