original concept behind Christopher

was to license it as a nursing
home. However, as construction and operational plans were developed, the founders and the Board of Directors came to
realize that the facility needed to have a
higher level of medical care. In addition,
designation as a "special hospital" would
qualify the House for reimbursement by
public medical insurance programs such
as Medicaid and Medicare as well as pri-
vate insurers. While this led to revisions in
the project's construction and operation
and a delay in opening, it allows Christopher House to offer care to more PWAs.
Clients are referred to the House by their
physicians and stay until they are able to

return home. No one is refused admission
due to sex, race, sexual orientation or ability to pay. Grants and donations will cover
clients without insurance or financial
resources.
The Austin community has much to be
proud of in Christopher House. It was
created out of a vision of compassion and
caring for people with AIDS, and people
of every kind rallied behind the vision to
help bring it to reality. Everyone connected
with the House has been pleased to see it
finally fulfill its mission, and even though
they hope that more such facilities will not
be needed in the future, perhaps Christopher House can serve as a model for
caring for the sick and for community
involvement.

"It's Just A Miracle": One Story of Healing
As we toured Christopher House in April
gathering information for this article, we
had the privilege of speaking with one of
the residents who wanted to share his experience with THIS WEEK IN TEXAS. [Names
have been changed for confidentiality.]
Don Smith, 36, is from a small community outside of Austin. In early March he
was admitted to an Austin hospital with a
diagnosis of toxoplasmosis, an infection
which can have severe effects on the nervous system and brain. Despite treatments,
Don's condition continued to worsen to
the point where he was barely conscious
and was unable to eat or speak. His doctor had him admitted to Christopher House
four days before our tour.
When we met Don, he was still a little
weak, but he was sitting up in his bed and
finishing breakfast. He spoke slowly, but
was very emphatic about the quality of
care that he was receiving. "I can barely
remember what (the hospital) was like, but
I know I wasn't getting any better. These

House, and Carol Cody, executive director, just two of the
many people and groups that helped make the residence
facility a reality.
Donna, a very open, down-to-earth woman.
She told us, "It's like a miracle. I don't think
Don would have come out of this without
Christopher House." With tears in her
eyes, Donna talked to us about the care,
both medical and emotional, that her son
was receiving and how it was the key factor in his recovery. "You can feel the caring here," she said. "You could tell that
some of the staff at the hospital didn't
want to handle AIDS-there
was prejudice. It's completely different here."
Stewart Gallas, Intake and Discharge
Director of Christopher House, told us that
the change in Don's condition was "like
night and day." In fact, Don had improved
so much that Gallas was conferring with
his doctor and mother about arrangements
for him to return home.
As we thanked the Smiths and wished
them good luck, Donna said again, "It's
just a miracle." May it be the first of many
in Christopher House.
At the entrance to Christopher House is a wall of hands,
created by local ceramic artist rre Arenz, composed of earthtone-colored tiles each bearing a different person's handprint.
people have been wonderful. You can tell
that they care."
We also spoke with Don's mother,

FALSETTOS
"
Homosexuals.
Women with children.
Short insomniacs. And a teeny,
tiny band. Come right in-the
welcome
mat is on the floor." With that invitation,
we are ushered into Falsettoland, a land-:
scape of shifting ideas, emotions and
values in which one Jewish family finds
itself.
Falsettos, now on stage at Zachary
Scott Theatre Center in Austin, won two
Tony Awards for best score and book of
a musical for its creators, William Finn and
James Lapine. Originally written as two
one-act plays, Falsettos combines "March
of the Falsettos" and "Falsettoland"
into
ajourney through three years in the life of
a very unconventional family.
Marvin (played by Joe York), the unlikely
hero of Falsettos, has problems: he's
PAGE 18
After breaking upat the end of Act I of Falsettos, Marvin (Joe
York, sitting up) and Whizzer(Blake Yelavich, lying) try to
make a go of it again in Act II.
Jewish, he's neurotic and he has divorced
his wife Trina (Meredith RObertson), left his
son Jason (Wroe Jackson) and run off to
live with his boyfriend, Whizzer (Blake
Yelavich). Complicating the situation is
Marvin's desire for them all to be friends,
"a loving and tight-knit family." Marvin's
longtime psychiatrist Mendel (Scotty Roberts) attempts to smooth the situation out
while trying to win Trina's heart. By the end
of 1978 and Act I, Marvin and Whizzer have
split up and Mendel and Trina are married.
As Act II plays upon the squabbles of
the first act to show us how this little band
of friends, foes, lovers and family begins
to grow up and transform, it introduces
Cordelia (Robin Houston) and Dr. Charlotte
(Ameerah Tatum), the lesbian neighbors
who are Marvin's good friends. As everyone battles over Jason's upcoming Bar
Mitzvah, Marvin and Whizzer decide to try
a relationship again, only to find they have

to confront the specter of AI DS emerging
in 1981.
Falsettos takes its audience at a whirlwind pace through a full spectrum of emotions. There are wonderfully funny moments, monumental arguments, a tender
love ballad or two and a confrontation with
death. Ultimately it's a deeply touching
look at relationships and how, even with
the changing nature of "families," we can
support and love each other.
With the ensemble cast, it is difficult to
single out anyone performance as better
than the others. Falsettos offers each performer an opportunity to stand out, but it
is Joe York as Marvin who has perhaps the
most challenging role and some of the
best musical numbers. York, a longtime

veteran of Austin theatre, offers a perfectly
controlled portrayal of a self-centered man
forced to grow up and a marvelous voice
which is given free rein on two of the play's
best numbers, "Fatherto Son" and "What

Meredith Robertson's Trina is a study in
confusion, trying to "hold to the ground
while the ground keeps shifting."
Shebrings down the house with the frantic
"I'm Breaking Down," complete with

