JOHN CABOT UNIVERSITY
THE U.S. LIBERAL ARTS TRADITION
The Bachelor of Arts degree in the American liberal arts tradition
values both breadth of study as well as specialization within a
major field. For breadth of study, students complete proficiency
requirements in English, mathematics, and foreign language,
as well as general distribution requirements in mathematics,
science, social sciences, humanities, and the fine arts. For
specialization, students complete core courses and elective
classes in a major field of study. Students may complement
their major with a minor area of study.
To complete the Bachelor of Arts degree, students must accumulate
120 American credits, the equivalent of 240 European Credit
Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits. Students
normally take five courses per semester and complete their degree
in four years. Students who come from secondary school systems
with13 years of study, or who have advanced credit, e.g., IB, AP,
or A-Levels, may enter with some credits and finish in less than
four years.
John Cabot accepts transfer credits from students who have
already begun university studies elsewhere and who wish to
continue their studies at John Cabot. The University accepts
transfer credits from U.S. regionally accredited universities, and
from universities recognized by the higher education authority of
their countries.

BACHELOR OF ARTS
IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
The Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration is distinguished by its
international emphasis. In keeping with the tradition of American business
education, the program provides students from diverse cultural and
educational backgrounds with a challenging business curriculum in the
context of a dynamic learning environment. Required courses are balanced
between the theoretical and practical.
Small class sizes permit most of the upper-level courses to focus on active
learning through class discussion and teamwork. All courses emphasize the
importance of clear and accurate communication, both written and oral,
and require projects, reports, and/or formal presentations.
The final capstone course, Strategic Management, is taken by students in their
senior year to integrate the principles, concepts, and techniques developed
in earlier core courses. In this course, students examine issues regarding
the strategic management of enterprises competing in a global environment.

economic affairs, as well as concepts related to specific situations
in marketing and management.

HUMANISTIC STUDIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS
IN HUMANISTIC STUDIES
The Bachelor of Arts in Humanistic Studies is a focused, interdisciplinary
program of study that encourages inquiry into the human condition beyond
the confines of a single discipline.
The core curriculum provides a comprehensive introduction to the
extraordinarily rich traditions of the liberal arts within and beyond Western
civilization. The major prepares students to read, study, think, write, and
articulate their ideas and critical thoughts in the traditions of broad life-long
learning, public debate, and thoughtful contributions to the community
inherited from such exemplars as Homer, Socrates, Plato Cicero, Dante,
Petrarch, Thomas Jefferson, Frederick Douglass, and Simone de Beauvoir,
and many other philosophical, historical, literary and religious thinkers.
In both individual courses and the major as a whole, this program takes
special advantage of the unique access John Cabot students have to the
cultural, aesthetic, philosophical, and historical legacy of Rome and the
Mediterranean - the ancient birthplaces and Renaissance progenitors of
our modern humanistic thinking.

BACHELOR OF ARTS
IN ENGLISH LITERATURE
The organized study of literature written in the English language has long
proved its worth as a traditional discipline that exercises the imagination,
encourages intellectual precision, and inculcates a critical appreciation of
humane, liberal values.
The program emphasizes the historical and cultural understanding of the
development of literature in English from the Anglo-Saxon period to the
21st century, in addition to the theory of various literary genres.
Students must not only read texts with great care, but also criticize them
and present the results of their own research in well-written essays.

a student must present in his or her senior year.
Students trained in this discipline are prepared for careers in a variety of

The Bachelor of Arts in Italian Studies is an interdisciplinary degree that combines the
study of literature, history, art, and culture while developing students’ fluency in the
Italian language. The context of an American liberal arts university exposes
students to many fields of study and ways of approaching intellectual problems
related to Italy, while the University’s Italian setting provides a tangible understanding
of the multifaceted realities of Italian culture.
Italian Studies majors accrue the unparalleled benefits of studying in Italy’s centrally
located capital, including the opportunity to travel throughout the country and take
advantage of internships that require a working knowledge of Italian language
and culture. Because of its interdisciplinary nature, the Italian Studies major is
particularly suitable to be combined with other majors such as Communications,
Art History, and Humanistic Studies.
The major offers an excellent background for students who intend to pursue graduate

advantage of its location in a city that is the capital both of a political state
(Italy) and a transnational religious faith (the Catholic Church), while also
hosting countless international organizations, institutions, and diplomatic
organizations.
International Affairs majors have extensive opportunities in Rome
to augment their studies with internships at major United Nations agencies,

BACHELOR OF ARTS
IN COMMUNICATIONS
The Bachelors of Arts in Communications is a rigorous, multi-disciplinary
program designed to give students the analytical, critical, and creative skills
that are fundamental to any career in the information age. The major provides
students with superior oral and written communication skills needed to excel in
today’s increasingly global industry.
John Cabot’s Institute for International
Communications brings together
students and faculty from around
the world to study communications
in the home of Cicero. The Institute
hosts events and lectures, in addition
to invaluable networking opportunities
with prominent journalists and business
professionals.
As technology advances, Communications students must learn to express
themselves through a multitude of technological mediums. In addition to hands-on
web design, social media, photography, and graphic design courses, students
become well-rounded communications professionals through John Cabot’s digital
video production courses.
Students with a B.A. in Communications can go on to careers in such fields
as film and video production, journalism, corporate communications,
politics, law, community organizing, and administration in service, education,
management, and the non-profit sector.
Students may also participate in JCU’s dual degree program with the Università
degli Studi di Milano, allowing them to graduate with both American and Italian
degrees in Communications.

LIVING IN ROME
Neighborhoods in Rome are like small villages within the big city,
each with its own character and life. Students are housed in
various neighborhoods of Rome - Trastevere, near the Vatican,
or up the Gianicolo Hill - all a short walk or bus ride away. Some
students live in shared apartments off-campus, while others live
in the University’s dormitory. All housing comes fully furnished
with a kitchen and basic appliances such as washing machines.
John Cabot has a meal plan which provides meals at our Tiber Cafe.
John Cabot University Housing employs student Resident
Assistants (RAs) who live in University housing. RAs organize
study groups, trips, and dinners along with other social activities,
and provide peer-to-peer support for new students to ease their
integration into the John Cabot community.

EXPLORING ROME AND BEYOND
Living and studying in Rome is a truly unique experience and
appreciated not only by those who come from afar and are in Rome
for the first time, but also by our local Roman students who know
this city as their home. It is a city that belongs to the world.
Rome is also a modern, vibrant city for university students. There
are movie theaters, operas, and open-air rock and jazz concerts.
There are piazzas, cafes, and shopping malls. Numerous cultural
events, lectures, and street performances take place daily.
While all roads lead to Rome, you may also want to travel. Rome
is just a short train or plane ride to some of the most magnificent
historic European cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid,
Berlin, Brussels, and Geneva. And, for the intrepid traveler, the
fascinating cities of Marrakech, Istanbul, Moscow, and Dubai
are within reach.
