Soil Descriptions
BEAUFORD SERIES - Soil # 310
These wet soils are clay throughout. They typically have A
horizons that are black in the upper part and very dark gray in
the lower part, mottled olive gray B horizons and mottled grayish
brown C horizons.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils have slightly convex
to slightly concave, nearly level (0 to 2 percent) slopes on glacial
lake plains. They formed in 50 inches or more of clayey calcareous lacustrine sediments. Loamy glacial till commonly underlies
the sediments at depths of less than 10 feet. These sediments
are of Late Wisconsin Age. The climate is humid continental
with warm summers and cold winters. Mean annual temperature
ranges from 45 to 50 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation
ranges from 28 to 32 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The main
ones are the very poorly drained Lura soils which formed in similar sediments and are in depressions. A unnamed soil in the very
fine, montmorillonitic family of Aquic Hapludolls is a common
associated on gentle rises. Also, the moderately well and somewhat poorly drained Guckeen and Collinwood soils which are on
higher lying more sloping terrain are associates in some places
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. Surface runoff is slow. Permeability is slow.
GUCKEEN SERIES - Soil # 230
The Guckeen series consists of deep moderately well and somewhat poorly drained soils that formed in a 20 to 40 inch thick
mantle of clayey glacial lacustrine sediments and in underlying
loamy calcareous glacial till on ground moraines or till plains.
These soils have moderate and moderately slow permeability.
They have slopes of 1 to 18 percent. Mean annual precipitation
is about 28 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 48
degrees F.
TYPICAL PEDON: Guckeen silty clay loam with a 2 percent
slightly convex slope on a clayey mantled ground moraine, cultivated field.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils have plane or slightly
convex on nearly level to moderately steep till plains or ground
moraines. Slope gradients are 1 to 18 percent. These soils
formed in a 20 to 40 inch thick mantle of clayey lacustrine sediments and in underlying loamy calcareous glacial till or modified
glacial till. These deposits are Late Wisconsinan in age. Mean
annual temperature is approximately 45 to 52 degrees F, and
mean annual precipitation is approximately 26 to 32 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The main
ones are the well drained Kamrar, the poorly drained Marna, and
the very poorly drained Lura soils. These soils formed in materials similar to that of Guckeen. Kamrar soils are on higher or
more sloping terrain. Marna soils are on adjacent nearly level or
level terrain. Lura soils are in depressions.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well and
somewhat poorly drained. Surface runoff is medium to rapid.
Permeability is slow or moderately slow.
WEBSTER SERIES - Soil # 113
The Webster series consists of very deep, poorly drained, moderately permeable soils formed in glacial till or local alluvium
derived from till on uplands. Slope ranges from 0 to 3 percent.
Mean annual air temperature is about 48 degrees F, and mean
annual precipitation is about 30 inches.
TYPICAL PEDON: Webster silty clay loam on a concave slope
of about 1 percent gradient in a cultivated field.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Webster soils are on relatively
undissected till plains of Wisconsin age. Slopes are nearly plane
to slightly concave and range in gradient from 0 to 3 percent.
Webster soils formed in loamy glacial till of mixed mineralogy
and from local alluvium from such till. Mean annual air temperature is about 45 to 49 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation
is about 28 to 32 inches. Frost free days range from 120 to 180.
Elevation above sea level ranges from 700 to 1400 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are
the competing Canisteo soils and the Clarion, Glencoe, Harps,
Nicollet, Okoboji, and Wacousta soils. Canisteo soils are on similar landscape positions. Clarion and Nicollet soils are the most
common associates and form a drainage sequence with Webster
soils. Clarion and Nicollet soils lack gleyed B horizons and are
on slightly higher elevations. Glencoe soils have mollic epipedons over 24 inches thick. Harps soils are highly calcareous and
are on rims of depressions. Okoboji soils have thicker A horizons
and typically contain less sand in the sola. Wacousta soils have
thinner A horizons and clear or abrupt boundary to the B horizon. Okoboji, Glencoe and Wacousta soils are in depressions.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Webster soils are
poorly drained, and most areas are artificially drained with tile
and open ditches. Runoff is slow. Permeability is moderate. The
seasonal high water table is a depths of 0 to 1 foot from November to July in most years where undrained.
CLARION SERIES - Soil # 102C, 102B
The Clarion series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately
permeable soils formed in glacial till on uplands. Slopes range
from 1 to 9 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 47
degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is about 29 inches.
TYPICAL PEDON: Clarion loam on a convex upland slope of
4 percent gradient - in a cultivated field.
