I Gladiatori tornano nel Colosseo e lungo i Fori Imperiali, finalmente liberati dal traffico a vantaggio delle
biciclette. Roma Maxima è la versione moderna del
Giro del Lazio, prima edizione 1933, una delle più prestigiose classiche italiane, che ha visto le sfide tra De
Vlaeminck, Moser e Saronni, e le ultime leggendarie
pedalate di Gimondi.
L’arrivo con il Colosseo sullo sfondo significa che nelle
metropoli c’è ancora posto per il ciclismo. Un aspetto
su cui riflettere: perché gli appassionati ci sono anche
nelle grandi città, dove l’aspetto agonistico si fonda
con l’uso quotidiano della bicicletta. Due ruote come
mezzo di trasporto per fuggire dalla congestione automobilistica. Ci vuole pazienza, da parte di ognuno
di noi. Cedere una parte della nostra sfera vitale per
migliorare l’ambiente di tutti. Sono poche le capitali che accolgono il grande ciclismo: Parigi, il Tour e i
Campi Elisi; Madrid e la tappa finale della Vuelta. Con
le Olimpiadi si è aggiunta Londra. E non scordiamo
Milano, perché il Giro d’Italia fa parte della storia della
seconda città italiana. C’è spazio, c’è voglia di fare bici
anche a Roma. Roma Maxima è rimasta l’ultima corsa
del centro-sud. Il Giro non dimentica e non lascia soli
gli appassionati del Meridione e delle isole. Ma questo
presidio dovrà servire come punto di riferimento per
allargare nuovamente i confini del ciclismo italiano in
un’area dove passione ed entusiasmo non sono secondi a nessuno. Zone che, vent’anni fa, svolgevano
la funzione di catalizzare la preparazione delle squadre
e le prime uscite dei corridori: come adesso fanno Argentina e Dubai, Qatar e Oman. Appia Antica, i lastroni
di basalto, le catacombe, una cultura millenaria che ha
civilizzato il mondo. E, prima, le salite di Rocca Priora e
Campi di Annibale. Non c’è corsa al mondo che possa
vantare un panorama uguale. È la Roma Maxima. Dobbiamo sentirla nostra, ed esserne orgogliosi.

Gladiators make their comeback in the Coliseum and
along the Imperial Fora, cleared of traffic – at last – to
let bicycles run free. Roma Maxima is the modern version of Giro del Lazio (whose first edition dates back to
1933), one of the most prestigious Italian classic races,
which witnessed epic battles between De Vlaeminck,
Moser and Saronni, and the last glorious moments of
Gimondi’s career.
Finishing against the backdrop of the Coliseum means
that big cities, too, still spare some room for cycling.
This is food for thoughts. You can find enthusiasts everywhere, also in big cities, where the sporting spirit merges with the daily use of bicycles as a means of transport,
to escape traffic congestion. It just takes a little patience.
We all need to give up on some little things in our life, in
order to give everybody a better environment.
Only a few capitals are home to major cycling events:
Paris with the Champs-Élysées and the Tour; Madrid with
the final stage of the Vuelta. London recently joined this
group with the Olympic Games. Let us not forget Milan,
because the Giro d’Italia is an integral part of the history
of the second most important Italian city. There is plenty
of room and a great longing for cycling in Rome, too.
Roma Maxima is the last race to take place in centralSouthern Italy left. Of course, the Giro does not forget
about the many enthusiasts in Southern Italy and in the
islands, nor does it leave them alone. This race, however, must serve as reference point to widen the scope
of Italian cycling to include an area where passion and
excitement are second to none, an area which – twenty
years ago – acted as a catalyst for teams training, and
where riders would start stretching their legs, as it is now
the case for Argentina, Dubai, Qatar and Oman.
The old Appian Way with its basalt slabs, the catacombs... a thousand-year-old culture that civilized the
whole world. And, before that, the Rocca Priora and
Campi di Annibale climbs. No other race in the world can
boast such an amazing landscape. This is Roma Maxima. We must feel it belongs to us, and be proud of it.

