Community Agriculture Winners
at the Topsfield Fair
To the editor:
Dear Editor,
The Friends of the Salisbury Public Library held their first
annual Book and Bake Sale last weekend and it was a huge success!
There were plenty of books, plenty of baked goods and plenty of
community support.
First and foremost I would like to thank the board of the Friends
group for their tremendous effort in a short amount of time to
make this a successful event. Sandy Flaherty, Erica Hixon, Deirdre
Wall, Ted Irvin, Pam Shaw, Christine McLellan, Mary Kirk, Sandy
Soucy and Wendy Pike planned and organized the event from start
to finish. Thanks to the volunteers who moved three hundred
boxes of books, set up tables and kept tables full, and cleaned up
afterwards. They include Ann Carey, Ruthie True, Jan Farrell, Joan
Label, Joe Stucker, Donna Stucker, Paul Kirk, Aaron Soucy, Corey
Anderson, Ted Kyrios, and Ray Pike.
Connie Labrie, Jan Farrell, Mary Shaw, Chalie Kelly, Pro Quo
Books of Springfield: thanks for the donations, and thanks to
everyone who donated their books for our sale. A special thanks to
Linda McElwaney who provided the two beautiful baskets. Also,
our sincere gratitude goes to the Graf Brothers for allowing us to
borrow a container to store the books before the sale. We couldn't
have done it without the support of Liz Pettis and the Council on
Aging for the use of the Hilton Center and the Fire Department
who hold the key to our hearts--and the key to the storage
container!
Finally, the biggest thank you to our littlest volunteers: Gillian
Pike and Maya Hixon, who remind us why we worked so hard in
the first place.
I am writing to tell you about the agricultural winners from around this
area at the 189th Topsfied Fair.
Kelly and Kristen Herrick don’t just live and work on their family’s dairy
farm, they also find time to maintain prize winning vegetable gardens and
raise blue ribbon quality poultry. The fall country fair season provided the
Herrick sisters with an opportunity to showcase their talents.
At the 189th Topsfield Fair, the sisters combined to win over fifty awards
in various agricultural disciplines. Kelly, a 6th grade student at The Pine
Grove School, won 18 ribbons and several trophies in the Open Poultry
Division. Her bantam white silkes took top honors in their class, and
a new fair record of 46 feet was set by her bantam black rose comb hen
earning the silver plate in the Hen Flying Contest. Kelly’s very vocal
bantam rooster, Starburst, also earned the coveted silver plate in the Rooster
Crowing Contest. The Poultry Department at the Topsfield Fair holds one
of the largest shows in the Northeast, encompassing 500 birds in various
classes. This busy sixth grader gets off the school bus each day and heads
toward the barn to take care of her birds, making sure each one is fed,
watered and cleaned before turning to her gardens to check on the progress
of her vegetables. She has inherited her love of birds from her family, as
her mother Kathy also raised exotic birds and poultry as a young girl on her
father’s farm.
In the Open Vegetable Division, Kelly’s success continued with 16 more
prizes: blue ribbons in the pumpkin, sweet corn and eggplant categories,
a second place for her 334 pound squash and a Championship Award
for Best “Two of a Kind” Pumpkins. These award winning squash and
pumpkins will be on display October 26th at the Fall Festival on the
Rowley Town Common from 6pm to 8pm, sponsored by the Pine Grove
P.T.O.
Kristen Herrick showed her versatility by tallying up seven 1st place
honors in: homegrown pumpkins, sweet corn, red tomatoes, green peppers
and egg plant. The recent Curry College graduate devoted most of the
summer to caring for her vegetable gardens. The Vegetable Department at
the Topsfield Fair hosts roughly 800 exhibitors, and the Herricks are just
part of a growing number of children and young adults showing animals,
vegetables, fruit and floral arrangements at the Fair.
The Essex Agricultural Society, a group of farmers wanting to promote
and improve the agricultural interests of farmers in Essex County,
established the Topsfield Fair in 1818 for that purpose. And, the sentiment
continues today with the participation of the Herricks, and several other
Essex County farms and farm-related organizations. The Colby Farm
of Newbury provided the entire Pig Barn display, G & H Garlic Farm
of Salisbury won 10 blue ribbons for their highly regarded home grown
garlic, peppers, tomatoes and egg plant, Iron Moon Farm of Newbury won
numerous awards for their top shelf sweet corn and the Rowley Grange
#204 took top honors for their display paying tribute to Massachusetts
Dairy Farmers.

