National Volunteer Week
April 12th through 18th is National
Volunteer Week and we would like to invite
all of our wonderful volunteers who are
available to join us on Thursday, April 16th
for a potluck from 5-6:30p.m. ! The potluck
will be held in our classroom at the east side
of our building featuring an assortment of
treats and baked goods made by volunteers
and employees. National Volunteer Week is
about celebrating service and recognizing
volunteers in our community who help
better non-profit organizations. By
discovering our special skills we can make
a difference in our community! We are
proud and lucky to have individuals from
all walks of life support our organization
and lift up the lives of thousands of
unwanted, neglected, and abused animals.
Spirit of Volunteerism Awards 2015
Lori Pliska
Congratulations to Lori Pliska for the
2015 Spirit of Volunteerism Awards
nomination! Lori has been nominated
for her 16 years of hard work,
dedication, and ongoing love for
animals. Lori has made a tremendous
impact on the adoption rate by
grooming abandoned, unwanted and
abused pets. We are lucky to have
such a caring and dependable individual
making a huge difference in the lives of
our shelter pets! For more information

Get to Know Lori Pliska
Lori started volunteering in January of 1999. She is
now our Grooming Captain and spends at least 25
hours per month grooming mostly dogs. She helps
bathe our adoptable dogs and cats and helps with
those that have severely matted coats or medical
issues with their skin. We can always depend on
Lori, especially when it comes to animals that
require urgent care. As owner of Paws N’ Claws
Grooming Salon, not only does Lori groom dogs and
cats at the shelter at no cost but will also groom at
a very low cost for elderly people and people that
have medical problems. In addition to grooming, Lori
also helps us raise funds for special events. “The
best part about volunteering is making the animals
feel good,” says Lori.
Success Story of the Month
Myles
Meet Myles! He is a
6 year old cat that
came to the shelter
on 10/04/14 as a
stray. Myles was a
very friendly cat here
at the shelter that
loved to get
attention and was an
absolute cuddle bug.
Myles was a very curious cat and loved to
explore his surroundings whenever he got the
chance. He was adopted on 10/13/14 but was
returned 7 weeks later due
to not getting along with
the other pets in the home.
This sweet boy was finally
adopted into his forever
home on 12/28/14. Myles is
featured here snuggled up in
his new home. “Myles is
great! He is very sweet and
well behaved,” says his
adopters. Thank you to
Kaija for adopting Myles and
giving him a loving home!

Join us at the Sioux Falls Arena on April 11th at 6pm
for the Roller Dollz bout against the Harbor City
Roller Dames! The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society
will be the beneficiary of this bout. The Roller Dollz
are a skater owned and operated,
non-profit organization and member of the
Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. They work as a league to empower women and enrich the
community through competitive sport. Tickets to the bout are $12 and are available for purchase at the
Arena Box Office and on Ticketmaster. For more information on the Roller Dollz go to

Meet Melvin! He is a 3 year old
cat that came to the shelter as a
stray in January. He is a very
sweet boy that loves affection.
He will sit in your lap and purr
like a motor when you pet him.
Melvin is very mellow and does
well with strangers and kids of
all ages. He loves to stretch out
and take some quality cat naps.
Melvin is already neutered,
micro-chipped and started on his
vaccinations. Come spend some
time with him today and see if
he could be your new favorite
cuddle buddy!
Meet Mama! She is a 2 year old
Terrier mix that was surrendered
to the shelter. She was left in our
night receiving area with no
information so little known about
Mama’s previous life. She is a
very sweet girl that loves
attention. She is a 83 pound lap
dog and will cuddle up with you if
you let her. She doesn’t like other
animals though and needs to go
to a home where she will be the
only pet. She also needs to go to
a home with no children. Mama
will need a patient owner to help
her work on her basic training.
She is already spayed,
micro-chipped, frontlined and
started on her vaccinations.
