Rector’s Corner
Dear St Luke’s ~ San Lucas,
For nearly five years I have had the greatest honor of
my profession to work here, with you, in this unique
and special Parish. When I started parish ministry in
February 1994, I was unfamiliar with working in bilingual parishes. In Texas, where I started, the pattern was
separate but equal, fittingly a residual of Jim Crow in
society. Both Latino/Hispanic and Anglo priests discouraged doing both ministries at once, saying that the
cultural and “racial” conflicts were insurmountable. So
when the English part of my first cure, San Francisco
de Assis, went down to eight people, five of which
were myself, Amy and our kids, I threw in the towel. I
gave up cross-cultural work.
I watched other churches with millions of dollars of
diocesan money labor at the single-language, singleculture models and thrive. I worked with others who
clearly did not want “those people” in their congregation, again, both Latino and Anglo. People who knew
me and my multicultural upbringing would have the
audacity or the ignorance to tell me straight up, “Those
people will not fit in our church.” It was a sad and depressing 17 years of ministry at parish and diocesan
level. I did come to learn some truths about assumptions in ministry.
After great disappointment, you called me here. Lo and
behold! A Church that is living “Radical Hospitality”!
You made all the difference to this peripatetic pastor.
Home at last! I have not ceased to learn new things and
new ways of being. I was wrong that our Hispanic congregation could not grow due to demographics. I was
wrong that bilingual services would just drive everyone away. I’m really, very glad I was wrong! I like this
kind of wrong, where my sacred cows are put on the
altar of sacrifice, and we all benefit from the new covenants that we are creating.
So hang on, SL2! 2016 looks to be another
great adventure led by the Holy Spirit!

Por casi diez años he recibido el honor más grande de
mi profesión en servir a ustedes, en esta Parroquia única y especial. Cuando comencé mi ministerio parroquial en febrero de 1994, no conocía trabajar en parroquias bilingües. En Texas, donde comencé, el patrón
fue la de separación, un residuo de las leyes de segregación Jim Crow en la sociedad. Tanto Anglos como
Latinos me amonestaban contra hacer trabajo bilingüe,
que los conflictos culturales y “raciales” no se podían
superar. Cuando comencé mi primera cura, en San
Francisco de Asís, y la misa de inglés bajó a ocho personas incluyendo me a mí, mi esposa y mis tres hijos pequeños, me di por vencido. Abandoné trabajar entre
dos culturas.
Observaba otras iglesias que con millones de dólares
de la diócesis, laborar en campos de una sola cultura y
lengua, y ganar mucho éxito, tanto latino como anglo.
Algunos me decían claramente, con audaz o ignorancia, sabiendo mi trasfondo multicultural y políglota,
que “Aquellos nunca jamás pueden situarse en nuestra
iglesia.” Fueron 17 años de miseria y depresión en la
parroquia y en la diócesis. Aprendía sobre ciertos asuntos en lo que la gente presume.
Después de gran desilusión, ustedes me llamaron acá.
He aquí, mire. Una Iglesia que está viviendo la bienvenida radical. Ustedes me otorgaron la gran diferencia a
este pobre pastor peripatético. ¡Al fin, llegué a casa!
Desde que vine, no he terminado aprender nuevas cosas, nuevas maneras de ser. Estaba yo equivocado que
la congregación hispana nunca crecería debido a la demografía. Estaba en error sobre la posibilidad de misas

bilingües. ¡Estoy sumamente alegre! A mí me gusta
estar equivocado de esta manera. En esta forma las
vacas sagradas se ponen sobre el altar de sacrificio, y
todos beneficiamos de los nuevos pactos que estamos
creando.
Entonces, acomódense, SL2, ¡2016 será otro año de
gran aventura con el liderazgo del Espíritu Santo!