Blake Yelavich
brings good looks and a strong physical
presence to the role of Marvin's lover,
Whizzer, and Scotty Roberts' psychiatrist
is fussy and bitchy enough to provide
some of the show's funniest moments.
Special mention has to go to 13-year-old
Wroe Jackson as Jason, who handles a difficult emotional role as well as the complicated lyrics of the show with professional aplomb.
~
Falsettos is basically entirely sung.
William Finn's score ranges from elaborate Stephen Sondheim-style numbers to
a very classic Broadway sound. The songs
are vivid and clever as well as complicated:

it's a tribute to the cast and Jim Fritzler's
musical direction that they come off without a hitch.
Fritzler's excellent direction is enhanced
by Judy Thompson-Price's choreography,
which often puts cast and pieces of furniture into whirling motion in Michael
Raiford's big white house set, echoing the
flow of emotions onstage.
In the midst of debates over what does
and does not constitute a "family," Falsettos affirms that it is caring, support and
ultimately love that define a family. Its
depiction of gay men and lesbians in loving, natural relationships
is unlike any
shown in movies, most theatre or on television. The Zachary Scott Theatre Center
is to be commended for its courage in
presenting this entertaining and positive
• look at unconventional
families to the
Austin community. This is the first locallyproduced staging of Falsettos in the state.
Falsettos runs through June 5 at the
Zachary Scott Theatre Center, 1510 Toomey Road, in Austin. Performances are
Wednesdays through Sundays. For tickets

What They Are,
What They Do
BY CHARLES DOMINGUES
T
ne nature of HIV-related health problems demands close attention to the
psychosocial needs of those affected by
it-people
living with HIV/AIDS, significant others, family members and other
loved ones. One profession that is dedicated to responding to such needs is social
work. In this article I hope to provide some
insight into social work by giving a brief
history of the profession, talking about
how it looks today, taking a look at specific
services provided by social workers and
then citing some case examples of social
work services.
The history of social work as a profession is filled with diversity, and a look at a
few of the early social work practitioners
demon states this. Dorothea Dix (18021887) reported on the neglect, suffering
and abuse of the insane in the middle of
the last century, which prepared the way
for the mental health movement. Jane Addams (1860-1935), who was an organizer,
settlement house leader and Nobel Peace
Prize winner, is considered the founder of
the profession. She is often referred to as
"the mother of social work" and, incidentally, is pretty widely acknowledged to
have been a lesbian. William Dubois (18681963) was an outstanding African American social worker and a civil rights activist for five decades.
Some of the earliest practitioners of
soclal work came out of the charity organIzation societies which were formed in the
1800s and were the beginnings of the organization and professionalization of social
Work. This in turn led to the development
of training programs, institutions
and
eventually schools of social work.
Initially, social work focused on child
and family well-being and health. It's here
that we can see the development in social
Work of areas of specialization. Medical
Social work, for example, began with those
Social workers at the turn of the century

who concerned themselves with improving social conditions that bred infectious
diseases such as tuberculosis.
Today social workers can be found in
many areas: child and family welfare,
school systems, certainly in the mental
health field (social workers make up the
largest group of psychotherapists
in the
U.S., about one-third more than psychologists and about two-thirds more than
psychlatrists), in the employee assistance
field and, of course, also in the medical
health care area.
Social workers are thoroughly trained,
having at the very least a bachelor's degree;
most of us have a master's and some have
doctorates. Social work is also regulated
in every state and the District of Columbia.
Regulation varies from state to state, but
involves either obtaining a license, a certificate or registration. In Texas, social
workers are Iicensed by the Department of
Health. Most social workers are L.M.S.W.'s
(Licensed Master Social Worker). Social
workers with a bachelor's degree are
L.SW.'s (Licensed Social Workers). Some
individuals who do not have a social work
degree but who do have a combination of
education and experience in social servicetype work qualify for an SW.A. (Social
Work Associate). Any social worker in individual private practice should also have
the letters A.C.P. after his or her title. This
indicates
the person is experienced
enough to be working in such a setting.
Other letters usually come from professional associations and, while they may be
a good indicator of additional training or
experience, are not required by the state.
It is important to know, then, that social
workers are trained, regulated professionals who can help people in a number of
ways. Primarily, social workers can help
people affected by HIV/AIDS by providing
information about, referrals to and assistance with outside resources. Forms of

assistance include: informing people of
their rights and responsibilities regarding
insurance underCO~RA regulations; finding programs to pay Insurance premiums;
or referring individuals to support organizations for more information, education or
ser support. Social workers can also pro~ide individual, couple or family counseling. This can either be supportive counseling that relates to issues of adjustment to
a diagnosis, or it can be longer-term psychotherapy regarding interpersonal
or
emotional issues.
The first set of services, information,
referral and assistance, is more commonly
called information and referral or sometimes just "I and R." I add, and stress, the
"assistance" portion, because what is involved is more than simply giving someone
a phone number, a brochure or a list of
agencies that might, or might not, be of
some help. In providing information, referral and assistance, the social worker offers
information about community, public or
financial resources and directs the client
to appropriate ones. Social workers are the
experts in the utilization of such resources.
The information, referral and assistance
process involves what I think of as true
"case management"; that is, the linking
and coordinating of different parts of the
service delivery system. Social workers
provide assistance by answering questions and determining feelings about using
a resou rce. For exam pie, a pe rson may be
resistant to using a resource, perhaps because of things they've heard about it; or
they may not be used to asking for help and
may perceive doing so as a fault or weakness; orthey may have guilt feelings about
using a service when they think there are
needier people out there.
Once feelings about using resources
are worked through, though, the way can
usually be prepared for a productive experience with the referral. The social
worker can then monitor the dealings with
the resource in question and make that the
client is successfully accessing the servIce, whether that means getting a check
from Social Security, having COBRA payments made by a local program or charity,
receiving appropriate school services for
an HIV-positive child or getting into a support group. The main objective, of course,
ISto see that the services needed are received. Another, however, is to encourage
the development and use of an individual's
OWnskills so that he or she can success-
iWr

