From the desk of Father Davis
Happy Father’s Day weekend! I’ll be returning from the Holy
Land later today (Sunday). My fellow pilgrims and I will have
many stories to tell. Soon another trip will be planned. Let us
dream.
Now that I am beginning my second year as your pastor, I
thought it would be appropriate to reflect with you on the results
of my first year. Together we have accomplished much! Allow
me to list what has happened that is new and different in our
parish since this time last year:

We have taken steps to end the catering contract at
Comber Hall, giving the parish full operational control and all
future revenue, as of July 2013;

The parish center office hours have been extended to
include evenings and weekends to accommodate growth and
after-hours access;

A 42-person parish pilgrimage to the Holy Land was
made, bringing enrichment to parishioners and their families;

We have purchased two new chalices and three new ciboria for use as sacred vessels during Holy Mass;

We now have a Parish Council, a Finance Council, and
an Operational Budget;


The Cross on top of our dome is now illuminated;
asbestos has been removed from the church, and a new
state of the art sound system has been installed;


A new phone contract in the parish office and rectory
has resulted in sizeable savings to our church;

A refurbished Holy Water Font has been installed in
the vestibule, together with the placement of a new
wooden console cabinet on which we have placed our
bulletins and flyers;

There are new decorative garbage cans at the doors of
church, as well as maroon carpet mats at each of the
doors. We have also acquired large plastic tubs into
which we now neatly place our weekly donations to
Saint John Bosco;

We have refurbished and re-stained our pews
throughout the church and the Parish Center Chapel,
also redoing the kneelers with maroon colored padding;

We are now using a prominent and dignified presider’s
chair at Mass, which rests on newly acquired Asian
carpet, adding beauty to the sanctuary. We also have a
newly upholstered Archbishop’s chair with the prelate’s
coat of arms fastened on the head board, which is used
for Confirmation ceremonies and major pontificals;
We have obtained 4 new sets of priestly vestments (of all
major liturgical colors) with matching diaconal vesture, adding
great stately dignity to our liturgies;
We have obtained a new set of Altar Server albs with
corresponding cinctures, now used by all acolytes in the
church;

We have increased the number of additional priests by
three, also adding a new full-time Director of Development,
with a full-time Youth Minister on the way;

In November we had a joyous Ministries Appreciation
Evening, bestowing the Spirit of the Parish Award on exemplary parishioners;

We began the seasonal Pastor’s Lecture series, started a
seasonal 12:15pm Mass (from Labor Day to Memorial Day),
and had our first Healing Mass, now to be a quarterly liturgical
offering at our parish;

We had two successful garage sales, raising funds and a
sense of community;

Leaks in the church roof were repaired, followed up by
additional roofing inspections, which identified work done to
prevent future major problems;

A parish Photo Directory initiative was accomplished,
with the delivery of the directory now set for July;


On Sundays and solemn occasions, we now use the
stately candles that mark traditional Catholic altars.
This is complimented by the use of incense at major
liturgies;
A successful ABCD campaign took place this past
spring, bringing financial reinforcement to the parish, even as
it has met our goals for the Archdiocese. Some $50G will be
coming back to the parish to use toward our numerous repair
projects;

We have re-landscaped the front entrance of the
church, adding a rose garden and enhancements to the
front walkway;
New missalettes and hymnals have recently been introduced, providing a broader repertoire of musical selections in
English and Spanish, with large print, and having hard covers;

We have repaired and upgraded the historic church
sign at the front of our property;

We have ended the expensive cleaning contract which
burdened the school, the change has resulted in huge
annual savings to the school budget;

We obtained new landscaping and air-conditioning
contracts, a significant savings for both school and
parish, also resulting in better service;

The church offices have been re-configured, adding a
much needed conference room, new offices on the
second floor, and the opening of the Little Flower Gift
Shop;

We addressed the long-needed electrical and air
conditioning repair work at the rectory, including the
installation of several new kitchen appliances, as well
as a washer and dryer;


The patio project and its memorialized bricks will soon
come to fruition this summer. Approvals have been acquired.
Installation is soon to commence;

Although a beautiful virtual tour was developed and is
operational on our current website, a contract has been signed
to design a fresh website, presenting a new face with many
conveniences for the community through on-line communication;

Several major repair projects are currently out for bid,
including the painting of the convent and some of our other
buildings;

Countless spiritual initiatives are on the horizon during
the year ahead.
Working together, we build the Kingdom of God in the midst of the
“kingdom of man.” Thank you for your support, as we seek to follow Christ, our Light.

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
June 17, 2012
They that are planted in the house of the LORD
shall flourish in the courts of our God.
—Psalm 92:14
GOD’S TIME
We either pay attention to or ignore “clock time” as
we play in the summer sun and note the earth’s tilt and
the lengthening days. We live by time. We reckon time
in seconds and minutes and hours, or we use broader
chunks like suppertime and summertime.
God keeps another sort of time. God speaks to us of
“saving time,” that is, the time of salvation. This sense of
time is called kairos, and this time is always now, always
present and available, always revealing, often surprising.
This Sunday’s readings alert us to the reality and the
import of God’s time. Ezekiel and the Gospel of Mark
remind us that our labor and our plotting and our
planning rest in God. For God takes our smallest efforts
and makes of them great works. Paul points us to the
“harvest” time, urges us to be watchful for its coming,
and calls us to recognize that we must spend our time
pleasing God.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The reign of God comes about because people
commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing
new vision, new values. Many popular television shows
exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting
contestants against one another, even to the point of
performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain
money or favor.
At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing
ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ’s total
gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives,
our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine
carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our
lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God’s own
life. We are to become what we receive: the body of
Christ.
On Sundays, this self-giving is often accompanied
by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and
money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly
other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more
efficient. Yet the act of giving from our abundance, and
attending to the needs of the poor, opens us up to
participation in the changes the Reign of God requires.

Farewell to Father Rolón
Father Alfredo Rolón, who has served as our Parochial
Vicar for seven of the past ten years, will soon be moving
to Key West to take up a new assignment at the Basilica of
Saint Mary Star of the Sea. His service here at the Church
of the Little Flower has been greatly appreciated, and our
community wishes him well as he takes leave of us. His
last Spanish Mass with us will be Sunday, June 24th at
12:30pm. The liturgy will be followed by a reception with
light refreshments in Comber Hall. If you are able, stop by
and offer Father a few words of farewell.
SYNOD
The Synod listening sessions are underway! Please be sure
to look at the schedule of remaining sessions in order to
participate in this historic process. What if you can’t attend one of the Archbishop’s listening sessions? Don’t
worry: there are other ways to participate. Many parishes
are hosting their own listening sessions between July and
September. The feedback collected at these sessions will
also become part of the data used by the Synod teams in
creating goals for the future of the archdiocese. Additionally, on July 1st we will launch the online feedback form,
for those who are not able to attend a session in person. .
For more information regarding the Synod, go to
www.synodmiami.org or e-mail your questions to
[email protected]. PLEASE NOTE: The Synod scheduled here at Church of the Little Flower will be held this
Monday, June 18th at the church, NOT at Comber Hall
as previously announced.
Today, June 17th is Father’s Day.
Remember your father at Mass on
Father’s Day
Next Week’s SECOND Collection
Next week, Sunday, June 24th our Diocese will
take up the Peter Pence Collection, which provides
the Holy Father with the funds he needs to carry out
his most important charitable works. The proceeds
benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression and natural disasters. Through your generosity, we can cast the peace of Christ upon the world.

ahora, siempre presente y disponible, siempre revelador. A
menudo sorprendente.
