DUTCHESS COUNTY
Outdoor Ambassadors
FROM MAJESTIC MOUNTAINS, LAKES AND TOWNS to pastoral farmlands and trails,
the gift of nature is never far away in Dutchess County. A wealth of outdoor activities
makes it perfect for nature lovers: nine formal gardens; 23 major parks; six multiple-use
areas with woods, fields and ponds; and three paved rail trails. Dutchess County's
foremost outdoor enthusiasts explain what they love about the area's natural wonders.
As an extreme sport
enthusiast, my passion
for the outdoors comes
with the territory. I love
being in the fresh air
under a blue sky,
standing on green grass
(or in lots of snow). In
today’s world, most of us
are indoors all the time.
I’m thankful to have
grown up knowing the
value and importance of
experiencing the
outdoors. From breathtaking views to the
abundance of wildlife,
there’s no better place to
be than Dutchess
County!
—Carolyn Beisiegel,
proprietor, Big Bear
Ziplines, Inc
My favorite hike is Mt. Beacon. You leave the hustle and bustle
of Main Street and feel like you’re a world away in minutes. We
hike it all year long, day and night. There’s nothing like hiking up
to watch the sunset and then catching the view of Beacon and
Newburgh as night falls. On a clear night you’d swear the river
was a mirror, the way it reflects the city lights.
Kayaking along the Hudson is amazing. To sit in the middle
of the river with Bannerman’s Castle in front, and Breakneck and
Storm King Mountains dropping to the river banks in the
background, it takes your breath away. You can spend hours
traveling north, but come here and you’ll spend your time hiking
and kayaking instead. Every Wednesday summer evening, we
lead a sunset paddle to Denning’s Point, and after four years, I
still look forward to it because you always see something new.
—Katy Bell Behney, Mountain Tops Outfitters
Whether walking through the woods or along the Hudson River, or
both at the same time, Dutchess County trails are food for the
soul. Sometimes I find a walk, a stroll, a run, a long connected
pathway or simply a spot to stop and gaze at the spectacular
scenery around me. Try Mills-Norrie Park at sunset, or the Walkway
Over the Hudson at noon. Both are bound to delight everyone!
Run or cross-country ski through Baird Park and hike through the
Hudson Highlands; there are trails for every taste and ability - and
I love them all.
—Linda Cooper, regional director, New York State Office of
Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation

The Mid-Hudson Valley is a Hiker’s Paradise: miles of marked and
maintained hiking trails; scores of mountains and hills; acres of
park land, farms, waterfalls, marshes, and wetlands. Dutchess has
places from A (Appalachian Trail and the Audubon Society’s
Buttercup Farm) to (almost) Z! Well, to W, for Walkway Over the
Hudson HSP, Wilcox Park, Wappingers Greenway Trail,
Wethersfield Gardens, and the World Peace Sanctuary!
Explore extensive grounds and trails at six historic Great
Estates. Hike up three fire towers and you’ll be rewarded with
terrific views. Discover our DEP lands and six DEC Multiple Use
Areas. Ramble in nine gardens and four vineyards. From casual
stroller to serious peak bagger, we’ve got it all!
—Ralph Ferrusi, outdoors columnist, Poughkeepsie Journal
I’ve led adventure programs
all over the world, from
Hawaiian beaches to the
California Sierras, to Italy’s
Mediterranean Sea, but
there’s no place like home!
Born and raised in the
Hudson Valley and raising my
own family here, I know why
the world fell in love with the
Hudson River School of Art.
Sublime landscapes, pastoral
valleys, diverse cultures, all
held together by the mighty
Hudson River. We are
America’s First River, alive
with ecology, economy and
culture like nowhere else! Join me in canoeing, kayaking, hiking,
climbing, fishing, and tasting our way through Dutchess County!
—Jeff Rumpf, executive director, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater
Over the years, I’ve cycled all over the country, but the
beautiful scenery and historic sites of Dutchess County make it
number one on my list. With the recent opening of the familyfriendly, traffic-free Dutchess Rail Trail and Walkway Over the
Hudson Historic State Park, Dutchess County is fast becoming
the bicycling mecca of the United States. Come ride with me!
—Fred Schaefer, Dutchess & Beyond Bicycle Club
We have a diverse range of paddling environments, all close by.
To the west, 55 miles of Hudson River, a freshwater tidal river
providing an always-changing experience. On the east, we’re
bordered by the Housatonic River, a Class IV whitewater
playground for those that dare it. Bounded by these major river
systems are a dozen lakes and waterways to explore and enjoy.
Some mornings I’ll take the hound and coffee out to the
Hudson to simply drift amongst the swans and watch the world
wake up. Wildlife and scenery abound; foxes, otter, deer,
beaver, bald eagles and coyote regard you as a log out on the
water. So try something new that’s been here all along. See you
on the water!
—Marshall Seddon, proprietor, The River Connection, Inc.
Enjoying the Hudson River and beautiful places along its shores
is my passion. I’ve had outdoor adventures in amazing places
worldwide—and what we’ve got here is extraordinary.
Astonishing natural splendor celebrated by writers and artists.
In the backyard of New York City, stunning wildlife from bald
eagles soaring in the skies to tiny salamanders adding a splash
of color to the forest floor. This grandeur is available against
the backdrop of places that tell the history of our nation.
When I’m kayaking, I’m part of the river, feeling its energy,
immersed in its power to inspire and energize. Kayak solo or with
a group. Don’t have one? Contact an outfitter for a rental or
guided tour. Get out and discover Dutchess—including some
Scenic Hudson parks. We’ve got adventures you’re going to love.

Fish and Gam e
Whether you’re looking for trophy-class
fish or you just want to experience the
tranquillity of a secluded trout stream,
Dutchess County has it all. The Hudson
River is quickly becoming the destination
point for anglers from around the globe.
Our many stocked streams and lakes have
miles of public access available, and
hunters and water fowlers can challenge
themselves at one of our many multiple
use areas. For sporting clays, trap and
skeet shooters, Dutchess County is a top
Northeast destination, with four shooting
clubs and preserves open to the public.
There are numerous spots for catching trout,
bass, pickerel and perch, as well as places
for dip-netting smelt, alewives and blueback
herring. The beautiful Hudson itself is an
ideal setting for numerous species, including
largemouth and smallmouth bass, striped
bass, brown bullhead, carp, white catfish
and American shad.
Dutchess County is one of the top two
counties in the Southern Region of New
York State for deer hunting, with a special
archery season for deer spanning a total of
about six weeks. In designated hunting
areas you can also find pheasant, grouse,
woodcock, squirrel, cotton-tail rabbit,
raccoon and waterfowl.
Be sure to contact the New York State
Department of Environmental Conservation
in New Paltz for specific fishing and
hunting regulations and other relevant
information before your planned visit.