fully deal with the resources they are referred to. This leads to enhanced selfesteem.
Counseling, on the other hand, has to do
much more directly with feelings like guilt,
anger or hopelessness. It can also focus
on how such feelings can contribute to behaviorthat causes problems: compliance
problems, relationship problems, problems
at work or school, or problems obtaining
needed services. It can also focus on things
like loss and grief. It can include one individual or the significant other and family
members. It involves identifying problems,
identifying goals and identifying resolutions, then guiding and supporting people
in their work towards those resolutions.
Most medical social workers (those
working in a health care setting such as a
hospital or home care agency) provide
what is called supportive counseling. The
major distinction
between supportive
counseling and other types is that, while
it can become very involved and ongoing,
it is usually relatively short-lived (Le.,
measured in terms of weeks or months)
rather than long-term (a year or more).
Information, referral and assistance as
well as counseling services can help people maintain their living situations, obtain
needed services from various resources
and smooth t he transitions that come with
coping with HIV/AIDS. Below I describe a
couple of case examples.
John Doe in Houston was a single male
with AIDS who was initially hospitalized for
pneumonia. The hospital social worker was
consulted by the nurse in the physician's
office to provide assistance in locating financial resources. John had exhausted
paid leave from his employer, was late on
his monthly rent and had fears about applying fordisability. Emergency financial help
was obtained through County Social Services and AIDS Foundation Houston. Here
the process of providing information, referral and assistance led to the development
of a good relationship. Following brief supportive counseling focusing on his fears
about applying for disability and about
possibly having to reveal his diagnosis to
his employer, the Social Security application process was explained and he was assisted in applying. He was also counseled
regarding dealings with his employer about
his group disability benefit. Once he obtained disability status from his employer,
he was responsible for payment of his
COBRA insurance premium. Since he could
PAGE 31
not afford this, an application was made for
assistance from The Assistance Fund,
which agreed to pay the premiums. Maintaining his income, housing and insurance
enabled John to remain in his home and to
continue receiving medical care from the
doctor and hospital he was used to.
Jane Doe, adivorced woman with AIDS
who was receiving home care, frequently
called on the staff nurses for psychosocial
support, at times having them paged at
night. Nursing and pharmacy staff consulted a social worker. It became apparent
from a psychosocial assessment that Jane
had been suffering from severe depression
and extreme anxiety with related family
problems, social isolation and procrastination since her diagnosis. Her problems
seemed to worsen after she was started on
the medical treatment she was receiving
at home. After nine weeks of supportive
counseling
using cognitive behavioral
techniques, Jane's symptoms had decreased SUbstantially and her behavior
reflected only borderline depression and
no anxiety. She began participating in her
care and engaging in more interactions
with family and friends. She was also put
in touch with a support group that includ-
ed other people receiving similar medic
treatment in the home.
Social workers are available in a variet
of settings: hospitals, home health COIll.,
panies, HIV/AIDS service organizations
mental health clinics and in private prac:
tice. While there are many people who pro.
vide a variety of services similar to those.
of asocial worker, social work is aprofes.
sion with highly trained and regulated
practitioners. If you think you or someone
you know might benefit from working with
a social worker, ask your doctor or nurse
for a referral. For more information about
the profession of social work, call the National Association of Social Workers Texas
Chapter at (800)888-6279. For more information on the regulation of social work, or
to comment on the practice of a particu lar
social worker, call the Texas State Board
of Social Work Examiners at (800)232-3162.
Charles Domingues, L.M.S. W., is a medical social worker employed by Caremark
Healthcare Services. He is also Co-Chair
of the N.A.S. W. Houston Unit's Lesbian &
Gay Health Issues Committee and President of the Board of H.I. V. Service Providers, Inc.

'Rites of Spring' to Benefit

DearTWT:
On Sunday afternoon, May 29, Now Hear
This! Productions will be hosting a Tea
Dance from 6-11 p.m. entitled "The Rites
of Spring" and benefiting the AIDS
Resource Center of Dallas. The event will
take place at Club One, located at 3025
Main St. (in Deep Ellum) in Dallas. We have
put together what we believe will be the
most fun and memorable Memorial Day
holiday celebration that Dallas has ever
seen. When we started planning this event,
we wanted to bring together the best
elements of the nationally recognized
charity events such as Houston's Grey
Party or South Beach's White Party to
produce an evening of entertainment of the
highest quality.
We have secured the very best talentfor your dancing pleasure, our deejay/veejay
will be Jon Mott of Rich's in Houston. We
have created a magical atmosphere-an
enchanted springtime fantasy with
decorations by "Little" Jimmy Jenkins.
And we have brought in the best sound
system you've ever heard-four speaker
towers powered by 10,000 watts of
pumpin', thumpin' sound by technical
wizard Steven Hebert.
For all the music lovers out there who
just can't get enough, the benefit will be
followed by a second party from 11 p.m.4 a.m. called "The Secret Garden of
Unearthly Delights." This second party will
be more progressive, featuring the talents
of deejays Scottie Canfield, Ronnie Bruno,
Rob Vaughan and Robert Taylor-all
groundbreaking trendsetters in the Dallas
underground scene. If you haven't heard
these guys spin, you're in for a real treatthese are truly world-class deejays with
international reputations! We will also have
a very special live mixed computer video
presentation by Phillip Walker. All guests