Terry Kyrios, Director

This fall, the Hale Foundation awarded an unprecendented third
grant to Joppa Flats. This funding will allow Mass Audubon staff to
present ecology-based outdoor programs to students of the Bresnahan
Elementary School (following the recent school system reconfiguration.)
These programs will focus on schoolyard science and will introduce
the entire student body in grades 1 through 3 to various aspects of
the science in their schoolyards. Programs will be held once in the fall
and again in the spring. Each class will receive a 90 minute outdoor
program involving students in hands-on tree and leaf studies, learning
about cloud types, and figuring out how to use the Beaufort Scale to
interpret wind speed.
The funding provided will also allow Joppa Flats Staff and volunteers
to provide teacher training during the winter. The training sessions are
geared toward instilling a sense of awareness and stewardship towards

goes to see April at the club where
she works.
It is his portrayal of the young
Saudi Arabian man, who Dubus said
is just one part of the novel, that’s
concerning him. What you learn
from Dubus is that this man is one
of the 9/11 hijackers.
“I’m terrified about this book
coming out,” said Dubus, who lives
in Newburyport.
But here’s why he wrote it anyway.
He said he couldn’t get the image out
of his head that the 9/11 hijackers
were devout Muslims who would kill
people and kill themselves for their
religion while at the same time going
to a strip club and going to call girls
the night before the attacks.
At first he was going to focus on
what it was like to be the woman
that the hijacker was with before the
attacks. However, he said, he couldn’t
get the man out of his head.
“Once it was clear that he insisted
on being in the story it takes on a life
of its own,” he said.
What he did next was to stop writing and start researching. He said he
read 10 hours a day for four months.
He read as much on the subject as
he could from the 9/11 Commission
Report to The Koran.
He said he “feels like a traitor”
because he drives by house of the one
of the 9/11 victims on his way home
from work and sometimes sees his
widow and her child. The woman was
pregnant at the time when her husband
was killed. He said he is concerned
about the reaction of victims’ families.
However, he said he is not sympathetic to this character, rather, “I
The Town Commo
am emphatic. I feel like I understand
him.”
He went on to say in the question and answer segment that “I am
clearer on who they are and what
they think.”
And he thinks understanding them
will help in dealing with them.
He said the folks marketing his
book are having a tough time trying to figure out how to sell this
book and where to place it. Dubus
described it this way: “I think it’s an
honest novel.”
What he’s most concerned about
is having anyone think he’s trying to
cash in on this.
“9/11 is a huge cultural event
worldwide,” he said. “I don’t want
any part of this book to be (about)
cashing in on this event. I’m just trying to understand them.”

When an opportunity came up
to move to the Masonic Temple
in Amesbury, Brooks jumped on
it "because it had a kitchen. That’s
how the dinner theater began. Back
then dinner theaters were doing
really well so I thought it would
work."
In 1988 they moved to their
current location for two reasons: it
was located on the first floor (the
theater was located on the second
floor in the former location, which
was difficult for some patrons to
access) and the parking was better,
Brooks said.
This location can accommodate
up to 180 audience members who
can come to see just the show or
can enjoy dinner and the show
– it’s your choice. You can catch
a comedy or drama or musical
there. Just last month, for instance
they had "Fiddler on the Roof."
In December, you can see their
annual production of "A Christmas
Carol."
Not only is this building used for
the dinner theater, but the function
room is also used for weddings,
class reunions and meetings.
"Everything we do is to enhance
the theater side," Brooks said.
Putting on productions is costly,
but Brooks said everyone involved
with the theater loves it and
does whatever it takes to make it
succeed. So don’t be surprised if
one night you see your waiter or
waitress acting on the stage during
your next visit to The Playhouse.
"We do it because we love the
theater," said Brooks, an actor
himself who also directs some
productions here. "It’s a big family,"
he said. "It’s an amazing family we
have."

