The wine route
of the Lakes
We suggest you begin your journey at Polifitos, at the foot of the Pieria
slopes, in the Kozani prefecture. It is here that the Aliakmonas dam and its
artificial lake were created, giving life to an area now teeming with fruit
orchards and vineyards. The traditional picturesque settlement of Velvendos
lies nearby, with its lovely stone houses, old watermills, noteworthy
Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments. Fifty six charming chapels dot
the valley. You might want to spend an hour or two just gazing at the densely
forested slopes or lulled by the rhythms of the Skepasmenos waterfall. Surely
you’ll want to visit the two wineries on this part of the wine route of the
Lakes: the Voyatzis estate and the Zandes estate.

If it happens to be mid-autumn, when traveling towards Kozani, take a detour
to the saffron cultivation area making a stop at the villages of Krokos and Ano
Komi. Tiny violet crocus flowers blanket the fields, their crimson stigmas all
but hidden until plucked. This is saffron, or «Krokos Kozanis», the most
expensive spice in the world and arguably the most mysterious and aromatic.
As the road continues toward Amyndeo, take in the varied landscape, which
moves from flat expanses to the majesty of the Vitsi mountain range. It is
here, in the midst of a high mountain plateau that you’ll encounter the
pristine Lake Vegoritida and the untold charms of the wild Macedonian West!
Following the line of the vineyards, stop for a tour and wine tasting at the
Amyndeo Cooperative Winery, at the Alfa Estate, at the Kir Yianni Winery and
at the Pavlou Estate.
A stroll around Nymfeo, a remote but dazzling country hamlet replete with
stone houses, massive carved gates and cobblestone alleys, is a must.
Nature lovers will savor the natural beauty of Lake Petres, as well as of the
twin lakes Zazari and Himaditida. The dense reeds along their banks provide
an ideal refuge for many birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and fish.

Unsere Reise beginnt in Polifito am Fuße der Pieria Berge in der Präfektur
von Kozani. An dieser Stelle wurden der Damm von Aliakmon und der
künstliche See errichtet, der einer fruchtbaren Ebene mit Obstplantagen und
Weinbergen Leben eingehaucht hat. Ganz in der Nähe befindet sich die
malerische, traditionelle Siedlung Velvendos. Bei einem Spaziergang sehen
wir zweistöckige Steinhäuser mit traditionellen Farben, alte Wassermühlen,
wichtige byzantinische und postbyzantinische Monumente. Auf der Ebene
zählen wir 56 malerische Kapellen. Der Blick auf die grünen Hänge und der
Rausch der Wasserfälle von Skepasmenos werden uns beruhigen und wir
werden angetan sein von den Weinen, die wir in den Weingütern Ktima
Voyiatzis und Ktima Zandés verkosten.
In der Nähe von Kozani befinden sich die Orte Krokos und Ano Komi, ein
kleiner Umweg dorthin lohnt sich allemal. Hier sind bekanntlich die einzigen
Plantagen des berühmten roten Krokos in Griechenland angesiedelt. Von
seinen Blüten wird das teuerste Gewürz der Welt erzeugt, der Safran.

Food, of course, is an important part of the wine route of the Lakes and after
a peripatetic day on the trail, a good meal is de rigueur. Head to Agios
Panteleimonas, Sklithro or Lehovo to eat at restaurants that specialize in
local cuisine. Delicious red peppers and local pickled vegetables, as well as
great savory pies, homemade pasta called petoura, tangy «trahana», a
pebble-shaped pasta, game, sweet water fish and more, are all part of the
local larder and menu selections you’ll likely encounter.
Along the wine route of the Lakes, a stop in Greece’s “City of Water”
–Kastoria– as well as nearby Florina is in order. Kastoria, on the Lake
Orestiada, boasts one of the most pristine collection of Byzantine churches
in the world as well as, hosts stately old villas. Wine, of course, is also a focal
point in Kastoria and its environs and the wineries to visit are Domaine
Stergiou in Metamorfossi and Maggel Estate in Koromilia.
Continue your journey towards the south to Siatista, a small mountain town
with beautifully preserved houses and famed for its fur industry, wines and
sun-dried grapes. Stop in at the I Dio Fili (The 2 Friends) Winery. From there,
take the road toward one of the most untrammelled parts of northern Greece,
Grevena, where Macedonia meets Epirus.
Western Macedonia is a fairytale landscape of beautiful mountains,
crystalline rivers and enchanting lakes. All the man-made pleasures along
the way, from wineries to restaurants, make this one of the most exciting
excursions along the wine roads.

