WINTER 2010 / VOLUME 12 / ISSUE 4
Dear Friends,
Making a difference in the lives of children
with cancer and their families…one day at
a time.
2010 has been another year of significant change for Brent’s Place and the Brent Eley
Foundation. Last year was highlighted by the completion of our new Aurora facility
located one block west of the Anschutz Medical Campus. The new facility has proven
to be everything that we hoped it would be, providing us with 16 very functional and
efficient apartments for patients and their families. This year has been highlighted by
a new Executive Director, Sean Meyerhoffer, who replaced Adele Gelfand after 10+
years of leadership. Adele’s contribution to our purpose and the Brent’s Place community
cannot be overstated! Her work ethic and focus on our families were truly extraordinary!
Sean comes to us from the American Cancer Society with boundless energy and
enthusiasm as well as a new perspective and ideas for our cause. I look forward to
working with him and the team he has assembled to deliver our promise to the families
that make Brent’s Place their temporary home.
The transition and growth at Brent’s Place has renewed my focus, as the leader of
our Board of Directors, to provide strategic direction for the organization’s future. I am
privileged to have a very talented and experienced group of 15 directors committed
to the outcomes we strive to achieve. Put simply: “The Brent Eley Foundation and
Brent’s Place exists so that people with cancer and other diseases causing acute
immune system deficiencies and their families receive support through affordable,
fully furnished, “Safe-Clean” family housing close to medical institutions while
they become well enough to return home, as well as other supporting programs.”
I am pleased to report that the growth of our facilities and our committed staff
has enabled us to expand the number of families we have been able to support by
26% from 2009 to 2010. It is humbling to witness the spirit and courage of our kids
as they deal with life threatening illness and fight for the miracle of life.
We could not do what we do without the community support this is so generously
given. I thank our volunteers and donors for believing in our cause and choosing Brent’s
Place for their community service and financial support. We hope that you will consider
us for a year end donation and we look forward to your continued involvement with
our events and programs in 2011.
The Holiday season is a time to give thanks for our many blessings and to share
love with family and friends and those that need our help. Make 2011 a great year
for those you love and the causes you support!
OUR MISSION
Sincerely,
Donn Eley

This & That…
A note from the Executive Director:
2010 has been a year filled with learning and growth for our
Brent’s Place staff and programs. Throughout the summer
and fall we have said farewell to dedicated staff members who
gave so much to Brent’s Place and our families, and we have
welcomed new faces to the team who are eager to add a new
level of support for our patients and families. Our new staff
team has been quick to acclimate themselves and we have spent
the last several months working together with the Board of
Directors and our hospital partners to identify opportunities
for improvement in 2011. Two things have remained a constant
in 2010, however, as we have adjusted to the changes in our
staff team.
The first is the increased demand for our services from
patients and families in need of a “Safe-Clean” living environment. Beginning in June and continuing into the fall, we
have been at or above 90% occupancy at the Aurora facility.
Our Family Services Coordinator, Allen Browning, and
House Operations Manager, Fabian Jimenez, have been
Your support is still needed in 2010!

2) Donate gift cards or gifts for family members
3) Help our staff provide special holiday memories
for patients and families at Brent’s Place
Staff Update…
After 4 years with Brent’s Place, we said a fond farewell to
Katie Keating in November. Having started with Brent’s Place
as the Capital Campaign Coordinator during planning for the
new Aurora building, Katie soon proved to be a valuable member
of the team and was promoted to the Development Associate
position when the campaign was complete. Katie became the
heart and soul, as well as the hands behind Brent’s Place events
over the last few years. Katie’s dedication and commitment to
the work of Brent’s Place was clear. Her compassion, friendliness
and sense of humor will certainly be missed. We wish her the
best of luck in her next adventure!
Throughout the summer and early fall we have also
welcomed Fabian, Joe and Julie to Brent’s Place.
Fabian Jimenez joined us in June as our House
Operations Manager. Fabian’s broad range of skills
make him a great fit as the person who keeps Brent’s
Place running smoothly and in accordance with our
“Safe-Clean” standards. His personal and professional
experience make him uniquely suited to ensure that
our facilities are safe for our patients while compassionately

