55th Anniversary Celebration
As the provincial campaign “May is Community Living Month” was drawing to a close, it was only fitting
that an anniversary celebration gala held the evening of May 27, 2015 marked the 55th Anniversary of
Community Living Campbellford/Brighton (CLC/B). An organization that has seen significant change
during those 55 years, Community Living’s goal is not only to raise awareness but also to increase
opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities within the Trent Hills, Brighton, Warkworth, Hastings
and Cobourg communities.
Community Living Campbellford/Brighton hosted a Wine & Cheese and Silent Auction with all proceeds
destined for the continuance of providing quality support and services for people with an intellectual
disability throughout the communities of Northumberland County. Immediately following at the Aron
Theatre, guests were entertained by Motivational Humourist Meg Soper whose keynote presentation entitled
“Wit, Fit and Balance…Strategies for Success” shed some comedic light on the stresses of everyday life
using humour and perspective. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Nancy Brown, Executive Director
extended a warm welcome and words of thanks to everyone for their continued support. Congratulatory
greetings were presented by Chris Beesley, Chief Executive Officer of Community Living Ontario and by
Ann Kenney, Vice President of OASIS (Ontario Agencies Supporting Individuals with Special Needs).

Mayoral Proclamations Declare that
“May is Community Living Month”
In preparation of a provincial campaign designed to raise
awareness about Who Community Living is, What they do and
What valuable services they offer to their community,
Mayoral Proclamations were made at April Council Meetings
in the Municipality of Trent Hills and the Municipality of
Brighton to officially declare that “May is Community Living
Month”.
Pictured above are Municipality of Trent Hills Mayor
Hector Macmillan and People First Northumberland
Chairperson Lynne Simpson at an April 2015 Council
Meeting.
“Appetite for Awareness” Continues to Pack Goodness in Every Lunch!
This year’s Appetite for Awareness marked the 7th year of
providing a nutritious brown bag lunch to individuals, schools
and businesses in Campbellford, Warkworth and Brighton.
Made possible by generous contributions from local
businesses, the event also provides the opportunity for
Hillcrest Public School students to learn about volunteering
and community involvement at a young age. The long term
support of Mr. Muldoon and this year’s Grade 5/6 students is
always greatly appreciated. They arrived at 9:30am excited to
assemble lunches and deliver them to participating businesses
within the downtown Campbellford core.
Community participation in this year’s event is at approximately 300 lunches. Purchased for just $6 per
lunch, all proceeds go towards the continuance of providing quality support and services. Community
Living Campbellford/Brighton wishes to extend their thanks to the many volunteers for their behind-thescenes preparation and to the following businesses for their generous contribution and support:
Mike & Lori’s No Frills Brighton, Fisher’s No Frills Campbellford, Sharpe’s Food Market, Dooher’s Bakery, Empire
Cheese Factory, World’s Finest Chocolate Outlet Store, Giant Tiger, Campbellford Wholesale,
Rutherford’s Farm and Roadside Market, Colborne

People First Northumberland Recognized as Official Chapter!
In late April, People First Northumberland were thrilled to receive an official
certificate signed by the President of People First of Ontario recognizing them as a
local Chapter. With their self-advocate group now being People First, they are
affiliated with other People First Chapters throughout Ontario.
Following successful presentations on inclusion at local elementary schools Percy Centennial in Warkworth
and Hillcrest Public in Campbellford, People First Northumberland were hosted by St. Mary’s Elementary
Catholic School in Campbellford. Letters continue to be sent to other schools in the
area to determine their interest in similar presentations.
Some People First Northumberland members attended
the People First Peterborough Chapter Conference and
on May 11, 2015 a group of delegates travelled to
Toronto to attend the annual “Day at the Legislature”.
Since 2000, this event has provided an opportunity for
members and friends of Community Living to meet with
members of the provincial legislature. Co-sponsored by
Community Living Ontario and Community Living
Toronto, the “Day at the Legislature” also provides an
opportunity to celebrate the work that has been done
collectively to create a more inclusive society and to look ahead at the work that
still lays before them.
12th Annual Conference a Huge Success!
A great deal of hard work and many months of preparation laid the groundwork for another successful
People First Northumberland Conference held June 16-18, 2015 at the Best Western and Conference Centre
in Cobourg. Designed to promote information sharing and networking for people, the Conference has
always been well known for its interactive and inspiring speakers. This year proved no different as
attendees enjoyed an exciting line up of keynote speakers and presentations. The Conference opening
remarks and keynote address entitled “To Follow Your Dreams and Inspiring Your Vision” was delivered
by Debbie and Vicky Hillyer, Coordinators of Fishability and Predators Sledge Hockey. Other guest
speakers and educational sessions included, but were not limited to, “Protecting Yourself with Fire Safety”,
“Wills, Estates and Future Planning”, “Financial Rights and Planning”, “Community Safety” and much,
much more.

It has been a busy last few months for people involved with the HELMS
program. The sports and opportunities that have been offered are as
varied as the people participating in
them.
On March 4, 2015, athletes from as far as
Kingston joined our curlers for a friendly
bonspiel at the Brighton Curling Club.
This bonspiel was the culmination of a 6
week program where very generous
volunteers helped people to learn to curl. A
huge thank you to Joe Zimny for his
dedication in ensuring this program could
happen for people.

