“I just want to say how impressed and inspired
I am listening to your presentation…It’s so easy
as a community center to go broad, but you
have gone deep as well. Thank you for doing
this. You should be a model for many, many
different organizations all over this country.
I am very, very inspired.”

DEAR FRIENDS
2014–2015 was a transformative year for COCA. The year was marked with major achievements toward expanding our arts programming in the
schools, taking a national stage to speak on arts education, adding top-tier talent to our leadership team, and building our financial sustainability.
With the generous support of The Boeing Company, COCAedu expanded our successful S.T.E.M. to S.T.E.A.M. initiative in local schools
throughout the region. Incorporating the Arts into S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects is helping students develop
both right- and left-brain thinking—fueling creativity, collaboration and problem solving abilities.
In October, I had the opportunity to speak on this important topic and other COCA programs at the National Endowment for the Arts’ (NEA)
National Council on the Arts tri-annual public meeting in Washington, D.C. As one of only two organizations in the country asked to speak,
it was an honor to tell COCA’s story on this prestigious stage.
In addition to receiving the continued support and recognition from the NEA, COCA was fortunate to receive a pivotal contribution to
propel us forward. Long-time COCA supporters, Alison and John Ferring, pledged $5 million to our endowment, marking the single largest
gift in our history. Their investment in COCA’s future will help to ensure that future generations will have access to the life changing arts
opportunities that COCA provides.
The momentous announcement of the Ferring gift to COCA was celebrated along with the
news that Antonio and Kirven Douthit-Boyd were joining COCA as our new Co-Artistic Directors
of Dance. In August 2015, that news became reality when Antonio and Kirven completed their
international farewell tour with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and were welcomed to
COCA. Their leadership and talent will enrich an already very strong dance program and help
our students reach their full potential.
It was truly an incredible year. Thank you for being part of the COCA community. With the
continued generosity of our donors, Board members and volunteers, and with the deep
engagement and support of our students and patrons, we have set the foundation for
achieving ambitious and bold plans for the future.
Sincerely,

COCAdance is COCA’s advanced student
dance company that focuses on modern
and jazz disciplines. The company had the
pleasure of working with guest choreographer
Jeremy McQueen during his residency as
he set “Dreaming Wide Awake.” Students
were engaged in the process of dance
composition and storytelling, and their short
compositions were used within the piece.
Ballet Eclectica, COCA’s student ballet company,
incorporates classical and contemporary
ballet to build its repertoire. The company was
excited to bring back two of COCA’s favorite
guest choreographers, Antonio and Kirven
Douthit-Boyd, as they set their piece “Solo for
Five.” Ballet Eclectica’s winter classic The Little
Dancer moved audiences as the performance
celebrated St. Louis’ 250th anniversary.
8
The COCA Hip-Hop Crew is COCA’s student hip-hop company
that consists of students in elementary through high school and
select adult hip-hop performers from the St. Louis region. The
students had their first-ever residency with guest choreographer
“Phlex” as he set a commercial hip-hop piece with the First
and Apprentice members.
COCAdance also performed
in the 7th annual production
of Continuing the Legacy in
February 2015. This production,
conceived and directed by
COCA Alumnus Christopher
Page-Sanders, used dance, music
and vivid photography as vehicles
to take audience members on a
powerful journey through black
history—from slavery to the
jazz era, through the civil rights
movement, to modern times.
CTC closed the 2014–2015 season with the COCA Summer
Musical Bring It On at the Edison Theatre at Washington
University in St. Louis. Set in the world of competitive
cheerleading, CTC collaborated with the nationally ranked
Lindenwood cheerleaders to round out the cast. The Bring It On
cast included 49 students from 25 different middle schools,
high schools and colleges. The production was directed by
well-known St. Louis artist Joel P. E. King and for the 11th
consecutive year, the musical was choreographed by COCA
Alumnus Christopher Page-Sanders and musical direction was
provided by COCA Vocal Music Director Phil Woodmore.
Allegro, COCA’s vocal ensemble, features the region’s best young vocalists who perform repertoire
ranging from pop to classical arrangements. Allegro saw tremendous growth in attracting talented
vocalists following the success of the musical Ragtime in summer 2014. Allegro also expanded its repertoire
to include contemporary a capella pieces to highlight the vocal talent of this growing ensemble.
The COCA Theatre Company (CTC)
provides opportunities for young actors
to perform in professional productions of
thoughtfully selected plays and musicals.
In January 2015, CTC presented the musical
Mirette, a story of a young girl who wanted
to be a tightrope walker. The production
was directed by Christopher Limber with
musical direction by Phil Woodmore, and
featured age-appropriate casting and an
advanced score.

