Reading, Part 3
Beispieltest 1
Read this text and then choose the right answers to the questions.
There has been a real-life Jaws-attack in Mexico
this week. A mother of two from Canada on holiday in Cancun who was attacked by a shark
while swimming has survived. As always, reality was far worse than the film. The woman’s father said she was very lucky to be alive and not
to have lost a limb. His daughter, Nicole, a
38-year-old nurse, is awake and breathing after
undergoing extensive surgery in a seven-hour
long operation to repair severe wounds to her
left arm and leg caused by a shark. Contrary to
many local media reports, doctors did not have
to amputate, but are not certain of any long-term
effects of the injuries. Nicole’s husband arrived
in Cancun late on Wednesday to be with his
wife. The couple’s two daughters, aged 6 and 7,
remained at home in Canada. Nicole’s father
said his daughter was in Cancun with a group of
10 friends celebrating their fitness instructor’s
50th birthday. They had just finished a game of
also dreimal lesen. Beim ersten
Mal verschaffen Sie sich einen
Gesamteindruck.

volleyball shortly before noon on Monday and decided to step into the water to
get cooled off. There were about 20 people in the water at the time when suddenly a lifeguard ordered everyone to leave the water immediately. “We were no
more than waist-deep and I looked out and could see people pointing at something in the water,” recounted one of the guests, who was also on vacation in
Cancun with her 15-year-old daughter. “I looked and thought, ‘Oh my God, it’s a
shark.’” As swimmers were leaving the water, four lifeguards on jet skis headed
off from the shore and surrounded the shark, revving their engines in an attempt to frighten it away from people in the water trying to get ashore.
“The next thing I saw was two of the jet skis pulling someone out of the water.
There was so much blood in the water and all over the lifeguards,” she said. The
other hotel guests had to watch helplessly as the lifeguards brought Nicole on to
the beach and began treating her wounds. She was conscious, but unable to talk.
Her left leg and shoulder had bite marks. It was almost as if her leg, which had a
gash down to the bone, had been bitten by the shark and then she had reached
down to fend off the shark with her arm. At first, Nicole only had one friend to
help her, but was soon joined by a fellow nurse staying at the resort who took
control of the situation. She ordered guests to take off their shirts and get towels
to wrap the wounds. Nicole was then carried to a waiting ambulance that had
arrived quickly in the meantime. The beach in front of the resort remained
closed on Wednesday as resort officials searched for the shark. No one was allowed in the water. But everyone was so scared that it wasn’t necessary to check.
Later reports confirmed that there had been sightings of three sharks south of
the resort, but everyone is keeping quiet about it so the guests don’t get frightened and cancel reservations. The official reason for the no swimming order is
that the “waves are too high”, but everyone knows it’s because the risk of shark
attacks hasn’t been ruled out yet.