Soil Descriptions
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Clarion soils typically are on
convex slopes in the relatively undissected, gently undulating to
rolling Late Wisconsin till plain. The topography is hilly in some
places. Slopes commonly are short and irregular with gradients
typically from 2 to 5 percent but range from 1 to 9 percent. The
soils formed in calcareous glacial till of the Des Moines Lobe
advance. Mean annual air temperature is 45 to 50 degrees F.
Mean annual precipitation is 27 to 32 inches. Annual frost free
days range from 120 to 180 days. Elevation above sea level ranges
from 700 to 1400 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are
the Nicollet, Omsrud, Storden, and Webster series. Nicollet and
Webster soils, which form a drainage sequence with Clarion soils,
are the most common associates in undulating to gently rolling
landscapes. Omsrud and Storden soils are often associated in
rolling or hilly landscapes and are on the steeper or more strongly
convex slopes. Storden soils do not have a cambic horizon free of
carbonates and Omsrud soils do not have saturation in the lower
part of the profile.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface
runoff is medium. Permeability is moderate. The seasonal high
water table is at depths of 4 to 6 feet during November to July in
most years.
GLENCOE SERIES - Soil # 114,
The Glencoe series consists of very deep, very poorly drained
soils that formed in loamy sediments from glacial till on glacial
moraines. These soils have moderate or moderately slow permeability. Slopes are 0 to 1 percent. Mean annual precipitation is
about 28 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 48 degrees F.
TYPICAL PEDON: Glencoe clay loam with a concave slope
of less than 1 percent in a depression on a ground moraine in
cultivated field.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Glencoe soils typically are in
closed depressions or low gradient swales within the Des Moines
lobe of the Late Wisconsinan glaciation. The Glencoe soils are
formed in loamy alluvial sediments and loamy glacial till. Mean
annual temperature ranges from 45 to 52 degrees F. Mean annual
precipitation ranges from 25 to 32 inches. The frost free days
range from 124 to 172. The elevation above sea level range from
700 to 1600 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are
the Canisteo, Clarion, Harps, Nicollet, and Webster soils. The
well drained Clarion soils are on the sloping uplands. Somewhat
poorly drained Nicollet and the poorly drained Canisteo, Webster,
and Harps soils are on nearly level to gently undulating slopes.
All the above have mollic epipedons less than 24 inches thick.
In addition, the Canisteo and Harps soils contain free carbonates throughout. The Glencoe soils also are associated with the
Hayden and Lester soils and their respective topographic associ-
ates in some places.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained.
Surface runoff is very slow or ponded. Permeability is moderate
or moderately slow.
SHOREWOOD SERIES - Soil # 311
The Shorewood series consists of very deep, moderately well
drained and somewhat poorly drained soils that formed in
a mantle of clayey glacial lacustrine sediments and underlying loamy calcareous till or that formed entirely in lacustrine
sediments. These soils are in glacial lake plains and moraines.
Permeability is moderately slow or slow. Slopes range from 0 to
12 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean
annual temperature is about 47 degrees F.
TYPICAL PEDON: Shorewood silty clay loam with a slightly
convex 3 percent slope in a cultivated field.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Shorewood soils have plane or
slightly convex slopes on glacial lake plains and moraines. Slopes
generally are about 100 to 250 feet in length with gradients of 0
to 12 percent. The Shorewood soils formed in clayey lacustrine
material commonly 30 to 60 inches or more in thickness over
friable loam or clay loam glacial till. In some pedons a silty layer
up to 3 feet thick is between the clayey layer and the underlying
deposits. Mean annual temperature is about 45 to 50 degrees F.
Mean annual precipitation is about 25 to 32 inches. Frost free
days range from 124 to 165. Elevations above sea level range
from 900 to 1200 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Minnetonka, Barbert, and Lura soils which are members of a hydrosequence with Shorewood soils. Poorly drained Minnetonka
soils are on nearby level terrain. Very poorly drained Barbert and
Lura soils are in depressions and swales.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well and
somewhat poorly drained. Surface runoff is medium. Permeability is moderately slow or slow. The perched water table for the
moderately well drained phase is 2.5 to 4.0 April to June, and 1.5
to 2.5 for the moderately wet phase in most years.
TERRIL SERIES - Soil # 94B
The Terril series consists of very deep, moderately well drained,
moderately permeable soils formed in loamy local colluvium/alluvium on foot slopes, alluvial fans, and stream terraces of till plains.
Slope ranges from 0 to 25 percent. Mean annual air temperature
is about 49 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is about 30
inches.