1994 Beneficiaries
DearTWT:
On behalf of the patrons of the Miss
Camp America Foundation, Inc., I want to
express a sincere thank-you to the
organizations that submitted the information
to help the Charity Committee Select our
1994 AIDS-related charities.
After lengthy consideration, the committee
selected from 23 applicants five Houston
AIDS-related organizations as recipients of
this year's grants, to be awarded on
September 17. They are the Colt 45's AIDS
.TroubleFund, the Houston NAMES Project,
the PWA Coalition of Houston, The
Assistance Fund and the Pet Patrol.
Unfortunately, it was not possible to
award all 23 groups that applied this year.
However, we would appreciate you
applying again next year.
We extend our best wishes to all the

DearTWT:
The clients, staff and board of directors
of the People With AIDS Coalition of
Houston wish to express our appreciation
to the officers, directors and members of
the Miss Camp America Foundation, Inc.
for choosing the Coalition as one of their
beneficiaries of their annual pageant.
During these times of dwindling state
and federal funding, it is so important that
smaller organizations like the Coalition
receive community support.
We are honored to have been chosen as
a beneficiary, and urge everyone in the
community to support the Miss Camp

10. Houston's The Company We Keep is
presenting the event as a part of this year's
Lesbian/Gay Pride Week. In addition to a
medley of tributes to the legendary performer, the audience will be treated to "Mr.
Stonewall" and "Judy Look-alike" contests,
and there'll be a sneak preview scene from
the theatre company's upcoming Southwest premiere of Thomas O'Neill's Judy at
the Stonewall/nn.
Featuring Donna Day,

the beginning of the modern gay rights
movement. Mr. Stonewall and Judy Lookalike contestants should call now for advance registration. Tickets are $8-$25 in
advance, and will be $13-$30 at the door.

Joe Orton was one of Britain's funniest
playwrights, and Loot, a brilliantly witty,
wicked and lunatic farce, is perhaps his
funniest piece. Dallas audiences will be
treated to a unique production of this work
when the Dallas Theatre Center opens this
subversive work of outrageous proportions on May 31 at its Kalita Humphreys
Theatre, 3636 Turtle Creek Boulevard. Loot
is a gleefully riotous satire involving a pile
of stolen money, a nurse with too much
bedside manner, an unscrupulous detective and a corpse. The play, with performances Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and
Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Friday and
Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Saturday
and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m., runs
through June 19. Tickets, priced $9-$36,

proponents of Spanish Colonial villancicos-the

a lively program in a

term that describes a wide range of sacred
music that was influenced by the cultures
of Native Americans and African slave
laborers and used as an integral part of the
Christian conversion process. The concert,
which is free and open to the public, will
serve as a "practice run" for a recording

on The New York Times bestseller list at one time for eight weeks in 1956. Born Edward
Everett Tanner III, he found greater fame as the author of Auntie Mame under a different
name. His genius, according to the Gay Book of Days, "lay in cleverly packaging gay camp
for public consumption so that the audience could congratulate itself on discovering
something 'new' without vaguely suspecting its origins. Under what name did this author

DEBRA WINGER
BORN MAY 16. 1955
lNEEK OF
MAY 13 - MAY 19. 1994-
The planets maintain their positions this week, which gives us an opportunity to look at
the month of May in its entirety. At this point, less than 45 days (and counting) remain till
the Gay Games/Stonewall25 celebration. May prepares us well and will bring out the best
in us; a Taurus Sun opened the month with a sturdy self-assuredness. On May 22, the Sun
will move into Gemini to spark our imagination and galvanize our thoughts. Read ahead
to see how each sign prepares for the countdown.
TAURUS:(April 21 - May 21) Decide what
you really want and merely ask for it; it shall
be yours. With the lull in planetary activity
this week, you're able to use the time for
quiet reflection, followed by swift action;
a time to plan and implement action for
future projects. You won't have to plan
alone; partners are there to help. Friends,
however, may not pull through for you.
They have problems of their own and need
time to work them out.
GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21) This month is a
perfect time to volunteer with gay social
service organizations. "Give unto others"
is the key to true happiness. Selfless charity may even have a payoff for you; the people you meet (and impress with your attitude and abilities) could conceivably help
you out with one or two of your own personal projects. Surprise! It is often better to
give than to receive.
CANCER:(June 22 - JuIy 22) Let us look at the
month of May. Friends are there for you
When you need them, but be prepared;
they may ask for your help in return. Do you
have what it takes to help a friend in need?
Cancers are always there to pitch in, but
don't give too much. Early May is the best
time for you to succeed in professional aims
and you'll only gain through your own efforts and sweat.
LEO: (July 23 - August 23) What do the
Planets reveal to you this month? Sometimes it's not being there that has the biggest impact on your career. Beating a hasty
PAGE 68

retreat may prove to those in authority just
how important you are in the scheme of
things. Keep your thoughts centered on the
old political rat track, but if you can tear
yourself away from the arena you'll have
them begging for more.
VIRGO: (August 24 - September 23) Sex is
better than ever and you can enhance the
enjoyment by escaping with your special
someone to some far-off, exotic hideaway.
This is the month to get away from it all and
have fun. You may find yourself utteringjust
the right thing at exactly the righttime, thus
transforming a blah situation into something
memorable and utterly transforming. You
can become quite the charmer.
LIBRA: (September 24 - October 23) Are you
seeking a partner or do you have someone
special in mind? The early part of the month
will turn out to be the perfect time to seek
or reinforce one-to-one relationships. Once
you've selected your quarry, the rest of the
month looks ripe for deep personal involvements and heavy emotional interactions. Sex can be especially fulfilling; enjoy
while the planetary energy lasts.
SCORPIO:(October 24 - November 22) What
are the planets trying to tell you this month?
You've been putting most of your efforts
into the job and now you must ask yourself, is that all there is? Life is more than the
day-to-day grind. The accolades you have
garnered in the greater world are all well
and good, but cannot compensate for personal relationships. Get closer to those

