Through May 9 – Twenty-six American paintings from the Impressionist era from the remarkable
private collection of San Antonians Marie and Hugh Halff. Key artists in the exhibition are John
Singer Sargent, William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam and Theodore Robinson. Paintings in the
collection are notable for both their range and quality and include superb examples by leading
American masters from the 1870s to 1930. An extra $5 admission charge applies to this exhibit

TWC MOVIE IN THE PARK

Keeping your skin looking
younger

your BlackBerry calendar, and
the candles on your birthday
cake. Chronology and your
real age are two very different
things, especially because your
skin can demonstrate a much
younger you.
Your outer layer may have
been through a lot over the
years, but thanks to this week’s
LVCC, you can still turn back
the clock!
IT’S A FACT: what you eat
has a powerful effect on how
you look and feel.
Food does more than satisfy
your taste buds –it helps you
look great, feel fantastic and
stay beautiful for decades to
come. Eat and stay young by
following these five commandments of long-lasting health and
beauty.
• Shop for color. Antioxidants
are chemicals in foods that give
tomatoes their bright red sheen,
broccoli that lush green color
and eggplant its deep purple
skin. More important, they’re
the compounds that keep lines
from creeping onto your face
and cholesterol from clogging
your arteries. These foods neutralize cell-damaging free radicals, which have been linked to
everything from wrinkles and
age spots to cancer and heart
disease. Because different antioxidants tackle different aging
concerns, your best bet is to get
a variety of them. For example,
the antioxidants in berries help
maintain cognitive and motor
functioning. Pomegranates have
been found to reduce the risk of
heart attack and stroke, broccoli and brussel sprouts contain
compounds that help prevent
breast cancer.
• Fatten up. No, I’m not talking late-night tacos and sausage
biscuits! Monosaturated fats
found in olive oil, fish, nuts,
and seeds have been shown to
lower the risk of age-related
diseases like arthritis, heart
disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer
and even Alzheimer’s. Your
outward appearance will benefit
too since the more omega-3’s
you consume, the more you
reduce your risk of age-related
skin damage.
• Sip red wine. Enjoy drinking
a glass of red vino four to five
days a week (preferably with
a meal, so your body absorbs
it more slowly). The habit has
been shown to reduce the risk of
heart attack, diabetes, and other
life-threatening illnesses. Part of
the credit goes to the alcohol,
which helps soothe inflamed arteries, but red wine – especially
pinot noir – is also full of flayonoids, another class of powerful antioxidants that comes from
the skin of red grapes. Not a big
wine fan? Pour yourself a glad
of Concord grape juice.
• Drink green tea. I’ll bet
you ten bucks there’s no other
food or drink reported to have
as many health benefits as
this green stuff! The Chinese
have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since
ancient times, using it to treat
everything from headaches to
depression. Sipping just one cup
a day will decrease your chances
of developing high blood pressure by 46 percent –drink more
and you’ll reduce your risk by
65 percent.
• Eat less. Reducing the
amount you eat will help you
live longer and prevent the problems related to extra weight that
are also associated with getting
older –heart disease, high blood
pressure, physical limitations.
It also keeps you away from the
dangers of yo-yo dieting –especially the skin stretching that
can make you look years older.

When you want to remodel
something in your home unfortunately it’s not as easy as home
improvement shows make it out
to be. In a 30-minute episode,
a person’s house went from
ghetto-fabulous to country-club
living and of course that’s what
we all wish would happen.
In reality, it takes weeks,
sometimes months, depending
on the size of the job, to get it
done. Everyday workers come
in, and they put in eight to 10
hour shifts; getting little by
little done each day. At first it
is mayhem and you begin to
wonder if it will ever look the
way you want.
Then you’ve come to realize
fancy Hollywood editing has
tricked you. You accept that it
doesn’t happen overnight but
each day and week that passes
you begin to see more and more
progress. Then, slowly you begin to feel a sense of happiness.
The hard work you’ve invested
begins to pay off.
This is the mentality you need
to have about working out and
losing weight.
If you think your chubby face
and jelly rolls will disappear
after one workout, you are sadly
mistaken. It is a process, a long,
painful tedious process to make
a real change. The more work
you put in, the more results you
will see.
Before you workout, go into
it knowing that you are about
to do hard work. Get in a zone
of assurance that change is attainable if you put your all into
your workout.
I’m sure you don’t buy a Spurs
ticket only to watch half of the
game, do you? Then, why would
you lollygag through a workout
and not put your all into it?
Push for results, the faster
you want something to happen
the harder you need to work in
the gym. Take command of your
workout and mix it up.
Keep things fresh by walking
one day, biking the next day, and
swimming when you can. If you
keep coming up with new ideas,
all of a sudden you won’t feel
obligated to workout. Instead,
you will want to exercise. You
will lose weight and have fun—
crazy I know.
People say to me all the time
“It’s easier said than done.” That
is exactly the mentality that
blessed you with your flabby
arms and “cankles” that you’re
presently sporting.
Start with a small goal and
continue to set new ones each
day. Push yourself.
Once you’re under construction, I promise you, you’ll never
want to stop.

