ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
Cathy Kennerson
introduced the stellar El Centro high
school seniors who
won the El Centro
Rotary scholarship
awards. The top
scholarship award
for a student from Southwest went to Miguel Sanchez, who is heading to UCLA to study social work a
$750 sholarship also went to Kaveen Patel, who will attend UCSD to study mechanical engineering. The
stop student from Central High went to Bianca Cruz, who will study accounting at SDSU, Christa Oakley
-Havens, who is going to UCLA to study sociology and ultimately medicine; and Brett Bird, who is heading to Master’s College to major in music and biblical studies also received scholarships.
STAR PROGRAM
Rosa Caro, who has chaired El Centro Rotary Club’s participation
in the S.T.A.R. program with the El Centro Elementary School District since 1999, introduced the program
that honored the Rotarians who have been
in the 4th grade classrooms this year inspiring kids. For those
who have not yet
had the pleasure of
participating,
the
program stands for
"Success Through
Accepting Responsibility" and teaches kids to "Stop, Think, Act,
Review". Rosa asked Bob Pletka to introduce the principals, teachers and some students from the four
schools at which Rotarians help teach the program who offered
insight and made presentations. Several students read letters that
shared how much the program meant to them and their classmates and how it has changed the
way they act and view success. They talked about looking forward to having the Rotarians come
to their classrooms to share stories, wisdom and sometimes snacks.
The Rotarians recognized for their participation in the S.T.A.R program at Harding School were;
Julie Oliver, Ed Snively, Sebio Arballo, Eric Freeman, Frank Miranda, Don Thompson, Lanny
Foote and Bill Thomas.
Those participating in the progam at DeAnza were; Edgar Aguliar, Todd Evangelist, George
McFaddin, Bill Plourd, Veronica Henderson, Bobby Brock, Neal Hitch and Emma Jones. The
Rotarians who worked with the Desert Gardens 4th graders were; Bob Barros, Mike Rood, Jeff Sturdevant, Jennifer
Thomason, Rosa Caro, Richard Guttierez, Julie Hamilton, Richard Acosta and Carlos Figari. At Lincoln School, Rotarians recognized were; Dale Johnson, Dr. Pletka, Pastor Ron Griffen, Bob Mapes, Nancy Thornburg, Liz Villalobos and
Bob Hahn. And, sincere apologies to any one whose name was badly misspelled or inadvertently left out.

Les Rogers introduced Steve Lang from Rogers & Rogers. A warm welcome was given to all of our visitors.
President Cyndy presented a certificate to Rudy Rodriguez for his selection by the Rotary Board as the Rotarian of the Month.
Rudy was selected for all he does as The Sergeant of
Arms, which includes helping set up the meetingsm putting everything away after the meetings and collecting
the fines.
Rudy also keeps the badge box up, makes the badges
for our new members and has it ready for the members
weekly.
Rudy does many other things to demonstrate his Service to all of us.
Congratulations Rudy, well deserved!
PLEDGE PRAYER AND SONG
POT
President Cyndy called the meeting to order. Cathy Kennerson pledged, Jeff Sturdevant prayed and Pastor Ron
led the song.
Close, but still no cigar as Wes Blakely won the drawing worth $193, but drew the white chip. The pot has
now grown to $1,786, according to Bill Thomas.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Neal Hitch reported that his son, Lucas, came in second in the highly competitive 4-way Test
Speech Contest finals. Neal reported that the six finalists were all excellent and the experience
was an excellent one for all the contestants.
President Cyndy sent the sign-up sheet around one last time for the Mystery Trip and reminded
everyone to meet at ARC no later than 5:30 and the dress is casual.
Don’t show up at PAL as it will be dark.
Our next meeting will be the MYSTERY TRIP - MAY 24, 2012
Everyone will meet, 5:30pm at ARC, 298 Ross Ave. There will be 2 buses waiting for everyone. Buses will leave ARC promptly at 6:00 pm to destination 6:30-7:00 Cocktails, 7:00-8:00 Dinner
(buffet style), 8:00-9:30 Program, 9:30-bus pick up and return to ARC. The dress is casual.
PERFECT ATTENDANCE HONORED

Hildbrandt, Gabe Contreras, Cliff Caldwell, Ron Griffen, Ed McGrew, Emma Jones, Edgar Aguilar, Bob Barros, Dan
Nuffer, Neal Hitch and David Takata. Not pictured: Wes Blakely, Rosa Caro, Diane Cason, Lanny Foote, Erik Freeman, Edgard Garcia, Phil Heald, Veronica Henderson, Lee Hindman, President Cyndy, Mitch Selking, Jennifer Thomason, and Liz Villalobos. And, most of them also were present to be recognized Thursday. Many of the same individuals also were honored for participating in the S.T.A.R. program.
