FESTIVAL RULES TO LIVE BY
IMPORTANT NUMBERS
For the comfort and safety of all...
• Each person who camps at R&R must have a CAMPING TICKET and must get a wristband before setting
up. Ask staff where to camp. Some areas are off limits.
• The CONCERT GATE opens at 3pm Fri; 11am Sat. &
Sun. Please do not line up before 1pm Fri.; 7am Sat/Sun.
• DAY VISITORS (and any vehicle without a camping
sticker) must leave Ninigret Park by 12:30 each night.
• ACOUSTIC JAMS after midnight are allowed in NonQuiet Camping areas. No sound systems! No amps!
• Shhh! Noise must be kept to a minimum between 10
pm-8 am in Quiet Camping. Kids are sleepin’...
• NO OPEN FIRES. Use grills, hibachis and camp cook
stoves only. No fireworks. No luminaries. Keep safe!
• The Town of Charlestown prohibits the use or display
of ALCOHOL in Ninigret Park. Beer and wine may be
purchased and consumed within the concert area only.
• COOLERS with soft drinks & ready-to-eat foods are
allowed in concert area. NO GLASS, ALCOHOL OR
COOKING DEVICES. We check all bags & coolers.
• “SIT LEFT. STAND RIGHT.” The Festival Stage Concert
Area is divided down the middle: The LEFT SIDE is for
chairs and blankets; The RIGHT SIDE of the Festival
Stage is for standing & dancing.
• SUNSHADES & SUNBRELLAS must be behind the
Sunshade signs. Please do not block the view of others.
• ALL seating & belongings must be removed from the
concert area each night!! Chairs and blankets left in
the concert areas will be located near the festival gate
in the morning. Belongings found Sunday night will go
to lost and found in the Security area for claiming
Monday after 9:00 a.m.
• BIKES are not allowed in Concert Area. Please leave
them in designated bike corral. Use a lock, please.
• NO PETS. Certified documented service animals
only.
• Help us RECYCLE by using our recycling & trash containers. Everyone appreciates your help on this.
• FOLLOW PARK RULES. Do not go beyond any park
barriers. Do not swim, boat or drive if you have been
drinking. Ocean waves can be very dangerous.

tent in the concert area near the entrance. After
midnight contact the Security Office next to the

• LOST CHILD CENTER is located at the First Aid
Tent. We will make announcements from stage to
reunite children and parents asap. Know where
your children are!
• LOST & FOUND is located at the Information Booth
(and at Security if the info booth is closed).
• FOOD VENDORS are open daily. You must use
“Bayou Bucks” to purchase all food & beverage.
“Bayou Bucks” booths (we have two) are located in
the Food and Beverage areas.
• I-C-E is for sale in the Food Court and is delivered
daily throughout the campground.
• HOT SHOWERS Hours of operation will be posted
at Showers & Info Booth. The cost is $3.00.
• DRINKING WATER Spigot is near showers. Please
use for drinking only.

Marc Levitt is a writer/storyteller/radio show host and audio artist living in
Wakefield, RI. He has performed, conducted workshops and given keynote addresses
about writing and school social issues in 55 countries in Europe, South America,
Africa and Asia. His stories are both ‘fictionalized memoirs’ and original folkloric. He
is the Host and co-Executive producer of Action Speaks, Underappreciated 20th
Century Dates that Changed America, an NEH sponsored national radio show and
has produced and directed Stories in Stone, a documentary about the Narragansett
stonewall building tradition. Marc is the author of Corwin Press’ Putting Everyday Life
on the Page as well as a recently completed work on school culture. Marc and fellow

LEN CABRAL is a internationally acclaimed storyteller who has been enchanting
audiences with his storytelling performances since 1976. The great grandson of a
Cape Verdean whaler, Len’s islander ancestry comes alive in his exuberant retelling
of African, Cape Verdean, and Caribbean folktales as well as original stories and
tales from around the world. His has appeared in the US, Ireland, Belgium, Austria,
Holland and Canada. The author of a book for young readers and contributor to several folktale collections, Len also has five recordings featuring a wide range of his
award-winning stories. “Len Cabral’s Storytelling Book” is an excellent resource on
how to begin telling stories with 22 stories from around the world, teaching guides,
storytelling games and an extensive bibliography. www.lencabral.com
The Red-Tide Ramblers are Mike Fischman, Cathy Clasper-Torch and John
Sousa—and together they bring their spirited and interactive folk music to the Family
Stage again this year. For 'kids' of all ages (toddlers to adults) their family show is
energetic, educational and participatory! Join the Red-Tide Ramblers for singing,
music making and fun. Mike Fischman, multi-instrumentalist and radio host of
Bluegrass Breakdown (90.3 WRIU) plays with numerous New England bands and
teaches music in RI. Cathy Clasper-Torch (www.cathyclaspertorch.com) teaches fiddle at the Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland, RI, and performs in R.I. bands.
John Sousa, a licenced massage therapist, plays music with local groups. Paul Dube
often joins them and adds even more FUN to the show! Ay-EEEE!
R&R EQUALS tons oF FAMILY FUN!
The Family Tent on Saturday and Sunday presents award-winning
storytellers, musicians and movies. Visit the Craft Tent next to the
Family Stage where you can make masks and noisemakers for our
Mardi Gras Parades led by the s-s-s-sizzling Hot Tamale Brass
Band. Ninigret Park also has a state-of-the-art playground right
inside the festival gates, very close to the Family Tent. To round out
our family-friendly offerings, head on over to the Mobile Arts Art
Studio Tent and make your very own pottery to take with you.