El reconocimiento del público se
gana con el trabajo y la dedicación
que se lo pone al trabajo. Eso lo sabe
muy bien Christian Chávez, cantante
y actor que ha sido reconocido a
nivel internacional como miembro
del desaparecido grupo RBD.
Logró ganarse el corazón de
millones de fanáticos alrededor del
planeta, ahora en solitario tendrá que
volver a demostrar que el talento existe. Solo sobre el escenario probará
que su música ha evolucionado. Su
nuevo disco “Almas Transparentes”,
está a la venta y el público, hasta el
momento ha aceptado positivamente
esta nueva etapa del artista.
En su paso por Texas para promocionar este nuevo proyecto tuvimos
la oportunidad de entrevistar al
cantante, quien como siempre se
mostró muy amable con nosotros.
Ahí hablamos de cosas muy interesantes como su disco, sus sueños y
hasta de Ricky Martin. Pero no solo
tomó tiempo para nosotros también
lo compartió con Melanie Méndez,
una niña que fue a verlo. El cantante
se portó muy amable y ella lo lleno
de besos.
L.P. ¿Soñaste alguna vez con
llegar a este momento de estar
presentando tu disco?
Christina Chávez: Siempre hay
sueños, RBD fue un sueno impresionante. El haber tenido la oportunidad
de grabar un disco al igual que haber
tenido la oportunidad de hacer algo
como compositor, hacer coautoría en
dos canciones con Samo, del grupo
Camila, es algo que me tiene muy
contento y lleno de orgullo es un
sueño más que se realiza.
C.C.: Híjole, le pondría no importa el peso.
L.P. ¿Ahora que ya no estás
viajando con el grupo RBD, es
más relajado viajar para presentaciones y promoción?
C.C.: Es relajado pero también es
estresante, porque es de andar de una
ciudad a otra, pero estar trabajando
con las personas que estoy ahora es
L.P. ¿Hay una canción que por
el significado que tiene tu desearías
haberla escrito?
C.C.: “Let it be”, de Los Beatles.

John Quiñones: Una historia de trabajo y éxito

El éxito en la vida de un ser humano se logra a base de esfuerzo
y disciplina. El trabajo de cada día
dedicado a lo que uno ama siempre
trae un sinfín de satisfacciones.
Tal es la historia de John Quiñones, un afamado periodista latino,
orgullosamente nativo de San Antonio, quien con mucha entrega ha
logrado colocarse como uno de los
periodistas más influyentes a nivel
nacional.
Su historia es similar a la de muchos de nosotros que trabajamos
incansablemente con la ilusión de
lograr un lugar dentro de este difícil
mundo del periodismo. En entrevista vía telefónica desde Nueva
York, John Quiñones, nos habló
de sus logros y su historia. Misma
que se asimila a las nuestras, latinos
buscando el sueño americano.
El motivo de esa entrevista era
hablar sobre su nueva serie especial
para el programa Primetime de la
cadena ABC, compañía con la que
lleva laborando más de 25 años.
“El programa se llama, What Would
You Do?, que se traduciría a español
¿Qué harías tú? Más que nada se
trata de la reacción que tendría una
persona si ve algo injusto. Por ejemplo si vemos a un señor discutiendo
con la esposa o su novia y parece
que la va a golpear, si alguien es
testigo que sería lo que haría”.
“En estas situaciones tenemos
actores que desarrollan la escena y
parece de verdad, esa es solo una de
las escenas que hacemos. Podemos
ver las reacciones del público que a
veces no hace nada, otras grita para
defender y llama al 911. Hay otra
situación como la un niño perdido en
la calle que también presentaremos.
Hay gente que dice eso no me afecta
y no creen que se deben meter y
otros que deben meter y lo hacen”,
explicó Quiñones.
Otras de las escenas que han
grabado es sobre la discriminación
racial, que es una triste realidad en
algunos lugares del país.
John Quiñones agrega, “Uno que
filmamos de un mexicano que estaban golpeando, era un actor al que
supuestamente estaban golpeando
cuatro adolescentes americanos.
En Nueva York pasó lo mismo en
la vida real, porque hubo dos latinos
que fueron asesinados. Viéndolo
en la televisión ojala que la gente
aprenda cómo reaccionar”.
El poder que está adquiriendo
la comunidad hispana en esta país
ha ido en aumento, por lo que
necesitamos representación en
diferentes ámbitos, uno de ellos el
periodismo. “Necesitamos muchos
latinos reporteros y corresponsales especialmente en las cadenas
grandes americanas, son muchos
los reporteros pero el porcentaje
de reporteros latinos es muy bajo”,
comentó Quiñones.