HELMS continued…
Enjoying the last few days of winter, people participated in going to the Frink Centre in Belleville for
snowshoeing and cross country skiing, curling at the Brighton Curling Club and going on an overnight dog
sledding adventure with Chocpaw Expeditions located on the north west side of Algonquin Park. On March
19-20, 2015 five people stayed at the Northridge Inn where they spent the day dog sledding in the park. Their
trip began with orientation sessions about the dogs, sleds and trails. Following orientation, they harnessed the
dogs and hooked up their teams. The excitement of the dogs was very contagious and when all was set, the
adventure began! They covered 25 to 30 kilometers in one day, with stops for sightseeing and to take
pictures. This trip was described as a once in a lifetime opportunity!!
It is through opportunities like these that people are able to improve their overall health and increase natural
connections. It also allows people the chance to try different sports in the hopes that it may lead to further
opportunities within their communities.
HELMS opportunities are offered year round and should be taken advantage of, even if just to give it a try.

A Story about Friendship from the Quality Enhancement Committee
Recognizing that people need friendships in their lives to grow and have a full and happy life, we’ve been
working hard at encouraging and connecting people with the same interests to spend time together regularly
doing things they enjoy. The Friendship Committee is working on connecting friends through
technology. The first item they have completed is a calendar on the intranet which has been populated with
community events in Port Hope, Cobourg, Brighton, Warkworth, Hastings and Campbellford. Each event is
populated to the dates the event is scheduled with the website address for the event so you can look up
more information. This is a working calendar available to staff via the intranet and the committee would
like to encourage everyone to use it for planning things to do and encourage people to invite their friends to
join them...we all know doing things with our friends is so much more fun than on our own! The Committee
would like to invite all staff to add any event they know about which isn’t already on the calendar, just be
sure to add a website that has all the information or if no website please include the details. The next item
up for the Committee is to populate the ICAN System with people who have consented to be added to this
system. It is an electronic system on our AIMS data base which people who have consented can be added
with their interests. Once people are in the system, they can search out other people with the same interests
and reach out to them to invite them to enjoy the same type of things together. Hopefully they will hit it off
and create a new friendship…stay tuned for more information and training on this system.
We’d like to share a story of how two ladies who didn’t know each other met at an event doing something
they both thoroughly enjoy...dancing. They now have an ongoing friendship - all because of sharing a
common interest. Just think of how many friendships could be made if we knew who had what interests and
invited them to join us…stay tuned as there are more ideas to share.
If you have any suggestions for the Committee, please contact Bev Dunlay, Emily Pomeroy, Sarah Greenly,
Laurie Walker and Lee Kellogg.

A Story about Friendship continued…
Jennifer and Vicky met two years ago at a Christmas
party on the dance floor as both ladies have a
passion for dancing! It started gradually with them
planning to attend dances together and their
friendship blossomed and has grown over
time. Jennifer and Vicky get together at least once a
month to go for lunch and to do some shopping.
They also meet up for various celebrations and
dances whenever they can.
Vicky and Jennifer met up at the People First Northumberland Conference and enjoyed themselves
immensely on the dance floor!
Florida Fun!
Daniel and Scott enjoyed a month long vacation in Florida with their host family Karen and Joanne. They
left at the end of February and returned home during the middle of March.
Birthday celebrations for Scott!
It was something she’d wanted to do for a long time...
On February 27, 2015 Nicole met Shelley, her vacation partner
through Christian Horizons, at Pearson International Airport. From
there, they travelled to Tampa, Florida and waited to board the
Brilliance of the Seas (Royal Caribbean Cruise). The cruise
ship made stops in both Key Lime and Cozumel where
Nicole experienced the different cuisine and culture...so
much excitement and so many new experiences!
Nicole is very appreciative for the support she received to
help make this goal a reality!

Northumberland United Way - Day of Caring at the Cobourg Parkview Home
In early March 2015, an application was made to the Northumberland United Way Day of Caring program—
an initiative involving several different Cobourg and area businesses who so generously commit their time
and resources to completing work that, due to health or monetary restrictions, would otherwise not get
completed. We learned a few short weeks later that the Parkview Home would be the lucky recipient and on
June 6th, the “Partners in Caring” volunteers arrived to lend a helping hand with Parkview’s lawn and
gardens. The projects usually involve painting, installing, building, gardening, etc.

A HUGE thank you to Northumberland United Way and to the volunteers from

Parkview’s First Family Easter Dinner
This past Easter weekend everyone from the Parkview
Home hosted their first Easter Family Dinner. Preparing
for the dinner took almost a full day of cooking with a
special thank you to Cheyenne the cook! There was ham,
turkey, scalloped potatoes, mashed potatoes and so much
more! A beautiful table was set with fresh tulips when
everyone arrived! The home was full of our families and a
lot of food! A local children's church group has
been bringing us cupcakes the past couple of years and
came to the door with them that day for everyone to enjoy.
We had a great time socializing and spending time with
each other and hope to make this an annual event!

An update from our Human Resources Department
Recruitment
We were pleased to announce that effective April 7, 2015 we added four (4) new members to our Part Time
Outcome Support Facilitator team. Throughout these past few weeks, they received orientation at our homes
in Campbellford, Cobourg and Warkworth.
We are in the process of accepting resumes for Part Time candidates. Employees are reminded that a
conditional Recruitment Referral Incentive of $50.00 is payable to any employee that refers a new candidate.
For more information and to obtain a referral form that must be completed prior to the interview process,
please contact Leslie Steeves, Director of Human Resources.
Training
A few months ago, we reviewed various on line training programs as our previous manual system of training
was no longer efficient. After researching numerous companies, “Surge Learning” came to the forefront as
being the most capable and user friendly system available. Due to the amount of legislated training
requirements through the Ministry of Community and Social Services and the Ministry of Labour, the Surge
Learning system is a cost effective solution for CLC/B. The system will ensure that all employees receive
mandatory training in addition to special interest courses, classes and workshops which may be of interest
and help when supporting people with specific needs and/or health challenges.