busy coordinating incoming and outgoing families, ensuring
that we remain safe and accessible for all those who need our
assistance. As of November 1st, over 100 families have stayed
at Brent’s Place in 2010 compared to 87 families in 2009.
The second constant is the generous support that we have
continued to receive from throughout our community. I have
been amazed with the individuals and organizations that have
provided us with their time, talent and financial support in
2010. We thank all of you for helping us provide a home of
hope and healing for our families. Our work would not be
possible without you. Please continue to spread the word
about Brent’s Place to friends, family and colleagues who
may be looking to make an end of year contribution or are in
search of a non-profit to support in 2011. I hope that you
will be spending your holidays in the company of good
friends and family!
Happy Holidays,
Sean Meyerhoffer

supporting our families with the perspective of a father that
has walked in their shoes.
Joe Brucker became part of the Brent’s Place team
in August in the newly created Volunteer and
Community Outreach Coordinator position. In
his new role, Joe will continue the hard work
begun by previous Volunteer Coordinators and
expand our grassroots community outreach efforts to engage
more people in the Brent’s Place community. A Boston
University alum, Joe comes to us by way of Minneapolis,
where he worked in direct service, volunteer coordination and
development positions for the Courage Center. He continues
his education in Denver as he seeks to obtain his Masters
Degree in Non-Profit Management. Joe’s energy and creativity
are a welcome addition to our team!
Julie Gart is the newest member of the Brent’s Place team.
Julie began working with Brent’s Place as a volunteer and
quickly developed a strong desire to enrich the lives of children
and families at Brent’s Place. She is excited to continue her work
in support of our families as the new Development Manager.
Julie is a Colorado native entrenched and dedicated to the
community. As a trendsetter in the event industry, she has
extensive experience planning both large and small
events. In her new position, Julie will work with
staff and volunteers to build on the success of our
existing events while working to diversify our
fundraising efforts and broaden our support network.
Our Families…
Family Update: Time really seems to fly at Brent’s Place!
Over the last few months, our families have enjoyed parties,
outings and plenty of wonderful meals! We have a special helper,
Chandra (5), who loves to help pull the cart and deliver meals
on Mondays for families who can’t come down for Family
Night. Since we have been near or at capacity since July, this
has been a great help!
We have had many wonderful parties thanks to the help
of Marissa and Maya who hosted a Pirate Party in September
and the Halloween Party in October. Morgan (13), Matthew
(11), Elise (11), Chandra (5), Jade (9) and Zach (11) all had
a great time decorating beach balls and hunting for buried
treasure! Halloween was a ghoulishly good time loaded with
tricks, treats, games and prizes. Garret (19) had a great time
as a convict while Keegan (8) showed off his ninja best!
Current Family Profile:
Lexi
Chandra (5), Rita (8), Nathanial (2) and Zane (4 months)
also joined us for a hopping good time with our games,
snacks and trick-or-treating.
Brent’s Place continues to be blessed with wonderful
volunteers and supporters who make our outings possible!
Our families had the opportunity to go to the Denver Zoo,
The Butterfly Pavilion, The Denver Botanic Garden’s Pumpkin
Fest, The Westernaires: Horsecapaides and Hammonds Candy
Factory. Chandra (5) was brave enough to touch Rosie, the
tarantula, Danika (3) really loved seeing all the beautiful
butterflies at the Butterfly Pavilion and Morgan (13) was a big
fan of the free candy we all received on the tour at Hammonds
Candy Factory! Thanks so much to these wonderful
companies and organizations for working with us and
making these outing safe for our families!
Former Family Profile: Megan
Alexis “Lexi” is 7 years old and stayed with
Brent’s Place with her mom, Michelle, for
just over a month. She recovered so quickly
from her treatment that she was able to go home
about a month early! Before she and her family went home, they
took the time to sit down and talk about their stay at Brent’s Place.
Brent’s Place: How is your child doing?
Melissa: Megan is doing really well! She is doing a full day of
school at home with her dad. She is planning on going back to
school in March, and she is so excited to get to be back with
other kids. She now has beautiful dark ringlet hair. We have a
lot to be thankful for this year.
Brent’s Place: What brought you to Brent’s Place?
Michelle: Lexi had a bone marrow transplant which was recommended by Dr. Cook down in Colorado Springs. The transplant
team at Children’s recommended that we stay with Brent’s Place
while Lexi recovered.
Brent’s Place: How did Brent’s Place help your family?
Melissa: So glad to have a place like Brent’s Place. It made
things a lot easier. When you are going through a hard time, it
was great to have family meals and to have the fellowship with
other families. Staff was always able and willing to help which
was great. We definitely had peace of mind knowing that it was
a safe and clean place for Megan while she was healing.
Brent’s Place: What is Lexi’s favorite thing to do?
Michelle: Spending time with her family and printing (writing)
Brent’s Place: How has Lexi’s treatment affected your life?
Michelle: Lexi’s treatment has turned our life upside down and
has created a new “normal.” Michelle (Mom) had to leave her
job and Eric (Dad) has had to take on more hours to make up
the difference. Abby and Andy (Lexi’s siblings) have had to do
more chores and responsibilities.
Brent’s Place: What is the best part of staying with Brent’s Place?
Michelle: Lexi really likes family nights, playing on the playground,
finding games in the resource room, watching cable TV and
being able to watch Sponge Bob. (They don’t have Sponge
Bob at the hospital). Michelle and Eric liked the comforting
environment and really appreciated the learning experience of
how to keep the apartment safe and clean for Lexi. Abby really
liked being able to sleep in the same room as her sister at Brent’s
Place while Andy liked the roof top deck on the 4th floor and
the popcorn machine.
Brent’s Place: How has life been post Brent’s Place?
Melissa: Life has been an adjustment. Making sure that the house
is clean, frantically scrubbing and wiping down everything and
keeping sick siblings away from Megan. A lot of time it is
worrisome, but it is nice to be away from the hospital and back
to some normalcy. Megan is doing so well so that is easing my
mind.
Brent’s Place: What’s your favorite memory of Brent’s Place?
Melissa: The Easter Party was so much fun. It made Megan so
happy to do something normal with other kids. Jackson was
there and it was great being with him also.
Brent’s Place: Are you still involved with
Brent’s Place?
Melissa: Not at this time, but would like
to be once things get settled down I would
love to come to the Kids Cure for Cancer
event in July.
Brent’s Place: Do you have anything else to add?
Michelle: We are so thankful that Brent’s Place is here and we
were able to utilize it. It was so convenient and close to the
hospital. The Brent’s Place staff are so friendly and helpful.