10th ANNUAL CAJUN KIdS ACADEMY
Can you believe that it’s been ten years already? This free program, directed by Michelle Kaminsky, includes classes in fiddle,
guitar, accordion, mandolin and acoustic bass. Our kid-friendly teachers include Chris Ash, Pam Weeks and Andy Stewart
(fiddle), Jim Joseph (accordion); Mary Jo Slattery, Tim Kness and Martin Groswendt (guitar), Bill Olsen (bass) and Michael
Pattavina (mandolin). Students learn traditional Cajun style music. They’ll wow you Sunday afternoon at the HERITAGE STAGE
as “Les Jeunes Cajuns” (The Young Cajuns) play tunes they have learned in just a few days. You’ll be happy to see, firsthand,
that Cajun Music is alive and well in the hearts of the next generation.
BASIC PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
• Students between the ages of 8 (grade 2) and 17 (grade 12) are eligible for the program.
• Students must bring their own instruments.
• Tuners would be very helpful.
• Students should be able to participate all three days, including Sunday’s concert.
• Beginning fiddle and accordion students should be able to play a D or A scale or be able to play a simple song
such as “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”
• Guitar and mandolin students should know chords D, E, A and G and be able to change from chord to chord.
ACADEMY SCHEDULE: Classes meet in the Picnic Pavilion between the camping area and gate to the concert area.

24th Street Wailers are five
Canadian musicians who originally
met in music school. Their major
influence? The sounds from the

Orleans’ Anders Osborne is a true

“C.J. Chenier attacks the accordion with the tension and drive of
James Brown...creating contemporary, turbo-charged dance
music.” Having been known as
“the heir to the zydeco throne,”
C.J.’s music has always embraced
the traditions of his famous father,
“The King of Zydeco,” Clifton
Chenier. C.J’s earliest musical
influences were eclectic, and his
first instruments were piano, tenor
saxophone and flute. It wasn't
until his 21st birthday, after studying music at Texas Southern
University, that C.J. first performed with his famous father and
the legendary Red Hot Louisiana
Band. After Clifton’s death in
1987, C.J. inherited his dad’s
accordion as well as the band,
taking his father’s music and
building upon it, adding elements
of the music he grew up with and
infusing traditional zydeco with a
contemporary punch, pushing the
music to new and exciting levels.

Award-winning Broadway run,
produced the original cast album,
and oversaw the music for its
smash 2011 premiere in London’s.

We’ve loved Dom Flemons at

roots music group Carolina
Chocolate Drops, and now joined
by Ben Hunter and Joe Seamons,

once again. Dom has been called
the "American Songster," and is
known for pulling from traditions
of old-time folk music to create
new sounds. Having performed
professionally since 2005, he has
played live for over one million
people just within the past three
years. A singer and multi-instrumentalist, Dom plays banjo, guitar, harmonica, fife, bass drum,
snare drum, as well as the more

banjo repertoire includes not only

the Buffalo is known for touring
the country while remaining
fiercely independent and as one

McCracken, Kyle Spark, and Mark

Preston Frank plays real Creole
music. A member of one of the
great zydeco families, accordianist
Preston can trace his musical lineage at least as far back as his fiddle playing great-great-grandfather. Preston is a shining light in
the zydeco world, a link to the traditional Creole sounds of years
gone by, and is considered to be
an important force in the preservation of that music.
elIzABeTh COOK (Fri/Sat)
Elizabeth Cook grew up in rural
Florida where her musician parents met while playing in local
country bars. Known for her clear,
beautiful voice and strong songwriting ability, Elizabeth is a
relentless performer, touring
worldwide, including well over
200 performances at The Grand
Ole Opry. Cook currently hosts
Apron Strings, weekday mornings
on Sirius XM’s Outlaw Country
channel. Her 2010 full length
album, Welder (Thirty One Tigers),
was produced by Don Was
(Rolling Stones, Kris Kristofferson)
and features guest appearances
by Dwight Yoakam, Rodney
Crowell and Buddy Miller.