GUARDIÁN MAYOR
Este es mi último reporte como Guardián Mayor. Ha
sido un honor y privilegio servir. He aprendido tremendo cantidad sobre el trabajo excelente en San Lucas – St. Luke´s, y he tenido la ocasión de trabajar con
personas muy buenas. En el año pasado hemos logrado mucho. Entre ellos, un programa musical de
alta calidad, y un programa de Outreach creciente.
Hemos añadido al Cura, Eliacín, y hemos comenzado
desarrollar un sentido de comunidad entre angloparlantes e hispanoparlantes. Hemos echo reparaciones
críticas a nuestro edificio, y abarcado un programa
para hacer la Iglesia más sostenible en el medio ambiente con el cambio de luces a LED. Hay mucho más
que hacer pero al menos hemos comenzado bien. Me
quedo miembro de la Junta para 2016, y yo sé que el
puesto de Guardián Mayor estará en buenas manos.
2016 será un año de plata. ¡Qué Parroquia tan grande
tenemos!

Cada viernes se ofrece las meditaciones del Vía
Crucis al mediodía. Si hay asistencia se puede hacer
bilingüe.
Domingo de Ramos es 20 de marzo, y volveremos
al Altar Alto para el comienzo de la Semana Santa.
El Jueves Santo tendremos misa a las 7 con Lavatorio de Pies.
Viernes Santo, a las se celebra en dos idiomas. No
hay comunión en este Rito.
Espero que todos hagan el sacrificio de asistir todas
misas especiales bilingües.

SENIOR WARDEN’S MESSAGE
This is my last report as Senior Warden. It has been
an honor and privilege to serve. I’ve learned a tremendous amount about the outstanding work going
on at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas, and I’ve had a chance to
work with many amazing people. In this past year
we’ve accomplished a lot. Among other things we
have a vibrant music program and an active and
growing outreach program. We hired our capable
Curate, Eliacin, and we are beginning to develop a
sense of community between the Spanish language
and English language congregations. We made critical repairs to our building and began a program to
make our church more environmentally sustainable
(“green”) with replacement of our lights with LED
bulbs and fixtures. There is still more work to be
done, but we’re off to a good start. I will remain on
the Vestry for 2016, and I know the position of Senior Warden will be in good hands. 2016 is shaping
up to be another sterling year. What a great Parish
we have!

WINTER HOSPITALITY OVERFLOW
This is our 10th year to staff the nightly WHO overflow shelter held at St Paul's Lutheran at 13th and
Franklin St downtown. We need volunteers to take
one shift any night Feb 14-20. Shifts are 6-10:30pm,
10:30pm-3:30am, 3:30- 8:30am. Those who cannot
volunteer for a shift can help by providing gallons of
milk, cans of coffee, snacks or a crock pot of soup
during that St. Valentine's week. Please sign up after

VALLEY HOMESTEAD SHELTER
St. Luke’s has provided one meal each month for
those staying at the Valley Homestead Shelter, a
shelter for homeless families for many years. The

Classes for English as a Second Language (ESL) have
resumed at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas. We have increased
to 3 classes a week, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday from 9:30 AM to 11 AM. Free pre-school
child care. Come join the experience. More volunteers

LENTEN LITURGY CHANGES
On Wednesday, February 10, Lent begins with Ash
Wednesday. We will be celebrating together, bilingual, at 7 PM. Come for your ashes!
We will have the small, plain altar in the front, where
the High Altar currently is, and we will use it for the
season of Lent. I commend to you its simplicity and
humility for the season.
Every Friday at 12:15 PM we will offer prayers of the
Stations of the Cross. If the occasion permits, we
will do it bilingually.
On Palm Sunday, March 20. We will return to the
High Altar for the beginning of Holy Week.
Maundy Thursday, March 24, we will again have
our Agape potluck simple meal starting at 6PM. At
7 PM we will have a bilingual service of Holy Eucharist including foot-washing this year, and stripping of the altar.
Beginning on Thursday nights from 7-8:30 PM, February 11 to April 21 (sk ip p ing Maund y Th ursd ay,
March 24), Saint Luke' s ~ San Lucas will premiere a new
program to help congregations be equipped for better
lives together in our diversity.
SL2 began 2016 by coming together for Epiphany service on January 6, as English speaking and Spanish
speaking members who walk in the same Light of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. Again on January 10, we remembered our baptismal promises to strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being in another bilingual, multicultural celebration. Such events are radical and
prophetic.
The diversity in our community is a gift to be cherished. Our distinct and particular cultural make up
add to the richness of our lives together as the members of the Body of Christ. What we have at SL2 is
small piece of the larger expression of the Universal
(catholic) Church.
Class will be interactive. We use materials from Kaleidoscope Institute, which is led by The Rev. Eric
Law. This material was recently adopted and adapted
to be Diversity-Cultural Competence training for our
Diocese. Those who participate and complete the 10
sessions will receive a certification from our Diocesan
Offices as officially trained.
More information about the series will be available in
the days to come. Join us in this great opportunity for
communal and personal growth toward justice and
the expression of love.

