RCMA Executive Director Barbara
Mainster has been chosen for regional
honors – and a package of media
attention – by the public television
station based in Fort Myers.
Barbara and 20 other women were
chosen from more than 200 nominees
for the legacy they are leaving in the
area.
The effort was inspired by MAKERS, a
nationwide television project in which the Public
Broadcasting System saluted notable American women.
WGCU, the PBS station in Fort Myers, decided to honor
exceptional women in Southwest Florida who have left
or are leaving a legacy in the arts, business, education,
the environment, community-building/politics or
through activism in social justice issues. Barbara was
selected for Education.
Barbara went to WGCU TV station in December and was
interviewed on camera with the other “Makers”.
Barbara said she was swept up by makeup and hair
professionals as she walked through the door. “It was
so funny being made up like a movie star! Believe me: I
had no idea this was going to happen.”
The writer for Expressions WGCU’s public media
publication asked many questions, one of Barbara’s
answers was, “If I were to describe myself in one word it
would be “passionate.” It’s interesting when people
come to visit RCMA they always pick up on the passion
and warmth of the agency.” That makes me very
happy.
Expressions also writes of Barbara, In her 40 years at
RCMA she has touched thousands of lives, opened child
care centers and schools, but Mainster is fast to give the
credit to the agency’s 1650 staff members.
Barbara said: “If being named a Maker brings attention
to the staff and the work of RCMA, then I’m honored.”

Barbara dijo que ella había sido escobillada rápidamente
por las profesionales del maquillaje y cabello y

trataran como una estrella de cine! Créanme: No tenia
idea de lo que estaba pasando.”

Luzvy Aguilar a parent at

put 2012 behind her. Luzvy
said, “New Year, new start.”
Luzvy, a parent of two Nerly a
5 year-old girl and
Christopher a 2 year-old boy.
Luzvy works full time, at a
nursery in Homestead and is
a single mother sharing a
home with her brother. “For
me alone,” she says, “it’s very hard. I live month to
month.”
This year her situation worsened with the discovery
of bacteria that invaded Christopher’s glands. The
child was cared for through visits to Miami
Children’s Hospital. As the infection started to
recede and Christopher’s prognosis began to
brighten Luzvy had a personal set back.
She was helping a friend with a flat tire and after it
was put on she drove away, skidded on the slick
pavement and crashed into a tree. She ended up in
the hospital for 4 days and got behind on her bills
because of the two tragedies.
RCMA nominated Luzvy as a Hearld Wishbook
candidate. She asked for a bed for her daughter
and a sofa and a tricycle for Christopher and a doll
for Nerly.
Through the Wish book article about Luzvy in the
Miami Herald Newspaper during the Christmas
Holidays, she received the things she asked for.
Luzvy and her family are truly thankful with each
and everyone’s generosity . Each donation received
brightened her and her children’s life!

pavimento y chocó contra un árbol. Ella terminó en
un hospital por cuatro días y se retrasó con sus pagos
debido a esas dos tragedias.
RCMA nominó a Luzvy por el “libro de deseos”