REGIONAL - State Senate
Assistant Minority Leader Bruce
Tarr (R-Gloucester) and State
Representative Harriett Stanley
(D-West Newbury) said today
that the Massachusetts Highway
Department will install a
battery of new signs tomorrow
to address the needs created by
the reconstruction of the Parker
River Bridge on Route 1A. The
signage has been developed
through extensive discussion
between Tarr, Stanley, municipal
officials and Mass Highway.
A total of 28 new signs will be
installed in order to guide traffic
more effectively away from
closed or inappropriate routes
and toward area businesses
which remain open to local
customers and those visiting
the region. The signs will be
installed in both Rowley and
Newbury, with a summary
description attached.
“These signs respond to
a number of requests from
citizens and local officials, and
should contribute substantially
to reducing the early problems
associated with the bridge
closure,” said Tarr
Stanley added that “the
signs are welcomed as part
of the solution, but the real
task is to accelerate the bridge
construction period.”
Tarr and Stanley said they
are continuing to work with
those affected by the bridge
closure, and remain open to
suggestions to further improve
the situation.

Block Those Annoying Telemarketer Calls
If you have trouble getting to the
phone, only to discover when you
finally do get there that it's someone
wanting to sell you something, the
telemarketer block might just what
you need.
In 2003, the Federal Trade
Commission started the National Do
Not Call registry, which allowed us to
block our telephone numbers from
telemarketers. The program ran for
five years, which means that next year
our numbers will be up for grabs again
-- unless we sign up once more.
If you want to block your calls to
telemarketers or renew the block you

10.Costumes should be flame
retardant and the eyes on masks
should permit clear peripheral
vision.
11. All props such as swords,
knives or pitchforks should be
smoothed at the edges.
12. Be watchful of streamers,
flowing crepe paper or cloth too
close to a flame.
PETS:
1.
All pets should be kept
behind a closed doors with food and
water for the duration of the Halloween activities. They can’t always
tell us when they are afraid and the
increased activity at the door is often
unnerving.
2.
Although some pet costumes can be entertaining, the pets
are not always amused and can
become “snippy” to a small hand
approaching. As with children, pet
masks should never inhibit vision.
3.
Pets are particularly vulnerable to mean spirited individuals
on Halloween. All children should
be reminded that cruelty to animals
is not only morally wrong, but it
is against the law. They should be
encouraged to not buckle to peer
pressure.
Cats, and in particular, black cats
are reported to have been abused or
reported missing over the Halloween
period, so be extra vigilant for their
safety.
4.
Chocolate is deadly in any
amount to pets. Be careful that they
do not have access to the candy.
5.
Keep wagging tails away
from lit decorations and pumpkins.
6.
Tin foil and a myriad of
wrappers are dangerous to pet digestive tracts, so be careful what is left
to their “disposal”.

DONATIONS NEEDED
The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society is urgently
seeking food donations, both canned and dry. This is
the height of the kitten season, all our foster homes are
full and so is our shelter!
We are currently caring for almost 100 kittens and
about 60 adults. They eat a great deal of food each day.
We depend on your generosity and support by donating
food or monies for us to purchase food.
Just pick up an extra case of cat food the next time