PROPOSITION 22
PASSES IN AUSTIN
Revision to City Charter Abolishes
Domestic Partnership Benefits.
AUSTIN - Voters in the capital city
turned out in near-record numbers last
Saturday to elect city officials and to decide the fate of Austin's pioneering domestic partners benefits program. For
weeks polls had indicated that the vote on
this issue would be very close, but even as
early counts came in Saturday evening it
was apparent that Proposition 22 would
pass by a strong margin. The final vote
was 51,475 (62%) for the amendment and
31,082 (38%) against.
Last September the Austin City Council
approved extending insurance and leave
benefits to unmarried partners of city
employees who could prove a long-term
and committed relationship, including gay
men and lesbians. That decision angered
conservative Christians, who wanted the
issue to be decided by Austin citizens.
Because extending the domestic partnership benefits was an employee policy decision, they could not be subjected to a referendum, and the only legal avenue available to Concerned Texans, the group leading the fight against the benefits, was to
petition for a city charter revision.
The charter amendment which appeared
on the ballot defined "spouse" in city personnel rules to be the legally recognized
husband or wife of an employee, and also
limited benefits to an employee's immediate family and that of his or her spouse,
in effect abolishing the domestic partnership policy.
Last week, the 98 City of Austin employees who had registered for domestic partners benefits were informed by the city's
personnel department that their benefits
would be canceled on May 9 if the proposition passed.
In a public statement on election night,
the leader ot Concerned Texans, the Rev.
Charles Bullock, said, "We are sending a
powerful message to the nation that Austin is not a liberal city where anything
goes." Calling the vote "a victory for Austin taxpayers," Bullock continued to stress
that his group's opposition to the benefits
was based on financial criteria.
The Austin Lesbian/Gay Political Caucus
was influential in the original passage
of domestic partner benefits. Co-chair
PAGE 76
Dianne Hardy-Garcia told TWT NEWS the
organization had realized that the campaign over Proposition 22 would be difficult from the beginning. Despite the final
vote, Hardy-Garcia feels the campaign was
a positive force in the Austin community.
"We turned out over 31,000 people to
vote for us-that's
a lot," she said. "The
other side was able to turn out more,
mostly people 55 and older who objected
to what they saw as an unnecessary expense and to 'people living in sin.' HardyGarcia added that she bel ieves Satu rday's
vote will prompt more political involvement by gay men and lesbians in the Austin community and around the state.
Travis County's registration of domestic
partnerships will not be affected by Austin's new policies, and couples in a committed relationship, gay or straight, will
still be able to register that status at the
County Clerk's office.
ACTIVISTS PROTEST
GALVESTON GOP
RESOLUTION CALLING
FOR HIV QUARANTINE
A CT UPIGulf Coast, Others Gather
In League City Saturday to Hear
Speakers Condemn Proposal.
LEAGUE CITY - Combining a bit of
street theatre and impassioned speechmaking, members of ACT UP/Gulf Coast
and other activists staged a rally last weekend to protest a resolution passed recently
by the Galveston County Republican Party
calling for the quarantining of people with
HIV. The event was held Saturday afternoon in a park in League City, a small community located between Houston and
Galveston.
In a striking visual illustration of what
the GOP proposal might mean if put into
effect, several members of ACT UP, holding signs and wearing blue-striped "concentration camp drag," stood behind a
mock barbed wire fence that had been
strung up next to the summerhouse that
served as the speakers' platform.
"We're here today to present a visible
phalanx of anger in opposition
to the
Galveston County Republican Party," said
ACT UP member Keith Stewart. Other
speakers condemned the fear and ignorance that still surround the subject of
AIDS, and compared the resolution to the
TWT MAY 13 - MAY 191994
actions of the Nazis against Jews and
other minority populations.
"Ignorance and intolerance is certainly
a virus that can be cured through education," Gene Harrington told the crowd.
ACT UP said last week it had learned
that an attempt would be made to disrupt
the rally, but it took place without incident.
The American Civil Liberties Union had
observers present during the event.

