CAMP COMECA
Located seven miles southwest of Cozad on scenic 300 acres of
beautiful wooded canyon and lake, Camp Comeca continues to bring
adventure, excitement and beauty to young and old alike. Owned by
Great Plains United Methodist Church, their offerings range from
Kids Camps to Quilter Programs, from weddings and reunions to
hunting and fishing camps. Camp Comeca is set in a Christian
environment with workers sanctioned by Safe Gatherings who work
to prevent physical, emotional and sexual abuse against children and
vulnerable adults.
A vision of Rev. Adrian
Edgar (First Church in Cozad) in 1949, who felt the hills
overlooking Midway Lake resembled the Sea of Galilee, Rev. Edgar
was unable to convince others of the life changing benefits of a
camp. One day as he was walking through the old church, he knelt
to pray beseeching God to give him positive signs if a camp was
within the will of God. He got up and went downtown for coffee
where he met Leo Harkness who questioned him about the camp
and offered to help in any way. A few minutes later Wayman May
came in. Rev. Edgar was a very strong Republican and Wayman a
very strong Democrat. Wayman approached Rev. Edgar and said, “If you can possibly accept an idea from the
Democratic Party, I know how we are going to raise money to start the camp. Last week we had a fundraiser
for the party. We charged $5/plate and all the proceeds went to the party. That’s what we are going to do for
this camp.”
Rev. Edgar knew then that God was wanting him to proceed as was evident with his statement, “This wasn’t
my camp or Cozad’s camp. It was God’s camp.”
Their first fundraiser brought in $5000 and a camp was born in 1950.
Taking the first two letter of Cozad Methodist Camp, they came up with the name Comeca. From the
beginning the camp had tremendous support from churches and individuals in the area. Paulsen Inc. poured
all of the concrete in the camp and in the fall of 1994, Lloyd and Katherine Wilson began giving so generously
to Comeca and 5.5 million dollars of renovations and new construction began.
Today the camp offers

those wanting to enjoy the
beautiful setting in maximum
comfort to tent camping for
the more adventurous. A fully
staffed kitchen is also
available and they are well
known for the great food and
buffets that they serve up for
all their groups and camps! For those needing to stay connected, the camp also has wireless internet.

Camp Comeca is not only available for kids camps. They
host many youth groups in the area for activities, events or
overnighters. They are also a very popular spot for
reunions, weddings and parties, however alcohol is not
allowed on the camp grounds. Camp Comeca offers
meeting spaces that can hold anywhere from 10 - 120
people which is perfect for conferences or business
retreats. The large and small conference rooms have been
a favorite meeting place for historical groups, stargazers,
quilter and art groups.
Learning and training programs such as, Leave No Trace,
camping, fishing, and fire-building to name a few are also
popular at the camp.
An indoor pool and hot tub hosts Open Swimming on Mondays
and Wednesdays 6-9PM, Fridays 7-9PM and Saturdays 2-4PM. for
$3 per person. Several groups use the pool several days a week such
as the ladies water aerobic class from Lexington with 20 women
ages 60-90. A Noodle Aerobic class taught by Karen LaBreyer also
meets at the camp pool on Mondays and Wednesdays.
The fullsize gymnasium is set up for basketball, volleyball, and a
variety of other sports and is complete with bleaches and locker
rooms.
Every Friday swim team members from Cozad and Gothenburg
prepare for the summer season at the pool at Comeca.
The camp has a boat ramp on Midway Lake which
is stocked with trout, walleye, bass and more from
Nebraska Game & Parks for the boating and
fishing enthusiast.
Every Wednesday, students from the Eaglecrest
Academy out of Gothenburg journey to Comeca
for swimming, hiking or sledding with sledding
being their favorite activity.
Equestrian classes for beginning, intermediate and
advanced riders will be offered this summer and
since the camp operates by ACA standards, the
instructors will be CHA certified.
In January 432 people made the trip up the hill to
use the facility in one month alone.

Captioning, owned and managed Erin Becker. Clothes Captioning is

including scarves, jewelry, sunglasses, hair accessories and purses. Erin is accepting quality items on

OUR TOWN COZAD
KOLN/KGIN Television out of Lincoln met with around 30 business men and
women in Cozad to share with them their plans to to focus on Cozad as a part of a
special feature called “Our Town”. The Cozad businesses shared information about
the uniqueness of Cozad’s history, as well as, the rare art and information that can
be found in Cozad’s museums, library, schools and other businesses.
Many shared with the 10/11 group how blessed we are in Cozad to have such
tremendous volunteer and non-profit groups and the impact they have had on our
community and surrounding communities. The extraordinary entrepreneurs and
business owners that are thriving in Cozad and the services they offer throughout
the nation and world were also brought up. Our strong agriculture base that
supports our community as well as our educational, health and fitness advantages
were also stressed during the discussion.
“Our Town Cozad” is scheduled to air June 23rd-June 29th, 2014. Each day KOLN/KGIN will show viewers all
over the state the exciting and extraordinary things Cozad has to offer, including feature stories in the
newscasts, weather reports, promotional announcements, an Our Town Cozad web page, a calendar of events,
special advertising opportunities for Cozad businesses and organizations and a 30 minute program devoted
entirely to Cozad.

for pick up mid-February. You can reserve your
tote bag at your favorite participating shop. Bags
are $15.00.
The Nebraska Independent Fabric Shops
organization has once again custom-printed a line
of fabric that will only be available at
participating Shop Hop stores.
As you travel, your stamp card will be marked
along your way. The state has been divided into four regions. Those that visit every store in a region you will be
eligible to receive a $100 gift certificate prize. No purchase is necessary. Even if you only get to one shop, you
are eligible for a drawing.

