Love Island
»Wir Leute vom Balkan neigen dazu, unsere Vergangenheit zu ernst zu
nehmen, und wir erleben sie auf eine mythologische Weise. In Love
Island wollte ich die Vergangenheit als verführerische Frau darstellen, die
an einem Tag vorbeikommt, an dem man sie am wenigsten erwartet und
sie ganz sicher nicht erwünscht.«
Grebo und seine hochschwangere Frau Liliane verbringen ihren Urlaub
an der kroatischen Adria-Küste. Sie sonnen, schwimmen, essen und lieben sich entspannt durch die Tage bis Flora auftaucht. Die ebenso schöne wie toughe Frau, von der sich alle angezogen fühlen, lässt ihr Leben
aus den Fugen geraten. Auch Grebo fühlt sich sofort zu der Tauchlehrerin hingezogen, nichts ahnend vom Geheimnis, das sie mit Liliane verbindet. Doch Geheimnisse bleiben auf der Insel nicht lange verborgen
und so nimmt ein ungewöhnlicher Beziehungsreigen seinen Lauf.
Der neue Film der Preisträgerin des Goldenen Bären ist eine temporeiche queere Dreiecksgeschichte, die von Anfang bis Ende voller Überraschungen steckt. Farbenfroh und mit ironischem Blick für BalkanKlischees erzählt Jasmila Žbanić die Geschichte einer jungen Familie im
emotionalen Gefühlschaos. Gemeinsam mit dem gefeierten Regisseur
und Romanautor Aleksandar Hemon schrieb Žbanić das Buch zu Love
Island, ihrer ersten Komödie, die an die klassischen amerikanischen
Screwball-Komödien erinnert. Eine Sommerkomödie über moderne
Beziehungen in Kroatien, ein Plädoyer für Offenheit und Veränderung.
Biografie
Die bosnische Regisseurin, Jahrgang 1974, studierte an der Akademie
für Darstellende Kunst in Sarajewo Theater- und Filmregie. 1995 ging
sie in die USA und arbeitete dort als Puppenspielerin am Vermonter
Bread and Puppet Theater und als Clown. Zurück in Sarajewo gründete
sie dort 1997 ihre eigene Filmproduktionsfirma. Mit ihrem Spielfilm­
debüt Grbavica gewann sie 2006 den Goldenen Bären. Love Island
­feierte in Locarno Premiere.
»We, the people from the Balkans tend to take our past way too seriously
and are experience it in a mythological way. In Love Island, I wanted to
see the past as a seductive woman who comes on a day when she’s least
expected and certainly not wanted.«
Grebo and Liliane, his highly pregnant wife, are spending their holidays
off the Adriatic Coast in Croatia. Totally relaxed, they sunbathe, swim,
eat and canoodle the day away until Flora arrives. Well, this beautiful
and tough woman, who seems to attract everybody, throws lives into
disarray. Grebo too is instantly drawn to the diving instructor, unaware
of the secret that binds her with Liliane. But, at least here on the island,
secrets do not remain hidden for long as an unusual relationship carousel
takes its course. This new fast-paced film by the Golden Bear-winner
is a gay love triangle which, from beginning to end is full of surprises.
Replete with much colour and an ironic look at Balkan clichés, Jasmila
Žbanić tells the story of a young family in emotional chaos. Ms Žbanić
wrote the screenplay to Love Island together with acclaimed director and
novelist Aleksandar Hemon. It’s her first comedy and harks back to the
classic American screwball movies. A summer comedy about modern
relationships in Croatia, a plea for openness and change.
Biography
The Bosnian film director, born 1974, studied drama and film at the
Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo. In 1995, she moved to the USA
and worked as a puppeteer at the Vermont Bread and Puppet Theatre and
as a clown. Back in Sarajevo, she founded her own film production company
in 1997. Her feature film debut Esma’s Secret picked up the Golden Bear
Award in 2006. Love Island celebrated its premiere in Locarno.
