When Skeletons Are Sexy
Teenagers are becoming more and more obsessed with their weight. A survey by the Society
For Eating Disorders shows that this problem is getting worse. One girl in twenty–five is
likely to suffer from some type of anorexia1.

Studies have shown that girls as young as nine years old are choosing their friends according
to how thin they are. Not–so–slim girls find it hard to find friends. Before they are even
teenagers, girls without the 'perfect body' often feel lonely and depressed. They go on
extremely dramatic diets and even try to starve themselves. The people who suffer from
anorexia often hide it because they know that many people won't understand or will try to
persuade them to stop dieting.
Renay, who is now 18, says her problem started when she was 14. She says, "I decided to go
on a diet because my best friend was much thinner than me. She was also very popular. I
thought if I lost weight, people would like me more and I would have more confidence."
This kind of peer pressure worked well with Renay's diet. She lost weight and people told her
she looked good and sexy. So she lost even more weight. She got used to missing meals and
saying she had eaten when she hadn't. She had seen very skinny fashion models in magazines
like Vogue and she wanted to be like them. She became obsessed, started hating her body and
starving herself until she became seriously ill.
Peer pressure is a problem not only for girls but also for boys. Body image and looks are
important for them, too. They are also teased and bullied for being overweight and they have
problems finding girlfriends. Advertising and the media present us the models. Today it's no
longer enough to be simply 'men'. The image of a successful and attractive man includes a
slim body with strong muscles. The fat–free, six–pack–stomach2 is in. To look like this, boys
have come up with a number of ideas: laxatives3, diet tablets and hours of excessive sport.
Fashion magazines don't think they are responsible. Vogue's editor says teenagers get anorexia
because they suffer from a low opinion of themselves. He blames their friends and family for
not supporting them enough. This is true, except for the fact that women's magazines and an
increasing number of men's magazines are constantly showing pictures of fit, healthy,
glamorous people having a wonderful time. This can put pressure on young people, who may
think to themselves: 'If I looked like that, my problems would be over.'
Many girls believe that they will be more attractive to boys if they are thinner. British
comedian Alan Davies thinks this is crazy. He says, "When I was at school I don't remember
anyone saying 'Let's go into the biology laboratory and find that skeleton; she's sexy!' "

there used to be, they will probably earn a lot of (6) ________________. We shouldn't forget

'Freedom Paradise' has got its own private beach so that the customers are not

Have fun with the 'test'. Get back to me soon.

Using structures/Passing on messages
1. During an investigation into why more and more teenagers are suffering from mental
illness, some of the data got lost. Try to understand and reconstruct the text.
Please underline the option below the text which you think is correct.
Teenage depression
Being a teenager __1__ difficult. Emotions and moods change rapidly. Many teenagers feel
confused and afraid when the safety of childhood is over. Experts say that things are even
harder __2__ days. One of them says, "We live in particularly difficult times for a growing
youngster. There is lots of pressure and a lot of broken homes. Some kids have difficult
relationships with __3__ parents, others have no one to support them."
In fact, everyone __4__ unhappy, lonely or misunderstood from time to time. But a small
number of teenagers become depressed __5__ weeks or months, and they begin to find that
they can't continue with their normal lives.
Many teenagers are afraid to ask for help, or __6__ how to ask for it. Perhaps they don't even
realise that they are depressed. It is usually other people – friends, parents and teachers, __7__
find out about their depression and offer help.
If you __8__ about a friend, listen to their problems and try to be sympathetic, and be patient.
It's a good idea for teenagers who feel depressed to try and talk to someone they like and feel
comfortable __9__ . But if they don't want to talk to friends and family, there are lots of
people who are there to help. These youngsters could talk to their teacher or school counsellor
or maybe their doctor. Alternatively, there are telephone helplines which give confidential
help to anyone with a problem.
It is most important to remember that everyone feels sad and unhappy sometimes, that's
natural. Remember that, no matter how bad you feel, the feelings of sadness and happiness
__10__ to an end one day.
