This change reflects a new brand
— an icon that symbolizes our
child-centered, family-focused care
philosophy, while also symbolizing
guidance, safety and caring.
our mission. protecting children. preserving families. since 1915.
We protect children from abuse, neglect and family separation, and help children overcome
these things when they do happen. Abuse and neglect are significant problems in the
communities we serve, and without help, the long-term impact on children can prevent them
from living healthy, productive lives. Some of our programs aim to keep children and families
together, and others provide a healing home for children who can’t live with their families.
We have nearly a century of experience working with children, and we know that the best way
to accomplish our mission is to work with families, whenever possible, to strengthen their
ability to care for their children.

change is coming.
by Dr. Wayne Carson, CEO
T
he 82nd Texas Legislative session has begun and the next two years will likely
bring dramatic changes for Texas’ children. Two critical issues will have tremendous
impact on how Texas cares for our abused and neglected children.
Critical issue #1 involves how
the state’s $20+ billion budget
deficit is resolved. Steps taken
to balance the budget will
impact services to abused and neglected children, and
prevention programs are likely to experience severe
funding cuts. Over 60,000 children were served in these
programs in 2009. When prevention programs end,
families have few places to turn for help, and children
get hurt.
Critical issue #2 involves state plans to redesign the foster
care system. If these plans are designed well, the new system
could provide exciting opportunities for providers to offer
more comprehensive services to help children heal
from trauma and more quickly find permanent families
to care for them. The success of these efforts will depend
heavily on how the reform is designed, how it is funded,
and how effectively the state and partner agencies can
work together to implement the new plans.
In addition to our range of programs, ACH is actively
involved with our state association and efforts in
Austin to advocate for programs that Protect Children
and Preserve Families. But we can’t do all of this alone.

This year, we are launching the Learn, Advocate, Give
campaign to broaden our outreach and education in this
community, increase local knowledge of the issues facing
children and families, and inspire action, advocacy and
support on behalf of children and families. To kick off this
campaign and in honor of National Child Abuse Prevention
Month, ACH will host the Lend a Hand Luncheon on
April 7, 2011 designed to educate and inspire this community
to action in support of children and families.
So what can you do?
Learn. Join us for this new event or one of our free monthly
Learning Lunches to learn more about issues facing children
and families.
Advocate. Keep abreast of the issues, activities, legislation
and events related to Protecting Children and Preserving
Families. Join us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/
ACHchildandfamily) and forward to your friends and family,
and let everyone know you care about children and families.
Volunteering can also be a uniquely rewarding way to
advocate for children and families. Join our e-mail list from
our website to find out about our greatest volunteer needs.
Give. Every gift counts, no matter how small. A pair of shoes
or a coat may not solve the world’s problems, but helping us
provide those items allows us to meet a youth’s basic needs
and more importantly, begin to teach them that some people
can be trusted to help. Visit our website for a list of our most
current supply needs.
Your dollars go a long way here at ACH. Every gift
goes directly to the services we provide or projects we
are undertaking, with our endowment supporting our
administrative costs. Be sure to read our feature article in
this issue for critical ways your donations can support our
work with homeless youth.
Thank you for your continued support. We are dedicated to
Protecting Children and Preserving Families, and an active
and involved community is the best asset children can have
for a hopeful future.

today’s runaway, throwaway
by Barbara Clark-Galupi, CFRM
T
he National Runaway Switchboard, a federally designated national communication system for runaway and homeless
youth, estimates that 2.8 million teens run away each year in the United States, with 1.6 million of them having slept on
the streets in the last 12 months. But there is more to the term “runaways” today than ever before.
National studies indicate that more than 50% of runaways
may be more accurately referred to as throwaways,
meaning youth whose families put them out of the family
home. These youth indicate that they left home because their
parents either told them to leave or knew they were leaving
and did not care.
For thousands of North Texas youth, the streets are their only
choice. This is the story of just one...
“I was scared,
I was sad,
I was worried,
I was depressed.
I felt alone, hungry,
cold and lost.”
Mystique, now age 21, has lived on the streets. After her
family home in Chicago was destroyed by fire in 2008,
Mystique’s mother moved her family of five to Arlington to
live with extended family. The new combined family of eight
people shared a small two-bedroom duplex. After several
months struggling in Arlington to find work without personal
transportation, Mystique missed her hometown, family and
friends, and decided to return there without her family.
Shortly after her return, she found herself with no place to
live and began to call the streets of Chicago her home. She
donated plasma to get enough money for food and clothes.
She began having seizures and was in and out of the public
hospital, finally being diagnosed with mild epilepsy. A local

