Setup Guide
Reason and the Digital 328
This Setup Guide is for interfacing Propellerheads’ Reason with the Digital 328 digital mixer.
This guide assumes that you have a working knowledge of your computer platform and a
familiarity with Reason and the Digital 328.
The procedure will show the user how to integrate the Digital 328 MIDI Controller Bank as
a limited control surface for all devices within Reason.
Macintosh users must have OMS 2.38 installed and active to achieve results outlined
in this guide.
The Digital 328 MIDI Controller Bank allows the definition of all 16 faders, 16 encoders and 32
mute and solo switches as physical MIDI controllers. For this reason (no pun intended), the 328
is as flexible as any application will allow, yet there are often limitations imposed by third-party
software.
The 328 uses MIDI Continuous Controller parameters to control devices within REASON, and the
328 is perfectly suited for this task. Utilizing the 328 together with Reason is simply amazing –
many benefits will be realized with this system.
Reason Setup
Launch Reason and enter the PREFERENCES Dialogue.
Under PREFERENCES, select MIDI.
Enable the 328 as an External controller.
Close the PREFERENCES window and return to the main view.
Under the MIDI input section, configure Reason as follows:

Failure to configure reason in this manner will render the provided
Digital 328 MIDI Controller Presets inactive.
Digital 328 Setup
The 328 Controller presets need to be dumped into the 328 via MIDI SYSEX.
The provided Controller Preset files are in Standard MIDI File format, so any computer sequencer
should suffice. Consult your sequencer manual for advice on how to open a Standard MIDI File.
Once the SMF file is opened in your sequencer, assign the output of the track to the Digital 328.
On the 328, go to MENU/MIDI DUMP IN – hit ENTER. The 328 will wait for the data.
The first set of data (measure 4) in the Standard MIDI File is all 6 Controller presets. When the
328 receives this data, it will overwrite any existing controller presets in locations 1
through 6.
The next 6 sets of data (measures 7 through 23) contain the individual presets, in case you want
to reassign the location number (without erasing existing 328 data). Standard MIDI File Markers
have been used to indicate the data types.
Press PLAY on your sequencer to begin the data transmission.

Presets and The Digital 328 MIDI Controller Bank
Select the desired MIDI Controller Preset by entering the CONTROLLER PRESETS menu. Scroll
through the list of available controllers, and hit ENTER to enable the desired preset.
For example, to enable the Controller Preset for the mixer within Reason, go to MENU, select
MIDI CTRL PRESETS and hit ENTER.
Scroll through the list until the following dialogue appears:
1:Rzn Mixer C3
2:Rzn NN 19 C4
When “Rzn Mixer C3” is flashing, pressing ENTER will bring that preset into memory, and the
Digital 328 MIDI CONTROLLER BANK will be set to control Reason.
Please refer to the 328 Version 2.0 Manual for advice on accessing MIDI Controller Bank on the
328.
(Just press any fader mode button twice – even though it appears to de-select, it has entered MIDI Controller Bank)
Controller Maps
The following maps outline control locations for Reason when connected to the Digital 328. The
correct Controller Preset must be selected on the 328 as well.
