Swellex Pm24C
– connectable rock bolt
The aim of any mine is to blast and remove as much ore as possible, as
quickly as possible without diluting it with waste rock. One of the methods used to ensure this is long hole rock reinforcement. Atlas Copco
saw an opportunity to improve the productivity of this process and
developed the Swellex connectable rock bolt – a deep hole rock reinforcement system for deep anchoring, fast installation and immediate
rock support.
Deep hole reinforcement
Swellex Pm24C connectable bolt is
an ingenious system. By simply connecting two, three or more specially
adapted Swellex rock bolt segments,
you create a custom-made long rock
bolt. The heart of the system is the patented Swellex connector with a special
thread-design that connects and seals
the bolt while facilitating pressurized
water throughout the segments.
Immediate support
Aimed primarily at the mining industry, Swellex connectable bolts works
equally as well in tunnelling applications. It is ideal as secondary reinforcement in difficult areas; as long
anchors in stopes for dilution control
and where other long anchor systems
have problems with excessive water.
Irrespectively of the length of the bolt,
water is injected under pressure into
the bolt, expanding it and facilitating
immediate support. There’s no waiting
for grouting to set and no mess to clean
up - Swellex connectable bolts offer
immediate rock support.
Quick installation
Recent tests have shown up to fourfold productivity increases compared to
cable bolts, irrespectively whether the
Swellex connectable bolts were manually or semi-mechanically installed.
It is because there is no grouting and
only one team needed to drill and
install Swellex connectable. You simply save time and manpower.
Increased productivity and profitability
With Swellex connectable bolts you
save time on installation, improve
dilution control and advance tunnels
quicker. You also streamline your
crew and minimises the need for extra
equipment. Swellex connectable quite
simply helps you improve your ore
quality and increase your overall productivity – not to mention your financial bottom line.
Peace of mind
With the aid of a simple check, you
can confirm that Swellex connectable
functions correctly. This makes life
easier for the installers and engineers
especially when calculating the bolt
pattern. In fact, once in place, you can
be assured that Swellex connectable
bolts will work efficiently day in and
day out.
We call that peace of mind.

Swellex connectable bolt in detail
Swellex connectable rock bolt consists of three basic components:
A blind segment that guides the bolt
into the hole. It is basically a standard
Swellex rock bolt, with a patented
threaded connector instead of the inflation bushing.
A middle segment with a connector at
both ends. The length and number of
these segments dictates the final full
length of the bolt.
Finally, an inflation segment has a
connector at one end and an inflation
bushing at the other where a Swellex
chuck can be connected. The inflation
segment can be connected to the blind
segment directly.
Thanks to this ingenious three-section concept, there’s always a Swellex connectable
bolt to fit your requirements for rock support.
Quick and easy to install
Swellex connectable bolt is user-friendly. An operator can easily push the bolt
into position and add on each segment.
(There’s also an optional blind segment
equipped with a retainer that helps
stop the bolt from sliding out during
installation). The length of each segment is determined by the height of the
tunnel or the free length available on
machinery used for installation.In fact,
the installation process is so simple that
after a short introduction an operator
can carry out the work on his own. As
a bonus, there’s no grout or grouting
equipment needed or mess to clear up
afterwards.
Expanded by water
The connectable Swellex doesn’t
require special tools. All that’s needed
is access to water and an Atlas Copco
electric, hydraulic or pneumatic
Swellex water pump. Just connect the

water pump to the Swellex chuck, start
the pump and the connectable Swellex
bolt expands into the shape of the hole
and creates instant support. Moreover,
thanks to the patented connector, the
water is distributed rapidly throughout
the bolt segments for perfect installation on the total length.

Check to be sure
Installation control is very easy – just
check the manometer. When pressure reaches 300bar - wait 6 seconds.
If the manometer still reads 300bar,
equilibrium has been reached and the
installation is correct. Swellex connectable bolt is now doing its job properly.
What could be simpler?
At its best in water
It’s not unusual for a mine to suffer from water leakage. It can lead to
problems when using grout - but not
when using Swellex connectable bolts.
Water has no effect on the strength and
efficiency of a Swellex bolt. Moreover,
when there is potentially corrosive
rock, we offer a special bitumen or
plastic covered Swellex connectable
for that extra protection that ensures
longevity.

Swellex quality program
Quality assurance from Atlas Copco
All Atlas Copco Swellex products are
manufactured according to strict ISO
rules. Stringent incoming quality control assures that high quality materials
are used. Extensive quality testing is
performed to assure that the products
are adequate for the Atlas Copco brand.
Each bolt has an alphanumeric code
stamped on the bushing head, making
it traceable through the recorded results
of testing done at each manufacturing
stage. Each and every bolt is tested for
leakage as part of the production process. This unique operation is augmented by destructive expansion tests where
1 bolt in 200 is pressurised to the limit
to ensure that the batch can withstand
a minimum a working pressure of
300 bar. In effect, one sample bolt is
removed at the beginning of each shift
and one when a new batch of steel pro6
files is used. This means that 1% of all
bolts are sacrificed in the name of quality assurance.
We, at Atlas Copco, believe that assuring quality throughout the complete
supply and distribution chains is the
best way of ensuring the highest level
of safety for our customers.

Face plates and wire mesh washers
The Swellex face plates distribute the load
that comes on the bolt head uniformly
into the surrounding rock and are specially designed to support the surface rock
without introducing unfavorable stresses
in the bolts head.
The wire mesh washers are pushed onto
the bushing head of already installed
Swellex rock bolts for installation of wire
mesh or screen.
Plastic coated bolt version
Corrosion protection through plastic or
bitumen coating is available for extra
longevity in high corrosion environments
or for boosted longevity.
