Report by: Roxane A. Rinard Synopsis
The Arlee Montana web cam helps support the Arlee community two web sites. The images from the web cam intrigues people to want to learn more about the area and gives Arlee residents excellent photographs to share with their family and friends. A community of 800, Arlee has over 2,800 Fans. This base allows Arlee to share their events to a much broader audience. The web cam images are not the most important posts to the Facebook page, the community information is the valued content. 3 Performance Evaluation – Arlee Montana Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. The performance evaluation looks at the community, other web cams, the business and networking aspects of an individual cam. We review the web site statistics and then review the Facebook statistics to determine the best way to utilize the web cam. TheCommunity
Arlee Montana is located 20 miles north of Missoula. Arlee is the southern gateway to the Flathead Indian Reservation. According to the 2010 census Arlee has a population of approximately 800 people. OtherWebCams
A Google search for Montana web cams locates several web cams. Most web cams only have the live image. Arlee is a community of roughly 800 people located 20 miles north of Missoula. It is on the main thoroughfare between Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park. Downtown Arlee consists of a grocery store and a few other small businesses. Purpose
Developing Wings established the ArleeMontana.org website in 2005 for local groups to share. Sharing one site helped community in many ways. In addition to sharing each other’s audience they could post for each other as well. The advertising dollars spent supported the whole community. Tibetan Lama (teacher) Tulku Sang‐ngag Rinpoche and his family moved to Arlee and created an International Peace Center, the Garden of One Thousand Buddha’s, just north of Arlee Montana. Arlee is now an international tourist destination. In 2011 Developing Wings established ArleeMontana.com for businesses and tourism information. The Facebook page and the web cam were added. The Facebook page combines information from ArleeMontana.org and ArleeMontana.com to share information about the community. 4 Performance Evaluation – Arlee Montana Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. Report by: Roxane A. Rinard WebCamSet‐Up
Developing Wings mounted a Mobotix web cam overlooking the Jocko River and the Jocko valley. Facebook web cam posts began April 26, 2011 Developing Wings posts images and time lapse videos daily. We monitored the statistics and comments to see if single images, multiple images or time lapse were preferred. Once the audience preferences are identified a script was automatically posts the images and time lapse videos on a predetermined schedule. The live web cam is posted on Arlee Montana’s website www.arleemontana.com. The best images of the day for the last 5 days are presented in small slide shows under the web cam. Networking
Images are shared with two sister cities where Developing Wings has web cams and Facebook pages, RonanMt.com and StIgnatiusMt.com. 5 Performance Evaluation – Arlee Montana Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. ArleeMontana

Facebook pages have ‘Fans’, people who have ‘Liked’ the page and want to receive more information. When a post is made to the Facebook page, it is shared with a percentage of the Fans. People can also go directly to the page to see posts. When a viewer sees a post they have several possible actions. They can view, like, comment, share, hide, report as spam or unlike the page. This information can be tracked. The following section reviews four different actions people can do to posts on Facebook. o

What is Post Reach? (From Facebook) “Reach is the number of people who have seen your post. Figures are for the first 28 days after a post's publication and include people viewing your post on both desktop and mobile. Your post counts as having reached someone when it is loaded and shown in News Feed.” The following graphs demonstrate the Post Reach during June 2013.
Arlee is a community of roughly 800 people, on June 10, 2013 the Facebook page had 2,753 fans. During the month of June Arlee Montana Facebook page reached a record high of 2,287 (June 14, 2013) people on one day. The monthly low was 558 (June 20, 2013). Post Reach 3: August 10, 2013 – September 6, 2013 On September 4, 2013 a community member posted her experience with rabid bats. Report by: Roxane A. Rinard Analysis September 6, 2013 In 2011 the web cam images were posted and people became ‘Fans’ to receive the daily images. Over time community news and pictures were added. In 2013 the web cam is not the focal point but it does have benefits. People share the images that are important to them, which bring in more fans. The images are also shared with news stations. Arlee is a small community near Missoula Montana. Prior to the web sites and web cam Arlee only made the news for tragedy. One of the most important comments to Developing Wings was a gentleman who said “You make me proud to be from that place.” Arlee makes the news now for beauty and positive events too. 9 Performance Evaluation – Arlee Montana Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. Rinard Likes Comments and Shares: 3 August 10, 2013 to September 6, 2013 Analysis September 6, 2013 Sharing events and images brings a constant flow of likes, comments and shares. The power of networking through Facebook became evident during the Firestone Flats Fire located just west of Arlee. Developing Wings is located in Arlee. When we saw the smoke we knew there were people who need help. They would need horse trailers, places to put animals and places to stay. We turned the cam that direction, posted pictures on Facebook and requested help. In moments the community came together with offers of help. We attended the first meeting from the Fire Department. The fire was expanding rapidly and the control of the fire was transitioning from local to federal support. We were surprised that the government did not create a way to contact displaced families. We created an email list for displaced families to keep them informed. In less than 2 hours after the meeting, the fire department wanted to contact the displaced families and contacted us so we could contact them. 11 Performance Evaluation – Arlee Montana Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. Report by: Roxane A. Rinard June we added events to the website that are shared on ArleeMontana.com, ArleeMontana.org, RonanMt.com and StIgnatiusMontana.com websites as well as the Facebook page. The spikes in July are August are due to the Arlee Celebration over July 4th which brings thousands of people to Arlee, and the Firestones Flats fire. Conclusion
September 6, 2013 The Arlee websites and Facebook page are valued by the community. For a community of 800 people to have an audience of over 2,800 people is beyond any expectation we had. To help local businesses we have started to offer advertising to local companies. As always, the challenge is not the technical aspect but training the advertiser how to utilize the system to their advantage. 27 Performance Evaluation – Arlee Montana Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc.
