A Note from our President…
I
any animal lover can help homeless pets
If you are reading this article, I would assume you are an animal lover. Before you
decide to adopt, make sure the dog or cat you select is a good fit for your lifestyle. An
animal should be a lifetime commitment, not a whim. No matter how nice, a shelter is a
scary place for a pet. There are some things you can do as an animal lover to keep pets
out of shelters.
Adopt from a shelter, rather than from the internet or a pet store.
Understand the commitment involved in bringing a pet home. It needs to be a family decision. Animals need to eat, drink, play and learn.
Learn about the breed you want to adopt. If it is a mixed breed, learn about all the
breeds you recognize. Be informed.
Spay or neuter your animals, if they are not already.
Keep an ID tag on your pet along with a microchip that is up to date with your current contact information. Tags can be lost, but a microchip stays put.
Have a plan to care for your pet should something happen to you. Don’t assume
that your family is willing and/or able .
Teach children at a young age humane care and empathy for animals. Remember
that children learn the most important lessons on how to care for others at home.
Support your local shelter – donate, volunteer, adopt. We usually have approximately 350 cats and dogs we are responsible for at any given time. Some are in foster
care, but the majority of these pets are in our shelter or our mall stores.
Teach other people about the fate of homeless animals — many people would help
if they knew about it. The SPCA of Brevard is a true “no-kill” shelter. We do not euthanize for space or give any of our animals to the County shelters— we take animals
from the County and keep them till they are adopted.
If you see any animal abuse, report it to the authorities. Many counties in this
country are enforcing animal cruelty laws with jail time, fines and community
service. It has been proven that people who abuse animals, will abuse children and
spouses next.
I want to wish everyone a great holiday season. Please visit our Adoption Centers located
at Sisson Road, Merritt Square Mall, and Melbourne Mall and look around. Donate food,
treats, beds etc. to our furry crew so they will all have a good Christmas, too!

Double your donations
with matching gifts
It’s never too late: Your gifts to SPCA of North Brevard may still be able
to help twice as many homeless pets. Many employers offer matching
gift programs that double or even triple charitable contributions made by
their employees. Check with your human resources department to see if
your company offers a matching gift program.
From the SPCA Thrift Stores
Thrifty Greetings…
Happy holidays and well wishes from all of your friends
here at the Merritt Island SPCA Thrift Store. Stop in this Holi-
day season for that gift that sometimes just can’t be found anywhere
else. For the hard-to-shop-for loved ones, purchase one of our gift
certificates that never expire and are good at either of our thrift store
locations, as well as, for services and products at our clinic or adoption center.
It is through the great support of our community, whether it be
through your patronage, the outpouring of generosity by our donors,
or just the general support and love shown to and for our furry friends,
that our once small organization has grown into the influential and
beneficial voice for homeless animals in Brevard County.
You can help year-round and during this wonderful time of year by
donating those items you may just have laying around that you have
no use for any longer. We offer free donation pickup services and all
donations may be tax deductible. Pay it forward this year and many to
come. When you do, it helps further our goal of stopping unnecessary
euthanizations and providing a forever home for a homeless animal
in Brevard, just as we have for the thousands we have already saved
throughout the years. Thank you all for helping us help the animals!
Have a wonderful holiday season! x

Why You Should Support
the SPCA of Brevard
There are hundreds of
deserving charities in
Brevard County and all
are in need of very scarce
donation dollars. I would
like to make a case for supporting
the SPCA of Brevard here. Nobody
wants to hear “We do great work and
we need your help” when a charity comes knocking on your door
looking for funding. People want to know the specifics of what you
have accomplished with donation dollars and what your future plans
are for donations.
For the last five years the SPCA of Brevard has been the leader in
this county as we progress toward becoming a no-kill community.
There are other groups who have helped and continue to help,
but there is no question that the SPCA has been and continues to
lead. We are a true no-kill shelter — we do not send our hard to

Adult cat adoptions increased almost
800%
adopt animals to the county shelter when we cannot find them a
home and we do not euthanize for behavior issues unless there are
extreme circumstances. We keep trying until we find homes for
these poor souls, and have the track record to show we do this over
and over with hard to adopt dogs and cats. Our company culture
demands that our workers recognize our commitment to animals
and many of our workers are with us for that very reason (certainly
they do not stay for the wages.)
What are the facts? In our fiscal 2009 year we adopted out 873
total pets, 123 adult cats, 235 kittens, 257 dogs, 197 puppies and
61 small and furry pets. In our latest 2014 fiscal year which ended
9/30/15 we adopted out 2164 pets, 958 adult cats, 592 kittens, 431
dogs, 159 puppies and 24 small and furry. Why is this significant? In
2009, nearly 70 percent of adult cats entering our county shelters
were dying there. Adult cats have always been the most difficult
pets to get into new homes and the SPCA has done something
about it, something very significant! In five years, we increased our
adult cat adoptions almost 800 percent! Our county now has a
live release rate of over 70 percent for adult cats and that is directly
attributable to our being able to adopt out these cats successfully.
We embarked on the mission to get to no-kill by transforming the
way our shelter adopts out animals. We moved to open adoptions
based on the expertise and scientific studies conducted by the
ASPCA, PetSmart Charities, Maddie’s Fund and Best Friends. We
also opened Melbourne Mall and Merritt Island Mall Cat Adoption
Centers and moved into a new 11,100 SF Main Adoption Center.
We have done this specifically to help the population most at risk,
adult cats, but we have obviously increased our ability to help the
other pets in our care. Our goal is to see our county get to a no-kill
designation. In order to do that, our county municipal shelters must
achieve a 90 percent Live Release Rate (LRR) and maintain that for
12 consecutive months. The county has achieved 90 percent LRR, or
better, several times this year, but has not been able to stay above
that level. We are getting close to our goal but we need more work
to achieve it and the SPCA of Brevard will continue to lead the way in
this battle. Please consider supporting our organization if you have
a love of animals and want to see unnecessary euthanasia end in our
county shelters. We have the track record to prove that we can make
a difference with your donation dollars and we will continue to make
a big difference in animals’ lives with your support! x

