The coconut island
Koh Samui is the second largest island in Thailand after Phuket and one of
the most popular destinations in Thailand. This is where you find wonderful
white beaches and crystal clear waters combined with beautiful scenery.

KOH SAMUI BEACHES
Koh Samui - an idyllic and tropical paradise with a
great mix of traditional Thai hospitality and quiet and
laid-back existence. Samui has carefully followed the
development to meet the modern travelers expectations.
Samui is home to much more than luxurious hotels and
resorts, restaurants, bars and shops and is waiting to be
discovered by you. The beaches here are known just to be
among the most beautiful and best in the world. You can
also find secluded coves and magical hideouts - if you
know where to look. We hope this beach-guide will make
it easier to find what you are looking for, before your trip,
or when you allready arrived. Now it’s up to you, good
luck.
Chaweng Beach
The largest and most popular beach stretching almost
five kilometers long and with many easy and luxurious
resorts, hotels and guesthouses, and its not hard to find
good restaurants located directly on the beach. Behind all
the resorts you can find Chaweng Beach Road, lined with
restaurants, bars, spas, shops, street stalls and more aesy
food carts that serves delicious fresh food. The beach is a
wonderful place for an early morning walk or jogging tour.
At the southern end of the beach, Soi Reggae, we can find
the entertainment area which also has couple Muay Thai
boxing stadiums. And what about the temple guarded by
carved wooden monkeys and big Laem Din market. All
sorts of fresh food are delivered in the early morning and
applies to the neighboring Dow Seafood Market where in
the early morning is feverish activity, a nice place to visit
for those who are early riser.
Lamai Beach
Lamai, the second most popular beach after Chaweng,
stretches about four kilometers long and the water is usually clear and the beach perfect to roll out the towel on.
Here families with children thrives like fish in water. There
is also a wide range of accommodation to choose from,
ranging from 5-star luxury to simple accommodation for
those who want to save some Baht. Additionally there is a
wealth of restaurants, bars, spas and health resorts.
There is free free Muay Thai events every Saturday and
on the other side of the beach road is a water park for
the kids (Coco Splash Waterpark). Wat Lamai is a meeting place and cultural center. There is a museum with
buildings and artifacts from Samui and you can see how
it looked before it was invaded by the mass-tourism. On
Sundays you can enjoy the market “Walking Street” along
part of the beach road. Outside Lamai city on the ring
road, you will find the famous Hin Ta Hin Yai rock formations that must be perpetuated (bring camera) before you
leave Samui. At the entrance to the rocks is an area of ​​
small shops and food stalls that are nice to walk around in.
Mae Nam
Mae Nam is nestled on the northern part of the island and
stretches for several kilometers. The beach offers views
of the neighboring island of Koh Phangan and when it is
clear even to Koh Tao. A number of resorts and bungalows
are scattered along the beach and many visitors love
the place for its tranquility, the soft golden sand and the
gorgeous views. From the side streets, you can follow the
road over the mountains all the way to Lamai. Mae Nam
has a market street (that you can find on Soi 4 ​​“Walking
Street”). They are open every Thursday from afternoon
and also houses a Chinese temple and a major Buddhist
temple a few hundred meters from the ring road.
A couple-three hundred meters into the mountains on Soi
5 is a stadium for Buffalo Fighting. Between Soi 5 and Soi
6 there is an early morning market and evening market
near Soi 7.
Santiburi golf course located in the mountains above Soi
7 is a must-visit for anyone who likes golf.
A more spectacular and well maintained course is difficult
to find and Santiburi is also the only 18-hole course on
Koh Samui. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in
Mae Nam, most of them on the side roads leading down
to the sea. On the western end of the beach is the Lomprayah ferry where people travell to the nearby islands,
several departures every day.

