team. There is plenty of great weather left so
don’t put your clubs away just yet.
Sorry to cut this short but the weather is so nice
right now I think I’ll go play a few holes myself.
Again, please contact me or any committee member if you have any ideas to make the Club better.

As I sit at my desk to compose this article it is the second day
of Fall. The sun is shining, the weather is fantastic, and we
are headed into the home stretch for 2015. There is however
plenty of time to get out to the Club and participate in a number of different events scheduled between now and the end of
the year. For those of you not going out of town for Fall
break, there is a great Bourbon and Wild Game Dinner featuring the Master Distiller from Wild Turkey, Jimmy Russell
and that same week there is a comedy night featuring Dan
Whitehurst and the musical comedy talent of “Kier”. Later in
the month there is the “Top 24” golf tournament, Witches &
Warlocks Tournament and the Golf Awards Dinner to round
out the golf season. Don’t forget to make your reservation for
the awesome Italian Dinner Buffet on October 23 rd or the
Family Halloween Party on October 30th. The best way to
find the most value for you membership is to be a part of all
that is happening throughout the year so I hope to see you at
some of these great October events.
For any of you that have played our golf course this year, I
hope you found the condition of the fairways to be better than
you expected. While I have not played a single round of golf
this year, I have had many opportunities to be out on the
course and see how well the fairways, both sod and sprig,
have come in. I think Larry and anyone else who knows a
Timothy R. Straley

thing or two about growing grass will tell you that the way the
Zoysia has established itself in such a short period of time is
outstanding. Also with respect to the course, our greens have
been top notch with only a few minor exceptions during the
high summer heat. About the only big issue we need to focus
on for the course is the condition of the bunkers however rest
assured that the Green Committee is working on a plan to
address the bunkers which will be put into place shortly. Thanks to Larry and his excellent crew for making our
course the best it can be. There is still plenty of great golf
weather in the weeks ahead so make it a point to get out and
enjoy the efforts of their hard work.
As October begins with the typical mass migration to Destin
and all points south for Fall break, I hope that everyone
comes back with a great tan and a renewed sense of excitement heading into the holiday season. There are still plenty
of events scheduled between now and the end of the year so
please make sure you make it a point to partake in some of
them. As we begin planning for next year, I welcome all suggestions and ideas you may have for possible new events and
activities so please share them with me. Thanks for all of
your support and I look forward to seeing you at the club
soon!
A Letter Submitted by a Member
One Member’s Voice… Speaking for Many
“I have been a member of our club for almost 50 years. During these years I have seen many challenges occur from moving our club “out to the country”, the construction of our golf course, the clubhouse expansion, the
destruction of our tennis bubble, the recession of 2008, the ice storm of 2009 with the loss of 600+ trees and
last but not least, the loss of our fairways in 2014.
I am confident many members share my sincere expression of appreciation and gratitude to all who met this
challenge with professionalism, financial prudence, leadership, experience, and sincere concern for all members and the future of our great club! It is almost a miracle that the recent challenge of losing our fairways and
the replacement and restoration they received has resulted in one of the finest playing conditions that I have
seen.
Special appreciation should be directed to our past and present boards, Tim Straley, our General Manager,
Larry Hantle, our course superintendent and all of his great team members, Jason Stilley, our golf Professional, and many others. Additionally, these tiring months “strained” our house staff and they too should be recognized for their commitment to hang in there with us.
This miraculous recovery, with its major financial commitment is much more significant when you consider no
assessments were levied against the membership. Many members, both golfers and non-golfers, should also
be recognized for their personal contributions that helped make this project such a success.
In conclusion, I am most grateful and appreciative to all who have given so much to continue the traditions of
the Country Club of Paducah. It is through these efforts we have the status as being one of the premier country clubs, for a community of our size, in this great country!”
A grateful and proud member of The Country Club of Paducah,
Louis Michelson

The Summer has quickly faded out and Fall is here. The
change is in the air. Cool and crisp nights are stirring new
menu ideas and Autumn ingredients are coming to light.
We will be rolling out our new menus, both lunch and dinner in late October. Our dessert menu will quickly follow.
One upcoming event you will want to attend is out Wild
Game & Bourbon dinner on October 8 th. Reservations are
filling quickly for this one. Also, we have our Italian Dinner Buffet on October 23rd. Our pasta action station and
handcrafted pizzas will not disappoint. We have plenty
going on in the month of October and hope to see you all
soon.
Michael Harlow, Executive Chef
I will leave you with a fun fact you may or may not have
known. Natural honey is the only food that has an unlimited shelf life. It will never spoil. Archeologists have
found honey in the tombs of ancient Egyptian pharaohs that
was still edible. How sweet is that?

