What is St. Patrick’s Day without an Irish celebration?
That is the motto that Michael Collopy lived by.
Collopy, 66, of Hobbs, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, but
his memory lives on through his wife, Suzy.
“He loved St. Patrick’s Day and made it a point to celebrate it every year,” Suzy said.
Collopy was an attorney and owned the local law firm
Collopy Law Offices.
“He always closed the office early on St. Patrick’s Day,”
Suzy said. “He invited people over to have drinks in the
afternoon and celebrated by wearing green and flying the
Irish flag at his office.”
Before Collopy passed, he was able to trace his lineage
back to his great-grandfather, who immigrated to the U.S.
in 1845 from Limerick, Ireland. His great-grandfather
married an Irish woman and became a farmer in Carroll,
Mich.
“Michael enjoyed learning about his family heritage,”
Suzy said. “He really appreciated the Irish culture and
everything about it.”
Collopy was diagnosed with esophageal cancer three
years ago and was battling the disease with chemotherapy sessions when he passed away. However, he was able to
take his dream vacation to Ireland with his wife before
the cancer affected his health.
“We took a two-week trip to Ireland,” Suzy said. “We

Hobbs city commissioners approved placing traffic bollards — thick,
metal posts cemented
into the ground to act as
barriers — at the end of
the alley, prohibiting
drivers on Grimes and
Acoma from entering,
during their Monday
meeting.
Todd Randall, city engineer, said residents in the
area have complained
about the amount of traffic and the speeds cars
were traveling down the
alley.
“We have on average
over 150 cars a day going
through the alley,” he
said. “On average the top
speed everybody was
traveling was 20 miles per
hour one direction and 16
miles per hour in the
other direction. The
alleys are secondary
routes, which the speed
limits for alleys are supposed to be 15 miles per
hour.”
Randall said one-way
signs were posted to try
and relieve the amount of
cars traveling in the alley
and reduce the speeds.
“This has been an issue,
in fact, it was attempted
to be addressed originally
by just signage,” he said.
“So really, from Vista it’s
a one-way alley but we

The Albuquerque-based construction company was recently
contracted for the construction of
a new Broadmoor Elementary and
a new elementary school, which
will be constructed adjacent to
Hobbs City Park.
Dennis Towne, executive vicepresident of Bradbury Stamm and
head coach of the construction
project, said the team was looking
forward to working with the district to get the two schools constructed.
“I love building schools,” Towne
said. “It’s a really neat opportunity
to do two at the same time for a
school district. This is extremely
exciting. We’re itching to go.”
The company will be responsible
for the construction of a 450-student kindergarten-fifth grade elementary school which will include
the Jenkins-Nunan Learning
Center and a new 400-student
Broadmoor Elementary School.
The new 6,500-square-foot elementary school will be located
near Hobbs City Park at 510 Dal
Paso Street. The new Broadmoor
school building will replace the
current school building and will be
constructed where the current

Month. Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically
appears during the first three

money for a new playground at the
LACES school.

Teens: Facility needs high standards
City exploring multi-generation facility

Several Hobbs youth told city commissioners they would like to see a
multi-generation facility built in Hobbs but wanted it to be a place
where out-of-towners would get a feel of Lea County’s “respectable”
communities.
Teen Court of Lea County youth members presented to the Hobbs city
commission their thoughts on the Genoveva Chavez Community
Recreational Facility in Santa Fe, during a Monday commission meeting.
City Manager J.J. Murphy, said he met up with some of the teen court
youth at the state’s capital at the beginning of February.
“I was lucky enough to run into these students at municipal day with
Commissioner Crystal Mullins and Commissioner Jonathan Sena,” he
said. “We were going to the Chavez center and offered them (an invitation), if they had time, to maybe go see it. When we got there they were
already there. I think they want us to explore the possibility of bringing

