suggestions to help managers make the most effective and efficient use of these
“building blocks”.

George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ |
Thursday, December 4th. 7:00 p.m. Lincoln Center.
Nothing says the holidays like a performance
of the illustrious Nutcracker. Be captivated by
the lure of Tchaikovsky’s music, Balanchine’s
choreography, Karinska’s sumptuous costumes,
and Rouben Ter-Arutunian’s magical sets.
George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™, based on
the Alexandre Dumas pere version of E.T.A.
Hoffmann’s tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse
King (1816), demands a full-scale production.
The performance is elaborate and unforgettable. Take the one-ton
Christmas tree, for example, that grows from a height of 12 feet to
40 feet, evoking audible gasps of disbelief from the audience at each
performance. Other notable feats include the comic figure of Mother
Ginger — 85 pounds and nine feet wide, the costume requires
handling by three people once it is lowered by pulley over the dancer’s
head — as well as the continuous flutter of the purest, crystal-shaped
snowflakes (which are swept up and conserved after each performance
for reuse).
While these technical achievements are wonderful fun, it is Balanchine’s
choreography that sustains the ballet through two acts. Act I introduces
the characters — the Stahlbaum children, Marie and Fritz, Herr
Drosselmeier and his Nephew — and also begins the transition from
reality into fantasy with the concluding Snowflake Waltz. Act II offers
the complete transformation. We have entered the “Kingdom of the
Sugarplum Fairy” and there is no turning back.
George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ is one of the most complex
theatrical, staged ballets in the Company’s active repertory. The
popularity of the ballet is immense and it provides an unforgettable
spark to everyone’s holiday season.
$130 per person. Reservations are required by November 20th, 2014,
and become final sale on that date. For reservations please e-mail rsvp@
pennclubny.org or RSVP online.

and dining. The evening’s performance will feature Broadway star Kelli

Do you have a special talent? I’ve been known to be the first wedding
guest on the dance floor and the last to leave.
Where do you like to vacation? Sea Island, Georgia and Cape Cod are
my favorite weekend getaways, but my wife and I love to travel. Up
next on our wish list are Istanbul, the Maldives, and Machu Picchu.
Why did you join the Penn Club? I love meeting new people, and there’s
no better place for doing that than at The Penn Club.
What is your favorite Penn Club dish? The amazing duck flat bread!
If you were a crayon, what color would you be? That’s an easy one —
Royal Blue. (My color used to be Magic Mint, but it was discontinued
in the infamous Crayola color purge of 2003.)

What book are you currently reading? I’m reading Atlas Shrugged for the
third time. (“Who is John Galt,” is one of the best opening lines of
any book I’ve ever read.)
Who’s your favorite person living or dead, real or fictional? Warren
Buffett — one of the greatest investors of all time. I did a lot of
traveling while at Penn, but my highlight was a road trip I took to
Omaha to have a lunch with the Oracle — a lunch well worth the
twelve hundred miles. What’s the last thing you saw on Broadway? Once
How often do you eat out? A lot! There are so many good restaurants to
try, and my wife is a much happier camper when there are no dishes
involved.
What’s hanging above your sofa? A vintage Pan Am poster. I’ve been
obsessed with airplanes and travel ever since I was a kid, thanks to the
amazing stories my great grandfather told me about his voyages from
California to Hong Kong.
How has being a Penn Club member benefitted your life, professionally?
The Penn Club is my favorite place to meet someone for coffee or
lunch, and the staff recently helped me host a great event for my firm’s
CPA partners.
Do you have any advice for new Penn Club members on how to best
utilize the Club? Try the monthly networking lunches. They’re a great
way to meet people outside of your direct professional circles.