pues quien mejor que un latino
parta comunicar e informar a su
comunidad, sobre todo tomando
en cuenta que muchos de ellos solo
hablan español. “Todo lo que veo en
la televisión y periódicos es lo que
dicen los gringos o los políticos. Nadie está hablando con la gente que
sufre y que están aquí solo porque
necesitan el trabajo. Necesitamos
más reporteros latinos en los medios
porque como van a poder entrevistar
a la gente si los reporteros no hablan
español”. Puntualizó el exitoso
comunicador.
El periodista no perdió la oportunidad de enviar un mensaje a todos
los jóvenes para invitarlos a que no
se limiten y luchen por un futuro
mejor. “No pierdan la esperanza, no

pongan atención a la gente que les
dice que nunca van a llegar a estos
niveles, no pongan atención a eso,
porque a mí me decían lo mismo”.
De su historia personal, John
Quiñones, compartió cosas que no
imaginábamos como su infancia
en San Antonio. Con estas declaraciones esperamos que la motivación
para todos aquellos que buscan
realizarse en la vida siga creciendo.
“Yo nací en un barrio de San Antonio muy pobre, donde boleaba
zapatos por diez centavos, era por
la calle Guadalupe. Mi familia eran
trabajadores del campo, no hablaba
el inglés. Yo no hablaba inglés hasta
que llegué al primer grado en la
escuela”.
Tenía treces años cuando fuimos
a las cosechas de las cerezas. Anduvimos ahí en la pizca del tomate,
nos levantábamos a las cinco de la
mañana a la cosecha.
Su madre fue la única persona
que creyó en el. “Para mi nadie tenia
grandes esperanzas solo mi mama y
yo. Cuando empecé a trabajar en la
radio me decían que podría ser un
buen reportero, pero que no tuviera
esperanzas de llegar a la televisión,
porque no tenía lo que necesitaba,
que tenía un acento muy mexicano
y que nunca iba a aprender a hablar
bien ingles. Lo que tiene que hacer
uno es no ponerle atención a lo negativo y mantenerse positivo, pensar
que todo es posible, yo soy el ejemplo de eso”. Expresó Quiñones.
“Si me hubieran dicho en San
Antonio que algún día iba estar en
Nueva York con estos gigantes de
la profesión del periodismo, en la
televisión, les hubiera dicho que
estaban locos. Pero el sueño fue realizado trabajando bien duro, trabaje
en Houston y San Antonio después
regresé a estudiar a la universidad
Columbia Graduate School of
Journalism a sacar una maestría de
periodismo”, agregó.
Los reconocimientos han sido
muchos para John Quiñones a lo
largo de su carrera pero su primer
premio Emmy, lo motivó a seguir
creciendo, a ser más creativo en sus
futuros proyectos.
Quiñones ha hecho lo necesario
para darle a su trabajo el realismo y
veracidad que merece, no importa
que en él exponga su propia vida,
“Como reportero fui a Laredo,
Texas con cámaras escondidas, ahí
me conseguí un coyote (traficante
de humanos) que me cruzara por el
Rio Grande como lo hacen muchos
inmigrantes. Por trecientos dólares
me consiguió un seguro social falso
y mi certificado de nacimiento falso,
me puso en un tubo y viaje por el
rio”, finalizó Quiñones.