youth-serving organization gave her shelter and services in
between visits to the hospital, but her questionable health
prevented her from keeping employment and eventual
independence. After a few months, she returned to her
family in Arlington.
When she returned, her family’s stress levels were high. Her
mother had been able to find her own apartment, but not
employment, and during her absence, Mystique learned
that her mother and younger brother, Legion, age 18, had
had an argument and her mother had thrown Legion
out of the house. Mystique and Legion were
particularly close and Mystique immediately
set out to find him. She found him at the
Salvation Army Shelter in Fort Worth and
convinced her mom to let him come home.
Mystique got a job at Six Flags, walking
or riding her bike over seven miles to work.
Unfortunately, the family reunification did not
last long and Legion was thrown out again,
and not long after, Mystique was
thrown out as well.
For the first few weeks,
Mystique slept on a
Fort Worth friend’s couch.
But the arrangement wasn’t
permanent and Mystique
found herself living on
the streets. For the next
three months, she slept
wherever she could. She
slept on the bathroom
floor of the Greyhound
Bus Station and the locker
room at Six Flags so she
could be close to work,
but eventually she was
discovered. Every few weeks,
she could sleep at her friend’s
house in Fort Worth for a night
or two. Eventually,
she had no
choice but to
sleep on the
streets. “It’s
scary. It’s cold.

a survival tactic; where are you going to use the bathroom,
how are you going to eat, what will the weather be, where
will you sleep. It was hard, really hard, and constantly
stressful,” Mystique says of her time on the streets.
During this time, Mystique would meet up with her brother,
Legion, who was also homeless and was living in a tent in a
homeless tent camp. The siblings would spend entire days at
the library, sharing whatever resources they had with each
other, often only beef jerky and crackers.
By this time, Legion had met Juan and Jessie, with
ACH’s Street Outreach Program, and was receiving
resources and support. The Street Outreach Program
provides and facilitates access to emergency
resources and counseling for homeless youth, and
provides safety and resource information to youth
at risk of homelessness.
Mystique avoided the adult homeless shelters,
not quite considering herself an
adult, despite her age, saying,
“they scared me and made
me uncomfortable.”
Eventually, Legion
introduced her to

successful transition to independent, long-term, permanent
housing and living.
In September of last year, Mystique moved into housing
provided through the LIFE Project. “It’s so much better than
being outside. It’s truly a blessing to have a program like
this, they help you a lot and I am extremely grateful to be
here,” said Mystique.
Mystique has great ambitions. She has plans for her future.
“I want to maintain a job, keep it, and save so that when I
am done with the program I have some money saved to get
my own apartment,” said Mystique. She also wants to go to
culinary school, become a graphic designer, and expand
her custom shoe and clothing design business, Stique Illest
Creations (SIC). To view some of her latest creations, visit
our website at www.ACHservices.org/reACH.
Her brother Legion is also doing well and is off the streets.
With the assistance of ACH’s Street Outreach Team, Legion
was accepted into the Job Corps program, has campusbased housing in McKinney, and is going to school to
become an electrician. Hear from Legion on his experience
with ACH by watching our video at www.ACHservices.org.
“ACH is truly a
blessing, they help
you with any and
everything you
might need,”
says Mystique.

Teen homelessness is a serious problem:
• One in five youth run away before turning 18, with half running
away two or more times
• In 2009, the DFW area yielded 3,278 calls to the National
Runaway Switchboard
• Teens run away from home because of school issues, family
problems, abuse, and threats to their immediate safety
• 32% of homeless teens have attempted suicide
• 1 in 3 homeless teens will be lured into prostitution within 48 hours
A homeless teen is:
• 2 to 3 times more likely to be raped or assaulted than other teens
• 18 times more likely to use crack cocaine
• 16 times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV
• 7 times more likely to die from AIDS
Last year, ACH served 568 runaway, homeless and at-risk youth
through four primary programs:
• Safe Place
• Emergency Youth Shelter
• Street Outreach Program
• The LIFE Project

rebuilding futures for children and families
Wichita Street Campus Project update
Home Improvements campaign
reaches $6.2 million.
Thanks to two generous year-end
gifts, the Home Improvements Capital
Campaign for the Wichita Street
Campus achieved its 2010 fundraising
goal. Cheryl and Fred Moore made a
$500,000 contribution and Pat O’Neal
made a $300,000 contribution. Overall,
$6.2 million of the $9.5 million goal has
now been reached.
Paul E. Andrews Family Welcome Center
on January 6, 2011.
Construction of the Paul E. Andrews
Family Welcome Center is well
underway and on schedule for spring
completion and dedication. This new
facility will bring expanded capacity
to ACH services by providing a childand family-friendly environment for
clients and visitors to the campus. This
facility will provide critical space for
assessments, intakes, therapy and
family meetings, and will feature four
interactive play areas for toddlers, young
children, tweens and teenagers. In
addition, the Andrews Family Welcome
Center will provide office space for
ACH’s Assessment, Intervention and
Referral Services team which fields more
than 5,000 calls for service each year.
“It’s been very exciting to see this
building constructed, knowing that
it will enhance our ability to provide
quality services to the children and
families of this community,”
said Dr. Wayne Carson, CEO.

In December, Campaign Co-Chairs
Julie and Glenn Davidson hosted
a reception in their home to honor the
generosity of those who had contributed
to the campaign. The highlight of the
evening was the announcement by Dr.
Wayne Carson, CEO, that the chapel
on the Wichita Street Campus would be
named for the Davidsons.
Belltower Chapel & Garden, in 2010.
In its first year, the chapel hosted 100
weddings, and bookings for this year
have already surpassed that number.
Belltower Chapel & Garden is ACH’s
first-ever social enterprise that provides
supportive employment for ACH clients,
and in its maturity, is projected to
provide critical annual income to ACH.