Resolution 73 calls for "the identification of those individuals carrying the AIDS
virus, the tracing of sexual contact" and
"quarantine of HIV carriers until a cure is
found ... .' The statement also calls on the
Centers for Disease Control and the World
Health Organization to abandon their "neutral" position on AIDS. Texas Republicans
hold their state convention in Fort Worth
on June 10 and 11.
A last-minute addition to the speakers'
roster was Pat Jackson, a Galveston County
Republican precinct chair, who told the
crowd that the Republican Party has traditionally stood for individual rights and that
mainstream party members do not support
many of the positions taken by right-wing
Christian factions that have made inroads
in the party structure. She urged the demonstrators to support the efforts of more
moderate Republicans fighting to prevent
the complete takeover of their party by
fundamentalists.
DALLAS MCC,
VICTORY FUND HOST
TEXAS PREMIERE OF
PRO-GAY FILM
Directors to Attend Screening
Of 'One Nation Under God. '
DALLAS - It seems that the Radical
Right will go to any extreme to portray gay
men and lesbians as promiscuous perverts
intent on recruiting young boys and girls
to what the Right considers a subversive
cause. They've even produced a film which
iWT MAY
13 - MAY 191994
depicts all homosexuals in such a light.
Leading the gay response to this cinematic drivel are two filmmakers, Teodoro
Maniaci and Francine M. Rzeznik, whose
film One Nation Under God, is a thoughtprovoking documentary that debunks the
"cure" currently being used to convert lesbians and gay men into "heterosexuals."
Dallas' Cathedral of Hope Metropolitan
Community Church and the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund will host the Texas
premiere of the film next Monday, May 16
at the West End Theatre (Munger and Market streets) at 7:30 p.m. as part of a threecity nationwide premiere tour(Los Angeles
and New York being the other two cities)
prior to its debut on national television
early this summer.
"The documentary reveals the efforts to
demoralize and debilitate the self-esteem
of lesbians and gay men as myriad, extensive and often devastating," said Cathedral
of Hope's Randy Sprabary. " 'Curing' lesbians and gay men under the banner of
family values, morality and patriotism has
become a leading platform for well-financed anti-gay campaigns being waged
by the Radical Right and conservative
political leaders. One Nation Under God
analyzes the underlying social and cultural
factors that have contributed to the persistent and harmful myth that gay people are
somehow damaged individuals who need
to be 'cured.'
"The war being waged by the Radical
Right supports these tragic and disturbing
efforts to 'convert' gays and lesbians to
heterosexuality,"
he added. "One Nation
Under God takes these individuals, their
organizations and their dangerously misguided ideas to task."
Tickets to the Dallas premiere are $50,
with proceeds benefiting both the Cathedral of Hope and the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, a nationwide organization that
helps finance the political campaigns of
openly gay and lesbian candidates. MCC
will dedicate its portion of the proceeds to
PAGE 77
launch the church's "To Tell the Truth"
television ministry. In addition to the Rev.
Michael S. Piazza, senior pastor of the
Cathedral, and Dr. Mel White, who serves
as dean of MCC, directors Maniaci and
Rzeznik are expected to attend.
For more information or tickets to this
event, call Randy Sprabary at Cathedral of
Hope, (214)351-1901.
HOUSTON CAUCUS
To CHOOSE NEW
PRESIDENT, VP
GLPC Adopts Bylaw Forbidding
Officers, Board Members to
Publicly Support Opponents
Of Endorsed Candidates.
HOUSTON - A protracted period of internal squabbling came to a head last
week when those attending a packed
meeting of the Houston Gay & Lesbian
Political Caucus learned that the group's
president, Gary Van Ooteghem, had resigned. Van Ooteghem sent brief letters of
resignation to vice-president Terri Richardson and board chair Kevin Davidson prior
to the meeting, and was not in attendance.
Also resigning was board member Scott
Hedrick.
Richardson announced her intention to
seek the presidency, while Gene Harrington nominated himself for vice-president
and Jim Ewing entered the race for the vacant board seat.
The controversies that have kept the gay
political organization embroiled in dissension first took shape prior to the March 8
primary elections. Van Ooteghem was attacked for accepting a "nonpolitical"
ad
by Rosemary Garza-who was running for
Judge of County Criminal Court 15 against
a candidate endorsed by the Caucus-for
the group's election newsletter.
The Caucus head was also criticized for
apparently failing to seek board approval
for expenses connected with putting out
the group's newsletter, as well for not
securing at least three bids on the job.
Further controversy ensued when it was
discovered that board member Marion
Coleman had placed a Garza campaign
sign in her yard. Some Caucus members
insisted that she was violating a standing
rule adopted in 1989 that forbids officers
or board members to publicly support the
opponent of a candidate endorsed by the
PAGE 78
Caucus. There were calls for Coleman to
renounce her actions or resign, but Van
Ooteghem and others defended her, saying the standing rule amounted to a violation of free speech rights.
At last week's meeting, the Caucus
voted overwhelmingly to turn the standing
rule into a bylaw, thereby incorporating it
into the body of basic law according to
which GLPC functions. A compromise
proposal that would have adopted the
bylaw but would also have allowed officers
and board members to seek temporary dispensation from thei r obi igation not to su pport the opponents of Caucus-endorsed
candidates was voted down.
The next GLPC general meeting is on
June 1 at the Stouffer Presidente Hotel, at
which time second call for nominations
will be issued and a vote held to choose
the new president, vice president and
board member.

compiled by the Chorale's resident arranger and composer, Randol Bass.
The Dallas performances will feature
two very special guests: the reigning Miss
Texas Bashara Chandler, whose platform
this year has been AIDS awareness; and
Austin's own Shannon Sedwick from

AUSTINteaCIOUS - Here's what's going
on THIS WEEK IN AUSTIN from Capital City HOT
TEA ....
Proteus's benefit for the Austin chapter of
TGRA brought in over $150. Thanks, Austin,
for giving to such a worthy cause. Tonight
at 11:30, the club welcomes the infamous
Nicole, who'll be performing along with
Sabrina Rossand others. It seems that, even
though the clubs are not related in any way,
the staffers at Proteus and Fifth Street are on
the same wavelength with their headsets, and
some hot talk is burning up those wires!. ...
Over at 5th Street, Mitch and Robbie
continue to serve up sausageand beer on
the patio on Saturday nights. For all you
boot-scootin' folks, the dance floor is getting
a face lift, with the final touches due to be
completed next week. We hear they may
take up a collection to get Randy a new pair
of jeans. It seems the holy ones are on their
way out. Seen one butt, you've seen them
all! Love you, Randy! ...
Oilcan Harry's is heating up with the
warmer months ahead. The club has been
packed as usual on weekends, with lots of
high-energy flowing and drinks pouring. We
caught up with [above, I-r) Steve Williams
and Tom Doughtie sucking down martinis
at Steve's bar. We've learned that Steve and
Keith are still trying to quit smoking. These
two are brave fellows, and you will be too if
you try to pull something over on them! .. _
You'll always find a cool bar and cold
cocktails at the Crossing. The club
welcomes new doorman Mike Griffin
[above]. Watch out for the Door Whore,
PAGE 83
Mike: she may teach you things you'd never
heard of before! It's been learned that
Johnny got caught with his guard down by
his partner-in-crime Kindell with a look-alike
check. It seems that Johnny cashed it and
all it was was an order form. Maybe next
time he should have a couple of shots
before taking any checks! Also, who was
the employee who reported his truck stolen
only hours after getting it? Seems he can't
remember what color it was or where he
parked it! ...
DALLAS TEA -
Here's what's happening
from Big D HOT TEA ....
One of Texas' largest talents, Donna Day
[above] appears regularly in the Rose Room
of Village Station, located at the heart of the
Cedar Springs Crossroads. She's one of the
dozens of stars who grace the famed show
room's stage every Wednesday through
Sunday. Trumormongers are mongering that
club staffer Alannah might get a few more
bookings herself if she'd ever find a working
alarm clock so she can get to work on time.
Belated b'day wishes go out to fellow staffer
Gary Howell, whose natalversary was this
week ....
Next door at Sue Ellen's, the infamous
Kathy Jack was in Louisville last weekend for
the Derby, but never made it to the
racetrack. It's obvious that KJwas making
more than bets in Kentucky. Speaking of
making, Caterina Miltenberger got more
than she bargained for while making a
frozen drink recently. Seems she was
attacked-yes, attacked-by the swirl
machine!. ...
THIS WEEK IN DALLAS
Charlie's keeps 'em coming in for more
every weekend with friendly staffers like
Corey [above]. Where'd he get that shirt?
While you're there, ask Daryl to sell you a
raffle ticket to benefit Team Austin. Grand
prize is a trip to New York complete with
hotel and events during all seven days of
the Games in June, and lots of other prizes
including a trip to the 1998 Games in
Amsterdam. See Daryl for more details. The
drawing is June i, and you must be present
to win. Congratulations to Matt, who won
the Mr. Howdy contest. You go, cutie pie! ...