Nathon Beach
Samuis administrative center and the where the main port
for ferries to and from the mainland (car ferries) are located.
You can find some hotels but it is more of a city you are visiting for an afternoon, the hotels are better on the beaches
north and east of the island of Samui. Just at the terminal
there is a every-day local food market, open from afternoon
to late evening. Along the “middle road” you can find old
teak houses with small shops and a “walking street”, which
is open on Saturdays. Along the one-way road that runs
through the city are plenty of charming shops and restaurants who serves delicious food. Just off the main road, Soi
4, is an ornate Chinese temple with a nice garden. Near the
far end of Nathon is a famous “open-air” restaurant serving
their famous duck - a lot of guests around noon, which usually cater to it’s great!
Bo Phut Beach
Best known as “Fisherman’s Village”. Its a narrow street that
runs along the beach. Old genuine teak wooden houses
winds Samui locals lived several generations. Parts of it
have been modernized over the years but there is still a
place that is full of local small shops, international restaurants, bars and market stalls. Every Friday converted the
street to the big “Walking Street” and you’ll find plenty of
local delicacies. Accommodation is in small hotels, several
5-star luxury at the far end (west) but also more expensive
rooms that start from 600 baht / night depending on season. The beach also has views of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
Speed-boat departs from the pier to the Full moon party
on Phangan which takes place there every month. Even if
you do not live around Bo Phut is a place worth visiting.
For restaurants, the small, charming shops and the lovely
atmosphere that prevails. The restaurants range from luxurious to casual. We can recommend the Frog “The Frog” which
is located right at the entrance to Fishermans Village, cheap,
tasty and usually packed!
Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem
The gigantic and magnificent golden Buddha statue that
watches over the island from the northeast corner of Samui
is one of the first things you see when you are flying in to
Samui. It is at the height of a hill, on an island (Koh Farn)
connected by a causeway and is the most famous image of
the island. Many Thais pray in the temple and it is important
to show respect. Remember to dress appropriately and act
in a way that is expected when you are in and around the
temple areas. There are some Thai restaurants and nice
small shops around the temple. From the top of the hill, at
the foot of the Buddha, you are given some beautiful views
and along the road from it you can see another huge Buddha image at Wat Plai Laem. The area is frequented mostly
by tourists and therefore pricing to be slightly high, which
can be annoying. I had to pay 50 Baht for a coconut that
otherwise costs to a maximum of 30 Baht, but what do you
do when you just need a coconut ... :)

Choeng Mon is located about 15 minutes from the center
of Chaweng Beach but it feels like longer. Choeng Mon is a
small town with a road running through the 20 or so restaurants and bars. The beach has long been a favorite of the
locals because it is quiet and picturesque and safe place for
swimming most of the year. There is accommodation in all
price ranges, some of them are old-fashioned ‘beach bungalows’ at one end and most have views of the small island of
Koh Farn Noi you can walk to when the tide is low.
Bang Rak (Big Buddha Beach)
Bang Rak Beach between Fishermans Village and Big Buddha. Here are some really great resorts and some private
villas that are rented along the beach which stretches for
several kilometers and has stunning views, maybe not the
best beach and a lot of fishing boats can disturb the view.
Many bars and restaurants line the main street. There are
two piers, the closest to Big Buddha has daily ferries to
Koh Phangan and Koh Tao and on to the mainland port of
Chumphon (Seatran Discovery Link departs 08:00 and 13:30
from Samui to Phangan 30 minutes and 2 hours. Tao). From
Chumphon there is VIP-buses to Hua Hin and Bangkok. The
trip to Bangkok takes around 12 hours, with about half the
travel time takes place on the boat. Just beside the ferry
terminal in Bang Rak is one of the most visited fish markets
on the island. Local fishermen arrive with their catch and
trade is lively all day long. If you look at the other end of the
town there is a shortcut to Chaweng Beach, a road called Soi
Bond Kai (the locals dubbed “Ghost Rd.).
Taling Ngam and Lipa Noi
The southwestern part of the island is less known to us tourists. It is largely untouched with lots of secluded bays, most
of them tend to be rocky. From the west coast has views of
the famous “Five Islands” and some of the closest islands in
the Angthong National Marine Park. Angthon is also an ideal
place to visit when you get tired of the beach life. Day-trips
runs all day that will create memories for a long time. Forget
your camera? you have to blame yourself! In the western
part of the island there are some hotels, private villas that
can be rented and some nice local restaurants. You can also
find several temples, including one with a mummified monk.
Another ferry terminal (car ferry) is located at Lipa Noi, and
an other one in Nathon. Ferries to and from Donsak on the
mainland arrive and depart every hour from 5:00 am until
18:00. Along the ring road are several large waterfalls and a
safari park with elephant trekking.
Hua Thanon
This predominantly Muslim village is home to the descendants of some of the island’s earliest settlers, sea-gypsies.
There is still a thriving trade with the fishing fleet and fish
market along the natural coastline that survived the ravages
of time. Shortly after the village (from Lamai Beach), you can
turn off the ring road to the left and the signs leading to the
nearby Tiger Zoo and Aquarium. They have shows several
times a day with tigers and lions. If you are lucky you may
see tiger cubs that you can feed and cuddle with. On our
visit there were cubs who were 2 months old, sweet, I can
promise! If you continue on the road it will take you to the
butterfly farm and Snake Farm. There is also a local Rom
distillery that produces of rum from sugar cane. On your
journey you will find many small cozy restaurants that are
worth to be visited.

