Diane Nemerov wird in New York geboren.
Sie wächst in einer wohlhabenden Umgebung in New York auf.
Lernt Allan Arbus kennen, den sie 1941 heiratet.
Während des 2. Weltkrieges bildet sich Allan Arbus zum Fotografen an der Signal Corps
Photography School in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, aus.
Er richtet im heimischen Badezimmer eine provisorische Dunkelkammer ein, und bringt
seiner Frau bei, was er bei seiner Ausbildung gelernt hat.
Nach Kriegsende beginnt für beide eine Karriere als Modefotografen.
Mitte der 1950er Jahre beginnt Diane Arbus das Studium der Fotografie an der New
School for Social Research in New York, hauptsächlich bei Lisette Model.
Auf Model’s Anregung hin beendet sie ihre kommerzielle Arbeit, um ihre eigenen
künstlerischen Ideen zu verwirklichen.
Schon bald kann sie ihre Bilder in der „Esquire“, im „New York Times Magazine“, im
„Sunday Times Magazine“ (London) u.a. veröffentlichen.
Diane Arbus trennt sich von ihrem Mann Allan Arbus.
Sie fotografiert nun einerseits ‚normale Leute’, andererseits Menschen, die am Rande der
Gesellschaft stehen.
Sie wechselt von der 35 mm-Kamera auf eine Kamera mit 6x6 Filmformat. Sie beschäftigt
sich intensiv mit der Herstellung von Abzügen.
Schließlich konzentriert sie sich auf schwarzweiss–Abzüge, die das gesamte Negativ
zeigen. Intensive Arbeit mit Blitzlicht.
Diane Arbus wird mit dem ‚Guggenheim Fellowship’ ausgezeichnet.
Sie unterrichtet an der Parsons School of Design und der Cooper Union in New York,
sowie an der Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.
Ihre Arbeiten werden zusammen mit Werken von Lee Friedlander und Gary Winogrand in
der Ausstellung “New Documents” im MOMA, New York, gezeigt.
Sie stellt ein Portfolio mit 10 Aufnahmen für ihre erste limitierte Auflage zusammen.
Im Juli desselben Jahres nimmt Diane Arbus sich das Leben.