Would You Do?, transmitido el día 7
de mayo, la serie continuará los días
29 de junio, 6 y 13 de julio, a las 9
p.m. hora del este, 8 p.m. hora del

Can any movie which stars the
gorgeous Scarlett Johansson ever be
bad? I really don’t think so. While,
Scarlett (“He’s Just Not That Into
You,” “The Island”) is not the lead
actress of my latest movie review, I’m
sure “Iron Man 2” would not have
been as enjoyable without her.
The action-packed comic-based
film returns to the big screen with
an even more amazing cast. Robert
Downey Jr. (“The Soloist,” “Tropic
Thunder”) returns as the cocky bad
boy, Tony Stark, A.K.A., Iron Man.
Also returning is Gwyneth Paltrow
(“Bounce,” “A Perfect Murder”), resuming her role as Pepper Potts, Tony
Stark’s classy and loyal assistant.
A new addition to the cast that
I found very interesting was Don
Cheadle (“Traitor,” “Hotel Rwanda”).
Cheadle replaced Terrence Howard
as Rhodey, Iron Man’s partner.
Rumor has it that the Howard was
not offered the money he wanted for
the sequel so he decided skip it. Others say, director Jon Favreau, who
plays Happy Hogan in the movie,
was not happy with Terrence Howard’s performance in the first “Iron
Man.” Regardless of all of the Hollywood
gossip, Cheadle fit well into the
role and did better than I expected.
Someone I knew would do well was
the talented Mickey Rourke (“The
Wrestler,” “Sin City”).
Rourke plays the evil Ivan Vanko,
Iron Man’s sworn enemy in the
movie. Let me be the first to say
that I think Rourke is the real star of
this movie. Not only did he have the
perfect look for the part, his acting
was spectacular.
I’m glad to see Rourke continue to
climb out of the rut was stuck in a few
years back. What about the scene in
the movie trailer where Rourke is going after Iron Man on the speedway?
It’s as good as it looks.
Other actors you may recognize
in the film include the commanding
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury,
Kate Mara, and the ever-funny Gary
Shandling, just to name a few.
Of course, I know you want to
hear more about the movie so let
me recap it for you: While the
movie was a little long for my taste,
it was more than worth the time. It
has more action than the first “Iron
Man” and was actually better, in my
humble opinion. Downey seemed
more comfortable in the role and the
graphics in the movie were outstanding. Oh, and did I mention Scarlett
Johansson?
This is one movie I would definitely buy on DVD. It has everything
you want in an action film and the
comedic undertone was definitely
a plus.
Now, I will give you one very important tip. As was the case in the first
film, there is a hidden bonus scene in
the last seconds of the movie, after
the credit roll.
The credits are extremely long
but you won’t regret staying for the
surprise, a hint at a new movie coming soon.
So, is it good? Watch it and you
decide!

Epic Chicano film
deals with hard issues

“The thing about lowriding,
we don’t really go anywhere.
We just take our time getting
there. You know what I’m saying? Going slow,” these words
were said by Benjamin Bratt
who plays Che Rivera in his
latest film, “La Mission.”
This line sets the stage-so to
speak- for “La Mission,” a film
that reveals why a traditional
father must do what he has to
do in order to face the raw truth
and expose the vulnerability of
his manhood.
“It’s a story of a man we all
recognize as your typical Latino macho male,” explained
Jesse Borrego, who plays Rene,
Che’s best friend. “He’s an exveterano from the streets. He’s
cleaning up his act, raising his
son on his own, which he’s very
proud of.”
Che Rivera, a man from a different era, works as a bus driver
to provide a decent home for his
motherless son, Jesse, played by
Jeremy Ray Valdez.
His street-tough masculinity
and his talent creating beautiful lowrider cars earn him the
respect of his peers in the barrio.
However, his explosive temper
causes everyone to fear him.
When Che finds out that his
only son is gay, it causes a
painful separation between the
two. Kicked out of his home,
Jesse turns to his god-father and
Che’s best friend, Rene. “I’m
kind of the opposite,” stated
Borrego. “I’m like the evolved
Chicano.”
Isolated, Che can’t control
his anger while dealing with
his inner demons. “He destroys
this beautiful relationship that
he’s created over the years and
it shocks both of them because
all they have is each other,” said
Borrego. “So he again turns to
all of those strong macho values
but they don’t work for him
anymore.”
The privately financed film,
which premiered at the 2009
Sundance Film Festival, was
clearly a labor of love for the
Bratt brothers: Peter wrote and
directed it, Benjamin is the
star and both took a producer’s
credit.
They were born in San Francisco in the early 60s and the
film is reminiscence of the Mission District of their youth.