Koh Phangan - one of Thailands most affordable islands!
That Koh Phangan only should consist of young people and drugs dancing to heavy techno music
is a myth. It must be conceded that the day-long celebrations occur but there is another side of the
island too. Child-friendly beaches, luxurious accommodation and great snorkeling water.
The beaches stretches like a string of pearls around the entire island. Are you good at figuring you
will end up well over 20 of them! Koh Phangan is still seen as one of the most affordable islands
in Thailand to visit. There is cheap accommodation close to the water and affordable restaurants
to eat at. Phangan is ten years after Samui in their development, which has created a place that is
more quaint by comparison. The important cultural and tourist Haad Rin Beach is popular during
the full moon nights, but is worth visiting the rest of the month for its chaotic jumble of bars, clubs,
restaurants and shops with various crafts. On the undeveloped and pristine beaches are only a few
bungalows that disturbs the peace. The most exclusive of these are Thong Naipan Beach thanks to
the island’s most luxurious resort Santhiya Resort and Spa and Panviman.
Koh Phangan is located in south-eastern Thailand between the popular islands of Koh Samui and
Koh Tao. If you are traveling by boat from Samui to Phanga, the trip takes around 45 minutes and
another 90 minutes to Koh Tao. Thong Sala is the island’s “capital” and the place most people
arrive to as there is the large port. Around the island more than 20 of stunning beaches, most are
accessed through the newly laid concrete road while others can easily be reached from the water
with a long tail boat.
Opinions differ about the first settlers to Koh Phangan. Although most agree that the first people
who moved to the island were Muslim, “sea gypsies” who traveled by boat from the Malay Peninsula. Today there are very few Muslim residents remained on the island. Phangan name comes
from the word “Ngan” meaning “sand dune”. Not many know that Koh Phangan is affordable and
a perfect island for families. There is more than 85 resorts affordable hotels and resorts on the
island.

This small island just off Ao Mae Haad on Phangan’s northwestern tip has a pair of small but really beautiful beaches. During
low tide a sand dune connects the island to the mainland that
you can walk on. During high tide you will still be able to reach
the island but your feet will maybe be wet! Unfortunately, we
find some debris and piles of used bottles on the island, which
is sad! But its a beautiful place to roll out your towel and brush
up on your tan while you work your way through your favorite
book, and to bring your snorkel gear coz this is one of the best
places for snorkeling, best on the west side of the island.
There should be one resort on the island, Koh Ma Dive Resort
but not shore its open. If you are looking for some place to
stay there are plenty to choose from at Mae Haad Beach and
you will only have a few steps to walk if you want to discover
Koh Ma...
One beautiful resort is Maehaad Bay Resort, high season from
2,500Thb or more easy Maehaad Garden Inn from 500Thb/
night, your choise!

Ao Leuk Beach
Koh Tao
Koh Tao is about 70 km from the mainland and was used as a prison, from 1933 to 1947,
to political prisoners from the “Bowaradech insurrection.” The isolated location in the
Gulf of Thailand was a perfect place to keep prisoners, Thailand’s “Alcatraz”! After the
prison closed permanent residents came, both from Samui and Phangan for fishing and
settled on the island to harvest coconuts.

