Frosinone (population 48,500) is located in the Lazio r e g i o n i n c e n t ra l Italy. Mayor McNamara said the twinning creates
opportunities for young and future generations of Italian families here to visit the country and learn more about their

President’s Message / Messaggio Del Presidente
Dear Members:
The last few months have been very busy and eventful. I would like to take
this opportunity to acknowledge the success of a few events that were held at
the Club recently. The 37th annual Members’ Banquet was well attended and
enjoyed by all. The delegation from Frosinone, led by Mayor Michele Marini,
was touched by the tributes and warm wishes they received from the Club and
its members. They were equally impressed by the dedication, unity, and the
significant achievements of the Ciociaro community of Windsor and Essex
County. Similarly, the Club marked a new milestone with the successful
Twinning of the City of Frosinone and the Town of Tecumseh, which was
held on April 28th, 2009. This was a historic moment in our Club’s history
that will serve to benefit our members in many ways. This new relationship
will provide opportunities for educational, cultural, and business
development. Also it will provide future generations a formal and continuous
link to the land of their ancestors.
In addition, I would like to acknowledge the work done by the organizing
committee of the fundraising banquet for the Earthquake Victims of L’Auila,
Italy. Also, I thank all of you who participated in making it such a successful
event. The Ciociaro Club was successful in raising over $20,000 which will
be delivered directly to those in need in September 2009.
The upcoming months will also prove to be equally as entertaining. As we
enter the summer period we can look forward to the nice weather and the
extraordinary Festivals that will take place at our fabulous Club. For example,
I look forward to seeing you at the Family Picnic (August 2), the St. Onorio
Festival (July 12), the Madonna Di Canneto Festival (Aug 16), the Ciociaro
Golf Tournament (Sept. 20), and the Nostagie Ciociare Festival (Sept. 27).
These events, each of which will contain new and exciting activities for your
family, will serve to help us promote and maintain our rich cultural heritage
and offer us an opportunity to enjoy each others company.
I reserve my final thought for our newest members. It’s seems that at each
General Assembly meeting we are greeted with several new smiling faces. It
brings us all joy to see that the love and passion for this Club is vibrant and
growing. I welcome each of you to your new extended family.
I look forward to seeing all of our members at the upcoming festivals.

Cari soci:
Come gia’ saprete, durante gli ultimi mesi siamo stati molto occupati, questa
volta forse anche piu’ del solito. Sono lieto di dettagliare un po’ gli eventi che
hanno avuto luogo recentemente al nostro Club. La partecipazione al 37.mo
banchetto annuale dei soci e’ stata ancora di gran numero e molto divertente per
tutti. La delegazione di Frosinone, con a capo il Sindaco Michele Marini, e’
rimasta alquanto commossa dagli omaggi e dalla calorosa accoglienza di tutti i
componenti del Club. Sono rimasti altrettanto impressionati dall’impegno,
dall’accordo e dal successo della Comunita’ Ciociara di Windsor e d’intorni.
Similmente, il Club ha attraversato un altro importante traguardo con il
gemellaggio della citta’ di Frosinone con la citta’ di Tecumseh, il quale ebbe
luogo il 28 aprile 2009. Cio’ rappresenta un altro momento storico per il nostro
Club e i vantaggi per i nostri soci saranno immensi. Questa nuova relazione
dara’ senz’altro sviluppo a varie opportunita’, specialmente per l’istruzione, la
cultura e l’economia e sara’ un legame perpetuo, per generazioni future, alla
terra dei loro antenati. Ulteriormente, e’ importante riconoscere il lavoro
esercitato da tutti i comitati organizzanti del banchetto raccolta-fondi per i
terremotati di L’Aquila. Ringrazio anche tutti voi partecipanti per avere aiutato
a fare di questo evento un gande successo. Il Club annuncia orgogliosamente
che siamo riusciti a raccogliere piu’ di $20,000.00, i quali saranno donati
personalmente il prossimo settembre ai piu’ bisognosi di L’Aquila.
Avvicinandoci al colmo dell’estate, con l’arrivare delle varie feste, come
sempre il nostro Club offrira’ tanto da divertirci. St. Onorio si festeggera’ il 12
luglio; il Picnic delle Famiglie, il 2 Agosto; La Madonna di Canneto, il 16
Agosto; Torneo di Golf, il 20 settembre; Nostalgie Ciociare, il 27 settembre.
Questi eventi avranno delle nuove sorprese, e daranno a noi l’opportunita’ di
rivederci spesso, avendo così, come e’ solito, l’occasione di mantenere e
festeggiare la nostra cultura. Un mio pensiero finale va ai nuovi soci. Ogni
volta che l’Assemblea Generale si riunisce, abbiamo l’onore di vedere nuovi
visi sorridenti. Ci fa molto piacere notare che l’attaccamento al nostro Club e’
forte, vibrante e sempre in numero di aumento. Un sincero benvenuto va a tutti
coloro, i quali, sono recentemente entrati a far parte di questa nostra grande,
meravigliosa famiglia!
Spero di rivedere tutti, soci e famiglie, alle varie feste dei prossimi mesi.

