On September 21, 1996, tragedy struck the Idaho
State University football squad when the unthinkable
happened. During a 47-0 rout of Western Montana,
second team All-American defensive back Marcus
Jackson suffered a traumatic spinal injury while making a tackle late in the first half. The injury caused
paralysis.
Up to that point, Marcus had a pair of interceptions in ISU's first two games, and was looking for
another All-America season. Ironically, Idaho State
opened their season against the University of Mississippi, which just a season earlier suffered through the
same tragedy with their All-American defensive back,
Chuckie Mullins.
Following the injury, Marcus was hospitalized at Bannock Regional Medical
Center from September 21 through October 1, and he was then flown back to his
hometown in Colorado.
Jackson returned to Idaho State in the fall of 1997. His sense of humor and
courage throughout the ordeal were admired by everyone he met along the way, and
he became a regular fixture on the sidelines at ISU home games. In the summer of
1999, Marcus Jackson earned his bachelor's degree from Idaho State, ready to
embark on the next phase of his heroic journey through life.
To honor Marcus, one player is chosen after the conclusion of spring practice
to wear a patch with Jackson's initials on it. The team selects the player that they
feel best personifies the athletic ability that Jackson showed, as well as the courage
he showed throughout his ordeal.
In 1997, senior Telly Lockette was the first player to wear the patch, and senior
Jason Trotter was the 1998 recipient. In 1999, the honor went to Nick Whitworth of
Mackay, Idaho. In 2000 season, DeRonn Finley, a senior from Scottsdale, Arizona,
was voted to wear the patch by his teammates. For the 2001 season, the honor went
to walk-on junior Mike Clark. The 2002 honoree was defensive lineman Mark
Weivoda, and in 2003, junior Jeff Davenport became just the third junior to be voted
to wear the patch. This year, senior Vince Caviglia was honored by his teammates
as this year’s Marcus Jackson Award winner
