In writing my New Year’s letter for our newsletter, I thought it was
best to summarize our amazing year! Here are some of our major
highlights showing just how “loud we built” in 2013!
5 new homeowners selected for future homeownership
800 different people volunteered
9,504 hours were given by our volunteers
2,732 donuts consumed by our volunteers
2 staff members attended the Habitat National Conference in
Atlanta, GA
1 new ReStore Manager hired
$17,395 was contributed by our Hearts & Hammer Club
members
$27,595 was raised in our special events
27 tons of scrap metal recycled
2 year anniversary of the ReStore re-opening
$2,500 received and partnered with Thrivent volunteers
2 major universities participated in our Collegiate Challenge over
their Spring Break
13,000 sq ft. of recycled fiberglass insulation donated by Corning
& Ripple Glass
2 Women Build Weekends
1 new website
20 churches participated in St. Joe Serve
1 crystal bowl won as the YWCA Women of Excellence
“Employer of Excellence”.
I think that says it all! Thank you for your support and helping St.
Joseph Habitat for Humanity achieve so many amazing milestones. It
all comes down to one thing…YOU the volunteer, donor, shopper, and
supporter! YOU helped us “Build Loud” in St. Joseph! We had a great
2013 and we look forward to seeing all of you in 2014! I can’t wait to
see what great things can be achieved this year!

55th House Blessing
We were so glad to be able to bless this house before Christmas.
The Berry family was excited to move in their new home. Thank
you to all of our wonderful supporters and volunteers who
helped build the Berry home!
Annual Meeting and Auction
Our Annual Meeting and Auction was held at the Green Acres Ballroom on November 12th. Over 150 people attended the
event and over $7,000 was raised to support the Habitat Mission. We had wonderful food and desserts prepared by Chef
Ralph of Luna’s and the evening was highlighted by our award presentations to community members, volunteers and
businesses.
The award recipients included: Golden Hammer 2013 - Ed Young • ReStore Partner - HomeStyle Furniture & Bedding •
Outstanding Corporate Partner - Bayer Healthcare Animal Health and Suddenlink • Build Loud Award - Johnson Controls,
Inc. • Community Spirit Award - Wal-Mart North Belt, Wal-Mart South Belt and Sam’s Club • Habitat Education Partner Hillyard Technical Center • Supporter of the Year - Richard Nolf • Outstanding Faith Partner - Carnegie Baptist Church •
Building Partner - Yvonne Mayer of Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse
Three outgoing Board Members were also presented with a gift of appreciation: Adam Stein, Cathleen Brown and Larry
Edwards. MJ Clapp received a certificate for her outstanding work on the Board as well as chairing our Events Committee.
Three new Board members that will begin their terms in January 2014 were also voted on and approved: Terry Hall, Lee Ann
Smiley and Amy Swenson.
St. Joseph Habitat for Humanity partners with Bayer Healthcare
Animal Health to build a new home
On November 13-15 we started our first home using Structural Insulated Panels (SIP). These
panels are a unique alternative building technology for the construction of high-tech, energyefficient homes. SIP’s are one of the most airtight and well insulated building systems
available, making them an inherently green product. An airtight SIP home will use less energy
to heat and cool, allow for better control over indoor environmental conditions and reduce
construction waste. The exterior panels come in 8 foot sections and the roof in 20 foot sections.
Each panel goes up one by one and the process really reduces the time it takes to completely
enclose a home.
We have continued our partnership with Bayer Healthcare Animal Health to build our first SIP
home for a very well-deserving Habitat partner family. Bayer provided us with 33 volunteers
over a 3-day period which allowed us to complete the installation of SIP panels for the exterior
walls and roof. Bayer previously have worked with us on four other Habitat projects and we
were happy they volunteered to work on this one as well. Although each of the three days
were very cold, Bayer, our regular volunteer crew and staff were excited to see this home go up
in three days. Usually it would take approximately 6 weeks working three days a week with
our volunteers to complete what we accomplished in just three days. This means our Habitat
partner family will be able to move into their home much earlier than expected due to the
design of the panels.

Cosmic Bowling
Zombie Walk
Our second annual Cosmic Bowling event
sponsored by Sam’s Club was held on October
19th at Olympia Lanes. The theme this year
was “Duck Dynasty” and we raised $840.
Thank you to Sam’s Club for organizing the
event for Habitat and for providing the raffle
prizes. Our third annual Cosmic Bowling event
will be held this spring!
Our first ever Zombie Walk brought together many of the
“un-dead” from our St. Joseph community.
KJo 105.5,
Halloween Express, and the Downtown Partnership sponsored
this fun event for Habitat. Bliss Salon, Edmond Street Parlor
and the Flying Pig Tatoo offered Zombie makeup to complete
the costumes needed to shamble, stumble and ramble up Felix
Street. Over 85 Zombie’s filled the streets on October 26th and
KJo 105.5 provided the music for all of the Zombie’s. We raised
over $2,325! A huge thank you to all of our event sponsors and
participants. See you next October!

One way to support St. Joseph Habitat for
Humanity is to become one of our Hearts &
Hammers Club members. We currently have over
300 Club members who support Habitat in a very
special way. Once a new home is built for a
partner family and we plan our home blessing for
the family, our Club members send in their
donations to help support the building of a new
home for another family. Our Club members are
committed to help provide simple, decent,
affordable homes for low income families in our
community. We are very fortunate to have such
generous and supportive Club members.
Our Hearts & Hammers Club has been in
existence for over 12 years and is made up of
businesses, individuals, churches, and
organizations that are committed to changing
lives, building community and hope in St. Joseph.
If you are interested in learning more about
our Hearts & Hammers Club or are interested in
becoming a member, please contact Patrice at the
Habitat office at 816-279-2552.