Auntie Mame's hasa delightful, picturesque
and relaxing patio as you can see from the
CRUISE CAMERA photo above, where we got
Jon Hernandez to pose for us. The club is
coming right along, with cookouts and beer
bust on Sundays. Remember to stop in on
Sunday for Karaoke with Michael, Bobby,
Roger and a clientele that really knows how
to party.

TWT MAY 13 - MAY

TWT MAY 13 - MAY 191994
We just adore anniversaries, so naturally
we were at Zipper's seventh anniversary
celebration last week, as were many of Our
Town's heavy hitters. Just ask David Moore
and Gary Monier [above, l-r], who were all
smiles thanks to the tremendous turnout.
Not imaged is the delightful Vivian Vance,
who sported a new hair-don't for the
occasion. By the way, Vi v, just how much
did you end up stuffing down those
dancers' T-backs? ..
PAGE 85
Meanwhile at Crews Inn, look for some
gorgeous new faces behind the bar at the
Fitzhugh fun-stop. Seemsthey're adding
new and oh-so-qualified staffers to their
roster to keep pace with customer demand.
If we could just convince Mona to attire
them all in danceur apparel, we know we'd
be happier ....
definitely likes leather. Other leather
aficionados of note at the club are special
events promoter Lee Michaels, Rick
Donovan, Richard Ballou and Patrie Nast
[above, l-r], who posed for our camera just
moments after the conclusion of Mr. D's
recent revealing performance. One face you
didn't see much of that night was manager
Larry Arbo, whose manly mug was concealed
by Rick's gamely gams most of the night. ...
Word comes to us that Miss TGRA
candidate CeCe Reeseis taking her
homecoming queen title seriously. So much
so that she's hosting Prom Night '94 this
very night, Friday, at the Hideaway.
Longtime patron Bill Boyd and longtime
staffer Whitney Pittman [above, I-r] will
definitely be there, but why does the image
of oh-so-sexy Perry Wood in a tuxedo come
to mind? Construction continues on the
club's patio, and we can't help wondering if
head honchos are wishing they'd kept the
boat what with the rain and aiL ...
After you admire what the people are
wearing at the Hideaway, consider heading
over to Millennium to admire what they're
not wearing. The club is hosting its first
underwear party tonight, and we have to
admit that the thought of Dallas' bestlooking men and women clad only in their
tightest CK weave leaves us just a tad weak!
Also at the club tonight is the already-atradition afterhours show with hostessMisty
Summers. Sweet Savagedropped by last
week, so it's anyone's guess who'll pop in
tonight. ...
Don't forget that tonight's the night to
catch oh-so-handsome Bradford Newquist at
John L's. He's jetting in from the Windy City
for two big nights of music, merriment and
mirth. Did we also mention that he's
incredibly handsome? Just wanted to make
sure....
Yet another special event tonight is the
Brick's Black Pump Party for the leather
ladies of Dallas. It's hosted by Terry
Anderson, who is definitely a lady and
PAGE 86
Peggy Smith and Lisa Landeck. Peggy would
like to welcome equally stunning Jake Bazar
on board as the club's new assistant manager.
As she puts it, "Now we can be bad
together-he can cruise boys and I can
cruise girls!" Dallas, look out!. ..
Another person who should definitely
look out is TMC's David "Miss Ellie" Ellis.
Seemsthe bearskin model was attacked
recently by the kissing wench at
Scarborough Fair. Now, how many times do
we have to tell you, Ellie, when you see
bodacious ta-tas coming-RUN! Very special
birthday wishes go out to studly staffer Todd
Whitmer, whose whateversomething
birthday was last Tuesday....
Michael Wilson apparently learned the
lesson of the JR'striple very well. Seems in
his new position at a local eatery of note
he's been served quite well by a co-worker
who finds equal delight in attending the
needs of another co-worker of the female
persuasion. Pictured above is the more
noteworthy trio of Clint Allen, manager
Donald Solomon and Doug Hoskins [I-r],
who attend to the needs of the club's loyal
patrons. Not pictured is a certain floor
person that assistant manager Kimber
Rozelle lost in the cooler for over an hour.
So that's how she keeps her staff in line ....
Finally, hats off to the hard-working staff
and generous patrons of the Round-Up,
who made last weekend's benefit show such
a rousing success. raising an enormous
$3,296 for the Dallas chapter of the NAMES
Project. The capacity crowd was treated to
an evening of nonstop frivolity including the
entertainers above and featuring the
reappearance of the sveltely talented Alice
Phallus, pictured below with Valerie Lohr
and Kohl Faulkner. It was all a combination
Mother's Day celebration and salute to a
true Dallas legend, Mr. Tom Davis.
While we're talking about lines, look at
the other stunning trio we lined up for a
photo at Damewoodz. For the one or two of
you who don't recognize these barbelles,
it's Kathy Jack (pre-Derby days), manager
TEXAS TElETYPE - Here's what's
happening around the state....
We always have a good time in Texarkana,
and it's definitely because the staff and
patrons of the Gig really know how to have
TWT MAY 13 - MAY 191994