Paese storico della Ciociaria: GUARCINO
Guarcino, sorta intorno all’VIII secolo a.C., era l’antica Vercenum
degli Ernici, strategicamente importante per il passaggio nella valle
dell’Aniene e nota come località ricca di acque. Pittoresco centro dei
monti Ernici, è un ideale luogo di villeggiatura, grazie anche
all’accoglienza dei suoi abitanti e ad una squisita cucina.
La cittadina, che conserva nel centro storico elementi architettonici e
decorativi tipicamente medioevali (portali, bifore e mura in pietra
viva), è circondata da un territorio di notevole rilevanza turistica: alle
sue spalle s’innalza il massiccio di Campo Catino, che ospita una
stazione sciistica tra le più frequentate nel Lazio. Nei pressi del
centro abitato si trova la fonte di Filette, le cui acque curative sono
molto apprezzate. Con i suoi 625 metri di altitudine, è un ottimo
punto di partenza per ogni tipo di escursione. Infatti, si può
camminare per ore tra faggete secolari incontrando spesso sorgenti
d’acqua e numerose grotte che si aprono nel calcare dei monti
circostanti.
Grarcino e’ sito di tante chiese, la piu’ importante il Santuario di S.
Agnello. Durante l’anno e’ ospite di tante feste: religiose, culturali,
sportive, ecc.
Just a bit older than Rome and at about 625 metres above sea level,
in ancient times Guarcino belonged to the “Ernici” tribe.
Strategically situated in the pass that leads to the Aniene Valley, it is
important for its abundance of fresh water. Panoramic centre of the
Ernici Mountains, it’s an ideal place for vacationing, thanks to its
landscape, the kindness of its people and its exquisite cuisine (very
famous is their “prosciutto”).
The town, which preserves many typically medieval architectural
finds and decorations, is surrounded by a territory of
touristic importance.
Its altitude allows almost any kind of sports activity.
Hiking for hours among its forests of centuries-old beach
trees, often encountering natural caves or many natural,
cool water fountains is an enjoyable pastime, and is very
fulfilling.
Campo Catino, very famous skiing site for the entire
region of Lazio, rises just behind Guarcino. The fountain
of “Filette”, is located near the centre of town. It is famous
for its waters, as they are believed to have healing powers
and are much appreciated by many.
Guarcino, has many churches, most notably the
“Santuario di S. Agnello” (patron saint). Also many
festivals are held through the year.