Towne said the team has no qualms about
working in the tight space where Broadmoor
currently sits.
“A lot of times we work in spaces like that,”
Towne said, “and it’s typically like this situation, where you already have an existing facility. We’ve done this all over the state and we’ve
learned how to work around it.”
While a new Broadmoor Elementary School is
being constructed, students will continue to
attend classes in the current building.
Director of Operations Gene Strickland said a
design committee comprised of school staff,
administrators and members of the design
team from Dekker/Perich/Sabatini will continue to meet to work on the design of both school
campuses.
“Images of those designs will be available in
April,” Strickland said at Tuesday’s school
board meeting.
District officials hope to break ground on both
school buildings in June.

retire. She had a dog named

Landrum
Mr. Landrum was born Aug. 31, 1955 in
Seminole, the son of Barbara
(Hudspeth) and Paul G.
Landrum, Sr. He served his
country in the U.S. Marine
Corps and married Cassondra
Lynch on Sept. 17, 1992 in
Seminole. He had lived in
Hobbs for the past 22 years.
Paul was a member of the
Christian
Fellowship
of
Believers in Hobbs. He worked
as a drilling consultant for
seven years for Chesapeake
Oil. With his passing, Paul's
knowledge of the oilfield will
be greatly missed. He was
admired by all who worked
with him in the oilfield.
Paul was a member of
Masonic Lodge No. 63 in
Hobbs, and was a 32nd degree
Mason, as well as a 32nd
degree in the Scottish Rites.
He was also a member of the
Shriners, where he had served
as president. Paul was a member of the NRA, and loved to go
fishing and hunting with his
kids and grandkids.
Paul passed away at St.
Luke's Hospital in Houston on
March 16, 2014. He is preceded
in death by his mother,
Barbara; one granddaughter,
Makayla; one brother-in-law,
Richard Morris, and one
nephew, Toby Johnson. He is
survived
by
his
wife,
Cassondra “Cricket” Landrum
of Hobbs; his father, Paul G.
Landrum of Carlsbad; three
sons, Robert & wife Sara of
Hobbs; Paul III of Post Falls,
Idaho; and Jason of Andrews;
four daughters, Elizabeth &

the guest speaker at this year’s
Jal Chamber of Commerce
banquet and her theme
spurred the chamber to come
up with a new award — the Jal
Community Spirit Award.
Jal Chamber President P.J.
Parker said Hanna came up
with the theme for this year’s
banquet,
Celebrating
Community Spirit. After talking with Hanna the board
decided it was time for a new
community award.
“The board thought giving an
award to that theme would be
good,” Parker said. “Someone
who encourages growth and
development for the welfare of
the whole city. We used to give
a business of the year, but they
are all business of the year to
me so we decided to start new
category.”
Parker said this year’s recipient of the spirit award epitomizes Christian spirit and giving.
“She does so much for the
kids,” Parker said.
Also recognized at the banquet, which is 6 p.m. tonight at
the Jal Community Center, 100
W. Panther, will be the students of the year and a volunteer of the year.

Hanna, a lifelong Lea County
resident now residing in
Dallas, said in an email her
theme is “The Spirit of Jal”
and will focus on more than
1,000 Jal people from over the
years and the light they have
shown throughout the community in the form of a

A Saturday night fire that
took the life of a Hobbs resident has been deemed accidental by the fire marshal.
“The fire originated in the
attic due to an electrical failure,” Hobbs Fire Marshal Eric
Enriquez said. “Relatives of
the victim indicated that the
lights would flicker and breakers would trip at times. This is
an indicator that electrical
problems are apparent.”
Adelee Brice, 91, was
declared dead on scene at 3206
North Dal Paso.
Enriquez said Brice was
found by firefighters inside
the house while combating the
fire which took about four
hours to extinguish.
“We responded to a fire at
approximately
3
a.m.
Saturday,” Enriquez said.
“Upon entry, fire crews were
trying to extinguish the blaze
and they encountered the
body. She lived by herself.”
Enriquez has been with HFD
for five years. He said fatalities during fires are a rare
occurrence.
“We’ve had two in the last
three years,” Enriquez said.
“Prior to that we hadn’t had
any in 20 years.”