LOVE what we’ve got in store on October 22 nd with
“Better Than Ever’s” Stacy Allgood and her crafty genius.
The 3rd annual “Wild Game & Bourbon Dinner” is on
Thursday, October 8th, but this year we have a VERY special guest joining us! Jimmy Russell of Wild Turkey is
known in the bourbon community as the “Master Distillers’
Master Distiller”…and if you don’t know why he’s a big
deal, just reach out to some of our Club’s bourbon fanatics
like Mr. George Boland! This year, the ladies are even
invited so they can get a chance to see Mr. Russell on his
farewell tour before retirement. Chef and his staff will be
preparing delicious hors d’ oeuvres and a multi-course plated meal made entirely of wild game…seating will be limited, so be sure to make your reservations ASAP!
Finally, we’re putting a NEW SPIN on Family Halloween
this year on Friday, October 30th. Kids, still don your costumes for awesome prizes, but (weather permitting) we will
be hanging out outside downstairs with pumpkin painting, a
chili dinner, crafts, and…A HAYRIDE!
Check out our included flyers for details, but as always,
please contact me for reservations via phone, email, or our

Fall time is officially here, day light is getting shorter and
shorter, but the weather is perfect for golf!
The grounds crew are working hard to make sure the golf
course is in great condition for the membership. The fairways are still is excellent condition, but with day light
getting shorter the Zoysia grass will begin preparation for
the winter months.
In order to sustain top quality course conditions we ask
that all members respect the new golf cart rules. The golf
cart rules state that golf carts should enter and exit the
cart paths at 90° to your ball. After hitting your shot, return to the cart path at 90° or proceed thru the fairway to
your next shot. Please return to the cart path at 90° prior
to reaching the green at about 40 yards.
Reminder! Immediate family members of any member
with golfing privileges will be allowed to play golf with
the member, at a reduced cost for cart and greens fee as
established by the Board of Directors. If the immediate
family members resides within a 50 mile radius they will
only be allowed to play 3 rounds per year at this rate and
for those that reside beyond 50 miles will be unlimited in
the number of rounds they are allowed to play.
As the golf season is winding down, we are making room
in the Golf Shop for new apparel. Please come visit us in

Summer has ended and autumn has arrived (even a little early)
and I hope you have been taking advantage of the beautiful
weather and enjoying your golf course. Those of you who
have played have been very complementary of the conditions.
Because September had several outings with outside guests, I
have also heard many nice comments from non-members who
have played. The staff is always appreciative of feedback and
we thank you for it.
and herbicide and fungicide treatment to prepare it for winter
dormancy. The process of seeding the rough is underway and
will occupy much of the month. As the seed begins to grow it
will receive fertilizer to help it along. This year we are borrowing a slit seeder to use in non-tree areas which should give
better results. Although it is really dry, the irrigation system
coupled with the shorter and cooler days should allow for
good germination.
Because the greens responded very well to the early September aeration, I have decided not do it again this year. The
seeding done with aeration was successful and staff is continuing to spot seed bad areas. Nutrients are still being added and
topdressing will continue throughout the month. The new E
Flex greens mowers that were purchased in late summer and
made their debut at Men’s Member-Guest, are delivering a
superior cut and with the great weather, the greens are playing
wonderfully. The aeration program will be tweaked for next
year using lessons learned this summer and will include using
3/8” tines several times, ¼” tines a couple of times, and using
the spiker more frequently. Of course no one knows what
conditions the weather will provide that may cause changes on
the go.
The green committee decided to remove only the completely
dead trees and that should be nearly accomplished by now. A
company will be grinding the stumps and most of them will
receive seed. Tree trimming will resume after the rough is
seeded. The last large project of the year will concern bunkers. The board is considering a proposal to renovate our
worst ones with the Better Billy Bunker system. If that project
gets approval and happens, staff will add sand to the remaining
bunkers. If the project does not occur, than all bunkers will be
receiving additional sand.
October is definitely a transition month in golf course operations. Mowing of tees and fairways ceases and that labor is
used to tackle projects and battle the leaves that will be falling.
The tees and fairways will receive a last fertilizer application
Fall is many people’s favorite time of year. The air is usually
cool and crisp, the skies blue and the trees magnificent in color. With less than 3” of rain since July, there is some concern
about the health of plants going into winter. An “El Nino” is
developing and early forecasts for winter are all over the spectrum. Usually wet weather is associated with “El Nino” but
hopefully October will be kind and let staff finish needed work
on the course. Hope to see all of you out on the fairways.
Keep up-to-date with what’s happening on the course
