We hope you have made some time this winter
season to enjoy one or more of the many fun
winter activities taking place at the lake! We
have had a very challenging season with the
weather this winter, which made it even more
challenging with our natural ice. We’re looking
forward to some exciting events coming up in
February, including our annual Fishing Derby
Saturday February 21st, the BT Outdoor Hockey
Tournament February 23rd – 26th, as well as the
Polar Plunge in March. Be sure to join us as we
never know how long the ice will last!

Green Flag means the lake is open for all activities.
Lake Fees
Arbour Lake annual fees are overdue as of February
1, 2015. If you have not paid your fees yet be sure to
do it soon as interest is accumulating on your overdue
balance at the rate of 18% per annum, compounded
monthly. Your access to the lake is also currently
denied until your fees are paid.
You can pay your fees at the lake office by cheque,
debit, Visa or Mastercard. Visa and Mastercard
payments are subject to a 3.5% convenience
fee. You can also pay your fees at your local bank or
through your online banking by adding Arbour Lake
Residents Association as a payee. You will find your
account number located on your invoice. Lake fees are
mandatory for all residents living in Arbour Lake and
you can’t opt out of paying them.
Ice in February
Hopefully February is full of sunny days with
temperatures just below zero! We can hope for the
best but the weather tends to shift a bit more than
that, especially in Calgary. Please remember there may
be times when we need to temporarily close the ice
for safety or because of unsafe weather conditions and
this can change day to day and even hour to hour.
Use the flag pole as your indicator as to whether the
ice is open or not.
Yellow Flag means there is a partial closure at the lake.
Please call the office for specific details.
Red Flag means there is a full closure at the lake.

What does a Trustee do?
As a Board of Trustees, we are elected to govern the
Calgary Board of Education (CBE) in accordance with the
School Act of Alberta. Our job is to represent, lead and
serve parents, students and all Calgarians in matters of
public education.
WHERE NEW PATIENTS AND WALK-INS ARE WELCOME
Our focus is on students and student achievement. On
behalf of the community, Trustees provide leadership
for the CBE by defining its mission, the results we
want to achieve for students and expectations we
have for how the CBE will operate. We then monitor
actual performance against these expectations. This
monitoring takes place at public board meetings.

Trustees also engage our parents and communities.
We want to ensure we are delivering and maintaining
a school system that reflects local priorities, values and
expectations. Trustees are expected to communicate
the views and decisions of the board back to their
constituents.
Finally, Trustees are advocates for the CBE and its
students. Education is regulated and funded by the
Government of Alberta. Our advocacy work includes
talking to the Minister of Education, MLAs and other
government officials about the needs of our students
and our school system.
Overall, the job of the Board of Trustees is to listen to our
communities; guide the work of the school district; and
approve plans, policies and the annual budget. Trustees
are expected to make decisions that consider the needs
of the entire school system, rather the only representing
the interests of our ward constituents.

Ground-breaking event for Royal Vista Fire Station
The City of Calgary and Calgary Fire Department officially broke ground in January 2015 on the Royal Vista
Multi-Service Facility, with an anticipated opening in
late 2016. Construction will include the new Royal Vista Fire Station 34, replacing the current Royal Oak Fire
House in serving the communities of Royal Vista, Arbour
Lake, Citadel, Nolan Hill, Rocky Ridge and Royal Oak.
In addition to improving emergency services to these
communities, the building will also boast a community
meeting room and space for Animal & Bylaw Services.
How do I report a concern about snow or ice?
Check out road conditions, snow routes, and where
snow is being cleared by visiting calgary.ca/snow and
clicking on the Maps section. If you have a concern
about snow or ice issues for pathways, walkways and
other City property, it’s easy to create a request to resolve it. Just submit in the 311 section of calgary.ca/
snow. You can also download the 311 app and report
concerns on the go.
2014 Citizen Satisfaction Survey Results
In late November of 2014 The City of Calgary released
the results of the annual Citizen Satisfaction Survey.
Perceptions about the quality of life among Ward 2 residents are extremely positive with 94% rating the quality
of life as good, 93% agree I am proud to live in my neighbourhood and finally 92% agree they feel safe walking in
their neighbourhood after dark. Visit calgary.ca/citsat
for the full survey report.

Why: Why do X’s at the end of a letter signify
kisses?
Because: In the Middle Ages, when people were
unable to read or write, documents were often
signed using an X. Kissing the X represented
an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the
document. The X and the kiss eventually
became synonymous.