a good time. Not only that, but they have a
conscience as well. Take the club's annual
Miss Charity Pageant that raised $1,076 for
the Texarkana AIDS Project. The fabulous
night of fund-raising and entertainment was
hosted by Syndi St. Paul and Brazilda Nutt
and culminated in the crowning of Scarlet
Fever [above] as the 1994 winner. The divine
Kyko was first runner-up. Not reported,
however, was whether or not the club's hot
new bartender-who, we understand, is so
hot he'll make you beg for mercy-revealed
some hidden talents to increase that
impressive monetary total. ...
Another show-for-a-cause takes place next
Wednesday, May 18, as Fort Worth's 651
presents the Red Ribbon Variety Show to
benefit the Healing Wings facility at John
Peter Smith Hospital. There'll be literally
dozens of fabulous performers and a silent
auction and prizes, so make it a point to
visit the club mid-week for an evening to
remember.
PAGEANT TEA - The new Miss Gay
Alamo City/USA is Toi Brooks [above],
crowned at the Paper Moon in San Antonio.
First runner-up/Miss Congeniality was
Denise Michaels and second runner-up was
Victoria Le....
For those of you who don't yet have your
own tiara, circle May 15 and June 10 on
your calendars. Those are the dates that
promoter Charles Aaron has selected for the
Miss Mid-Cities and Miss Gay Ft. Worth
contests, respectively. Miss Mid-Cities will
be held at Magnolia Station, while the 20th
annual Miss Gay Fort Worth Pageant will be
held at Ft. Worth's Scott Theatre.

Edward John Hauschild (above)
"Eddie"
March 1, 1951 - May 4, 1994
My beloved Eddie left this world for a better place
due to AIDS complications.
Originally from New York City, Eddie resided in
Houston for several years. He had been employed
with May Laminating Company for 16 years.
Survived by his brother, Bill, two nieces, one
nephew, Aunt Margie Jones, as well as many friends
who are our Houston family.
A memorial service was held on May 7 at MCCR.
At Eddie's request, his remains will be interred with
his beloved "Nana."
You are the wind beneath my wingsFly high my angel!
Andy Healy (above)
Andy Healy was born May 9, 1963, left this world
April 4, 1994 and was laid to rest April 6 at Canyon,
Texas.
Andy's dream came true as he and his family
founded the Shepherd House where, along with his
mother, brothers and sisters, he fed persons with
HIV three meals a week. After his death, another of
his dreams has come true-a flower garden has
been planted with the word "hope" in the center.
Andy will be deeply missed but certainly remembered by all every time his spirit joins us at the table
of Shepherd House. We ask God to bless this kind,
loving soul of Andy's.

Journey's End
His lips no longer speak,
His eyes no longer see,
Yet in our minds he is not gone.
For in a room of strangers we'll hear a
Tum of phrase that he might have spoken
And he is near ...
Or perhaps a pool will shine in a way
That was somehow like him ...
Or maybe the sky at dawn will turn that
Shade of red he was so particularly fond of
And with us he is still,
In our minds as he was, young and strong,
Tall and kind,
And we know he will be among the first to
Greet us at our journey's end ....

Richard J. Mahns (above)
Richard J. Mahns passed away on April 30 from
AIDS complications. Born in Indiana 37 years ago,
Rich had been a Houston resident since the early
'BOs.He taught school as a Special Ed teacher with
HISD. But he was better known as a dancer, appearing in many TUTS musicals in Houston. He also
took leaves from teaching to appear in a national
touring company of Marne and in a European tour
of Evita.
Rich is survived by his mother, Patricia Mahns,
and by a sister, Lorraine Townes. Interment will be
in Indiana.
Rich will be missed by his many friends in show
business, in teaching and at Lambda Center. He
was a sweet and gentle man, with not an ounce of
malice in his heart.

9/14/58 - 4/28194
I was a native Houstonian, a GED graduate, 1976,
Indiahoma, Oklahoma. Jack of all trades, master of
none.
Predeceased by Sonny Dees in November, 1985,
survived by parents, Sarah L. and Lawrence D. Warshaw; sisters, Debra Branstrom, Houston, and Dee
Adams, Vancouver, Washington; several nieces and
nephews; and a host of truly weird friends. I hope
that anyone I ever met will know that I met them.
Per my request, no services or memorials are to
be arranged.
Donations made to any charitable AIDS organization would be deeply appreciated.
It is my wish to be cremated. I want some of my
ashes spread over Sonny's grave; the rest, if at all
Possible, to be scattered near the McDonald Observatory. It is one of Texas' most beautiful Sights.
To all my friends I leave, in hopes that they will
always have confidence, compassion, caring and
the realization that this is it!
Grab your gusto!

You will be missed
Kenny,
Even as we mourn your loss, we are thankful for the
time we shared.
God looked at His garden
And saw an empty space.
He then looked down from Heaven
And saw your tired face.
He put His arm around you
And took you in His care.
To make up for all your hard work
He wanted you up there.
It broke our hearts to see you go.
But you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