PURCHASED FINALIZED –
Club adds 16 acres of land
TERRENI –
il Club si espande di 16 acri.
(Club’s total area grows from 55 to 71 acres)
La superfice totale aumenta da 55 a 71 acri!!!
The Board of Directors are proud to announce that on
May 15, 2009 the Ciociaro Club became official owners
of the 16 acres of land adjacent to the Club (eastern
border). The final sale price was of the purchase
$450,000.
It is important to note that the Club was able to purchase
this land outright without incurring any additional debt to
finance the deal. The Club’s land area has grown from 55
acres to an impressive 71 acres.
Il Consiglio di Amministrazione e’ orgoglioso di annunciare che
precisamente il 15 maggio 2009, il Club Ciociaro ha ufficialmente
esteso la sua superfice totale di 16 acri e aggiungendo questi ai 55
gia’ in possesso, siamo ora a un totale di 71 acri. Il nuovo terreno,
situato ad est di quelli gia’ esistenti, ci e’ costato un totale di
$450,000.00 ed e’ molto importante notare che l’acquisto non ha
incorso alcuna forma di nuovo debito per il Club.
Stiamo ora progettando di offrire una serie di esibizioni, affinche’
i soci avranno l’opportunita’ di esprimere le loro opinioni a
riguardo di come sviluppare questi terreni per il futuro della nostra
splendita organizzazione. Il Consiglio e’ molto contento
dell’acquisto, specilamente per il fatto che ebbe l’appoggio
completo dall’Assemblea Generale durante la riunione di Marzo
2009. Il Club sara’ completamente in controllo di un eventuale
futuro sviluppo dei terreni e cio’ ci dara’ una vantaggiosa
possibilita’ di espandere i vari programmi, servizi e, se necessario,
un incremento di altri edifici, tutto cio’ per il beneficio dei nostri
soci.
The plan to have a series of open houses whereby the
members of the Club will have an opportunity to add
input into a master plan for future development property.
With the purchase of the land was overwhelmingly
supported by the General Assembly at the March 2009
meeting. Firstly, it will ensure that the Club will have full
control as to the future development of the land. Also, it
will allow us to expand the programs, services and
structures that we will be able to offer the members.

Miele, a member of the Club, describes his experiences as a young child
growing up in war-torn Ciociaria (Cassino).
The Ciociaro Club is proud to have been an official sponsor of this book which
succeeds to eloquently describe the trials and tribulations that many of our
members experienced during the war. These experiences now have become a
significant part of the history of the Ciociaria. The soft cover book, written in
the Italian language, is available for a cost of $15 each and will make a great gift
for one of your family members.

in Windsor. The money that they receive will go

L’Aquila Earthquake Fundraiser
Ladies Bocciofila
The women organized a Hawaiian Night on May 1st. We had a very
good turnout and a good time was had by all. We have started our
summer tournament with 9 teams and hopefully everyone will have
fun. Anyone interested in joining our group, call Anna Lecce 7351430 or Ciociaro Club 737-6153.
Also thank you to all our sponsors and people who donated to our
group functions, and to the Ciociaro Club kitchen and office staff.
Men’s Bocciofila
At the opening of Caboto Park on May 18, our players did very well.
The team of Enrico and Tony placed 1st, Emilio and Georgio came
in 2nd, and Mario and Mike Vettese placed 8th and Nazzareno and
Frank placed 9th. Congratulations to all. Keep up the good work!
We are presently working outside on the bocce courts to make a
couple of alleys per “giocare alla paesana”. Hopefully we will finish
them soon for all members to enjoy.

Student Exchange Opportunity
We have been contacted by the Lazio Federation of Ontario regarding the student exchange
trip that is sponsored by the Region of Lazio each summer. We have been informed that the
Ciociaro Club will be awarded one spot for three weeks in Italy (costs for flights and
accommodations to be covered by the Region of Lazio). Interested applicants must be
members of the Ciociaro Club and be full time students between the ages of 18-29. In order
to be considered, interested individuals must submit a two page essay entitled “The
significance of the Ciociaro Club” to the office no later than July 15, 2009. For more

Opportunità Scambio Di Studenti
La Federazione Laziale dell’Ontario ha mandato un comunicato riguardante lo scambio di
studenti quest’estate patrocinato dalla Regione del Lazio. Siamo stati informati che il nostro
Ciociaro Club avra’ il posto per uno studente per un viaggio in Italia per tre settimane. Il
costo del viaggio aereo e alloggio verra’ pagato dalla Regione Lazio. Gli studenti interessati
devono essere membri del Club di eta’ tra 18 anni e 29 anni, e devono frequentare la scuola
regolarmente per tutto I’anno scolastico. Per essere considerato, lo studente deve
consegnare all’ufficio del Ciociaro Club un saggio col titolo “Il Significato del Ciociaro
Club”, non piu tardi del 15 luglio 2009. Per ulteriori informazioni telefonate l’ufficio del