Our Volunteers…
Volunteer Profile: Margi Clute
When Margi isn’t volunteering at Brent’s Place, she can
be found enjoying her retirement from sales and marketing
in the home builiding industry. She enjoys working out at
Greenwood Athletic & Tennis Club, being a member of the
Historic Preservation Board for Downtown Littleton, spending
time with friends and family, reading and traveling with her
husband, Kent.
member of the Resource Development
Committee (RDC), my area of interest is Board activism and
stewardship. I work with the RDC to encourage the Board
of Directors to be more active and involved in Brent’s Place
activities.
How did you find Brent’s Place? In January 2007, I started
volunteering at Brent’s Place when the former Executive
Director asked me if I would like to be involved. I have
continued to volunteer because everyone on staff is helpful,
fun and young! Volunteering at Brent’s Place is a very
meaningful experience for me.
What has been your favorite volunteer experience? There
have been a lot of experiences that I have loved! I really enjoy
working on Kid’s Cure, Dos Casas and Roadless Ride. I also
like being involved in RDC and working with the other
members of the committee. Every Tuesday I look forward to
spending time at Brent’s Place with the staff and families.
When I volunteer, I like to be active and feel like I am doing
something meaningful. At Brent’s Place, I can do that.
How do you volunteer at Brent’s Place? I come to Brent’s
Place every Tuesday from 10 to 5 to volunteer at the front
desk, where I get to know the kids and their families. I am
involved in the Roadless Ride and Kids’ Cure events, helping
the Development Manager find restaurants & food venues
that will donate the food and beverage for these events. As a
What would you tell others interested in volunteering?
It is a very meaningful experience. I feel like I am making a
difference and that it is a meaningful use of my time and
skills. If you have talents & skills that you have developed
over your career, why not use them to benefit a great
organization?