Percorso che si può suddividere in tre parti. Prima
parte di avvicinamento alle asperità attraverso la
base dei Colli Albani e l’Agro Pontino. Usciti da
Roma (attraverso ampi viali) si percorrono strade
di carreggiata ampia e prevalentemente rettilinee.
Unico attraversamento articolato in Aprilia. Segue
la seconda parte con alcune salite impegnative.
La prima salita di Rocca Massima con pendenze
attorno al 6% costanti e su strade a carreggiata
ristretta. Breve discesa prima di affrontare lo
strappo di Colle Callaccio e scendere su Segni
e Colleferro (Rifornimento Fisso). La strada
(carreggiata ampia) resta in falsopiano fino alle
Macere dove dirige su Rocca Priora. Si segnala
che tutti i tratti di collegamento percorrono strade
ampie con il manto asfaltato abbastanza usurato.
Dopo il culmine della salita di Rocca Priora
breve discesa per poi giungere nella statale per
Grottaferrata. Passato Ponte Squarciarelli la corsa
sale verso Rocca di Papa dove viene affrontata la
salita ai Campi di Annibale: 1 km su strada molto
ripida stretta fra le case. Discesa fino ad Ariccia e
dopo Albano Laziale strappo dei Cappuccini per
rientrare sulla via Appia attraverso Castelgandolfo.
Dopo il passaggio nella zona dell’aeroporto di
Ciampino si affronta un tratto “storico” dell’Appia
Antica in “sanpietrini” disposti a regola.
The route can be divided into three sections.
The first one approaches the incoming climbs,
rolling along the foot of the Alban Hills and the
Pontine Marshes. After leaving Rome (on wide
boulevards), the race runs along broad and
essentially straight roadways. The sole and
well-structured crossing is to be found in Aprilia.
Then comes section number two, featuring some
steep climbs. The first climb is Rocca Massima,
with an even gradient of around 6%, on narrowed
roadway. A short descent leads to the Colle
Callaccio spurt, and then down towards Segni and
Colleferro (where the fixed feed zone has been
established). The road is broad and apparently flat
up to Le Macere, and then heads towards Rocca
Priora. All connection segments take place along
broad roads, with a quite worn-out surface. The
peak of the ascent to Rocca Priora is followed by
a short descent leading to the national road to
Grottaferrata. After crossing Ponte Squarciarelli,
the race climbs towards Rocca di Papa, where
the riders have to face the ascent towards Campi
di Annibale: 1 km along a steep slope, cramped
in the middle of the built-up area. The race then
descends towards Ariccia, and after crossing
Albano Laziale comes the Cappuccini’s spurt,
leading back to via Appia through Castelgandolfo.
After crossing the Ciampino airport area, the riders
have to confront a “historical” sector of via Appia
Antica, paved with regularly arranged “sanpietrini”
(bevelled stones of black basalt).

church, the race enters the
built-up area of Rome, it
crosses Porta San Sebastiano
and reaches the Baths of
Caracalla boulevard. The last
kilometers are virtually on flat
ground, along wide and straight
roads. Very broad bends along
the last three kilometers. The
home stretch is 580 m-long, 8
m-wide, paved with “sanpietrini”
and in slight ascent.

Oggi Capitale d’Italia, secondo tradizione Roma fu
fondata da Romolo, primo di sette sovrani, il 21
aprile del 753 a.C. Per secoli fu capitale di un impero
tra i più estesi della Storia, punto di riferimento della
cultura latina, cuore della cristianità. Proprio alla
Chiesa si deve la rinascita di Roma dopo le disavventure
medievali: in qualità di capitale dello Stato Pontificio è
progressivamente abbellita e arricchita da chiese, palazzi
e monumenti, preservando - tranne rare eccezioni - le
vestigia romane. Il risultato è un museo a cielo aperto
che copre tre millenni di Storia, Patrimonio dell’Umanità
Unesco dal 1980.
Famosa per gli studi cinematografici di Cinecittà e
l’intensa attività teatrale, sede di Musei antichi e moderni
(dalla Galleria Borghese fino al Maxxi disegnato da Zaha

