Skoach Training Manual WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A SKOACH PROGRAM STRUCTURE AND EXPECTATIONS TIPS FOR WORKING WITH KIDS What is our mission as Skoaches? Skate Like A Girl Mission: Create an inclusive community by promoting confidence, leadership, and social justice through the sport of skateboarding. u We model respect, courage, understanding, responsibility and fun. u We use our own knowledge and skills to put our mission into action. u We make sure our skaters are safe, having fun and learning new skills. u We follow Skate Like A Girl and YES program rules and expectations. Program Structure Program Prep Instruction Time Wrap Up Program Prep u Please arrive 15 minutes early u u On time is late! Early is on time! Help out with all set up! u Set up of gear to proper location u Getting skaters padded up as they come in u Knee, elbow & wrist u Make sure all pads fit properly u Check out the Skatepark – move obstacles, etc. if needed u Supervising kids during free skate – hold hands if needed u Greeting the skaters u Greeting parents u Staff Huddle prior to program start Pre-Instruction Structure u The Circle (5 – 10 Minutes) u Stretching & Warming Up u Introductions / Ice Breakers u General rules & Expectations u Breaking out into small groups w/ instructors Lesson Structure Small Groups Small groups will be broken up into different areas of the park and with different levels of ability. When working with your group: Ø Keep them focused on tricks within their ability. (Remember our goals are 1.Safety 2.Fun 3.Learning) Ø Set up a goal for the day (Ex. A new trick) Ø Teach your student Skate park etiquette as you go Ø Example: yell “BOARD” when your board gets away Ø Create appropriate challenges and activities according to your group size or ability. Remember to be flexible. Ø Follow the Skate Like a Girl mission by being a role model Wrapping Things Up u u u Second Circle u Ladies Night u Give Shout outs to other skaters ! Showcase u 12 & Under / Skate Teams u Encourage your skaters to participate! u Cheer loudly for every skater! u “One more try!” Wrap-Up – Continued engagement u Round up the pads u Praise the skaters u Check in with parents u Skoach huddle to debrief Tips for working with younger children u The “Teachable Moment” u 1. Identify the behavior/what happened u 2. Give a reason why u 3. Give them an alternative (the teaching part) u 4.
