PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
PRINCIPAL’S MORNING TEA
I had the pleasure of sharing morning tea with around 50
students last week. These students had achieved their
School Award and they enjoyed being made to feel very
special in the staff room. I must give very special thanks
to Kath Edwards and the canteen staff who cater for this
event several times each term, without their support this
award would not be possible. Congratulations to all
students who have received a school award this year.
SCHOOL SWIMMING
Year 2 Swimming Scheme started yesterday. Thank you
to Year 2 teachers for supporting this program which is a
DEC sponsored learn to swim and swimming
improvement program.
2016 ENROLMENT
We are currently looking at classes for 2016. If you know
your child will not be with us next year could you please
inform the office and if you know of anyone who will be
enrolling with us next year but has not done so yet, could
you please ask them to contact the school.
ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING
Teachers are currently very busy preparing final data for
school reports to parents. Assessment is an ongoing
process and every day teachers are assessing to prepare
appropriate learning in their classes. Tracking systems for
these ongoing assessments are developed by teachers
and some are set in place by the school or State. When
preparing reports, teachers refer back to these
assessments and also conduct some summative
assessments. To ensure that judgement is consistent
across the years and stages, the teachers collaboratively
assess student work so that grades given are uniform
across the school. Teachers also refer to National and
State collections of student work samples at various
grades and compare our students work with those so
that we are more confident that the grades awarded to
our students in reports are reliable and reflect grades

across the country. We also review critically our
assessment tasks to ensure they are authentic and
enable children to achieve the full range in the grading
systems.
Grading in Australia is A-E with C being a sound grade.
Parents who were educated in systems where getting
and A or B was considered good and a C was not, need to
rethink to the national standards used in all schools
across the country. It should be rare to achieve an A as
that is a clear outstanding in all areas assessed. An A
would mean proficiency and would mean that only about
10% of students in the nation would receive this - not
10% of the school. We do have such high achievers in our
school but my message is you should celebrate the C.
Parents are always welcome to make an appointment
with your child's teacher to discuss any aspect of their
development and achievement and this includes
assessments.
Reports will go home at the end of term.
CONGRATULATIONS
Four students have finished equal first in the Newcastle
Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition,
the only time a quartet has shared the top prize.
Vashisht A and Josh R from New Lambton South Public,
George Mc from Kotara South Public and Theodore B
from Lakes Grammar School have been named the
highest ranked Hunter/Central Coast year 6 students in
the 35th annual competition. Well done.

Our two aerobics teams performed brilliantly at last
weekend’s Spring Challenge; walking away with silver
and bronze medals.
I couldn’t have been more proud of our girls and the way
they represented our school.
The competition took place at Hunter School of
Performing Arts, with our girls competing in the Stage
two section. Big congratulations to Charli Godfrey, Lily
Olney, Ella Squires, Jessica Gilmour, Jodi Manning,
Charlie O’Connor, Lexie Vanzanden, Yenny Jung, Rachael
Kershaw, Saraya Diaz, Sarah Yang, Courtney Daniels,
Emily Martin and Erin Hartley.
A huge thankyou also goes out to Kylie Evans who does
an outstanding job of organising leotards, stockings,
socks, and hair. The girls looked amazing! A big thank you
to parents, for giving up their Saturday to bring the girls
to this competition.

CANTEEN NEWS
Fruit break this week includes grape cups, red and green
apples, watermelon and oranges. As the weather is now
heating up frozen oranges and frozen pineapple will also
be available at this time.

COMPUTER ROOM NEWS
Last week Stage 2 made amazing online Budd:e robots
to show how much they understood cybersafety. To
get a background for their robots, an e-safety survey is
then done at home. The aim of the survey is to
encourage families to discuss e-safety. The online
program is provided by the Office of the e-Safety
Commissioner.... feel free to try the demo option to see
how you go!
Stage 2 please bring in a USB to save your files to this
week - remember USB's should be new or only have
content that has already been saved at school. No
games, music or inappropriate content!
Stage 1 have been learning to email! This week they will
be sending and replying to an email. (For safety, the
students are only allowed to email other students in
the class).
World Education Games Awards will given at the whole
school assembly tomorrow. The award is given to the
student who has achieved the highest overall score
across Maths, Literacy and Science in each year.
Congratulations to all those who participated!

BOOK FAIR, BOOK CLUB AND LIBRARY NEWS
Issue 8 catalogues have been sent home and they are
due back in by Monday 16th November.
Our school Book Fair will commence on Monday 23rd
November and conclude on Thursday 26th November.
The Book Fair and Book Club are great opportunities for
quality Christmas presents at bargain prices. Look
forward to seeing you at the Book Fair.
The last day for borrowing is Friday 20th November.

1M NEWS
Snakes or spiders, Brothers or sisters. Which would you
prefer? The children in 1M have been learning about
persuasive texts this term and I have included some of
their fantastic pieces of writing below.
Would you be scared of a big hairy spider crawling in
your bed? Snakes are better than spiders because
spiders are disgusting and scary.
Snakes can survive longer.
Snakes can hunt more food by slithering under bushes.
Spiders aren’t as strong as snakes. They are a lot
smaller and their legs are delicate.