“IN THE SPIRIT OF THE CIRCLE”
Unbelievably we are rolling into Lent on the 10th of
this month: the most reflective period in the liturgical year. The Spirit of the Circle will bring to light
some very emotional and poignant lessons that will
tie Christianity and the plight of our Indigenous
Peoples together. The lessons for Lent this month:
February 14 - The Law & the Ten Commandments,
February 21 - Doctrine of Discover
February 28 - Horton River Smoking Mountains.

PM and the service lasts about forty-five
minutes. February also marks Black History month
and the expansive schedule for the Portland Jazz
Festival.
I hope you have noticed that St. Luke’s-San Lucas is
finally getting the hang of bi-lingual worship. After
two successful Epiphany services in January, we
will be at it again on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 10th at 7
PM, for the imposition of ashes led musically both
by the choir and by the band from the 1 PM Spanish
service. There’s a lot of life and song in our Hispanic community. Come and add your voice.

LEM MINISTRY - NEW LEADERSHIP
Late in 2015, Lew Hampton shared his files and
gave me a quick lesson in how he had managed the
Lector and Eucharistic Minister ministry over the
years. I am thankful for his leadership to this ministry, and even more thankful that he was able to
impart some of his wisdom on me. I have big shoes
to fill, and I look forward to carrying on St. Luke’s
rich tradition of a robust lay ministry program. We
have recently added three new LEM’s (one at 8 am
and two at 10 am), and we are always looking for
new volunteers. LEM’s serve at Wednesday morning services and both Sunday morning services.

REVEREND WILSON
Reverend Mardon D. Wilson became our third rector on September 5, 1886. He was known as an enthusiastic preacher and local community leader. On
October 28, 1886 he conducted two of his 150 baptisms at St. Luke’s, baptizing two children of Captain William S. Patten, the quartermaster at Ft. Vancouver. The Patten family were members of St.
Luke’s. On this day, Rev. Wilson baptized George F.
Patten and newly born Christine Patten.
Four year old George had, according to pictures,
what might be called a pageboy haircut, with bangs
over his forehead, not uncommon at the time for a
four year old boy. According to stories passed
down, Rev. Wilson picked up young Wilson at the
Fort, and took him to the local barber. It seemed he
thought his hair style inappropriate. Gone were the
bangs, but soon there came the astonishment of
young George’s mother. Rev. Wilson was in very
hot water.
Rev. Wilson remained at St. Luke’s for six years,
leaving in 1892 for the Bay Area in California. The
Patten family remained at the Fort and St. Luke’s
until 1889, so one would guess that they resolved
their issue with Rev. Wilson.
How do we know this story? Well, young George
grew up to be an officer in the U.S. Army like his
father and grandfather. He has the great distinction
of being the Grand Uncle of Russ Roseberry, who
has returned to Vancouver and St. Luke’s. Russ has
a wonderful genealogy book on the Patten Family,
which tells the story and shows the four-year old
George before his bangs were cut. The book states
that “Dr. Francis Atkinson, Rector of St. Luke’s
Church in Vancouver” was the one that “fell from
grace” after the haircut. According to our records
Dr. Atkinson was a sponsor for George’s baptism,
not the officiating Rector. So either there was a misreading of the baptism certificate, or the really nefarious one was not our Rector, Rev. Wilson.