Banjos and rappers shouldn’t
sound this good together and
blending bluegrass and hip-hop
may not seem a likely recipe for
success. But don’t tell that to
Rench, the mastermind behind
the Emmy-nominated
bluegrass/hip-hop outfit
Gangstagrass. The musical
mashup started in Rench’s head
when he was a break-dancing
grade school kid who also dug his
parents’ favorite country artists. As
an adult, he took some hip hop
tracks recorded in his Brooklyn
studio and experimented with
them, combining the vocal tracks
with samples of bluegrass, blues,
and electronic beats. The result
was a genre-demolishing blitz
called Rench Presents:
Gangstagrass, which soon produced enough internet buzz to
catch the ears of executives at FX
Network who licensed a
Gangstagrass track for their new
western crime series, Justified,
starring Timothy Olyphant and
eventually commissioned the
series’ title song. The rest, as they
say, is history. The show became
an instant hit and Long Hard
Times To Come earned
Gangstagrass an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Main
Title Theme Music. It has opened
every episode of the series since
2010. The 2104 release, Broken
Hearts and Stolen Money (Rench
Audio), is the band’s third album,
proving that the crossroads have
moved north—where the dirt

Primarily known as a jam band,
Leftover Salmon blends bluegrass,
rock, Cajun/Zydeco and country
into one musical extravaganza
that they call "Polyethnic Cajun
Slamgrass.” Looking back over
the past 25 years of rootsy, stringbased music, the impact of
Leftover Salmon is undeniable.
Formed in Boulder at the end of
1989, the Colorado slamgrass pioneers were one of the first bluegrass bands to add drums and
tour rock ‘n’ roll bars, helping
Salmon become a pillar of the jam
band scene and unwitting architects of the jamgrass genre.
Though the lineup would change
through the years, the foundation
of Leftover Salmon was built on
the relationship between cofounders Drew Emmitt (vocals,
guitar, fiddle, mandolin), Vince
Herman (vocals, guitar, washboard), and the late Mark Vann

Jim Lauderdale is a two-time
Grammy Award winning musician
and one of the most respected

Bluegrass, Country and Americana

is in high demand as a player,

Since marrying in 2002, Natalie
MacMaster and Donnell Leahy
have been captivating audiences
all over North America with not
only their exceptional musical
skills, but also their obvious joy in
playing together. Having both
been born into musical families,
Natalie and Donnell entered into
their musical careers naturally.
Hailing from Cape Breton Island,
Natalie received her first fiddle at
the age of nine and her first
recording was released when she
was only 16, launching a career
that has lasted for over 30 years
and has resulted in numerous
awards in both the U.S. and
Canada. Her stage presence, the
elegance with the bow, the intricate technique with the fiddle,
and the embrace of the Cape
Breton tradition have combined to
make her one of the most dynamic performers in Celtic music
today.

since the age of three, Donnell,
the son of a fiddle-playing father
from Ontario and a step-dancing
mother from Cape Breton, has
spent his entire life with a fiddle in

exultant, and high-energy music

The word Matuto is Brazilian slang

and the band Matuto combines
elements of jazz, roots and world

of the northeastern region of that
country, the band features violin,
guitar, accordion, bass, drums,
and various Brazilian percussive
instruments not often seen on the

Appalachian fiddle tunes with a
Brazilian lilt or blues riffs and
funky folkloric rhythms, Matuto
creates a unique and inspired
sound from the heart of New York
City’s diverse musical culture, with

Red Dog Run is a group of veteran musicians and old friends who
have spent most of their lives

roots music, with each member

country, Celtic, Cajun/Creole, and
their own compositions, at clubs,

recognize the members of this
“super group” of Louisiana top

Revelers’ sound is a spicy jambalaya of swamp pop, Cajun, zydeco, country and blues—a powerful
potion of roots music that celebrates the flavor of SW Louisiana.
The band members, who have

Malfecteurs, The Yvette Landry
Band, Lafayette Rhythm Devils,

Hailing from Rhode Island, Sarah
Potenza took her passion for performing and her powerful voice to
Chicago a decade ago where she
formed Sarah & The Tall Boys.
The band spent years on the road
showcasing Potenza’s monster
vocals and her honest reflective
songwriting, but nine years and
three self-penned albums later,
Sarah left the band and made her
way to East Nashville to be a part
of the booming Americana music
scene in her own name. In just
over a year, Potenza has earned a
spot among East Nashville royalty,
performing and touring with the
likes of Todd Snider, Elizabeth
Cook, Jim Lauderdale, Kevin
Gordon and Derek Hoke while
managing to land several coveted
slots, such as a feature performance at the world renowned
Bluebird Café and the globally
broadcast Music City Roots series.
She is currently at work on her
fourth album, co-written with husband Ian Crossman. We welcome