TYPICAL PEDON: Terril loam on a foot slope of about 4
percent in a cropped field.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Terril soils are on nearly plane to

slightly concave foot slopes, toeslopes, alluvial fans and swales,
typically elongate in shape. Slope gradients are mostly between
1 and 9 percent, but some are as much as 25 percent. The soils
formed in loamy local colluvium/alluvium derived from glacial
till of mixed mineralogy. Mean annual air temperature ranges
from 45 to 52 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is 23 to
34 inches. Annual frost free days are 145 to 180 days. Elevation
ranges from 1050 to 1450 feet above mean sea level.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: Associated
soils on till plain upland areas are commonly the Clarion, Kenyon,
Lester, Ostrander, Storden and Ves series. The Colo and Delft
soils are the common associate on lower slopes. Others are the
Biscay, Cylinder, Lawler, Marshan, Wadena, and Zook soils.
Biscay, Cylinder, Lawler, Marshan, and Wadena soils have coarse
textures in the lower part of the series control section. Colo, Delft
and Zook soils are poorly drained.
CANISTEO SERIES - Soil # 86
The Canisteo series consists of very deep, poorly and very poorly
drained soils that formed in calcareous loamy glacial till or in a
mantle of loamy or silty sediments and underlying calcareous
loamy glacial till. These soils are on glacial moraines. They have
moderate permeability. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean
annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean air annual temperature is about 48 degrees F.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well
drained. Surface runoff is medium. Permeability is moderate.
Soil saturation is recognized at depths of 3.5 to 6 feet during
March to June in most years in the moderately wet phase.
TYPICAL PEDON: Canisteo clay loam with a nearly level
slightly convex slope on a ground moraine in a cultivated field.
LURA SERIES - Soil # 211
The Lura series consists of very deep, very poorly drained and
poorly drained soils that formed in clayey glacial lacustrine sediments on glacial lake plains, and ground moraines. These soils
have slow permeability. They have slopes of 0 to 2 percent. Mean
annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 48 degrees F.
TYPICAL PEDON: Lura silty clay with a concave slope of
about 1/4 percent in a depression on a lacustrine-mantled ground
moraine in a cultivated field.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Lura soils primarily are in depressions on glacial lake plains and lacustrine-mantled till plains or
ground moraines, but some are along drainageways. They have
slopes of 0 to 2 percent. These soils formed primarily in clayey lacustrine sediments of Late Wisconsinan Age. Calcareous loam or
clay loam glacial till underlies the lacustrine sediments at depths
ranging from 40 inches to 10 feet or more. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 26 to 32 inches. Mean annual air temperature
ranges from 45 to 52 degrees F. Frost-free days range from 124 to
172. Elevation above sea level ranges from 700 to 1570 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The Beauford,
Collinwood, Guckeen, Marna, and Waldorf soils are the main
ones. The poorly drained Beauford soils contain more clay than
the Lura soils and are associated with them in a few places. The
somewhat poorly drained Collinwood and the poorly drained
Waldorf soils formed in 48 inches or more of lacustrine sediments
and have sola with texture similar to that of the Lura soils. The
somewhat poorly drained Guckeen and the poorly drained Marna
soils formed in a mantle of clayey lacustrine sediments and have

and poorly drained. Surface runoff is slow to ponded. Permeability is slow. An apparent seasonal high water table for the undrained phase is at 1 foot above the surface to 1 foot below at some
time during November to July in most years for the very poorly
drained phase and 1.0 feet to 3 feet for the poorly drained phase.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Canisteo soils have concave
to slightly convex slopes with gradient of 0 to 2 percent in shallow
swales, flats and on rims of depressions. They formed in loamy
glacial till or in a thin, silty mantle and loamy glacial till. Mean
annual air temperature ranges from 45 to 52 degrees F. Mean
annual precipitation ranges from 26 to 33 inches. Annual frost
free days range from 120 to 180. Elevation above sea level ranges
from 700 to 1400 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Clarion, Glencoe, Harps, Nicollet, Okoboji and Webster soils.
These soils are members of a hydrosequence with Canisteo soils.
Well drained Clarion soils have convex slopes and are on higher
lying and more sloping terrain. Very poorly drained Glencoe and
Okoboji soils are in depressions. Poorly drained Harps soils have
a calcic horizon. Somewhat poorly drained Nicollet soils have
slightly concave to slightly convex slopes and are on higher lying
terrain. Poorly drained Webster soils are on adjacent nearly level
slopes.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained and
very poorly drained; runoff is slow or ponded; permeability is
moderate.