Now capital of Italy, based on tradition Rome has been
founded on April 21, 753 b.C. by Romulus, the first of
seven kings. During centuries Roma has been the capital of
an empire among the most extended of the history, point
of reference of the Latin culture and heart of Christianity.
And in fact the renaissance of Rome after the medieval
misadventures owes to the Church: as the capital of the
States of the Church, it has been progressively embellished
and enriched by churches, palaces and monuments
keeping - besides rare exceptions - the Roman vestiges.

the several Doc (registered designation of origin) regional

sucking pig), salamis and cheeses. The
home made bread of Genzano is entitled to
the Igpprotected geographical indication,
while the Castelli Romani wines (white
and red), the Frascati (white) and the Colli
albani (white) deserve the Docregistered
designation of origin.

La via regina (Regina viarum) della Roma
antica deve il suo nome al console Appio
Claudio che progetta - nel 312 a.C. - una
nuova strada per raggiungere la Campania
e, seguitamente, Brindisi. Pavimentazione
- per l’epoca molto moderna - in
pietra levigata poggiata su uno strato
di pietrisco, per assicurare tenuta e
drenaggio. Sarà l’esempio per l’intera rete
di vie consolari.
The “queen road” (Regina viarum) of
ancient Rome is named after censor
Appius Claudius who - in 312 B.C. designed a new road which would connect
the city with Campania and, later on, with
the town of Brindisi. The road surface was
very modern at that time: large polished
stones over a layer of rubble, to ensure
solidity and drainage. It served an example
for the whole network of consular roads.

Art. 2 - Tipo di corsa
La corsa è riservata ai corridori
della categoria Hommes Elite
ed è iscritta nel calendario UCI
Europe Tour. La gara è nella
classe 1.1 e conformemente
all’art. 2.11.014 UCI attribuisce i
seguenti punti: 1° p.80 - 2° p.56
- 3° p.32 - 4° p.24 - 5° p.20 - 6°
p.16 - 7° p.12 - 8° p.8 - 9° p.7 10° p.6 - 11° p.5 - 12° p.3 per la
classifica UCI Europe Tour.
Art. 3 - Partecipazione
Conformemente
all’articolo
2.1.005 del regolamento UCI,
la corsa è ad invito per le seguenti squadre: UCI Pro Teams, Equipes Continentales
Professionnelles UCI e Equipes Continentales UCI.
Secondo l’articolo 2.2.003 del
regolamento UCI il numero di
corridori per squadra stabilito
è di massimo 8.
L’Organizzatore, al fine di salvaguardare l’immagine e la reputazione della propria gara, si
riserva il diritto di rifiutare, fino
al momento della partenza,
i corridori o i Gruppi Sportivi
che con i propri atti o dichiarazioni dimostrassero di venire
meno ai principi di lealtà spor-
tiva agli impegni assunti e previsti dal paragrafo 1.1.023 del
regolamento UCI.
Inoltre nel caso che i corridori
o il Gruppo Sportivo venissero
meno, nel corso della manifestazione, ai principi di cui al
precedente capoverso, l’Ente
Organizzatore si riserva anche
il diritto di escluderli dalla corsa in qualsiasi momento.

Art. 8 - Tempo massimo
I corridori con distacco che
supera il 8% del tempo del vincitore saranno considerati fuori
tempo massimo.

Art. 10 - Controllo Medico
Il controllo medico sarà effettuato presso lo studio mobile
all’arrivo.
Art. 11 - Cerimoniale
Secondo l’articolo 1.2.112 del
regolamento UCI devono presentarsi al cerimoniale i primi
tre della prova 10 minuti dopo
il loro arrivo. Il vincitore della
gara deve presentarsi in Sala
Stampa.
Art. 12 - Sanzioni
Le infrazioni sono sanzionate
secondo la “tabella sanzioni”,
art. 12.1.040 del regolamento
UCI.
Art. 13 - Disposizioni generali
Possono seguire la corsa solo
le persone denunciate all’atto del ritiro dei contrassegni
dal titolare del rispettivo automezzo. Eventuali modifiche o
aggiunte devono essere notificate al Direttore dell’Organizzazione. I conducenti delle
auto e delle moto accreditate
devono rispettare le norme del
Codice della Strada e devono
altresì sottostare alle disposizioni del Direttore dell’Organizzazione e dei suoi collaboratori. Non possono seguire
la corsa persone che non vi
abbiano funzioni riconosciute
dagli organizzatori e inerenti
ai vari servizi, né persone di
minore età. Nessuna responsabilità di nessuna natura fa
capo all’Ente organizzatore
per i danni derivati da incidenti prima, durante e dopo
la corsa a spettatori e persone
in genere, anche se estranee
alla manifestazione stessa, in
dipendenza di azioni non messe in atto dall’organizzazione
medesima.
Per quanto non contemplato
nel presente regolamento valgono i regolamenti UCI, FCI e
LCP.

