ST. ROBERT BELLARMINE PARISH
ST. JOHN BOSCO PARISH
St. Robert Bellarmine is a welcoming Catholic community,
which strives to bring people to God and God to people
through the ministries of worship, stewardship, education and
Christian service.
We, the people of St. John Bosco Catholic Parish, are called by our
baptism to carry on the mission of Jesus; to teach as He taught; to
serve as He served; to celebrate our faith through, with, and in
Him; to be a living and welcoming sign of the Father's Kingdom
within and beyond the boundaries of our parish, not only by our
words, but also by our actions, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Let Go and Let God
15th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"He replied to him, 'You have answered
correctly; do this and you will live.'" In
today's Gospel a scholar questions Jesus
about how to gain eternal life. In case
anyone ever wonders whether heaven is
within reach, one only needs to refer to
this Gospel. Jesus provides a clear answer that gives us a
clear plan of action: We are to love God with all that we
are, and also to love our neighbors. Really, it's that
simple.
The scholar, however, complicated things to make
himself look better. Instead of accepting the simplicity of
Jesus' instruction, he wanted to split hairs, asking, "And
who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied with the story of the
Good Samaritan-and the lesson that our neighbors are
not just those we know or love. Rather, our neighbor is
the person that needs our help, the person whom we
would rather ignore, the person whom God puts in our
path. In short, everyone is our neighbor and we are
called to treat everyone with mercy. This is part of how
we gain eternal life.
But this flows from the first element of Jesus' answer.
First and foremost, Jesus instructs us to love God "with
all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength,
and with all your mind." When we love God in this way,
truly as the Lord of our life, then loving our neighbors
becomes the easy part. When our hearts and minds are
full of the love of God-who loves all people-then it will
necessarily follow that we too will desire to share that
love with others and not count the cost.
The Good Samaritan is an excellent example of this kind
of love. Without hope of repayment, he gave of his time
and his money to help the poor victim. But in return, the
Samaritan will surely "gain eternal life."

Rite of Christian Initiation
for Adults (RCIA)
What is the RCIA? The Rite of
Christian Initiation for Adults is a process
for individuals who are interested in
becoming Catholic or individuals who
were baptized Catholic and did not
receive any further instruction in their faith. It is called a
process because it is a journey that individuals begin and
continue to the day they die, as all journeys in faith.
Who should attend the RCIA?
! Individuals who have never been baptized and wish
to join the Catholic faith.
! Individuals who have been baptized in another faith
and wish to come Catholic.
! Individuals who are baptized Catholic and did not
receive any further instruction in their faith.
! You are married to a Catholic and now want to
become Catholic too.
If you would like to become Catholic and begin the
RCIA process, please call Laura Scanlan at the parish
office at 313.937.1500 x114.
Redford Women’s Outreach
Backpacks
Can you believe it! But it is that time of year again
when we gather donations of school supplies and fill
backpacks. I know that it seems like school just finished
for the school year; however Sue Pherson from Redford
Interfaith Relief would like to distribute the backpacks in
early August. Those school supplies ads will be out
before we know it!
Please see the flyer in the
bulletin to see what school
supply items are needed. Let’s
help the children of Redford
Interfaith Relief be prepared
with all of the supplies they
need at the start of a new
school year.
All women and girls (6th grade and older) are welcome
to join us on July 31st.
When have you gone out of your way to help a stranger in need?

PASTORAL
NOTES
In
the
gospel
reading at Mass
Jesus
gives
f u r t h e r
instruction
on
what it means to
be his disciples. A
lawyer
as ked
Jesus: "What must I do to inherit
everlasting life?" The lawyer
answered his own question by
stating what was in the law. We
should love God above all things
and love our neighbor as ourselves.
Jesus responded that he should go
and do it.
The man wanted to know who his
neighbor was. Jesus thought this
was the wrong question because it
implied the idea of which one he
did not have to love. The real
question should be: "How can I be a
neighbor to others?" Jesus told the
story of the Good Samaritan to
answer this latter question.
In the story the priest and Levite
passed up the man in need because
they were held back by the law. For
a priest or Levite to even get near a
dead body would have made them
unfit to perform their ministry in
the temple. Their legalism
prevented them from practicing
charity while the despised
Samaritan took the time to help
the man in need. People in every
age may have to face a similar
problem when faced with two
duties
such
as
church
responsibilities versus helping
someone.
We try to learn the teachings of
our Catholic faith and the
principles of Christian behavior.
Jesus, however, tells us to go and
do. It is not enough to know the
Gospel, nor even to believe it. The
Gospel must be lived. Jesus
challenges us to become loving and
caring people, to apply the
principles we learn. We are called
to be neighbor to others.
Our 60th Anniversary Banquet
was a happy event. Many thanks
to all who helped with the
arrangements, especially Sally
Bazan who organized the dinner
and Carol Tomiko who handled
ticket sales. It was truly a
memorable evening..
I hope you are able to enjoy some
vacation time and appreciate these
beautiful summer days.