the inner workings of the Latin
community. It’s about having
to evolve,” said Borrego. “It’s
a beautiful film because it’s
a changing barrio –there are
old traditional Latino values,
there’s arte in the streets but
there’s also the struggle to survive on the streets.”
The story gives a truthful
depiction of a society that is
strengthened by religious tradition and social ways. “There’s a
kind of discussion and a theme
that says, ‘Hey, if you’re really
familia and you’re very proud
of your cultura, what if somebody you love and are close to
is different from that? How do
you deal with that?’” mentioned
Borrego.
It also addresses an important
issue that many people would
rather sweep under the rug than

it becomes a threat to someone’s hardcore personal beliefs.
“What should be just a little
barrio story is taken to a universal level where people have
to talk about these hard to talk
about themes,” added Borrego.
“I think everybody is going to
walk away with beauty in their
heart, they’re going to change
the way they think about certain
things in the barrio.”
And Benjamin Bratt’s performance? “I’d be surprised if he
doesn’t get an Academy Award
nomination,” stated Borrego.
“He really takes this typical
Chicano character and totally
flips it around.”
Not only did Borrego play
Bratt’s best friend, he actually
played Talisa Soto’s husband,
who happens to be Bratt’s wife
in real life. “Ben kept joking, ‘Hey, you guys look gorgeous together!” and I joked
back, ‘Yeah, what happened,
why’d you write out all the love
scenes?’” said Borrego. “It was
a lot of fun.”
As if the story weren’t enough,
the visuals and sounds are like
no other. “It’s a killer soundtrack,” he said. “The visuals
are beautiful, you have lowriders, you have classic lowrider
culture, you got familia, you
got the mixture of culturas in
the barrio en La Mission –you
have a lot of these things happening.”
On Thursday, the Mayan 14
Theatre hosted a special screening of “La Mission” where red
carpet photos of Jesse Borrego
with fans were taken followed
by the showing of the film and
a Q&A of the actor.

algo que me tiene muy contento.
Estoy feliz de estar promocionado
ya el disco.
L.P. ¿Qué otros sueños quieres
lograr en esta carrera?
C.C.: Obviamente quiero una carrera de largo plazo, estoy buscando
una carrera así. Soy consciente que
estoy empezando nuevamente, quiero que la gente escuche mi música,
que se den cuenta de la parte musical
de Christian, porque han escuchado
chismes y controversias pero lo más
importante para mí es que la gente
conozca mi música. Yo quiero llegar
a todos los rincones con mi música.
L.P. Ahora que están pasando
toda la situación de la separación
de familias por que los padres se
tiene que regresar a su país. ¿Qué
les dices a esos hijos que tiene que
enfrentar esta difícil situación?
C.C.: Ojala se considere más la
familia porque es triste lo que está
pasando. Yo les digo a los chicos
que no están solos y que la familia
está ahí aunque estén lejos. Que no
importa que estén en otros países la
presencia de la familia siempre está
cerca. Les aconsejo que sean fuertes
y se agarren a sus creencias y su fe.
L.P. Tú creciste en Reynosa,
cerca de la frontera con Estados
Unidos, tienes parte de los dos
mundos. ¿Qué aprendiste de este
país?
C.C.: Fue la música, gracias a
Dios tuve la oportunidad de aprender el idioma y tener el gusto de los
musicales que es el teatro musical.
También la moda que me gusta
mucho, creo que aprendemos cosas
buenas y malas, pero así es en esta
vida, uno generalmente aprende las
cosas malas primero.
L.P. ¿Aspiras a un reconocimiento como un Grammy, Latin
Grammy o un premio Billboard?
C.C.: Claro que si aspiro a eso,
pero estoy consciente que es un
trabajo de hacer poco a poco. Es
hacer un trabajo con mucha fuerza
y muchas ganas.
L.P. Cuéntanos de tu amistad
con el famoso Pérez Hilton, pues
hace días vimos una foto donde
apareces junto a él.
C.C.: Es una persona súper amable muy extrovertida, es latino, esta
interesado en todo lo que pasa en la
farándula latina. Fue para mí una
gran oportunidad de estar celebrando
su cumpleaños en Las Vegas.
L.P. Ahora que Ricky Martin
declaró su homosexualidad. ¿Qué
opinas y que palabras le dirías?
C.C.: Que orgullo. Me siento
orgulloso de él porqué tiene la fuerza interna y lo proyecta. El hizo
un gran favor a toda esta gente que
estamos en esto, es un gran paso de
seguir en la lucha, lo admiro mucho
y lo respeto.
L.P. ¿De tu disco que canción es
la que encuentras mas especial?
C.C.: “Sígueme”, es una canción
que yo le compuse a un amigo que
pasa por una enfermedad difícil. Le
compuse una canción que lo hiciera
sentir bien, que no fuera melancólica
sino que hablara de cómo estamos
ahí los amigos para ayudarlo y que
no se sienta asolo.
L.P. ¿Hay alguna anécdota
que te ha pasado y nos quieras
contar?