Depression in Women
By Kenneth L. Noller, MD President,
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
Depression is a common mental
illness that affects one in 10 Americans
each year. Women are twice as likely
to develop depression over the course
of their lifetime than men are.
Depression
is
often
misunderstood—its symptoms can be
overlooked or attributed to a passing
case of “the blues” or another medical
problem, such as a thyroid disorder.
Nearly two-thirds of sufferers do not
get the help they need. But being
depressed goes beyond feeling sad for
a short time or grieving after a loss.
In some women, depression may
be triggered or worsen around the
time of certain reproductive events,
such as menstruation, pregnancy,
loss of a baby, after the birth of a
baby, mastectomy, hysterectomy, and
menopause. Extreme stress or grief,
feeling overwhelmed by responsibility
at work and home, having a stressful
job, money problems, drug and
alcohol use, a history of abuse,
divorce, or the death of a partner are
also causes.
Women who are depressed usually
have several symptoms on a near
daily basis, all day, for at least two
weeks. Symptoms can include:
• Lack of interest in things that
used to be enjoyable
• Feeling sad or “down in the
dumps”
• Restlessness, the inability to sit
still, or feeling very sluggish
• Feelings of worthlessness or
guilt
• A change in appetite or weight
• Thoughts of death or suicide or
attempts at suicide
• Problems concentrating,
thinking, remembering, or making
decisions
• Sleeping too much or having
problems falling or staying asleep
• Lack of energy or always feeling
tired
If you have at least five of these
symptoms (including one of the
first two) you may be depressed.
Additionally, some women may
suffer from headaches or other aches
SPECIAL!
although it can not be a general rule,
laboratories that cost more make a
better product. That better product
which gets put in your mouth is a
direct reflection on the dentist placing
it. Excellent lab work however, does
not make up for less than perfect
clinical skills. I have been in practice
for 12 years. It took me a good 7
years to find a laboratory that meshed
with what I try to accomplish for my
patients…..and believe me, it was
painful getting there.
I heard a rumor that my alma mater
was sending their lab work overseas. I
am very disappointed if that is the case.
When I was in school, we (students)
had to do all the work ourselves. It
definitely gives you a better perspective
on what it takes to make beautiful
teeth. It is truly an art.
Having said this, it is not an
unreasonable request to ask your dentist
if your next crown is getting shipped to
China. What happens if there is a recall
on crowns Made in China? Maybe
you’ll get a free trip to China.

look
for
a dentist?
Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
Yup, you read it right! There have
been pet food recalls, toy recalls,
toothpaste recalls, but no teeth yet.
However, it is possible that some of
the teeth you have in your mouth
(crowns that is) are made in China.
There are an increasing amount of
dentists and dental labs who are
outsourcing the laboratory portion of
crown fabrication to China and other
countries.
Why? Like everything else in the
world, money is the reason. I get
advertisements in the mail daily of
dental laboratories able to make
crowns for ridiculously low prices.
It sounds enticing enough to some
apparently.
Wonder why some dentist’s fees
are higher or lower than others for
this service? There are actually many
factors that go into the creation of a
fee for a procedure that requires a
laboratory expense. The patient never
sees the laboratory expense in most
cases because it is built into the total
fee. Clinical experience, clinical skill,
office overhead, time required, and
nature of the practice are all things
that go into the creation of a fee.
The cost of the laboratory
procedures also greatly affects the
cost for the dental procedure. Let’s
take crowns for example. I have seen
laboratory expenses advertised as low
as $39 per crown and know of other
dental labs whose fee is greater than
$500. Do you think the dentist who
pays $39 for the crown charges the
patient the same amount as the one
who pays $500? I don’t think so. Is
the $500 crown better than the $39
crown? Probably so.
There are even machines you can
buy that can fabricate crowns while
you wait. Although I am personally
not a fan of this process for many
reasons, it does provide a lower “lab”
cost and save the patient a trip. There
are many choices. It is basically up
to the dentist to decide what he/she
feels is in the best interest of the
patient based on knowledge and skill.
Technology is great but hi-tech is not
always the best.
I can tell you from experience and