Weiter auf dem Weg nach Amyndeo wird die Landschaft abwechselungsreich.
Hinter uns liegt die Ebene, vor uns türmt sich das Bergmassiv Vitsi auf. Im
Hintergrund auf einer Hochebene, umgeben von hohen Bergen, sehen wir
den See Vegoritis, der Charme des wilden makedonischen Westens!
Zahlreiche Weinberge und ihre Weingüter laden uns zu einer Führung und
Weinverkostung ein: Winzergenossenschaft Amyndeo, Alpha Estate, Kir
Yianni und Pavlou Estate.
Einen Abstecher zum Nymfeo empfehlen wir wärmstens. Nymfeo ist ein altes
Bergdorf mit einnehmender Natur, aus Stein erbauten Herrschaftshäusern
mit schweren Haustüren und Gässchen mit kunstvoll angelegten
Kopfsteinpflastern. Hauptanziehungspunkt für eingefleischte Naturfreunde
aber sind die Seen der Region, nämlich der See Petres sowie das
wunderschöne Seenpaar Zazari-Chimaditida. Ihre Ufer mit dem dichten
Schilf sind ein ideales Refugium für Vögel, Säugetiere, Amphibien, Reptilien,
Fische. Die Seen sind im Netz Natura 2000 eingegliedert.
Nach all diesen «Erforschungen» fahren wir Richtung Agios Panteleimonas,
Sklithro oder Lechovo, wo wir in einem der Restaurants zu Mittag essen
können – die lokale Gastronomie hat viel anzubieten. Überall in der Region
werden schmackhafte rote Paprikas und Eingelegtes serviert. Aus
knusprigen Teigblättern werden Teigtaschen, Trachanas und «Petoura» (eine
Art Flachnudeln) hergestellt. Je nach Saison wird auch Wild angeboten. In
den Orten um die Seen kann man natürlich auch Fisch genießen: gegrillte
«tsironia» und sonnengetrocknete Karpfen. Hier war bis vor kurzem der
einzige Lebensraum des «Korigonos», eines sehr seltenen Süßwasserfisches.
Ein nicht alltägliches Erlebnis, zugleich ein Genuss für die Sinne, ist die Fahrt
zur charmanten Grenzstadt Florina und zur wunderschönen Stadt Kastoria.
Die makedonische «Wasserstadt», die am See Orestias liegt, überrascht den
Besucher mit imposanten Herrschaftshäusern und byzantinischen Kirchen.
Erst unlängst rückte hier der Wein in den Blickpunkt. In den Weingütern
Domaine Stergiou in Metamorfossi und Maggel Estate in Koromilia erfährt
der Gast alle Einzelheiten dieser Entwicklung.
Weiter südlich erreichen wir Siatista, eine kleine Bergstadt mit schönen alten
Herrschaftshäusern, berühmter Pelzindustrie und bekannten Weinen,
gekeltert aus sonnengetrockneten Trauben. Im Weingut «Ι Dio Fili» wartet
auf uns eine Führung, ehe wir dort ankommen, wo Mazedonien Epirus trifft:
in Grevena mit ihrer unberührten Natur.
Westmakedonien ist das Märchenland der wunderschönen Berge, der
kristallinen Flüsse und der traumhaften Seen. Die Rundreise führte uns zu
traumhaften Landschaften mit schönen Herbergen und interessanten
gastronomischen Angeboten.

Our trip brings us deep into the heart of western Macedonia, where
those who work the vineyards spend their long and secluded hours
in the calm beauty of the lakes and hidden mountain tops. The same
wild beauty is magically present in the area’s wines.
The climate in Velvendos is continental, but the proximity to the lakes as well
as a constant breeze, cool the vineyards in the summer months. The breeze
helps reduce the incidence of diseases in the vines thus making organic cultivation all the more feasible and successful. The Regional Wines of Velvendos
are produced from the grape varieties Roditis, Chardonnay, Trebbiano,
Batiki, Xinomavro, Moshomavro, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wine grape cultivated at Amyndeo is the Xinomavro, the well-known red
variety of northern Greece. At an altitude of 600-750 meters, we’re in an area
ideal for producing red, rosé and sparkling V.Q.P.R.D. wines. The sole Greek
V.Q.P.R.D. rosé is produced here and it stands out for its aromatic character.
The soil and climate here are also ideal for the cultivation of white varieties.
The Regional white wines of Florina are produced from the Roditis, Chardonnay,
Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer varieties.
On the slopes of the mountains surrounding Kastoria, vineyards are planted
with Greek and international varieties such as Roditis, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling,
Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. These make up the Regional Wines
of Kastoria.
In Siatista, grapes were cultivated as early as the 15th century. In the 19th century
grape exports were booming. In Siatista about 100 hectares (250 acres) are
planted with Xinomavro and the local Moshomavro variety. The area has long
been known for its sweet wines made from sun-dried grapes.