What is a Stephen Minister?
A Stephen Minister is a lay person, man or
woman, who through 50 hours of training,
will learn skills and develop his/her gifts for
bringing Christ’s healing love to people who
are lonely, grieving, strangers, new parents,
ill, or experiencing other stresses in life. A Stephen Minister is a caring, sharing person who reaches out a supporting hand to the spiritual, social and emotional needs
of the community. A Stephen Minister is a person who
cares about other people and wants to help reduce their
burdens. They do not work alone, but are supported
within the Stephen Ministry structure.
We have had an active Stephen Ministry program here
at St. Robert Bellarmine parish for over eight years and
hope to continue the program for many years to come.
May the Holy Spirit guide you in determining if this ministry may be something you would enjoy doing. It is a tremendously rewarding experience. Training classes for
new Stephen Ministers will be starting in a few months.
See the bulletin periodically for more information about
this ministry.
If you are interested in the training, have questions or
would like more information, please call 313-937-1500,

Harvest Auction
The Harvest Auction needs your
help! One activity that truly sets
our auction apart from others in the area is our tin can raffle. A tin
can raffle is when you purchase tickets and place one or more
tickets in any “can” you wish to try and win that item. At a certain
point in the evening, a winning ticket is pulled from each can. We
try to have something for everyone! The tin can items can range
from dinner for a week featuring gift cards from local restaurants,
to sports items to a Coach purse.
How can you help? Leading up to the auction, we will list items
each week that are “Wanted”. If you can donate one of the
“Wanted” items, we will be able to make our tin can raffle even
bigger and better! As an incentive, for every item(s) you donate
valued at $100 or more, you will receive a free auction admission
ticket! All donations can either be dropped off at the church
rectory, dropped in the collection baskets or can be picked up by a
committee member by calling Denise Cieglo at (313) 300-3615.
Wanted Items for the Week of July 10th
Event tickets: do you have season tickets to a sporting event?
Lions, Red Wings, U of M or MSU football, even Pistons tickets are
known to bring in high bids! Or, are you more into the theater?
Tickets to a show at the Opera House, Fisher or Fox Theatre are
known to cause a bidding frenzy as well!
Don't forget to ask at work as well! Many organizations purchase
season tickets to events and will be more than happy to donate a
pair to our event. It never hurts to ask...what do you have to lose?

Today we begin our 2016 CSA Campaign. Please prayerfully
consider the most generous gift possible to support 2016 CSA. As
we have done in previous years, if you donate or pledge a minimum
of $100 by Monday, August 22, 2016, your name will be entered to
win $100.
CSA Minute: Natural Family Planning
"Natural Family Planning. Love, Mercy, Life. Opening the Heart of
Marriage" is the theme of National Natural Family Planning (NFP)
Awareness Week 2016, held this July 24 to 30. The campaign of the
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops celebrates God's design for
married love and the gift of life and raises awareness of NFP methods.
Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the archdiocesan Office for
Natural Family Planning, which is part of the Department of Evangelization,
Catechesis and Schools, to offer classes in and presentations about NFP
methods. To celebrate NFP Awareness Week, the Office for Natural
Family Planning is hosting a family picnic with the Couple to Couple
League at VFW Park in Royal Oak on Sunday, July 24. Anyone living,
supportive of, or interested in NFP is welcome. For more information
about NFP Awareness Week or RSVPing to the family picnic, or about
other CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, go to
www.AOD.org.

Mercy in Action
For the last several weeks in the
bulletin there has been an article
about Mercy in Action. Each parish
or a group of parishes will plan an
activity to benefit our local
Community. The day of this event
is Saturday, October 1, 2016 from 8am –
1:00pm. The day will start with registration, a
continental breakfast, prayer service and then
off to complete the project for the community.
At Noon everyone comes back to have lunch,
a table discussion of the day, prayer service and
the day is ended.
I am looking for an individual to chair this
project. Chairing this project involves
recruiting volunteers; attendance at four to five
(4-5) meetings to provide your status on this
project.
I am working on the activity for this day,
however if anyone has any ideas of what we
can do for the community, please let me know.
Parishioners of all ages can get involved. This
activity would be great for scout troops,
confirmation candidates who need service
hours or other individuals who need service
hours for their school. Each child must be
accompanied by an adult.
Everyone who participates in this project will
receive a free T-Shirt. We are the face of
Christ. Joins us and make a difference. To
participate, please call or email Laura Scanlan,
[email protected].
Redford Interfaith Relief
Needs Your Help
Redford Interfaith Relief is in desperate need
for volunteers. This would be a great volunteer
opportunity for older teens. Help is mainly
needed on Tuesday and Fridays from 9:30 a.m.
to 2:00 p.m. You would be assisting customers
to their cars with their groceries. If you are a
young lady and like to sort clothes, there are
opportunities for you to work on Tuesdays
and Fridays 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
In this Year of Mercy, you would be fulfilling
two (2) Corporal Works of Mercy – Feed the
Hungry and Clothe the Naked. Please
prayerfully consider these opportunities to
serve others. If you would like to volunteer,
please call or email Laura Scanlan.
When have you gone out of your way to help a stranger in need?