C.C.: Me pasan cosas chistosas
todo el tiempo, una vez me paso
que me invitaron a un evento de
beneficencia a presentar a un pintor
que es muy famoso en México en el
estado de Oaxaca. Yo no tenía idea
de quién era, no lo concia. A la hora
de anunciarlo digo mal el nombre y
la gente se me quedó viendo como
que ese no es el nombre. Lo repetí y
lo volví a decir mal, hasta que entró
alguien más y dijo el nombre correcto. Fue algo muy embarazoso.

Flaco Jimenez headlines 29th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival

Men and women come of all ages
and walks of life to eat, drink and
best of all, to dance! From May 11
to the 15 the Guadalupe Cultural Arts
Center will be hosting their 29th annual Tejano Conjunto Festival in San
Antonio at the historic Guadalupe
Theatre, 1301 Guadalupe Street,
and the nearby Rosedale Park, 342
Dartmouth.
The festivities include professional bands and talented student
groups playing music that will
surely have you dancing. Most of
the groups appearing at the festival
are from South Texas; however, they
will also have a Tejano band from
Japan and a Tex-Mex band from the
Netherlands.
This year the party will be ending

Flaco Jimenez told La Prensa, “I’m
excited to be doing it again.” “It’s
another reunion of many talented
performers.”
Fans will enjoy several of his past
hits along with new tunes he’s been
working on. “I’ll be performing different material but it’s all staying true
to myself –conjunto.”
Currently, Jimenez is working
on his last solo project and is now
rounding up several well-known artists he’s worked with in the past such
as, Toby Torres, Oscar Tellez, Hentry
Zimmerle, Max Vaca, Hugo Gonzalez, Nick Villarreal, Jesse Ponce,
Fred Ojeda and Tomas Ortiz. “These
guys are a group of people that have
been with me throughout the years,
ever since I started recording.”
“I’ve seen, not all, but most of it,”
said Jimenez, “so this will be my last
solo because at my age, I’ve been
on the road and I’ve gone through a
lot of experiences with people from
around the world and I’m ready for
my last solo.” but I’m not going to
quit. I’m going to keep on recording with different bands, groups
or whoever is interested I’ll do it,”
added Jimenez.
Flaco Jimenez continues to win
recognition as a world-class musician. He has won five Grammy
awards including one for his roots
conjunto album on Arista Records.
The highly-respected San Antonio
native has been one of the leading
exponents “Tex-Mex” music for
over 40 years, however, he shows
no sign of slowing down. “I’m not
going to quit,” he stated. “I’m going
to keep on recording with different
bands, groups or whoever’s interested I’ll do it. We actually have a
plan to go on the road with the Texas
Tornados.”
Having worked with some of the
biggest names in popular music,
Flaco Jimenez continues to be a
much-loved and much-sought after
musician, particularly in his home
state of Texas.
Interested in creating your own
tunes? Morning workshops at the
Guadalupe Theater will be teaching the mechanics and music of the
accordion and the bajo sexto–the
12 string guitar commonly used in
norteño and tejano music.
Accordion workshops will be
taught by conjunto accordion great,
Oscar Hernandez. He will also teach
a workshop in Accordion Maintenance, tuning and repair. Bajo sexto
will be taught by Grammy-Award
winner Max Baca and accordion by
Grammy-Award winner Joel Guzman. Workshop prices range from
$35 per session or $50 per day (two
sessions).
This event has become nationally
known for its presentation of the
Texas-Mexican Conjunto, a musical form that evolved from musica
norteña and was developed by TexasMexican working-class musicians,
beginning with Narcisco Martinez,
the “father” of conjunto music. Since
its founding more than two decades
ago, this festival has grown in popu-