Spotlight Non-Profit Organization
Cozad Rotary Club
“Service Above Self ” is the motto of Cozad’s Rotary Club which was chartered on February 26, 1927 and this
organization has certainly lived up to their motto! The Charter states: “He profits most who serves best!”
On December 3, 2013, this group of Cozad leaders raised money to provide over 80 dictionaries for the 3rd
grade students in Cozad. Upon delivery of the dictionaries, the group took the time to teach the students the
purpose and usage of their dictionary.
The organization also schedules time to clean the ditches and roads along 24th Street in Cozad. The group not
only picks up the trash, but they also sort and recycle it and provide the garbage bags and trucks to haul it
away.
The Cozad Rotary annually presents the Paul Harris award (founder of Rotary) to a Cozad citizen.
A $1500 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Cozad High School each year.
The Cozad Rotary has also hosted several Foreign Exchange Students, with local residents serving as host
families.
Each year they send Cozad student candidates and counselors to the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy at the
Halsey National Forest.
Cozad companies and corporations benefit greatly from the Rotary International business networking
organization.
The international goal for Rotary is the eradication of Polio around the world. The Cozad chapter provides
monetary funding which is matched by the Bill Gates Foundation. The program has been named “Polio Plus”
and has been a huge success!
The Cozad Rotary has around 24 members who meet every Tuesday at noon at the Cozad Grand Generation
Center. with short informative programs at 3 of the meetings and 1 business meeting a month. They begin each
meeting with members taking the international “Four Way Test.”

2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it bring good will and better friendship?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned
On May 31st, they will be hosting the Annual Walleye Tournament with a dinner taking place on May 30. More
information will be available soon.

firm, based in Lincoln, Nebraska, is conducting “Housing Listening Sessions,” in
Dawson County, to discuss current and future housing needs. Your input will
greatly assist Dawson Area Development (DAD) in completing a Housing Study with
Strategies for Affordable Housing. The Study is funded with a Housing Grant

CAREER BUILDER WORK STUDY PROGRAM
PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH MEANINGFUL CAREER PATH EXPLORATION
Student/Business Partnership 2014-2015
This program connects high school students and employers, providing an opportunity for
them to not only explore career paths but to co-invest in the future of Cozad. Students gain
valuable knowledge and resume building experience while businesses develop leaders and
potential future employees. Successful partnerships will help to build connections for
students that may hope to return to the community after their post-secondary education.
This program will also give those students that will move directly into the workforce some
much needed experience and direction for their future.
Eligible Students are seniors for the 2014-2015 school year and must pass a business aptitude
test and be recommended for the program by a current teacher or administrator.
Eligible Businesses are Cozad businesses that are willing to provide meaningful learning
experiences and mentors that will provide oversight and direction to the students.
(Ideas for students would include: marketing/social media, website management, sales,
scheduling, research, data entry, reception and assembly. These positions are to be more
than menial tasks and should include responsibility and accountability.)
This program is designed to promote growth of our students and a beneficial contribution to
the business in which they work. Please call today to get more information or to register
your business. We would like to successfully place 25 students for the 2014-2015 school year.

2014 Nebraska Museums Association Annual Conference
April 1-2 at Chipper Hall
The Cozad Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee will be hosting the 2014 NMA Conference on
April 1-2.
Charles “Chuck” Schroeder will be the keynote speaker for the event. Schroeder is
the executive director of the University of Nebraska’s Rural Futures Institute. A native
of Palisade, NE, Schroeder is looking forward to working with Nebraskans across the
state and other to help rethink and revitalize rural life. He has strong ties to the
Museum community. Since 2002, Schroeder was the president and executive director of
the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum (Oklahoma City, OK).
Those in attendance will be given a Dawson County Museum & Art Tour, starting in
Cozad, to see the 100th Meridian Museum, the Robert Henri Museum & art in the Wilson Library &
Homestead Bank. Next they will break into groups and carpool to Lexington or Gothenburg to view the
Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles & Dawson County Historical Society the famous Pony Express
Station, Gothenburg Historical Society and the Sod House Museum.
75-100 museum curators are expected to be in attendance at the conference this year.
This will be the perfect opportunity for our Cozad businesses to put their best foot forward and prepare
for these out of town shoppers.
The Cozad Chamber is joining forces with students from CHS to help you in this endeavor. We will be
preparing a video promotional presentation highlighting our retail that will be played at Chipper Hall
during the NMA conference during meals and downtime.