Koh Tao has a deserved reputation for its natural beauty and rich marine life with wonderful coral
reefs and tropical beaches to be found here. Koh Tao has become a popular island for many divers,
but also for others who just want to spend lazy days on the beach, the island is a breathtaking
paradise.
A small island just north of Koh Phangan (90 min from Phangan and additional 45 min to Samui),
which has become a popular destination for scuba divers and snorkelers around the world. Koh Tao
means Turtle Island in Thai and has been given the name because of the turtles that was swimming
here in thewaters in the past. It is also said that the island has the shape of a turtle, if you use your
imagination properly! His Majesty King Rama V visited the island in 1899 and carved his signature
in a large stone at the end of Sairee Beach. The stone is still there today.
Visit Koh Tao to relax on the beaches, the island’s nightlife, easy shopping and of course to stretch
your body into the crystal clear waters and for snorkeling and scuba diving!
The most famous beaches is Haad Sai Ree, Mae Haad Beach and Ao Chalok. Hat Sai Ree is arguably

Welcome to Nang Yuan Island!
Koh Nang Yuan is a small island located northwest of Koh Tao.
Actually, the island consists of three small islands tied together with
a long sandy stretch. Nang Yuan is a very popular destination for
snorkeling enthusiasts and divers. The island feels very Thai and
when you arrive you will be greeted by a long wooden bridge built
on piles. The bridge takes you between the big rocks to the beach
where you can enjoy sunbathing and swimming or/and snorkelling.
Nang Yuan beaches
Koh Nang Yuan is a great beach that conects the three islands which
are full of small coral pieces in every conceivable form. It is forbidden to bring the corals from the island, they belong here. From the
dune you have water on both sides, but the right side is the best for
snorkeling with magestic different corals. The water is crystal clear
and beautiful turquoise, very inviting!
Koh Nang Yuan by night
Koh Nang Yuan is a quiet island with no bars. There is basic food
on the resort restaurant on the island, and If you are kind, they may
mixe you a drink too! Here you can enjoy a very quiet holiday, except during the daytime when all the tourists arrive...
Dive and snorkel
Due to the clear waters of Nang Yuan snorkeling is absolutely fantastic here. You do not need to take many steps from the beach before the coral reefs begins and all the colorful fish swimming under
you. It is impressive that they swim so close!
Getting to Nang Yuan
Koh Nang Yuan is but a 10-15 minute journey from the west side
of Koh Tao. Advertised speed boat and mega-catamaran Lomprayah
offers a package day trip, cheapest and easiest option is to charter a
longtail. There is a boat-taxi-stand during the daytime at Lotus Bar.
The price is 200 Baht roundtrip. Remember to settle a return time
with your driver. If you have a Thai phone you can swap numbers
and call when you would like to go back to Koh Tao.
Accommodation
There are resort on the island, Nang Yuan Island Dive Resort which
offers accommodation in all different price ranges, from 1,000Thb
low season and double high season! You’ll stay in small cabins
perched in the hillside with a great view over the island and ocean!
The resort has its own restaurant and offers diving excursions.

Still, one can hear that Koh Tao is referred to as the
Turtle Island. The shape of the island is said to resemble a turtle (with a lot of imagination). Koh Tao has a
deserved reputation for its natural beauty and rich
marine life of the coral reefs and tropical beaches

Aow Leuk
Depth 2m-12m
Aow Leuk is a shallow dive site and great for student
divers to practice their skills. A good option for fun
divers is to get dropped off at Hin Ngam (on the way
into Aow Leuk) as it offers a wider variety of marine
life and is also a little bit deeper.
Chumphon Pinnacle
Depth 14m-35m
Regarded as one of Koh Tao’s best dive sites when
conditions are good, Chumphon Pinnacle is located
within a 40 minute boat journey away from the
island. This is a dive site you must visit during your
stay on Koh Tao. You can see many huge shoals of
fish, and this is where you have the best chance of
seeing a Whale Shark. Check Twitter @roctopus for