larity, drawing a diverse and large
audience from around the country
and from abroad.
Ticket prices for the three-day
musical showcase at Rosedale Park
are $12 to $15 per day. Pre-sale threeday passes are $30 for GCAC members, $35 for non-GCAC members.
Crowd attendance tends to reach
well over ten thousand, with previous years climbing as high as 40,000.

El Trofeo de la Copa Mundial de la
FIFA, una visita histórica en Texas

El estado de Texas recibió una
visita sin precedentes, El Trofeo de
la Copa Mundial de la FIFA estuvo
dos días consecutivos en la ciudad
de Houston. Un evento histórico, así
se puede calificar, porque el trofeo
estuvo presente en ochenta y tres
países.
En Estados Unidos solo dos urbes,
Miami y Houston, tuvieron el privilegio de tener esta obra de arte, que
no solo tiene un valor material, sino
sentimental para todos los amantes
de fútbol.
Las festividades dieron inicio el
sábado primero de mayo con un
evento benéfico, donde alumnos
de una escuela local recibieron la
motivación de uno de los jugadores
con más historia en este deporte, el
señor Enrique Borja, también estuvo
presente la cantante Ana Isabelle.
Además las instituciones, Asociación para el Avance de los Mexicanoamericanos (AMAA, por sus siglas
en inglés) y Neighborhood Centers Inc. recibieron colaboraciones
económicas por parte de Coca Cola y
WalMart, en alianza con FIFA.
La diversidad cultural es algo que
tiene en común la ciudad de Houston
con el fútbol. Este deporte es jugado
en todas partes del mundo y en la
ciudad de Houston habita gente de
muchos países. En el evento no fue
la excepción, ya que la diversidad
de personas se hizo presente durante
los dos días que duró esta fiesta futbolera.
“Este evento estaba lleno de expectativas. Nos dijeron que en Houston
podríamos tener más de veinte mil
fanáticos y lo estoy viendo ahora.
Estamos muy sorprendidos por el
número de gente que está llegando
el día de hoy. No culpo a la gente por
querer estar aquí, tenemos muchas
cosas para ellos como la película
de la FIFA y la foto que se pueden
tomar con el trofeo”, comentó Bryan
Chelnaut, vocero de la FIFA.
Desde un día antes que se abrieran
las puertas para ver el trofeo, la gente
ya estaba acampando fuera del lugar.
Tal fue el caso de Cintia Reyes de
veinte años de edad y su hermanita
de trece.
Al preguntarle si quería ver a David Bisbal o el trofeo dijo, “David
Bisbal es una cosa, pero ver el trofeo
es una experiencia única que se da
una vez en la vida. Tenemos la oportunidad aquí en Houston debemos
de tomar ventaja de esto. Llegamos
como a las once de la mañana para
ver todo, estamos muy ansiosas que
llegue el día de mañana”.
El día del consumidor fue patrocinado por Coca Cola y estuvo lleno
de actividades donde los asistentes
sintieron la adrenalina del mundial con los juegos organizados en
el campo. Además fueron testigos
de un gran evento donde participó el
cantante David Bisbal como estrella
principal, compartiendo escenario
con K’NAAN, cantante de origen
africano, con quien interpreta el tema
del mundial “Waving Flag”.
“Es la primera vez que viene la
copa al estado de Texas, para nosotros
fue una decisión difícil, porque muchos mercados alrededor del mundo
querían llevar la copa a sus mercados.
Solamente ochenta y tres países de
los doscientos donde Coca Cola tiene
presencia tuvieron la oportunidad de
tener la copa. Tres países tuvieron la
suerte de tener la copa en más de una
ciudad esos fueron Brasil, México
y Estados Unidos”, dijo Reynaldo
Parra, vicepresidente de mercadotecnia de Coca Cola.
Algo que nos llamó la atención
fue la seguridad que tuvo el trofeo
en todo momento, por lo que el
vocero de la FIFA, Bryan Chelnaul
nos compartió su opinión sobre esta
difícil tarea de resguardar el trofeo
más aclamado del mundo.
“La seguridad del trofeo es de alta
prioridad para nosotros, es un trofeo
original no es una réplica. La seguridad es muy estricta, porque el primer
trofeo de la copa mundial fue robado
dos veces, queremos asegurarnos que
esto no pase con este trofeo”, dijo
Chelnaut.
Agregó, “El trofeo esta resguardado por una caja de cristal, porque
este trofeo solo lo pueden tocar las
manos del equipo ganador y jefes de
estado. Nadie más puede tocar este
trofeo y quien lo toca tiene que usar
guantes para poderlo transportar”,
concluyó el vocero de la FIFA.
De la ciudad de Houston el trofeo
se fue directamente a Sud África,
donde esperará el día en que las
manos del equipo ganador lo alcen,
coronándose como los más grandes
del Mundial de Fútbol 2010.