WRITER’S GROUP
Join the renowned Salem Mystery
Writers Group as they hold a public
session Saturday night, October 27,
from 7 to 9 pm, at the Rockport Public
Library, Broadway, Rockport. Free and
Open to the Public.
Margaret Press, Susan Oleksiw, Larry
Griffin, William Joyner, John Urban
and Rae Francoeur start things rolling
with short excerpts from their novels
and short stories. See how this group of
skilled, published writers critique and
learn from each other.
If you’d like to participate, bring 350
words of your own work in progress.
After the group has read and discussed
their own work, they’ll invite writers in
attendance to join in. Read and discuss
your own fiction or nonfiction. Or, if
you just want to sit back, relax, and
enjoy the show, you can do that, too.
This unique event is part performance
art, part real thing. Every writer choosing
to participate takes a risk and stands to
benefit at the same time. Those attending
might very well witness, first hand, the
energizing success and crippling anxiety
writers manage.

Was Father of

www.TheTownCommon.com
where he spent most of his time
in recent years while still serving
on NHRA's board of directors,
according to NHRA.com.
Parks was a Kansas native whose
family moved to California when
he was 8. He became active in hot
rodding and built many Model-T
Fords he used both on the street
and in early speed trials on dry
lakebeds at Muroc, just north of
Los Angeles. In 1937, Parks helped
found the Southern California
Timing Association, which held
land-speed record events. He and
friends such as pioneer master
speed-parts designer/engineer Ed
Winfield and "The Camfather" Ed
Iskenderian helped grow the sport,
and Parks served as an SCTA
official until World War II began.
In 1946, following military
service in the South Pacific,
Parks was elected president of the
reorganized SCTA. In 1947, Parks
left a job at General Motors to
assume a new role as the SCTA's
general manager.
It was Parks' idea to produce
America's first Hot Rod Show,
presented by the SCTA in 1948
at the Los Angeles Exposition
Armory. His co-producer was
none other than Robert E. "Pete"
Petersen, the noted racing and
hot-rod magazine publisher, who
also recently passed away.
In 1948, Parks helped copublishers Petersen and Bob
Lindsay with the introduction of
Hot Rod Magazine, which today
is of the world's largest-circulation
auto-enthusiast publications. Parks
was named "Hot Rod" magazine's
first editor, and in 1949, he
organized a marketing campaign
that led to the opening of Utah's
Bonneville Salt Flats for hot-
Page 21
rod speed trials -- a still-thriving
annual activity.
Finally, in 1951, and making use
of Hot Rod Magazine as a conduit
to nationwide readership, Parks
formed the NHRA. In 1963, he
resigned his position as editorial
director for all of Petersen's
automotive magazines to assume
full-time duties as president of
NHRA.
Parks has received hundreds
of awards along the way, and we
dedicate this space to him for
opening the door to a sport that
today thrives in many different
flavors. We'll miss you, Wally, and
thanks for everything.

knew where racing was headed.
"Wally's passing is a sad day in the
world of NHRA and the sport of
drag racing," said Tom Compton,
NHRA president. "Words simply
can't describe the immeasurable
impact Wally has had on the
sport he created and the millions
of people's lives he touched along
the way. The name Wally Parks is
synonymous with drag racing, and
his vision and direction will guide
NHRA for years to come."
I wrote that Parks was a humble
man, and to his last days he never
took the credit he deserved in
helping make racing what it is
today. His pride and joy, The

Wally Parks Was Father of
Modern Drag Racing
I am dedicating this column to
Wally Parks, the founding father
and driving force behind the
formation of the National Hot
Rod Association. Parks passed
away at the age of 94 on Sept. 28.
Thanks to Parks' vision and
goals in a time when "drag racing"
meant juvenile delinquency, and
his unconditional commitment
to the need of safe, sanctioned
racing, he created what today is
the world's largest motorsports
governing body.
Those who had the opportunity
to chat with Wally found a humble,
gentle, yet strong individual who
