Dresden’s turning – make it your turn
Dresden, 11 November 2009 – The countdown has started – on January 15th, 2010, the most
beautiful night of the year is being staged for the fifth time and it will be Dresden’s turn to do the
turning. Once again more than 2000 guests inside the opera and thousands of visitors on Theatre
Square can look forward to a feast of world class entertainment. „It is its unique program that
makes SemperOperaball so truly special; a festive event of classical entertainment presented both
inside the opera and at SemperOpenairball on Theatre Square in front of the opera, “ emphasizes

„Great Couples“ – that is the motto of the fifth SemperOperaball. Great couples have always been
part and parcel of great operas. Great couples such as Tristan and Isolde or Leonore and
Florestan. However, the theme of great couples goes far beyond operas: with its fifth staging
SemperOperaball celebrates its first small anniversary in the year when Germany celebrates the
20th anniversary of unification and Dresden celebrates the 25th anniversary of its Semperopera
being reopened. The elements that belong together come together. Great couples and great
combinations are highlighted: Semperopera and Dresden, Dresden and Saxony, East and West or
Saxony and Germany, Germany and Europe.
„Great couples do not only take centre stage in the program and at the ball, they are also the main
focus of SemperOpenairball. We are looking for the most beautiful and the most touching and
most extraordinary stories of great couples for the day of SemperOperaball. Couples of all ages
should apply with their story or idea and a picture until 08 January 2010 to
[email protected]. On the eve of the ball the winning couples are invited to join
the festive opening program. They will take part in the opening dance and spend the night
celebrating in the opera,“ says Hans-Joachim Frey.
For the first time ever and only in the anniversary year the young debutante couples (or great
couples) will dance the opening waltz accompanied by the sounds of Sächsische Staatskapelle
Dresden. They will also dance – this is yet another premiere – the Emperor Waltz by Johann
Strauss the son.
Regarding this matter SemperOperaball is also looking for choirs to join audiences at
SemperOpenairball in front of the opera in singing the newly created Dresden anthem.
The motto is „Dresden dreht sich einmal im Jahr – Dresden dreht sich, Träume sind wahr, Dresden
dreht sich – dreh Dich doch mit, rund um die Oper im Walzerschritt“. („Dresden turns once a year
– Dresden’s turning, dreams are real – make it your turn, waltz along - around the opera, all night
long“.)
„ In 2010 as in previous years, guests inside and in front of the opera can look forward to
outstanding performances by great artists. Highlights include special guest Peter Kraus and Band,
a famous great couple on the piano i.e. the four-handed pianists Katia and Marielle Labequè as
well as a great opera couple: Klaus Florian Vogt und Camilla Nylund and of course Sächsische
Staatskapelle Dresden, Staatsopernchor of Semperopera, the Dresden Semperopera Ballet and the
German Television Ballet of MDR TV will all contribute to the evening’s outstanding entertainment.
The opening program will be hosted by yet another great couple who appear together for the
very first time: Miriam Pielhau und Gunther Emmerlich. While Gunther Emmerlich hosts
SemperOperaball for the fifth time, Mrs Piehlai is a very special choice indeed. Semper Operaball
e.V. has always sought exciting combinations and interesting personal stories when chosing the
female hosts of SemperOperaball.
SemperOpenairball
Since the grand resuming of SemperOperaball in 2006 SemperOpenairball has been a unique and
spcial feature of the most beautiful night of the year. Dresden turns and waltzes underneath a
starry sky – thousands of people from Dresden and their guests follow the organizers’ invitation
every year and join a celebration on Theatre Square which has become a real audience magnet.
SemperOperaball and SemperOpenairball are opened with a light show designed by Tom Roeder
on Theatre Square. Beethoven’s „Freude schöner Götterfunken“ („ the divine spark that is joy“) will
be heard and sparks will illuminate the great couples all the guests and indeed the entire Theatre
Square.
The end of the opening program will be marked by spectacular fireworks above the magnificent
setting that is Semperopera. Giant wheels will be lit and turned thus demonstrating the motto
„Dresden’s turning“ one more time.