From the SPCA Wellness Clinic
SPCA Clinic Continues to Expand
Serving our community’s pets more efficiently and affordably every day
Over the last 15 years the SPCA of Brevard Wellness Clinic
has expanded tremendously due to the high demand for
low-cost veterinary care. In 2007, we had 7,000 active clients,
and now thanks to lots of hard work from our staff and
support from the community, we have over 30,000 active
clients. The goal of our clinic is to promote economically
sustainable pet ownership and to raise funds to help support
our shelter. Moving forward with this goal in mind, we have
some exciting news for our future!
On November 9, 2015 we opened a walk in vaccination
clinic. Our extremely hard-working support staff will be
offering vaccinations and minor medical services in the
building adjacent to our existing clinic. The goal of the
new facility is to reduce wait times for clients, and increase
our ability to serve the community. Hours of operation are
Monday -Thursday 9am-6pm and Friday 9am-5pm. We will
be closed for staff lunches between 1pm and 2pm each day.
Looking back, we are very thankful for the success we
have had in providing low-cost veterinary care to those who
need it most. Thank you for supporting our clinic with your
patronage. In the years to come, we hope to expand our
abilities to meet the increasing demand for low-cost, fast,
and friendly veterinary care for animals in our community.
We look forward to serving you!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! x

A
Tale
of
re·sil·ience
According to the dictionary, resilience is
defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from
difficulties; toughness.”
Three W
Kitties
By Angie Friers,
Associate Director
6 Winter 2015
e see resilience on
a daily basis at the
SPCA of Brevard, but
three tiny kittens showed us all
what resiliency is really about
when they arrived at our door,
at the beginning of August, with
burns that covered a majority of
their bodies.
A Good Samaritan had been
feeding a litter of kittens at an
empty house for a few weeks, and
then one morning they found the
kittens missing most of their fur.
She rushed the kittens to us and
we went to work doing what we
do best…saving their lives.
Remo, Harding and Matilda (all
names that mean strength and
resilience) were dubbed the Burn
Kittens and were the subject of
a media storm around Central
Florida. Donations poured in
from our amazing supporters and
they received around-the-clock
care by our amazing veterinarian,
Dr. Heather Les, and her team of
techs. Their prognosis wasn’t the
best, but within a few weeks we
all knew we had three fighters
on our hands and switched
from hoping they’d be alright,
to enjoying their antics in the
surgery suite when they were let
out for bandage changes!
The survival chapter of their
story was closed in September
when they were adopted by the
Robinson and Hazlett families.
Witnessing the transformation
from when they first arrived at
the SPCA to the lives they are
living today has been amazing —
they are the absolute definition
of resilience. Never question
an animal’s resilience because
they’ll prove you wrong nine
times out of ten. And those nine
will be the ones that will take
your breath away. x

the lowest prices in the

where clients simply can’t
afford to pay for lifesaving

That is why the SPCA Angel

members of our community
who are most in need of access
to veterinary services for their
pets. Through private contributions
to the Fund, we have been able to
assist several low-income families with
veterinary care needed.
The Angel Fund has helped pets such as Lil
Bit, who came to our clinic at death’s door. She
was septic, had bladder stones that filled her bladder
to the size of a grapefruit, and had a pyometra. Lil Bit’s owners

ooking to make a difference in the life of a shelter dog, but not able
to make a long-term commitment? We are looking for outgoing,
energetic, motivated families that want to make a difference in the
animal community. The Adoption Ambassador Program gives the public
a mission of finding forever families for homeless dogs. We match adult
dogs (preferably) with Foster Families and we provide all amenities.
The Ambassador is given a list of pet-friendly restaurants and venues
so that they can showcase their adoptable dog to the best of their
abilities. The Ambassador is also encouraged to take their new foster dog
to the dog park (since we will be focusing on dogs that are dog-friendly).
Foster Families often want a little more say-so in who their foster dogs
are adopted by and this allows that. Once an Ambassador has fostered
two dogs, they are able to do their own off-site adoptions. We would
like to get to the point where the dogs do not have to come back to the
shelter to be adopted.

Donor Spotlight
By Sarah Hanson
A
ll of our donors are very vital to our cause of
protecting and providing a voice for the homeless
pets that cannot speak for themselves. Some donors
give small donations when they are able, while some
give very generous amounts. Some give in their
wills or by requesting that donations be given to us
rather than flowers for funerals or other events. Other
donors give non-monetary gifts for use at events or
to our thrift stores. Many donors support us on a
monthly or bi-monthly basis, either by sending funds
directly to us, or via payroll deductions. We would
like to thank the following current monthly and bimonthly donors for their faithful on-going support.

Make Their Future Your Legacy
Including the SPCA of
Brevard in your will or
trust is an effective way
to support our mission
of providing care,
protection and a better
future for abused and
abandoned animals.
Many of our current programs
and services have been made
possible by individuals who had
the foresight to include the SPCA
in their estate plans.
Ways You Can Give Through a Will or Trust
• Leave a specific dollar amount or asset to the SPCA.
A legacy to the SPCA may take different forms,
including:
•Designate a percentage of your estate to be given through your
will or living trust.
• An outright gift of cash
• Give only the remainder, or residue, of your estate, or that
which remains after bequests to loved ones have been made.
• Personal property
• Stocks, Bonds or CDs
• Real Estate
