FROM THE PASTOR…
Dear Parishioners,
I recently heard that a Gallup Poll conducted over decades showed the following percentages of folks who did not receive any religious instruction as a child:
In the year 1952………………..6%
In the year 1965………………..9%
In the year 1978……………….17%
In the year 1985……………….21%
In the year 2005……………….35%
Basic religious instruction is the planting of the seed of a lifetime of Christian faith. It sets children on the right path for the future. The above statistics suggest that we not only need to send missionaries to the ends of the earth, but especially to the nearby blocks of our very own neighborhood.
The United States itself has become a mission field.
All this is by way of reminding you that we are now registering for our Religious Education program (aka Faith Formation). Sister Christine, our Director of Religious Education, is at the church
doors these Sundays, from about 10:45 am to after the Spanish Mass, to facilitate the sign-up.
If your family has youngsters who should be preparing for First Communion, Confirmation,
etc., please speak to Sister after Sunday Mass. You can also register children on Wednesday and
Thursday afternoons at the rectory office from about 2 pm to 5 pm. For these weekday times, it would
be helpful to make an appointment.
Let’s all do our part and spread the word to families with children who need to be rescued from
inclusion in the above statistics.
Also, if you would like to volunteer to assist Sister as a catechist or aide, please speak with her.
She would deeply welcome your involvement. The program begins September 27th, which we will
mark as Catechetical Sunday here at St. Raphael’s.

St. Raphael Exceeds 139% of Minimum Diocesan Goal!!!!
CHALLENGE GOAL: $630,000 OR 150% OF GOAL
Total secured pledges to date: $583,280
Thanks to the generosity of our families to date, we have secured
pledges for 139% of our parish’s minimum goal for GENERATIONS
OF FAITH!!!! Going forward, ALL additional campaign contributions
will return to the parish to address:
Replacing the church boiler, which is more than 40 years
old.
Repainting the entire interior of the church in preparations
for the 150th Anniversary of the parish.
Undertaking structural and cosmetic improvements to
the Pastoral Center.

AND HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Our parish committee has been reaching out to parishioners to
explain details about the campaign; if you are contacted,
please respond warmly and accept their call as you would a
call from the parish.

Gracias a la generosidad de nuestras familias hasta la fecha ,
hemos conseguido promesas de 139% de la meta mínima de
nuestra parroquia para GENERACIONES DE FE!!!! En el futuro,
TODAS las contribuciones de campaña adicionales volverán a la
parroquia para hacer frente a:
Sustitución de la caldera de la iglesia , que es más de 40
años de edad.
Repintado todo el interior de la iglesia en los preparativos
para el 150 aniversario de la parroquia.
La realización de mejoras estructurales y cosméticos al
Centro Pastoral.

Somos un grupo de danza mexicana folklórica y
estamos buscando nuevos miembros. Nuestra
meta es involucrar a la gente de nuestra parroquia y enseñarles nuestra cultura mexicana.
Aprenderán pasos básicos de bailes regionales y
después los pondremos en práctica en una coreografía. Nos presentaremos en la festividad
anual de la parroquia en honor a nuestra Virgen
de Guadalupe. ¡Esperamos verlos pronto!

The bus will be leaving St. Raphael’s at 9:30am and will
return at approximately 4:30pm. A pre-show lunch will
be served that includes a salad, entrée, and dessert
with coffee or tea. Soft & alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

1. Thanks to all who planned, volunteered at and/or
patronized last Sunday’s Flea Market here. The
parish realized a profit of $1,556 from the event.
One more left for the season: Oct. 4th.
2. Advance notice: the annual Blessing of Animals
will take place on the church steps on Sunday,
October 4th, at 1:30 pm.
3. Next Sunday, there will be a second collection to
help underwrite the expenses associated with
Pope Francis’s trip to the United States. There is
no envelope in the parish packet for this offering.
4. Thanks to the Associated Supermarket on
Greenpoint Avenue for the recent donation
($100) to our Food Pantry.
5. Our Wednesday Golden Age Bingo group has
resumed. The group gathers in the rectory basement at noon. New members always welcome.
6. The UNITED FORTIES CIVIC ASSOCIATION
will meet this Thursday, Sept. 17th, 7:00 pm, at
St. Teresa’s Parish Center (44 St. & 50 Ave.) in
Woodside. Voice your neighborhood concerns.