Revenues: revenues collected ended the year $964
ahead of our year-end predictions.
Expenses: overall expenses at the end of the 2015
were under budget by $9,385.
We expected to end the year with a positive balance,
but one never knows for sure. This year on December 28, our net was $316. But because a few pledge
payments came in at the very end of December, revenue came in $10,349 under budget. We ended the
year with a balance of $10,349, reversing a recent
trend of negative year-end balances (this is the second year in a row we have ended the year with a
positive balance).
Congratulations to all who have contributed so
much, and so often.
Additional Comments:
The proposed 2016 budget, which the Financial Advisory Committee recommends approval to the vestry, aligns with increased financial resources thanks
to new pledging units and other significant gifts to
the operating budget. These on-going gifts allow us
to: 1) expand our commitment to outreach, 2) creation of new monetary support to the pastoral care
committee, 3) continue supporting our children and
adding a part-time youth coordinator, 4) extra help
in the office with a new part-time bilingual Parish
Administrative assistant/Sunday school position(s),
5) increased help with building maintenance, and 6)

support of a 1.6% salary increase for staff as recommended by the Diocese of Olympia.
Thanks to all who have pledged for 2016. It is not
too late to pledge. Currently we have 116 units
which is two more than in 2015. Some of you have
made full pre-payments which helps us meet our
first quarter expenses without borrowing from savings.
Thank you for your contributions and continue your
financial giving, as you are able, in 2016.

“CHURCHMEN WITHOUT A
CHURCH”
(excerpted from St. Luke’s Lantern, 3/1/1957)
“Quite regularly in parishes throughout the nation,
people make a startling discovery: they don’t belong
to the parish they are attending! Mr. John Doe for
example, moved to Vancouver six years ago. He
was confirmed 30 years ago at St. Timothy’s in
White Bluffs, Vermont. Attending church regularly
in his new hometown, he is suddenly amazed to
discover that he isn’t a Communicant of the church
in Vancouver because he has never asked for a
transfer from St. Timothy’s to St. Luke’s. In fact, he
has never heard of a Letter of Transfer, although this
is the normal means by which the Episcopal Church
keeps her members affiliated with the parish nearest
their home.”
“Or perhaps Mr. Doe does know about letters of
transfer, but he has a sentimental affection for St.
Timothy’s and dear old Dr. Blank, the rector under
whom he was confirmed. It has no t occurred to Mr.
Doe that Dr. Blank retired fifteen years ago, and that
since then two other priests have been rector at St.
Timothy’s. Mr. Doe’s name is still on the list of communicants at St. Timothy’s, but few if any of the
present members know who he is or where he lives.
In other words, at St. Timothy’s back in White
Bluffs, John Doe is just a statistic. “
“Now Mr. Doe, who is a faithful Episcopalian, is
welcome to all the services of the parish he is attending. The services of the rector are his without question. But there will be a time when Mr. Doe will dis-

cover that he does not BELONG to St. Luke’s and
that he is not actually part of the Church in the Diocese of Olympia. He is under no obligation to transfer if he doesn’t want to. But he should know that he
is still a member of a Vermont parish until he does.”

VESTRY SUMMARY -- January 2016
VESTRY NOMINEES: We need five candidates: we
have four. The vestry approved nominees: Stu Hennessy,
John Mathieu, Itami Sandoval and Marlene Perez. Please
let any clergy or Vestry member know if you would like
to lead the parish for three years. Elections will be at the
Annual Parish Meeting, on January 31 after the 10:00 service.
Mike Morrison, Rick Romagosa, and Kreta Saathoff are
retiring from the Vestry. Please remember to thank them
for their service.
2015 BUDGET: I leave most financial information to
other Messenger contributors, but the news that we ended the year more than $10,000 in the black is just too good
not to repeat.
2016 BUDGET: Several important changes, such as new
staff positions, are included this year. Learn more at the
Annual Parish Meeting.
HOMELESS PODS: We have four pods in the carport
area. Their occupants can stay a maximum of 90 days.
RUMMAGE SALE: This annual event, which funds
scholarships for our youth to go to Camp Huston, needs
a leader. Any volunteers?

brought to you by the Order of St. Luke on the topic
of “The Healing Power of Joy!” The keynote speakers
will be Rev. John Rice (OSL Chaplain) and Rev. Josh
Acton (OSL President). There will also be a choice of
three workshops: “Christian Listening”, “Soaking
Prayer”, and “Praying for Others”. At Church of the
Good Shepard, Vancouver WA on Friday February 5
(7 PM to 9 PM), and Saturday, February 6 (9 AM to 4