Green Rock
Depth 12m-20m
Green Rock is a great dive site to explore. It offers
many ‘swim throughs’, great corals, and enough marine life to make you come back for more.
Hin Wong Pinnacle
Depth 10m-28m
This dive site is a good alternative to Chumphon Pinnacle as it’s usually quiet. Located on the East side
of the island it’s made up of many large boulders, so
there are plenty of places for the fish to hide.
Sail Rock
Depth Surface-40m
This is the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand. A
very impressive place that attracts a huge amount of
marine life. This site is not visited every week as it’s a
2 hours boat journey to get there. Send us a message

Shark Island
Another ‘must see’ dive site during your visit to Koh
Tao. At Shark Island you don’t see any sharks (it got
it’s name due to the shape of the island looking like a
shark fin) but you will see everything else you could
possibly want to see on Koh Tao.
Southwest Pinnacle
Depth 5m-28m
This dive site is very similar to Chumphon Pinnacle.
It consists of one main pinnacle which is surrounded
by smaller pinnacles. See if you can find the ‘secret
pinnacle’.
Twins
Depth 10m-18m
Twins is the most popular dive site on the island. It’s
small, quite shallow, and offers a big selection of fish
life and corals. You should also explore Buoyancy
World (located to the north) which is a group of
sculptures and buoyancy aids… definitely something
you don’t see very often underwater!
White Rock
10m-20m
Another popular choice. White Rock is one of the
biggest dive site around Koh Tao and will need more
than one dive to truly explore.
Japanese Gardens
Depth 2m-14m
Japanese Gardens is a popular dive site and another
good choice for beginner divers. Located around
Koh Nang Yuan, it contains many different varieties
of hard corals, and resembles a garden – hence the
name.
Mango Bay
Depth 2m-12m
This beautiful secluded bay offers some good shallow water diving. You can explore both sides of the
bay or do a ‘drop off’ on your way into the it (preferred by fun divers)
Red Rock
Just around the island from Japanese Gardens, Red
Rock is a small pinnacle that comes up to just below
the surface of the water. If you go to Red Rock, you
need to swim to the coast and find Nang Yuan Cave.
It’s one of the more beautiful swim-throughs on Koh
Tao and should not be missed.

Big Rock between Chaweng and Lamai
Maybe not something you take a detour
to look at but if you pass it, you will either
arrive to Lamai or will be leaving! A nice
curve and it feels almost like you pass
under the stone. There is a restaurant just
before the curve with lovely views.
Koh Ma
This small island, just off Ao Mae Haad on
Phangan’s northwestern tip has a pair of small
but really beautiful beaches. During low tide
a sand dune connects the island to the mainland that you can walk on. During high tide
you will still be able to reach the island but
your feet will maybe be wet!
Fisherman´s Village - Bo Phut
Its easy to like Fisherman Village. Perhaps a bit too high prices at the
restaurants but it is super nice to just stroll around and watch. The
beach here is also one of the nicest, especially evening time when the
soft cushions with low tables are laid out. That said, nice to just walk
around and and take part of the lively restaurant and market life.
Butterfly Garden - Butterfly Garden in Koh Samui,
is a window into the beautiful world of wildlife,
set in a beautifully landscaped luscious tropical
garden. The Butterfly Garden is an amazing attraction, home to many different species of butterflies, moth and other insects. The perfect spot
to see the tropical butterflies up close.
Suphattra Land : Take a tour through the enormous orchards and and
see how 25 different varieties of fruit are grown. You get to eat as
much fruit as you can. Additionally, you will stop and eat papaya
salad which is referred to as “Som tam” in Thailand. It is fun to see
how the fruit grows and surely you will find fruits you’ve never
seen before. Open daily 06:30 to 18:00. Entry fee 300 Baht.

Mumified Monk
Far from beaches and the crowds you can find
one of Koh Samui’s most remarkable temples,
Wat Khunaram. Mostly famous for the mummified
monk, Loung Pordaeng, that is kept on display in
one upright glass casket. The monk is surrounded
by flowers, candles, incense sticks and fruit offerings. For many Westerners this might be an
uncomfortable, or even disturbing sight, for Thai
people the body of the monk is there to be
worshipped. Death is seen as an opportunity
to be reborn to one better life.
Q-Bar - Chaweng
This is the same hill where Wat Kao Hua Jook
Pagoda is located. Fantastic view down to the
lake in Chaweng Town.