Classi serali d'italiano saranno disponibili per adulti
e studenti delle scuole secondarie. Classi al primo e
secondo livello saranno offerte. I corsi saranno
offerti una sera la settimana 7pm-9pm al Club
Ciociaro. Le classi inizieranno alla fine di giugno
2009. Se siete interessati, chiamate il Club Ciociaro

Italian Classes
Night courses will be available for adults and high
school students beginning at the end of June 2009.
A level 1 course will be offered as well as level 2
for students that have already completed the first
level. Courses will be offered once a week, 7pm9pm at the Ciociaro Club. If interested, please call

Giugno e luglio in Ciociaria
June and July in Ciociaria
Durante i mesi di giugno e luglio la campagna ciociara ha tanto da offrire.
La piu’ tradizionale e forse la piu’ antica nella storia e’ la raccolta del
frumento, dal quale si produce del buon pane, ciambelle, pasta all’uovo,
lasagne, gnocchi e tanti altri prodotti. La maturazione dei primi
gustosissimi fichi, e’ un altro evento molto atteso dai cittadini. Poi viene
la raccolta continua della varia frutta e ortaggi freschi che la campagna
offre.
Il turista si divertira’ attendendo le varie feste, che prima o poi, tutti i
paesi esibiranno. Tanti di questi comuni
invitano artisti al livello nazionale e
internazionale, come cantanti, comici,
gruppi folkloristici, ecc., per l’intrattenimento dei partecipanti.
E’ molto comune, in Ciociaria, sedersi la
sera su una collina abbastanza elevata, ove
si puo’ osservare una buona parte della provincia e gustarsi da lontano i
vari fuochi artificiali offerti da codesti paesi festeggianti; e’ un vero
spettacolo sotto il cielo stellato ciociaro.
There is a lot to choose from the Ciociaro countryside during the
months of June and July. Perhaps the
most traditional and most historical is
the wheat harvest. Bread, “ciambelle”,
“gnocchi”, “pasta all’uovo”, “lasagne”
and other goodies, are made from the
processing of wheat. The ripening and
the tasting of the first figs, is another
event long-awaited by the Ciociaro People. All this is followed by
the harvesting of other various fresh fruits and vegetables the fields
have to offer.
Tourists will enjoy themselves by attending the various festivals
offered by the different cities and towns. Many of these
municipalities invite famous artists, such as singers, comedians,
folkloristic groups, etc., for the entertainment of the attendants.
It’s very common in Ciociaria to sit on top of a hill where a vast
area is visible and enjoy the various fireworks exhibited during
these festivals; it’s a real show under the starry “Ciociaro” nights.
Tecumseh Delegation to visit Frosinone Sept. 11, 2009
We are pleased to announce that the City of Frosinone will be
hosting a delegation from the Town of Tecumseh (including
representatives from the Ciociaro Club) on September 9-11, 2009.
This visit will serve to finalize the formal twining process that began
on April 28, 2009 when Mayor Gary McNamara (Tecumseh) and
Mayor Michele Marini (Frosinone) signed a formal twinning
proclamation at Tecumseh Town Hall. The Tecumseh/Ciociaro Club
delegation will be looking to develop business, cultural, and
educational opportunities for the benefit of the Club, and the
residents of Tecumseh /Essex County. Members that find
themselves on vacation in Ciociaria are invited to attend the
ceremony on Sun. Sept. 11, 2009 at 7pm – Location: Frosinone Town
Hall – Piazza VI Dicembre