Hoot ‘n Holler 2010:
“fun-raising” at its best!
Many generous supporters contributed to the success of another fun-filled Hoot ‘n
Holler held at Reata Restaurant last November. Thanks to a fabulous committee,
co-chaired by Cami Goff and Shannon Ricca, the event raised over $228,000 that
will directly benefit the residential programs of ACH Child and Family Services. A
big thank you to Cami, Shannon and this incredibly talented committee who helped
fill the tables and make this another wonderful evening for a wonderful cause!
Cheers to the

celebrating partnerships
We appreciate all the donors and community groups that support ACH. Every gift helps us fulfill our mission
of protecting children and preserving families in North Texas. Below are just a few of our generous friends
who have recently made a gift to ACH.
Chuy’s –
grand opening a success.
ACH was named the charity of choice for Chuy’s new
West 7th restaurant. Chuy’s donated their pre-opening bar
service proceeds of $3,759 to ACH and served as a toy
drive collection site during the holidays! Thanks to their
super generosity, many of our staff, board and donors
were also treated to some amazing Mexican food.
The wait staff from Chuy’s proudly shares the proceeds from their
pre-opening events with ACH.
But the fun and their support won’t end with the holidays:
Chuy’s will be hosting meals for the clients of some of
our residential programs throughout the year.
Thank you, Chuy’s. We are grateful for your support!
Petroleum Club Guild –
an evening in Paris with the
Petroleum Club Ball.
Celebrating a successful year, members of the Fort Worth
Petroleum Club Guild recently presented ACH with a check
for $20,000, representing the proceeds of their 2010
Petroleum Club Ball. We are grateful for their generosity
and commitment to having fun for a cause!

Cash America –
celebrates a decade of support.
For 10 years, our friends at Cash America have supported
ACH with proceeds from their annual golf tournament. This
year’s proceeds reached a record $27,641! This support
makes a huge difference in the annual operating budget
for ACH, supporting programs that provide safe homes for
children in crisis and programs that provide counseling that
keep families together. A big thank you to our friends at
Cash America for generously giving time and treasure to
support our mission!

Christmas

recap
to you, our angels at Christmas.
I
t is hard to put into words the gratitude we feel to each and every
one of you who helped make the holidays special for our children
and families last December. It seems that every year the need is
greater, with more and more children and families needing a helping
hand. Yet, when we reach out to you, our donors, and ask for your
support, you never disappoint!
This very special time of year brings
out such a wonderful spirit in people
and we are fortunate to see this joyous
miracle of giving in action through the
gratitude of parents who otherwise
wouldn’t be able to afford presents for
their children, and through the laughter,
smiles and tears of joy from children
and youth who are enjoying memories
that will last a lifetime.
From all of you who adopted a child
and carefully shopped for items on their
wish lists, to our caring partners who
underwrote special parties and events
that helped our children celebrate the
joy of giving and getting at Christmas,
to those who organized toy drives
through their businesses, friends and the
community, and to our great volunteers
who helped at parties by wrapping,
sorting, doing crafts and making sure
that the children and families were
treated like VIPs, we THANK YOU
from the bottom of our hearts!

volunteer highlights
looking back at 2010.
ACH Child and Family Services was fortunate to be the recipient of more than 2,500 volunteer
hours last year. At a value of $20.85 per hour, estimated by the Independent Sector, that’s
equal to a donation of $51,557.
Here’s what we can do with $51,557:
•Provide medical examinations by a nurse to 1,145 youth, or
•Provide 6,874 hours of work skills training for teens, or
•Provide summer vacations for our group homes for the next 3 years, or
•Provide housing for 224 nights in our Emergency Youth Shelter, or
•Provide a year’s worth of food for 28 children, or
•Pay the annual salary for two Youth Care Workers (who receive 60 hours of training)

a legacy of protecting children and preserving families.
M
ore than 60 years ago, Alice Davis Walker left a portion of her estate to ACH. At the time of her gift,
ACH was providing homes for orphaned or abandoned children, but the legacy of her gift has done
much more. Alice Walker’s estate gift was one of the founding contributions to the ACH permanent
endowment. For the last six decades, this endowment has fueled the ability of this organization to expand critical
services to children in need and to weather many economic uncertainties.
At the time of her gift, ACH was caring for approximately 40 children. Today,
ACH’s services touch the lives of nearly 4,000 children and families each year.
The tens of thousands of children and families ACH has helped over the last
sixty years are part of the legacy of Mrs. Alice Davis Walker.
In addition to Mrs. Walker, ACH Child and Family Services has been blessed
throughout our nearly 100-year history by many individuals who have added
Protecting Children and Preserving Families to their legacy by including ACH in
their estate plans. Every gift to the endowment ensures quality and compassionate
services today and for decades to come.
Have you given thought to what your legacy can be? For more information about
including ACH in your estate plans, call Beth Zimmerman, CFRE, Vice President of
Development at 817.886.7115 or email her at [email protected].
