Review of the History of the Texas Chapter of the Society For
Review of the History of the Texas Chapter of the Society For Information Display Every chapter of SID needs a founder dedicated to the field of displays and a company that would be willing to initially fund and provide the logistics for the young chapter. In 1996 Dr. Zvi Yaniv moved from Michigan to Austin, Texas to take a position with SI Diamond Technology, Inc. (SIDT). While in Michigan, Dr. Yaniv started the Detroit Chapter of the SID. After taking his position at SIDT Dr. Yaniv was instrumental in the formation of the Texas Chapter in 1997. Dr. Yaniv was named to the position of director of the Texas Chapter. SIDT as well as other display companies in Texas became more active at SID events. In fact at SID in 1997, SIDT presented for the first time a CNT field emission display for large format information billboards. Despite this fact, later on, SID awarded Ise/Noritake Electronics for presenting a similar type of the proof of concept at SID 1998. The photo below shows Richard Fink, Zhidan Tolt and Zvi Yaniv at the SIDT booth at SID 1997 with the CNT field emission working display in the background. May 1997. One focus of the Chapter was on intellectual property issues in the flat panel display industry. International symposiums related to the IP issues in the flat panel display industry were very successfully organized in Austin, Texas on March 12, 1999, March 20, 2000, March 19, 2001 and March 18, 2002. 1

The Texas Chapter also awarded their members for outstanding technical accomplishments and for their activities in developing the Chapter and the SID organization as a whole. Summer 2002, Austin, Texas Dr. Tadashi Sasaki, Senior Executive Vice President of Sharp Corporation, visited the Texas Chapter of the SID and the University of Texas at Austin receiving a special award for his lifelong contribution to LCD and solar cell industries. Dr. Sasaki’s award from the IC2 Institute of the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Chapter of the SID November 17, 2003 Technical achievement award presented to Dr. Larry Hornbeck for outstanding technical accomplishments in developing digital micromirror devices for high quality projection displays. Other significant Chapter events: Summer 1999 In summer 1999 the SID Texas Chapter celebrated the unveiling of the first full color sun‐visible electronic billboard. At this event, in addition to many of the SID Texas Chapter members, there were almost 250 people present. Dr. Ernst Lueder, the Vice President of the European Region of SID and the director of the Display Institute of the University of Stuttgart, honored us with his presence during this event. The billboard in operation as information and advertising tool February 2002: The first video conference event of the Texas Chapter took place on February 4, 2002. This meeting and several other meetings took place in the Global Classroom at the IC2 Institute, The University of Texas at Austin. Lunch was supported by Winstead, Sechrest and Minick, P.C. of Austin, TX. Dr. Bruce Gnade, Chairman, Dept. of Materials Science, University of North Texas, Denton, TX, spoke on “Nanotechnology Efforts at the University of North Texas”. Over the years, about 40 Texas Chapter events were conducted by video conference. March 2003: The Texas Chapter of the SID coordinated a Focus Session on Nanotechnology for Display Applications during the recent American Physical Society (APS) March Meeting in Austin, TX. This meeting is the biggest physics meeting of the year, with an estimated 5600 talks delivered during the entire meeting. The APS March Meeting is traditionally a showcase for both important fundamental physics and also the kind of applied physics that forms the backbone of modern technology in all its diverse forms. October 2004: The Texas Chapter was instrumental in organizing and running the first Americas Display Engineering and Application Conference (ADEAC) 2004. In fact Dr. Yaniv was the chair of this conference (see below). 7
Mr. Stefan Peana and Eugen Munteanu from Dell Computers, Chip Thuesen and Dr. Richard Fink from ANI were the main architects of this conference and were awarded by the Chapter Certificates of Commendation for their extraordinary efforts. September 2007 The Needs and Challenges of the $100 Laptop Computer Members of the Texas Chapter of the SID and guests met on the evening of September 12, 2007, to discuss issues surrounding the $100 Laptop Computer. This event was also supported by the Central Texas IEEE Electron Devices Chapter. Four presented on various aspects of the $100 Laptop Computer were given, ranging from the commercial and cultural demand to the technical requirements of the display. The event was further enhanced by samples and demonstrations brought by some of the speakers. 8

February 2010: Texas Chapter first Webinar event ‐ Paul Drzaic presented "Where's My Flexible Display?" Special events Summer 2006 – Dr. Tadashi Sasaki honored the Texas Chapter by deciding to celebrate his 90th birthday in Austin, Texas with the Chapter members. Dr. Sasaki was one of the giants in the LCD business and as a senior executive VP of Sharp Corporation transformed Sharp Corporation from a mechanical calculator business to a giant LCD TV business. Dr. Sasaki was a mentor to Dr. Yaniv and as a result the Texas Chapter has been enjoying strong relations with him and his many friends.