Mi nombre es Yolanda, y tengo 5 hermanos,
siempre hemos convivido muy bien, como una
familia unida, el caso es que hace varios meses
tuve una discusión con una de mis hermanas,
ella es muy rencorosa y pues aunque yo no lo
soy, esta vez no di mi brazo a torcer. Esta semana mi mamá nos pidió a todos que fuéramos
a su casa para festejar el día de las madres, yo
no sé que hacer, por un lado quiero complacer
a mi mamá, pero por el otro, me gustaría que mi hermana fuera
más humilde y tratara de arreglar las cosas conmigo, sin embargo
ella sigue en el mismo plan egoísta y de molestia. ¿Qué hago?

Querida Yolanda:
Las peleas y diferencias entre familias son comunes, sin embargo
hay que tener en cuenta que la familia es el vínculo más importante
de una persona, creo que debes hablar con tu hermana para que arreglen sus problemas, no esperes a que sea ella la que dé el primer
paso, tu mamá merece ver a sus hijos unidos y en armonía, dale ese
regalo de paz a tu madre. Y recuerda no importa lo que pase dentro
de una familia, ellos son las personas que estarán contigo en las
buenas y en las malas, cuida de ella.
Queridos lectores, quiero compartir una carta de hija que
perdió a su madre cuando era muy pequeña.
Mamá… Solo recuerdo haberte visto en mis sueños, sé que fuiste
hermosa porque tengo tus fotografías, por cierto, son mi tesoro mas
valioso. Y aunque cuando te fuiste era muy pequeña, ya te amaba. Y
cuando estábamos tristes mis hermanos y yo, en las noches veíamos
el cielo y les decía que la estrella más brillante y grande eras ¡tú! A
veces, cuando estaba triste le reclamaba a Dios por haberte llevado, mi
abuelita me decía, Dios se llevó a tu mami porque necesitaba un angelito
en el cielo, pero yo no entendía porque Dios le había quitado la mamá
a tres niños pequeños. Ahora mamá, entiendo que Dios no se equivoca,
él tiene un destino para cada uno de nosotros, y solo él sabe que es lo
mejor. Aun me haces mucha falta, aun te extraño, aun te necesito, aun
quiero una mirada de dulzura, un abrazo fuerte, una palabra de aliento,
un hombro para llorar, aun quiero tantas cosas… pero sé que desde el
cielo guías cada uno de mis pasos, estas a mi lado siempre, celebras
mis éxitos y me alientas en mis derrotas. Mamá gracias por darme la
vida, por dejarme en manos de una mujer maravillosa, mi abuela, no
pudiste haber hecho mejor elección, ella me dio el mejor ejemplo, los
mejores valores, me enseñó a ser responsable, trabajadora, a valorar la
vida, a ser mejor persona, me enseñó que no importa cuántas veces me
caiga, lo importante es que me levante. Gracias Abue, eres mi Madre
aquí en la tierra, Feliz día. Mamá te amo, siempre estás en mi corazón