Would you ask your brother to dance with you? NO
WAY!!! Boys don’t wear tutus but sisters on the other
hand are great dancers. This is one of the reasons why I
believe sisters are better than brothers.

Stop! Stop! Give it back and get out of my room! Stop
hurting me or I’ll tell on you…..Mum!!!! SLAM!! I hate
my brother. I really really want a sister. They are the
best. They play with you, they are not as bossy as
brothers and they help you when you are feeling sad.

Below are some pictures of the students working in
Literacy Groups. In this week’s rotations we are
learning about compound words and homophones.
We have started our Three Little Pigs unit. We looked at
some different versions of the story and analysed why
the houses were blown down so easily. We even came
up with some different ideas to improve the houses.
Next we began our ‘indestructible house’ project. We
worked in groups to draw a diagram of a house we
could make using only a set of materials given. These
included paddle-pop sticks, foil, cardboard, straws, pipe
cleaners and tape. We will be commencing the building
phase this week and I can’t wait to see what our class
comes up with.
2D NEWS
2D have been very busy little beavers over the last 5
weeks. In writing all students have been learning how to
be persuasive using powerful and strong words to
convince the audience on a point of view. In pairs, the
students have constructed an exposition using a very
engaging persuasive statement followed by three
arguments providing evidence and a conclusion on the
topic - All children should play sport. All pieces of writing
were AMAZING!!
In Maths 2D have been doing mini class challenges to
practise their knowledge of number. As the students’
skills improved, the class had fun competing in a
challenge called Quiz It using the iMaths investigation
program. In teams of two they had to answer 3 questions
in a minute. The challenge took a couple of days to
complete and most of the students scored very highly.
Congratulations!!
Also 2D have been working on a Problem Based Learning
Project based on the Three Little Pigs.
The problem was to build an indestructible house out of
a set list of materials using a budget of $60. In pairs they
had to design their own house and work out what type of
construction material they would like to use such as card
board, masking tape, straws, pipe cleaners, foil etc.
Upon completion of the houses, each house was tested
by the big bad wolf in the form of a hair dryer. All
students had so much fun acting out as the little pigs and
Mrs Drew was the big bad wolf. Some houses blew down
and others did not. This has created a lot of discussion as
to why this happened as some houses designs were
stronger than other houses. This has been a wonderful
opportunity to think and reason.
At the moment we are creating Persuasive Posters to sell
our Indestructible house.
All of year 2 had a GREAT day at swimming school
yesterday. Woo Hoo!!
3N NEWS
5/6O NEWS
3N have been busily working on researching the First
Fleet and the infrastructure needed to be able to
survive the new colony. We have looked at the
conditions and standards of living in Great Britain and
researched the reasons that convicts were sent to
Australia in the first place.
Students have created marvellous pieces for homework
assessment.
Remember that your next lot of homework is due next
Monday – Week 7.
Our Stage 2 Party Day has been organised for The
Forum Aquatic Centre at Newcastle University. Please
have payment and permission notes in to the office as
soon as possible.
Today sees the first day of Stage 2 learning how to play
cricket. We are fortunate enough to have clinics
available to Stage 2 students being funded for us. It will
be fabulous to have professional training in the game
over the next four weeks.
This term 5/6O have been researching a country. They
now have the task of creating their own country.
Designing flags, writing National Anthems, creating
wildlife, imports and exports, location and important
information.
We are also working in groups to create a business, one
which Clancwald Inc will provide 1 million dollars to a
business plan in which students are creating. This relates
to budgeting in maths and gives a great sense of group
work and leadership roles. Further in maths we have
been studying fractions and decimals, time and are about
to move onto chance and data.
We have been creating pop art with our Coke art works
and diagonal strips. We have also been learning about
clay work and sculpting things out of air drying clay.
Miss. Clarke is busily marking assessment tasks that all
students in 3N have been completing. We have
completed mathematics, spelling, reading and writing
assessments so far. All students have done their best in
every aspect and are to be commended on their efforts.
With this beautiful weather that we are currently
experiencing, don’t forget to SLIP, SLOP, SLAP and
remember that your NAME needs to be on all of your
belongings so that they can be returned to you if they
become misplaced! Hats are NOT OPTIONAL at school.
They need to be in your bag every morning so that you
can get out in the playground and enjoy playtime at
lunch and recess time.

We are pleased to announce that we have

The Minister for Transport and Infrastructure
and the Minister for Education will announce
the launch of the new School Opal card on
Thursday 29 October.
The School Opal card will officially launch its
new online application for relevant parents
and students travelling in the Opal public
transport region on Monday 2 November.

Just like current paper travel passes, the
School Opal card gives eligible students free
travel to and from school on school days.
However, the School Opal card makes travel
simpler, because now students don’t need
multiple application forms and passes if they
use different transport operators within the
Opal network.
Students with school travel passes this year
will not need to apply for a School Opal card
unless they are changing schools, campus,
their home address or moving from year 2 to
3 or year 6 to 7.
Those students who do not need to apply will
have a School Opal card sent to your school
for the beginning of the first term in 2016.
