You Make a Difference…
We Make It Easier
Left to Right: Bill Wilkinson, Judy Cumming, Scott Zimbelman, Sandy
Keiswetter (Cozad Entertainment Series), Marlene Geiger (Robert
Henri Museum & Art Gallery), Judy Eggleston, Kevin Gilbert, Kelly
Sudbeck
The Cozad Community Foundation presented $500 matching grants to the Cozad Entertainment Series and
the Robert Henri Museum & Art Gallery.
Judy Eggleston, president of the Cozad Community Foundation, presented a $500 check to Marlene Geiger
from the Robert Henri Museum & Art Gallery. The which will be used towards the June Artist in Residence,
Tom Dimock from Minnesota.
Tom Dimock was born in Omaha, the first of ten children. His father was a dentist who served in the Navy
and his mother was an artist. Tom calls himself a ‘Navy brat’ moving from Wisconsin to California and
beyond. The family finally settled down in Rapid City, South Dakota.
His earliest artistic influence, besides his mother and aunt, was his father’s cousin, a famous Seattle artist.
Following his service in the Navy, he received his BFA from the Art Center in Pasadena. Following
graduation, he worked as a freelance illustrator and continued painting. Later he graduated with an MFA in
Multimedia Design from the University of Minnesota. He then worked full-time as an illustrator and graphic
designer.
He is known for his fine art developed in series-form with diverse themes. He creates scientific and botanical
illustrations through art commissions. His paintings have won awards with his latest show placing him first.
He will be painting and educating the public about his style of art throughout the month of June at the
Henri Museum & Art Gallery.
Scott Zimbelman, treasurer of the Cozad Community Foundation, presented a $500 check to Sandy
Keiswetter, Cozad Entertainment Series representative which will be used to help fund the Alaskan Odyssey
show in November 2015. Alaskan Odyssey is an Alaskan family string instrument band that sings and
performs while scenes from Alaska are played in the background.
Cozad Entertainment series provides four shows each year costing between $4000-$4500 each. The Cozad
Community Foundation will be used for the Alaskan Odyssey Show scheduled in November. The show is
also sponsored by JM’s Gifts and will be performed for the elementary students in Cozad.
6
The Cozad Area Entertainment Series is a non-profit organization that was established in 1983. They provide
live cultural performances, as well as, affordable, quality entertainment. The performances include
instrumental, vocal and dance programs at the Cozad High School that are enjoyed by many in the
surrounding communities. The first performance, ‘A Tribute to Neil Diamond’ by his son, Denny Diamond
will be performed on October 29 with the Alaska String Band to follow on November 10. Robert Sims is
scheduled for March 11, 2016 and Link Union on April 25, 2016. The Cozad Entertainment Series has also
received grants from the Nebraska Arts Council for performances.
Membership to the Cozad Entertainment Series costs $50/person or $110/family and includes tickets to all
four shows for this season. For tickets, contact Sandy Keiswetter at 308-325-2897..
We are very thankful for the Cozad Community Foundation which has become a place for people to make
endowment donations benefitting Cozad.
“It is a great way to leave a legacy within the community for the future of the community you care about.”
shared Judy Eggleston, President of the Cozad Community foundation
Cozad Community Foundation makes it easier to give to community projects and organizations that you feel
are important. Judy put summed the foundation up in the following way: “The foundation brings together
community leaders, residents and friends of Cozad to support the community’s future. Donate to a current
project or leave an endowment legacy for the future of the community you care about."
Cozad Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, offers a broad range of options for
giving include cash, check, online credit card, securities, real estate, life insurance, grain and livestock
inventory, or memorials. Donors can work with Board Members to match gifts with projects. Commitment
to the future success of Cozad does not require great wealth. All gifts have a positive effect on our
community. For more information, contact Judy at (308) 784-2560.

Cozad Honor Guard & VFW Members & Donations Needed
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of Post #890 in Cozad is
currently seeking members and are encouraging younger
veterans to join forces with them. If you have served overseas
and have received service pay for combat hazardous duty for
having served in a combat zone, you can become a member of
the VFW. However, criteria can be different in different
branches of service.
Members from the Gothenburg and Eustis-Farnam posts have
joined the Cozad post due to recent closings of the VFW in
their communities.
Scott Schmidt, Adjutant & Alin Blumanhourst, Commander
The Cozad post is called the Grant Cook Jr. VFW #890 Post in honor of Grant
Cook Jr. of Cozad who was a veteran who died during the bombing of Pearl
Harbor.
Scott Schmidt, adjutant of the Cozad post, shared that deaths of VFW veterans
have been the main reason membership in the VFW has dropped.
He said he he would like to encourage Vietnam and Gulf War veterans to join the
VFW. Vietnam veterans are celebrating their 50th year this year. Scott
contributes the mistreatment of Vietnam veterans as one major reason why they
are reluctant to join the VFW. They would make very beneficial members to our
local VFW chapter. They are also hoping to encourage the Gulf War Veterans to
become members of the VFW.
Grant Cook Jr.
The VFW supports the Honor Guard, whose
membership overlaps with the VFW. A veteran does
not have to be a VFW member to serve on the Honor
Guard. The uniforms, flags and weapons of the Honor
Guard and VFW are stored at the VFW building.
The VFW also provides demilitarized (set up to shoot
blanks only) M-1 rifles for Honor Guard veterans to
use for funeral services. Members of the VFW and
Honor Guard administer the Avenue of Flags at Veterans
Memorial Park, as well as, the Memorial Day and Veteran’s
Day services. The Women’s Auxilliary also helps out with
these events.
8
Should the Cozad post close, the building will go to
the VFW National to be sold and all equipment
would go elsewhere. Insurance and utilities on the
Cozad VFW building costs over $3000/year. The
Cozad VFW post is the only one with it’s own
building which is located at 1319 N St. The Cozad
VFW building is also available for use to the public
to host meetings, wedding receptions, reunions, and
graduations. Donations are accepted for the use of
the building. Renalda Wenberg handles the
scheduling for the building. If you are interested in
using the building for a function or event, you can
contact Renalda at 784-3272.
The Honor Guard and VFW are co-dependent with each other and that is why they are needing more
people to join the VFW; to give them insight on how they can better serve their members.
The VFW Does provide support to the Honor Guard and participate in funerals of vets, administer the
Avenue of Flags ceremony at the park, and help the Auxiliary with the Memorial Day and Veterans Day
services.
Annual dues for VFW members are $35 per year, with life memberships available on a prorated basis
based on a veteran’s age. There is not a big time commitment to be a member of the VFW.
They hold meetings once a month which usually last an hour or less. In an effort to attract more
members and be more inclusive, VFW has chosen to hold their April meeting at the Cozad Elks Club
Monday, May 4 at 7 p.m. The meeting is open to any veterans and their spouses and they will enjoy
supper and a time of fellowship with each other.
The Home Depot awarded the Cozad VFW with a $5,000 grant which was used for a new roof, back
door and windows for the VFW building. Time and labor to install the roof was donated by Roof Pros in
Lexington.
The VFW is tax deductible 501(c)(19) non-profit veterans organization which allows them to go to
congress and lobby for Veterans of Foreign Affairs.
Donations are very welcome and in need. The funeral services they perform for our
local vets are very important and meaningful for vets and their family members but
are not inexpensive to the Honor Guard members who volunteer to conduct them.
They used to receive financial assistance from the state level but that was recently
cut out of the budget. The uniforms alone cost $300 each and it also costs to travel
to Fort McPherson and to other areas the funerals are held.
For more information on the Cozad VFW contact Scott Schmidt at 308-784-3151.