Visit the Waterfalls
There are quite a few waterfalls on Samui.
Better in the rainy season but by far the
best one is Na Muang. From Lamai to Na
Thon on the 4169 just past Wat Khunaram.
The next best is Hin Lad just before Na
Thon, little bit tricky to get to (by foot) but
worth it.
Chaweng Town
Wat Kao Hua Jook Pagode
Almost on the top of the mountain overlooking Chaweng Lake. You will see it from far
away with its golden shiny chedi. Once up, you have a fantastic view on the lake an Samui
airport landing runway. In the fund behind the runway you can see Koh Phangan and Koh
Tao on a clear day.
Million Year Stone Park and Crokodile farm
Thrilling and at the same Great and a really
wonderful attraction where million year old trees
have turned into stones.

Wat Plai Laem
Wat Plai Laem is a Buddhist temple on

The 18 hole championship golf course at the “Santibuti Samui Country Club” (Par 72 and

Best time to visit Koh Samui
The best time to visit Koh Samui is usually the same time that
everybody else wants to visit the island! To choose a time with
decent weather, but some extra elbow room can be tricky. Here
below you can see what the weather looks like during different time of year, then it’s up to you, what time of the year you
choose to visit Samui. Whenever you do it, we are sure you will
have a fantastic experience.
The rainy season on Koh Samui is from September until mid
December. In September and December, you can experience
short bursts but still nice days, and rain often disappear as
quickly as it came. For those who want to avoid the rain should
perhaps avoid the period from mid-October to mid-December,
from November with the most intense monsoon period, which
also affects harder every five years.

During the eurpean summer the island is hectic and all flights
to Samui is quickly becoming crowded. Room rates are increasing and the beaches getting full.
The warmest months on Samui is March to May when the heat
also makes most beach vendors absent, no use to walk the
beach back and forth near the saturation point of moisture
along a beach which also lacked customers.
If you can visit Samui in April, try to make it to Songkran. At
April 13 the Thai New Year celebration starts and hold on for
three days, sometimes longer.
The whole country is celebrated the New Year by throwing
water on each other and smear talc in the face, no one can
manage from getting wet!
Winds cries out in late May and makes it possible for the annual Samui regatta to begin. If sailing is your major interest,

Get around
It is relatively easy to get around
on Koh Samui due to a smaller but
sufficient range of transport options.
Samui is Thailand’s second largest
island after Phuket and just 25 kilometers long and 21 kilometers wide,
which means that most of your trips
on the island will not be so long. However, the range allows you to customize your traveling after your wallet and
how adventurous you want to be.
Most transport alternative to Thailand’s top tourist destinations can also
been found at Samui. However, Samui
have no tuk tuk. But with the local
public transport you can travel to most
of the important destinations and
rental of different vehicles is available
for those who value that control their
departure and arrival times.
Songthaews (Pick-up Taxis)
The closest bus-system on Samui is
songthaew. The name means “two
benches”. Usually a pick-up with
mounted seats and roofing. They have
their predetermined routes, but can
also be ordered privately to take you
and your party to different locations.
The songthaew has place up to 10
people so the price of the journey
verdict on all travelers is a fraction
compared to taxis, but with natural
air-con! Songthaew generally have
their destination painted on the front
of the vehicle in English. There are no
official stops, you can hail one by the
road.
Travelling with a Songthaew requires a

will need a valid Thai or international
driving license in order to drive on

rent motor bike or car in the entire

Bicycle rental on Koh Samui

to get around on the island is to rent a
bike. At the same time as you build on
your leg muscles and get an excellent
condition you easily stop and look

a few shops that rent bikes, mainly at
the larger beaches. A good mountain
bike costs about THB 80. per day, making it the cheapest way to get around
Koh Samui, if not walking! But keep
in mind that the roads may be substandard and the island’s mountainous
topography will place great demands