The seasonal high water table on the poorly drained phase is at
depths of .5 to 1.5 feet from November to July in most years.
The very poorly drained phase is at depths of +1 to .5 feet from
November to July in most years.
MARNA SERIES - Soil # 110
The Marna series consists of very deep poorly drained soils that
formed in a clayey glacial lacustrine mantle and the underlying calcareous loamy glacial till on lacustrine plains and ground
moraines. These soils have slow permeability. Their slopes range
from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 28

inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 47 degrees F.
TYPICAL PEDON: Marna silty clay with a nearly level slope
on a lacustrine mantled till plain in a cultivated field.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Marna soils have slightly concave
to slightly convex slopes on lake plains and clayey-mantled
ground moraines. Their slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. They
formed primarily in 24 to 40 inches of clayey glacial lacustrine
sediments and calcareous loamy glacial till. The deposits are late
Wisconsinan in age. The climate is humid continental with warm
summers and cold winters. Mean annual air temperature ranges
from 45 to 50 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from
26 to 32 inches. Elevation above sea level ranges from 900 to
1200 feet. Frost-free days range from 124 to 172.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Kamrar, Guckeen, Brownton, and Lura soils which are members
of a hydrosequence with the Marna soils. The well drained Kamrar and the moderately well drained and somewhat poorly drained
Guckeen soils are on backslopes, shoulders and summits. The
poorly drained calcareous Brownton soils are on nearby low rises
and rims of depressions. The very poorly drained Lura soils are in
depressions and swales.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. The
apparent seasonal high water table is at 1 to 2.5 feet at some time
during November to June in most years. Surface runoff is slow.
Permeability is slow.
KLOSSNER SERIES - Soil # 539
The Klossner series consists of very deep, very poorly drained
soils formed in well decomposed organic material 16 to 50 inches
thick overlying loamy deposits on moraines, till plains, lake plains,
outwash plains, flood plains, and hillside seep areas. They have
moderately slow to moderately rapid permeability in the organic
material, and moderate or moderately slow permeability in the
loamy material. Slopes range from 0 to 8 percent. Mean annual
precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual temperature is
about 47 degrees F.
TYPICAL PEDON: Klossner muck - with a 1 percent slope in a
cultivated field.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Klossner soils are in basins that
were formerly lakes or ponds, lake plains, till plains, flood plains,
outwash plains, or moraines. They are also on hillside seep areas
in moraines and sideslopes of river valleys. Slopes range from 0 to
8 percent. The soils on nearby uplands are generally loamy. The
mean annual temperature ranges from 45 to 50 degrees F. The
mean annual precipitation ranges from 24 to 32 inches. Frost
free days range from 110 to 160. Elevations above sea level range
from 800 to 1400 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The main ones
are the Canisteo, Harps, Okoboji, Glencoe, Muskego and Hough-
ton soils. Canisteo and Harps soils are on the rims of depressions.
Glencoe and Okoboji are at the outer edges of the depressions.
Muskego and Houghton soils are in larger depressions.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained.
Surface runoff is very slow or ponded. Permeability is moderately
slow to moderately rapid in the organic layers and moderate or
moderately slow in the loamy material.
NICOLLET SERIES - Soil # L85A
The Nicollet series consists of very deep, moderately well and
somewhat poorly drained soils that formed in calcareous loamy
glacial till on till plains and glacial moraines. These soils have
moderate permeability. Their slopes range from 0 to 5 percent.
Mean annual precipitation is about 28 inches. Mean annual
temperature is about 48 degrees F.
TYPICAL PEDON: Nicollet clay loam on a 2 percent plane
slope in a cultivated field.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Nicollet soils have slightly convex
or plane slopes. They are on till plains, ground moraines, and
terminal moraines. Their slopes range from 0 to 5 percent. They
formed in friable, calcareous loam and clay loam glacial till of
Late Wisconsinan age. The climate is humid continental with
warm summers and cold winters. Mean annual temperature
ranges from 45 to 55 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges
from 26 to 32 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are
the Canisteo, Clarion, Glencoe, Okoboji, Storden, Swanlake, and
Webster soils which are members of a hydrosequence with Nicollet soils. The well drained Clarion, Storden and Swanlake soils
are generally on the more convex slopes and higher in the landscape. Poorly drained Canisteo and Webster soils are on broad
nearly level areas. Very poorly drained Glencoe and Okoboji soils
are in depressions and swales.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well and
somewhat poorly drained. Permeability is moderate. Runoff is
slow.