The entire opening program of Semper Opera 2010 will be broadcast live on MDR Television from
9 pm until 10.30 pmFurthermore Semper Operaball e.V. will in 2010 as in previous years award three medals of Saxon
Gratitude to three outstanding personalities. Just before midnight the annual charity partner will
be introduced, thus illstrating the chartable spirit of SemperOpearaball. Both charity partner and
the recipients of the awards will be announced shortly.
The Hosts
Miriam Pielhau
Her first major success came when she was hosting the live show NBC GIGA on NBC Europe. Aged
only 26 she became editor in chief of the channel and her work was awarded the prestigeous
Grimme Online Award. She became known to a wider audience when she hosted the program
„taff“ on Pro7 and the breakfast show „Weck Up“ on SAT 1 as well as the 8th and the 9th series of
„Big Brother“ on RTL2.
Miriam Pielhau has been married to the Vivid-singer Thomas Hahnreich since 2003. When South
East Asia was hit by the tsunami catastrophe in 2004, the couple were spending their Christmas
vacation in the Thai resort of Khao Lak. They survived because they had been on a diving
excursion. Since then they have been supporting local rebuilding and reconstruction initiatives esp.
the Beluga School for Life project in Khao Lak. Its aim is to offer orphans a future and an
upbringing.
In spring 2008 Miriam Pielhau was diagnosed with breastcancer. Shortly thereafter she underwent
surgery and chemotherapy. In her book „Fremdkörper“ (Alien Parts) she describes her fight with
cancer. The best-selling book was published on 26 August 2009 by mvg-Verlag, Munich.
Gunther Emmerlich
Der in Thüringen geborene Bass machte zunächst in Erfurt einen Abschluss als Bauingenieur,
wandte sich dann der Musik zu und studierte von 1967 bis 1972 an der Musikhochschule Franz
Liszt in Weimar Operngesang. Von 1972 bis 1992 gehörte er dem Ensemble der Dresdner Oper an.
Emmerlich ist Moderator und Gast zahlreicher deutscher Unterhaltungssendungen, wie
beispielsweise der Sendung „Zauberhafte Heimat“, die er jahrelang moderierte. Seit 2006
moderiert er den SemperOpernball in der Semperoper in Dresden. Er ist Mitglied der SemperHouse-Band, die überwiegend aus Musikern der Staatskapelle Dresden besteht und sich dem Jazz
widmet.
Im Jahr 2007 veröffentlichte er sein Buch „Ich wollte mich mal ausreden lassen“, dem 2010 ein
zweites folgen wird. Gunther Emmerlich ist Botschafter der Carreras Leukämie-Stiftung. Er wurde
1990 mit dem Bambi und 1997 mit dem Bundesverdienstkreuz ausgezeichnet.
Die Künstler
Stargast Peter Kraus
nahm schon während seiner Schulzeit Gesangsunterricht, belegte Schauspiel- und Stepkurse und
begann seine Karriere als Schauspieler Mitte der 50er Jahre mit der Rolle des Johnny in „Das
fliegende Klassenzimmer“ (1954) nach dem gleichnamigen Buch von Erich Kästner.
Peter Kraus wurde bald zu einem der populärsten deutschsprachigen Rock'n'Roll-Sänger und TeenIdole. In den ersten vier Jahren nach seinem Debüt brachte Kraus sechsunddreißig Schlager
heraus und verkaufte damals bereits über 12 Millionen Schallplatten. Als der „nette Junge von
nebenan“ sang er auch mit seinem Pendant, dem weiblichen Teenageridol Conny Froboess in
Schlagerfilmen wie 1958 in „Wenn die Conny mit dem Peter“ oder 1960 in „Conny und Peter
machen Musik“. Beide avancierten bei Deutschlands Teenagern zu den meistgeliebten
Leinwandstars der späten Fünfziger.
Peter Kraus veröffentlichte auch einige Titel zusammen mit Jörg Maria Berg unter dem Pseudonym
James Brothers. Zudem sang er noch zusammen mit Connie Francis, Lill-Babs, Danny Mann, Alice
und Ellen Kessler, Gus Backus sowie Gina Dobra.
Später rückte die Karriere als Schauspieler in Film und Fernsehen in den Vordergrund. Doch auch
die Musik spielte weiterhin eine wichtige Rolle in Peter Kraus’ Leben. Dem veränderten
Musikgeschmack angepasst, profilierte er sich beim Übergang zu den Sechzigern als Deutschlands
„Kuschelsänger“ Nummer 1.