Siamo lieti di annunciare che la Citta’ di Frosinone, durante il periodo 910-11 settembre 2009, ospitera’ una delegazione proveniente dalla Citta’
di Tecumseh (con dei rappresentanti del Ciociaro Club). Questa visita
servira’ a finalizzare il processo del gemellaggio ufficiale che inizio’ il 29
aprile 2009, quando il Sindaco Gary McNamara (Tecumseh) e il Sindaco
Michele Marini (Frosinone), formalizzarono la proclamazione nella Sala
Comunale di Tecumseh. La delegazione Tecumseh/Ciociaro Club avra’
l’interesse di pubblicizzare che varie opportunita’ di attivita’
commerciali, culturali ed istruttive possano fiorire per l’interesse del
Club e di tutti i residenti di Tecumseh e della Contea di Essex. I soci che
dovessero trovarsi in Ciociaria, sono invitati ad attendere la cerimonia,
Domenica 11 Settembre 2009, alle ore 19,00 (Sede Comunale Frosinone Piazza VI Dicembre).

honoured to have had their delegation with us this year. A

CIOCIARIA: A HERITAGE OF WHICH YOU SHOULD BE PROUD!
Marco Vipsanio Agrippa (63 B.C. – 12 B.C.)
Nato ad Arpino, generale e uomo politico romano,
oratore, amico intimo di Ottaviano, Agrippa era di
modeste origini. Come governatore in Gallia, Agrippa
domo’ gli Aquitani e pacifico’ i Germani. Le sue doti
militari si rivelarono magnificamente quando con
energia e rapidita’ seppe dare a Roma una base
navale con la costruzione del Portus Julius e una
poderosa flotta. Al suo comando sconfisse Sesto
Pompeo e anniento’ Antonio e Cleopatra. Fu per tre
volte console ma non meno degna fu la sua opera di
magistrato civile. Nel 33 a.C. fu eletto edile e si diede
subito da fare costruendo bagni, progettando giardini,
teatri, portici, terme lussuose e monumenti che
diedero alla citta’ un volto imperiale. Sue opere
furono il Porticus Vipsaniae contenente la prima carta
geografica mondiale, il pons Agrippae, la Basilica
Neptuni e, infine, il Pantheon di Adriano. Inoltre diede uno stimolo alla pubblica
esibizione delle opere d’arte. L’imperatore Augusto riconoscendo i grandi servizi di
Agrippa, piu’ tardi lo vanto’ dicendo che “egli aveva trovato la città di mattone ma
l’aveva lasciata di marmo.
Born in Arpino, general, Roman politician, orator and best friend of Octavian,
Agrippa was of modest origins. As governor of Gallia, he subdued the Aquitans and
pacified the Germans. His military skills were revealed when he gave Rome a naval
base and a strong fleet. At its command he defeated Pompeous and annihilated
Anthony and Cleopatra. He was elected counsel three times and also very important
was his contribution as a civil magistrate. In 33 B.C. he was elected as a building
surveyor and swiftly got into action with the construction of baths, beautiful gardens,
theatres, arcades, luxurious thermal baths, and various monuments, all of which gave
the city an Imperial look. His major contributions were the “Porticus Vipsaniae”, site
of the first world map, the pons Agrippae, the Basilica Neptuni and the Pantheon of
Adriano. Marco also gave stimulus to the public exhibition of art works. Emperor
Augustus recognizing the huge services offered by Agrippa, later exalted him by
saying “he found a city of bricks but left it a city of marble.

PIZZA CON I TANNI
PIZZA WITH “TANNI”
pasta di pane, tanni
a crudo, tanni, olio,
aglio, sale, peperoncino, uovo
Cuocere a crudo i
tanni (particolare
qualità di broccoletti di rapa) in un tegame
con olio, aglio, sale e pochissima acqua. Se
si desidera si può aggiungere una punta di
peperoncino. Stendere una sfoglia sottile di
pasta di pane (acqua, farina, sale, lievito di
birra) in una teglia oliata e infarinata,
lasciando alti i bordi. Riempire con i tanni
cotti a crudo. Ricoprire con un’altra
sfoglia. Pennelare con il rosso dell’uovo e
infornare.
Bread dough, “tanni” vegetables, 1 egg
yolk, salt, oil
In an oiled and floured baking tin, roll the
dough (water, flour, salt, beer yeast) until
paper thin. Stuff with the “tanni” cooked
without browning. Cover with another
sheet of dough. Paint with the yolk and
bake.