Our Events…
2010 was another successful year for Brent’s Place’s fundraising events.
We would like to thank all of our participants, sponsors and volunteers that contribute endlessly to our success!
Below is a snapshot of the late Summer and Fall Brent’s Place 2010 fundraising events.
These events would not have been possible without the generous support of the Brent’s Place community.
Kid’s Cure
It was an incredibly active summer for Brent’s Place! We kept
our summer event season rolling with Kid’s Cure for Cancer,
our signature event, on July 25th with over 1,180 Brent’s
Place supporters participating in a 5K run, 5K walk or a 1K
Family Fun Run. Following the event, participants enjoyed a
pancake breakfast and community fair with live music. It was
a day of family fun that celebrated the lives of all of our kids
with cancer! It was wonderful to see long time supporters,
past families and community members come together for a
wonderful day in Washington Park. Thanks to our
generous sponsors, participants and volunteers, we
raised over $119,000! Mark your calendars now—
the 2011 Kid’s Cure will take place on July 24th
and you will not want to miss out on all the fun!
Brent’s Place Invitational Golf Tournament
On August 16th, 88 golfers made a difference in the lives of
children with cancer while enjoying a round of golf at Pinehurst
Country Club, one of the premier golf courses in Colorado.
Despite a temporary weather delay, participants were able to
complete the round and post some very impressive scores on
both sides of par! The day ended with cocktails and some
delicious BBQ, compliments of Colorado Catering. We
would like to thank the many sponsors, including presenting
sponsor Performance Building Services, our in-kind donors,
our participants and the staff at Pinehurst for helping us raise
over $53,000 for Brent’s Place and our families. Save the date
for the 2011 Brent’s Place Invitational Golf Tournament on
August 15th, as our golf tournament will be bigger and better
than ever.
Roadless Ride
More than 450 participants spun
their wheels at the 10th Annual
Roadless Ride at Greenwood
Athletic Club (GATC), hitting
a record high of $75,000 raised
in support of Brent’s Place and
our families. Riders participated
in 11 separate hour-long
spinning sessions throughout
the day, led by instructors from
the GATC. For the first time,
11 riders challenged themselves
to a “Roadless Century,” which
requires riders to cycle all 11 hours and 100 miles consecutively
on a stationary bike. Participants in the Roadless Century
raised $19,000 of the $75,000 raised. In addition, Willie
Duncan, a longtime GATC employee, worked tirelessly in
the weeks leading up to the event to raise $8,000 for our kids
with cancer and their families. GATC was honored with the
“Best of the Best” Community-Base program award for the
event and their involvement with Brent’s Place. The Roadless
Ride would not be possible without the hard-work and
dedication of the GATC Staff, Brent’s Place volunteers, and
our incredible corporate sponsors. Special thanks to our
century riders, Paula Neubert, General Manager and
Barbara Lubbers, Assistant General Manager of GATC,
United Healthcare and Newfield Exploration. The 2011
Roadless Ride will take place at Greenwood Athletic &
Tennis Club on October 14, 2011.

Special Thanks
On August 29th, 15 Brent’s Place riders took the challenge
for the toughest century ride in the United States. Brent’s
Place was fortunate to be the beneficiary of the 2010 inaugural
ride. Brent’s Place joined the Downing Group in challenging
cyclists to take on the demanding course and raise or donate
at least one penny per foot of elevation gained. The first year
event was a tremendous success and we thank all those
involved for making Brent’s Place a
part of the festivities. We look forward
to helping the event grow in 2011.
Stay tuned for more information
coming soon about the 2011 Deer
Creek Challenge!
Brent’s Place would also like to thank Pedro Gonzales, General Manager, Marcia Boush, Event Manager and Candyce
Hedlund, Special Events & Public Relations Director at
Texas de Brazil and Rene Harding with Cocktails for a Cause
for hosting events on October 15th to raise money and
gather supplies for our kids with cancer and their families.
Thank you to all who participated in these events!
Urban Navigator
On September 11th, 42 teams
worked to navigate a group adventure
through downtown Denver using
their brains, brawn and funny bones!
This is the 4th year of this successful
event, which raised more than $18,000 in support of Brent’s
Place. Special thanks to Stacia and Chris Buck, the Adventures
for Charity Board and all of the event day volunteers for their
dedication in putting together a fantastic event to benefit
Brent’s Place. Rest up now as you will want to be ready to

Corporate Support Sam’s Club Aurora
Sam’s Club’s VAP program, “Volunteerism Always Pays,” allows
Sam’s Club associates to support four nonprofit organizations

organizations they want to support. Sam’s Club Aurora, located
on Abilene St., has chosen to support Brent’s Place for the
past two years.
Associates from Sam’s Club Aurora have volunteered over
250 hours in 2010. Every month, associates cook a hot meal
for our families with products donated by their Sam’s Club
store. Sam’s Club Aurora also sponsors holiday meals for our
families such as Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas dinner
which are cooked by volunteer associates. In addition, Brent’s