Auch als Drehbuchautor und Plattenproduzent trat der Entertainer in Erscheinung, hatte eine
eigene TV-Show („Herzlichst, Ihr Peter Kraus“), die vierzehnmal ausgestrahlt wurde und in der er
dem Fernsehpublikum ausländische Stars vorstellte. 1970 war Kraus unter anderem achtzehn
Folgen lang Showmaster der TV-Unterhaltungsserie „Bäng-Bäng“. Im gleichen Jahr ist er erstmals
in der ZDF-Hitparade mit dem Schlager "Hokuspokus Fidibus" aufgetreten. Seine Auftritte in der
von seinem Vater produzierten Serie „8 x 1 nach Noten“ sowie „Hallo Peter“ waren beim Publikum
ebenfalls sehr beliebt.
Mit seiner ehemaligen Partnerin Cornelia Froboess stand er nach 26 Jahren wieder gemeinsam vor
der Kamera: Im Thriller „Der Sommer des Samurai“ von Hans-Christoph Blumenberg spielte er
1985 einen Aussteigertypen.
Im Frühsommer 2002 kam er mit einer neuen CD („Ich mach weiter“) auf den Markt und im
Herbst des gleichen Jahres begann er seine Deutschland-Tournee. Insgesamt verkaufte Peter
Kraus mehr als 17 Millionen Tonträger und erhielt unzählige Goldene Schallplatten,
Auszeichnungen und Ehrungen1990 veröffentlichte er seine Memoiren und auch als Maler wurde
er inzwischen bekannt: seine Bilder, poppige Kompositionen, die an Roy Lichtenstein erinnern,
fanden bei verschiedenen Ausstellungen in Zürich und St. Moritz große Anerkennung.

Katia und Marielle Labequè
wurden in Frankreich nahe der Spanischen Grenze geboren. Die beiden Schwestern sind ein stark
kontrastierendes, aber doch höchst kommunikatives Klavierduo. Ihr Repertoire birgt
Widersprüchliches und Überraschendes von Bach, gespielt auf Instrumenten der Zeit, bis zu
zeitgenössischen Komponisten des 21. Jahrhunderts.
Schon ihre Kindheit war von Musik erfüllt.
Katia und Marielle Labèque machen weltweit eine außergewöhnliche Karriere und konzertieren mit
den weltbesten Orchestern und den bekanntesten Dirigenten.
Das Bestreben eine Brücke zu schlagen, die alle Aspekte zeitgenössischen Schaffens verbindet ließ
sie ihr eigenes Label zu gründen, KML Recordings. Konventionen und Grenzen überschreitend,
bringt KML Recordings das Unerwartete in aussagekräftiger und künstlerischer Weise zusammen,
indem ständig Ton und Bild miteinander assoziiert wird.
Im Jahr 2005 gründeten Katia und Marielle Labèque die KML Stiftung – www.fondazionekml.com –
die sich für Recherche und Bewusstsein für das Repertoire für Klavierduos einsetzt. Eines ihrer
diesbezüglichen Projekte war ein Programm für Kinder, das im Juni 2005 unter der Patronanz des
Zukunft@BPhil-Programms der Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker stattfand. Das Projekt wurde von
Sir Simon Rattle ins Leben gerufen.
Zusätzlich zum Zukunft@BPhil Projekt erfreuten sich Katia und Marielle Labèque eines großen
Erfolges als sie mit den Berliner Philharmonikern unter der Leitung von Sir Simon Rattle bei ihrem
abschließenden Gala Konzert im Juni 2005 auf der Waldbühne Berlin mit einer RekordBesucherzahl von 33 000 Zuhörern spielten. Dieses Konzert wurde weltweit im Fernsehen
übertragen.
Katia and Marielle Labèque sind “Artists in Residence” der Saison 2009/2010 am Gewandhaus zu
Leipzig. Die Residenz beginnt mit einem großen Eröffnungskonzert unter der Leitung von Markus
Stenz und dem Gewandhausorchester am 21. August 2009 bei den “Mendelssohn Festtagen 2009”,
in dem der 200. Geburtstag des Komponisten gewürdigt wird.
