The ThyssenKrupp Quarter embodies the conference’s theme of “The Intelligent City”:
It stimulates movement, encourages the exchange of knowledge, and highlights opportunities for using innovative materials and technology. The quarter relies on the use of geothermal energy and a unique sun protection
system has been applied to the glass facades. The primary energy requirements for the buildings are below
legal specifications.

Krupp Park, Essen – one of the largest inner-city
revitalization projects
The “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation funded the green areas in
Krupp Park, which resulted in the creation of a leisure and
recreational landscape. The brown-field site on which the
Krupp cast iron works used to stand was unsuitable for use by
the local people for nearly 200 years. The park not only adds an
ecological improvement to the city, but also provides an urban
planning link between the suburb of Altendorf and downtown
Essen.

The most vibrant memorial city
remembering – Raising awareness – Fostering identity
E.ON
Award ceremony 2014
The Foundation Award
Each year the “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation awards a prize to projects in a certain category. These
projects display a form of “best practice” in a very special way, thus making them an example for others to
follow. In the spirit of this competition, the foundation calls upon cities and communities throughout Europe
to submit their projects. An expert jury then evaluates the applications and selects a winner. In the past,
awards and recognitions have been given, for example, to particularly innovative and successful concepts
for museums, inner city housing, sporting facilities, as well as playgrounds and recreational spaces.
This year, the ceremony will be held at E.ON in Essen.
The award ceremony in Berlin-Tempelhof 2013
Particularly praiseworthy projects are those that contribute to the commemorative culture of their city and
community. The projects should foster identity through
remembrance and provide stimulating impulses for
urban development. Here, the focus is on how a city’s
history is used and dealt with, especially when it comes
to buildings, spaces, historical events, and people.
Memorial projects should make both residents and visitors consciously aware of the city’s history. The projects
should stand out thanks to special creativity and the
involvement of local residents.
