Linguistic Diversity in
Classrooms: a Challenge
across the Curriculum
Factual Knowledge
• About 1/3 of the European population
under the age of 35 years has an
immigrant background
• The diversity of languages and cultural
experiences is an important aspect of their
daily life for all children in (at least: urban
areas of) Germany, no matter if they
themselves grow up monolingual or
multilingual
More Factual Knowledge
• The German school system fails to
decouple opportunities of achievement
from the contingencies of origin.
• Example: PISA 2003. The achievement of
students with an immigrant background is
worse the longer they have attended
school in Germany.
Academic discourse competence
• The language of school and education =
academic discourse has more in common
with the characteristics of written language
than with every-day spoken language
• Characteristics of academic discourse =
informational [lexical] dense; abstract;
nominal; textual (pp.).
A Mathematical Problem
• Im Salzbergwerk Bad Friedrichshall wird
Steinsalz abgebaut. Das Salz lagert 40 m
unter Meereshöhe, während Bad
Friedrichshall 155 m über Meereshöhe
liegt. Welche Strecke legt der Förderkorb
zurück?
A Mathematical Problem
(Translation)
• In the salt mine at Bad Friedrichshall rock
salt is being exploited. The salt deposit is
40m below sea level, while Bad
Friedrichshall lies 155m above sea level.
What distance does the cage cover?
Sprachliches Problem: Textlichkeit
• Im Salzbergwerk Bad Friedrichshall wird
Steinsalz abgebaut. Das Salz lagert 40 m
unter Meereshöhe, während Bad
Friedrichshall 155 m über Meereshöhe
liegt. Welche Strecke legt der Förderkorb
zurück?
Linguistic Problem: ‚Texuality‘
• In the salt mine at Bad Friedrichshall rock
salt is being exploited. The salt deposit is
40m below sea level, while Bad
Friedrichshall lies 155m above sea level.
What distance does the cage cover?
A Solution
Edda: es steht also hm – die wollen
Steinsalz abbauen – Bad Frieshalle oder
wie das hier steht
Interviewerin: hm Bad Friedrichshall
Edda: hm - Bad Friedrichshall ja – hm – und
das liegt aber vier/ vierzig Millimeter unter
des Meeres vierzig Meter – ne – und jetzt
wissen sie nicht – welche Strecke sie
nehmen sollen.
A Solution (Translation)
Edda: it says well hm – they want to exploit
rock salt – Bad Frieshalle or what it says
here
Interviewer: hm Bad Friedrichshall
Edda: hm – Bad Friedrichshall yes – hm –
and that lies four/fourty millimetres below
sea fourty metres – isn’t it – and now they
don’t know which route to take.