which will take place on Sunday,
9th March 2014, in compliance
with the International Cycling
Union Regulations.
the Sporting Groups who by their
acts or declaration would prove
to have failed to keep the principles of sport fair play and the
commitments undertaken and
set forth in paragraph 1.1.023
of the UCI Regulations. Moreover, in the event the riders of the
Sporting Group would fail during
the event, in complying with the
principles set out in the foregoing
paragraph, the Organizer shall
also reserve the right to exclude
them from the race at any time.
Article 2 - Type of race
The race is reserved to cyclist
riders belonging to the Men Élite
Category and is recorded in the
UCI Europe Tour calendar.
The race falls in the 1.1 class
and in compliance with UCI article 2.11.014 the points to be attributed for the UCI Europe Tour
place-list are as follows:
1st place 80 points - 2nd 56 pts
- 3rd 32 pts - 4th 24 pts - 5th 20
pts - 6th 16 pts - 7th 12 pts - 8th

Article 4 - Race Headquarters
The preliminary operations will
take place on the premises of
the Polo Museale Santa Chiara,
via Folgore da San Gimignano,

Friday, 7th March 2014, from
3.00 to 6.00 pm, and at Van
Gazzetta, positioned next to
the meeting point in Via dei Fori
Imperiali, Roma, on Sunday, 9th
March 2014, from 8.30 am to
9.00 am. Licenses control and
the collection of the numbers
are due to take place on Friday, 7th March 2014, from 3.00
to 4.45 pm in San Gimignano
(Siena) and, for the teams which
do not take part in the STRADE
BIANCHE race, on Sunday, 9th
March from 8.30 am to 9.00
am at the start meeting point
in Rome, at Van Gazzetta. The
Sporting Managers’ Meeting
with the College of Commissaires, organized according to
the provisions of article 1.2.087
of the UCI Regulations, will take

Article 3 - Participation

Article 8 - Maximum Time
Riders with a gap higher than
8% of the winner time will be
considered as out of time limit.

Article 10 - Medical check-up
The medical check-up will take
place upon arrival at the mobile
clinic in the finishing area.
Article 11 - Awards Ceremony
According to the provisions of
article 1.2.112 of the UCI Regulations, the first three Riders arrived
shall attend the award ceremony
10 minutes after their arrival. The
winner of the race shall present
himself in the Press Room.
Article 12 - Sanctions
Applying sanctions are those
set forth in the “sanctions chart”
according to article 12.1.040 of
the UCI Regulations.
Article 13 - General Provisions
Only persons recognized upon
collection of the identification
sign, by the owner of the relevant motor vehicle are entitled to follow the race. Possible
changes or additions shall be
notified to the Organization
Manager. Drivers of duly identified cars and motorbikes shall
comply with the provisions set
forth by the Rules of the Road
and shall furthermore comply
with the provisions set out by
the Organization Manager and
his collaborators. Persons who
are not recognized as having
functions acknowledged by the
organizers and services related,
as well as well as under-age
persons, are not allowed to follow the race. The Organization
shall not be liable in any way
whatsoever for damages deriving from accidents occurred
prior, during and after the race to
spectators and generally speaking persons, even if unrelated
to the race, depending from
actions not ascribable to that
same organization. For all that is
not regulated under the present
Regulations the U.C.I., F.C.I and
L.C.P. shall apply.