Weinberge und Weine
in der Region
der Seen
Das Klima in der Region von Velvendos ist kontinental, wird aber durch die Nachbarschaft zu den Seen beeinflusst. Die stets vorhandenen Winde sind im Sommer
eine ständige Quelle von Frische für die Weinberge. Die Winde verhindern das
Aufkommen von Pilzkrankheiten, so dass die Grundsätze des biologischen Anbaus erfolgreich angewandt werden. Aus den Rebsorten Roditis, Chardonnay,
Trebbiano, Batiki, Xinomavro, Moschomavro, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon werden
die Weine mit der Klassifikation Landweine von Velvendos produziert.
In Amyndeo wird hauptsächlich Xinomavro angebaut, die bekannteste rote
Rebsorte in Nordgriechenland. Auf 600 bis 750m finden wir das ideale Gebiet
für die Produktion von Rot- und Schaumweinen sowie Rosè mit dem Prädikat
V.Q.P.R.D. Hier wird auch der einzige griechische Rosé V.Q.P.R.D. Wein
hergestellt, der sich durch seinen aromatischen Charakter auszeichnet. Die
Boden- und Klimaverhältnisse sind ideal auch für den Anbau von Weißweinen.
Aus den Rebsorten Roditis, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer
entstehen die Weißweine mit der Klassifikation Landwein von Florina.
In den Berghängen, die Kastoria umgeben, sind Weinberge mit griechischen
und internationalen Rebsorten angepflanzt worden: Roditis, Sauvignon
Blanc, Riesling, Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot. Aus diesen Rebsorten
werden die Weine mit der Klassifikation Landwein von Kastoria produziert.
In Siatista existiert der Weinbau bereits seit dem 15. Jahrhundert. Im 19. Jahrhundert hatte der Handel mit Weinen aus Siatista sogar Exporterfolge aufzuweisen. Heute sind noch etwa 100 Hektar Weinberge mit Xinomavro und der
autochthonen Moschomavro bepflanzt. Aus diesen Trauben, die in der
Sonne oder in geschlossenen Räumen getrocknet werden, entsteht der bekannte «sonnengetrocknete» Wein von Siatista.

There are wine roads in almost all
wine-producing countries. In Greece,
the first organized wine roads were outlined
in 1993 by the Wine Producers Association
of the Northern Greece Vineyard
and given the official name
“Wine Roads of Northern Greece”.
Weinstraßen gibt es in fast allen
weinbautreibenden Ländern. In Griechenland
ist das der erste Versuch dieser Art, der von
13 Weinerzeugern im nordgriechischen Bereich
gemacht wurde. Sie haben 1993 die “Verband
der Weinproduzenten des Weingartens
Nordgriechenlands” ins Leben gerufen, eben
die heutigen Weinstraßen Nordgriechenlands.
Today, there are 37 members of the union
and 8 routes that cross the whole
of Northern Greece, with suggested stops
at the notable wineries of Thessaly
(Rapsani and Krania), Epirus, Macedonia,
and Thrace. Signage along the roads
directs travelers to vineyards, wineries
and other points of interest.
The many restaurants, tavernas, inns,
hotels, traditional shops,
and alternative activities round out
the traveler’s experience along the
Wine Roads. Each designated venue
has been selected according to specific
qualitative criteria and is so indicated
with a special seal of approval.

Heute umfasst die Vereinigung bereits
37 Mitglieder auf 8 verschiedenen Weinrouten
in ganz Nordgriechenland, nämlich
Thessalien (Papsani und Krania), Epirus,
Mazedonien und Thrakien. Alle Routen sind
gut beschildert und lassen Sie die Weingüter
und deren Weinberge einfach finden.
Die Karte wird ergänzt durch Hinweise
auf Restaurants, Tavernen, Hotels und
Herbergen, dazu Läden mit traditionellen
Erzeugnissen und Orte mit attraktiven
Freizeitangeboten. Es handelt sich dabei
allesamt um Kooperationsmitglieder der Weinstraßen Nordgriechenlands, die nach den
strengen Qualitätskriterien bewertet wurden.