“Prior to the program, when my students were asked about their
future careers, most responded that they wanted to be a ‘movie star’
or an ‘athlete,’ and had no real understanding of what an ‘engineer’
was. Since the introduction of the Boeing STEAM project, 46% of my
students now say they want to become engineers.”

COCAedu
Since 1992, COCAedu has provided arts programming to thousands of students and dedicated
educators throughout the St. Louis region, breaking through economic and social barriers.
Interchange
COCAedu’s Interchange program encourages classroom educators to integrate the arts into
other core subjects in order to engage and inspire students in meaningful learning experiences.
In 2014–2015, Interchange brought together teaching artists, educators, and cultural
organizations, including Shakespeare Festival St. Louis, Metro Theater Company and
The St. Louis Poetry Center, to serve more than 1,200 students in area schools.
COCAedu also expanded its Interchange STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts,
Math) work thanks to lead support from The Boeing Company. In partnership with the
Sheldon Concert Hall and Challenger Learning Center-St. Louis, 14 classes of 4th grade
students participated in a year-long STEAM program.

Arts Classes & Residencies
COCAedu
COCAedu’s arts classes and residencies bring customized, multidisciplinary arts enrichment
programs to schools. Most residencies include visits to COCA’s Millstone Gallery for an
exhibition or COCA’s Founders’ Theatre for a performance.
In 2014–2015, COCAedu offered photography residencies based on Ten Years Telling Their
Stories in the Millstone Gallery and theatre residencies that drew inspiration from the COCA
Presents performance of The Little Prince.
A partnership with the Herbert Hoover Club of the Boys & Girls Club of America allowed
COCAedu to provide a variety of robust arts education classes for 120 students, ages 6–14,
as part of the “Summer Brain Gain” program at Ferguson Middle School.
Professional Development
COCAedu professional development provides teachers with the tools needed to develop
and implement arts-based strategies in their classrooms. In the summer of 2015, nearly 100
educators attended the 8th annual three-day Summer Arts Integration Institute taught by
COCA and Kennedy Center teaching artists. New to the Institute, was an intensive track
specifically for early childhood educators.
In 2014–2015, COCAedu also offered six professional development workshops on topics
ranging from using iPads in the classroom to examining trauma through expressive arts to
integrating both drama and dance into the classroom.
In 2014-2105, COCAedu established a partnership
with the brand new KIPP Victory Academy, and
provided 200 kindergarten and first grade
students with residencies in dance, creative drama
and movement.

ONCE A DANCER, ALWAYS A DANCER!
COCA supporter and Board Member Shereen Fischer was a dancer growing up and experienced first-hand the
training schedule and discipline required every day to be a serious dancer. To eliminate any barriers to success
for COCA’s dancers, Shereen came up with the “In My Shoes” campaign to raise money to cover the cost of the
487 pairs of dance shoes that COCA provides annually to students in the Pre-Professional Dance Division who
otherwise would not be able to purchase them. Providing her own lead gift to launch this campaign, Shereen
delivered curtain speeches from the COCA stage that inspired others to join her cause and donate the cost of a
pair of ballet, tap, jazz or pointe shoes. The result? 100% of the shoe costs of $20,100 was raised. Bravo, Shereen!
